A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL and PRESIDENT of the BOARD OF TRUSTEESDanielle Heard, Head of SchoolJason Robart, President of the Board of Trustees

2

As we settle into another exciting school year, reflec-tion on the many accomplishments of a year complet-ed provides inspiration for the year ahead.

The 2013-2014 school year saw the launch of many new projects and initiatives. Our expanded transpor-tation program now offers access to nine communi-ties, enabling us to extend our reach in pursuit of an increasingly inclusive community. With the help of current and retired faculty as well as friends of the School, we have undertaken extensive curriculum work, including a full analysis and restructuring of the math curriculum. We developed and introduced new STEM program offerings, including robotics club and coding throughout all grade levels. The Class of 2014 returned from the inaugural Grade 8 service trip to the Dominican Republic last June lauding the experience as inspirational and transformative. Furthermore, under John McClellan’s leadership and expertise in strategy development, we launched our Strategic Di-rections, establishing a clear and bold vision for the future of the School. Our commitment to fostering a School culture of innovation, inclusivity, and impact in which all students are given the tools they need to thrive grows stronger every day.

This past year’s achievements would not have been possible without the outstanding efforts of our em-ployees, alumnae/i, parents, trustees, and friends. Last year, an incredible 97% of our employees contrib-uted to the Annual Fund, a record high achievement of the School. In addition, alumnae/i giving increased 28% in dollars and 41% in number of gifts and total parent giving was up 10% as well. We are continual-ly amazed by, and ever grateful for, this tremendous support from our entire community.

Your continued partnership and philanthropic support is what makes Nashoba Brooks stand out as not sim-ply a good school, but as a truly exceptional place for children to learn and grow. We have ambitious goals for the year ahead including enhanced curriculum re-view, broad and deep professional development, stra-tegic collaboration in all aspects of the School, and growing the Nashoba Brooks Fund to represent 10% of the annual budget. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we are well positioned to move forward towards achieving these objectives, implementing our Strategic Directions, and continuing to work in pursuit of our mission.

Thank you again for your support of our School.

Sincerely,

Nashoba Brooks is committed to its mission to educate children for a life of continuous learn-ing, accomplishment, and leadership. While the cost of this first-rate education is high, the School purposefully sets tuition below cost — 11% below to be precise — and makes significant resources available to those who can benefit from financial assistance. This past year, seeking to make it eas-ier for families to anticipate the multi-year cost of the Nashoba Brooks program, the Board of Trust-ees chose to cap the rate of growth of tuition at the rate of inflation plus a small margin. Additionally, tuition was leveled or “banded” across the lower, middle and upper grades at the school, allowing for greater predictability from year to year.

We have been able to make these changes in large part through the generosity of contributors to the Nashoba Brooks Fund. Thank you for your contin-ued support.

The following pages recognize those many gen-erous individuals, families, and organizations that stepped forward to support the school between July 2013 and June 2014.

In the list of donors, we have tried to acknowledge all of the trustess, parents, past parents, grandparents, alumnae/i, and friends who made cash gifts between July 2013 and June 2014. We apologize if we have inadvertently omitted any names, and hope you will inform us of any errors so that we can correct our records.

Every gift is important to Nashoba Brooks. Leadership giving, in particular, is a vital part of keeping the school strong. Each Leadership Society member has made a significant, inspir-ing investment in the mission of the School, and as a result, in the educational opportunities of our students. The Leadership Society donated 95% of the philanthropic support last year. Leadership donors are listed on the following pages based on cumulative cash gifts to all funds between July 2013 and June 2014.

LEADERSHIP SOCIETY

Nashoba Brooks School ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014

WHY I GIVEKimmy Schuster ‘13 has grown up with one rule when it comes to money: keep a third, spend a third, and donate a third. This year, when assessing the spoils of a year’s worth of babysitting, Kimmy knew exactly where she wanted to donate her third: Nashoba Brooks School.

“I was here for ten years,” she explained. “It was a big part of my life. Going into high school, I can see I had all these good values and morals from Nashoba. I wanted to do something to give back.”

Now a sophomore at Nobles and Greenough School, Kimmy describes her time at Nashoba Brooks as pivotal in her development. “Nashoba was so good at getting me started in lots of things and then I brought those ideas to Nobles. For instance, I was in YIP when I was here, and that taught me a lot about philanthropy and why it’s important to give. I think being at Nashoba made me nicer; I was taught to be respectful to everyone, which carried over.”

These days, Kimmy’s commitment to philanthropy is stronger than ever: this past summer, in addition to spending time with her family and exploring Alaska for three weeks with Overland, she put in 100 volunteer hours at Emerson Hospital. She continues to play soccer and has taken up crew, a sport she says is really tough but “balances her out” with its upper body focus. As a former Nashoba Varsity Basketball and Varsity Soccer Captain, it comes as no sur-prise that Kimmy is flourishing in the competitive environment of high school sports. Even so, she does look back longingly at her time as a Nashoba athlete. “Sports at Nashoba was so focused on teamwork. It didn’t matter if we won or lost; even if we lost games, I still felt like we won. I told my sister (Katie Schuster ‘17) that she should play soccer here, because it’s a different experience. You build real friendships between the grades.”

“Going into high school, I can see I had all these good values and morals from Nashoba. I wanted to do something to give back.”

We have received such tremendous benefits from this education. I re-member when Tucker was three and he chanted “reduce, reuse, recycle” when I threw something away. The School was teaching them to be good citizens at just three years old! We want to ensure that other students and families will benefit in the same way.” - Ruth Piper, Board of Visitors

Page 21: Annual Report 2013-2014

The goal of the NBS Parents’ Association (PA) is to support the School’s mission and help to create an inclusive parent community while organizing pro-grams and activities to enrich the student body. We pride ourselves on open communication and acces-sibility for all members of our NBS community which is reflected in this past years achievements.

A highlight of the past year was our True Colors Auc-tion which was a tremendous success thanks to our very generous community. In addition to augmenting the endowment, the auction funded all PA activities for the next two years. These funds have allowed us to add some great new opportunities to enrich our community.

Our new Parent Inclusivity Committee (PIC) works to provide meaningful parent programming that aligns with themes being explored in classrooms during the school year. PIC events will help us connect, learn, and grow, while fostering thoughtful conversations within our community.

Service Learning continues to be a priority for Nasho-ba Brooks so the PA has increased parent leadership in this area; enabling more service events and drives, and increased enthusiasm and involvement amongst students and their parents.

In following with our efforts to respond to community feedback, we made several positive changes to our annual Harvest Festival event this year. We moved it from November to October which allowed us to orga-nize several outdoor activities including fun games and rides as well as collaborative work in our com-munity garden with local farmers. Inside we added educational activities and continued to support our

efforts of sustainability. All of this resulted in in-creased attendance and a record-breaking fundrais-ing result from our annual “basket room” raffle.

As part of our effort to enrich the student body, the PA continues to support our library through various book events; enhance curricular themes with cul-tural art performances; encourage student perfor-mances during the annual talent show; and support our athletes with organized spirit events.

All parents and guardians are members of our Par-ents’ Association. We encourage any level of partici-pation. Join us at social events such as our new fall parent cocktail party and our annual winter weekend, or volunteer to publish students’ books and organize staff appreciation events. We rely upon and greatly value your continued commitment and support. Sincerely,

Holly Bernene 2013-2014 PA President

“We give to Nashoba Brooks because this is where we see our dollars making the most difference. Early education of our children is the most significant gift we can make and at a small institution like this, our dollars go a long way. Our investment goes directly into the operating budget, so the impact is tremendous and immediate.” -Kiki Shilling, Board of Trustees

The families of Grade 3 supported two proj-ects in 2013-2014. First was the creation of the Innovation Zone, a collaborative and innovative learning space located in the De-nault Library classroom. The next project that was funded by Grade 3 families was a recycling station that was installed in the Wallace Dining Commons. This donation was a great addition to the recycling theme that is undertaken by the Grade 3 students to support campus recycling and reduce campus waste products.

ENDOWED FUNDSThe following briefly describes Nashoba Brooks’ restricted funds. In addition to strengthening the school’s endowment, these funds provide scholarship support, library funding, and faculty enrichment.

Anne DeBoalt FundIn 1998 this fund was established by the Bankart family in honor of faculty member Anne DeBoalt. The fund supports Anne’s commitment to pro-fessional development and student services.

The Barbara Clifton FundThis fund honors Barbara Clifton, longtime Brooks and Nashoba Brooks teacher, who died in 1981. The fund supports financial assis-tance.

Benjamin J. Mendes III Memorial Scholarship FundThis fund was established in Benja-min’s memory. Donations to this fund go to an endowed scholarship fund and are used for financial assistance.

Connie Mendes Extended Day FundThis fund was established to honor Connie Mendes on her retirement as creator and Head of Extended Day. Donations to this fund are used exclusively to benefit the Extended Day Program.

Dorothy and Eliot Denault Library FundThis fund was established in 1999 by Dorothy and Eliot Denault to expand the collection of printed and elec-tronic media, purchase library equip-ment and furniture, and maintain the overall appearance of the library.

Eighth Grade Legacy FundThe Eighth Grade graduating class is asked each year to contribute a gift that goes to an endowed fund. The class decides on the use of the funds raised each year.

E. Kay Cowan Faculty FundThis permanently restricted and endowed fund has two goals. The first is to aid in compensating our faculty at a level that competes with our strongest peer schools, thus attracting promising new applicants and retaining the outstanding teach-ers who are already the heart of the school. The second goal is to ensure that Nashoba Brooks teachers will continue to develop new practic-

es based on recent research and innovative professional development offerings. Given these incentives, teachers will continue to create and deliver a program of excellence that is ever-evolving; they will narrow the distance toward mastery as they em-brace life-long learning for their own professional growth and as models for their students.

The Elizabeth Fowler Cowan Arts Enrichment FundThis fund was established in 2006 in memory of Head of School Kay Cowan’s mother. The fund is used to supplement the visual arts depart-ment’s operating budget.

Ellis Lecture and Scholarship FundThis fund was established in 1988 to honor Patricia A. Ellis (Director, 1972-1992). Donations to this fund go to an endowed scholarship fund and are used for financial assistance.

Employee Financial Crisis FundThis fund, established in 1998, is used for emergency loans to em-ployees.

The Faculty Development FundA Nashoba Brooks family in recog-nition of the dedication, talent and skills of the Nashoba Brooks faculty established the fund in 2006. The fund provides professional confer-ences and tuition reimbursement for current faculty. Ongoing donations to this fund are welcome, and gifts are often made in honor of a favorite past or present faculty member. Eighth Grade Legacy Gifts also continue to build this fund. A plaque recognizing donors is in the school lobby.

Fidelman Library FundThis fund was established by the Fidelman family in 1997 to support annual acquisitions of library media and books for the lower grades.

The Gladys Brooks FundThe Trustees of the Brooks School created this fund upon the retire-ment of Gladys Brooks, the founder and first headmistress of the Brooks School. Each year a student receiving

financial assistance is chosen as a Gladys Brooks Scholar.

The Huyen Truong Memorial Fund for Financial AssistanceThis fund was established in honor of Huyen Truong, former Director of Admission, who died in 2008. Money from this endowed scholarship fund will go to support Huyen’s com-mitment to diversity and financial assistance.

The Jean Travers Book FundThis fund was established in 2004 in honor of Jean Travers, Headmistress, Brooks School of Concord (1966-1980). Money from this endowed fund is used for lower grades book acquisitions for the library.

Johnson Greenhouse FundThe money from this fund is used to maintain the science greenhouse.

Katherine Bair B`80 Memorial Scholarship FundThis fund was established in Kather-ine’s memory. Donations to this fund go to an endowed scholarship fund and are used for financial assistance.

Margaret (Meg) Jones `89 Memorial Scholarship FundThis fund was established in Meg’s memory. Donations to this fund go to an endowed scholarship fund and are used for financial assistance.

The Mikal R. Cohen Memorial Scholarship FundThis fund was established in mem-ory of Mikal R. Cohen, mother of Rebecca `03, who believed deeply the breadth and richness of human diversity. She shared the School’s goal of increasing diversity within the composition of the student body.
