ETH ZÜRICH FOUNDATION | JAHRESBERICHT 2012ETH ZÜRICH FOUNDATION | JAHRESBERICHT 2012

Dear Donors and Partners

What is it that we have in common? A belief in the future. A conviction that the pursuit of

innovative research and the nurturing of talents are vital in addressing the global challenges

arising in areas such as health, nutrition, manufacturing or the environment. A commitment

to invest wholeheartedly in Switzerland as a centre of knowledge, expertise and industry.

And the certainty that every donation contributes to the growing innovative capacity and

pioneering spirit of ETH Zurich.

By supporting the ETH Zurich Foundation, you make it possible for extraordinary research and

education projects to be carried out at ETH Zurich. You encourage outstanding performance and

promote the development of new research fields, which would scarcely be possible without

your support. The talented researchers who benefit from your donations enjoy the freedom

they require to pursue promising ideas and discoveries with the potential to change all our lives.

In 2013, some 1‘800 private donors, foundations and companies expressed their commitment

with personal contributions totalling CHF 91 million. These funds are earmarked for the

development and strengthening of ETH priority areas. At the same time, research freedom

for the professors concerned is guaranteed by our guidelines for contractual agreements.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to all our donors and partners for your confidence and

dedication. We are also grateful to the executive board, professors and staff of ETH Zurich

for their collaboration. And, lastly, we thank the members of the Board of Trustees and the

staff of the Foundation.

We look forward to continuing our joint efforts to shape the future by supporting exceptional

individuals and projects at ETH Zurich.

Dr. Donald TillmanManaging Director

Jürgen DormannChairman of the Board of Trustees

by the ETH Zurich Foundation and its

partners, it would scarcely have been

possible to realize this dream. To take

another example, contributions to the

Pioneer Fellowship programme have

given young entrepreneurs the op-

portunity to bring their discoveries

and inventions to the market, which

will also benefit society at large. One

further example: the establishment

of new professorships in thematic

priority areas such as medtech or

building systems will strengthen re-

search and teaching for years to come.

For generously supporting these and

many other initiatives, our donors

deserve our heartfelt thanks. We

have been able to make significant

advances in many fields, to generate

new knowledge and to strengthen

Switzerland’s position as a centre

of research and industry. In these

achievements, you, the ETH Zurich

Foundation and our various funding

partners continue to play a decisive role.

Prof. Dr. Ralph EichlerPresident of ETH Zurich,Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the ETH Zurich Foundation

Ladies and Gentlemen

ETH Zurich trains thousands of scien-

tists and engineers every year, carries

out innovative research in pursuit of

new discoveries and technologies,

and is actively committed to the

transfer of knowledge to society.

For these activities, we receive so-

lid financial support from the federal

budget. Private funding gives us the

flexibility to tackle important topics

promptly and to adopt unconventional

approaches. With your donations to

the ETH Zurich Foundation, you have

enabled ETH Zurich to undertake

projects of strategic significance.

A case in point is the establishment of

the Institute for Theoretical Studies.

IMPACT OF YOUR DONATION

ON BEHALF OF ITS BENEFACTORS, THE ETH ZURICH FOUNDATION HAS SO FAR ALLOCATED A TOTAL OF CHF 175 MILLION TO ETH ZURICH, INCLUDING CHF 25 MILLION IN 2013. THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO ABOUT 2% OF THE ENTIRE ETH BUDGET. THESE RESOURCES ARE USED TO FUND THE INITIAL STAGES OF ETH PRIORITY PROJECTS.

Centre for theoretical basic researchDonations made it possible to esta-

blish a new Institute for Theoretical

Studies, which will invite top re-

searchers and young academics in

the fields of mathematics, theore-

tical natural sciences and compu-

ter science to ETH Zurich for year-

long sabbatical placements.

Award for young researcherProfessor Olivier Voinnet received

the prestigious Rössler Prize,

worth CHF 200‘000, for his disco-

veries in the field of molecular and

cell biology.

Cutting-edge technologyThe Laboratory of Physical Che-

mistry was able to acquire a one-of-

a-kind nuclear magnetic resonance

(NMR) spectrometer to investigate

interactions between proteins and

other fundamental structures in bio-

logy. With this new tool, resear-

chers hope to gain a deeper under-

standing of the origins of diseases

such as Alzheimer’s.

New approaches in teaching In a pilot study, massive open online

courses (MOOCs) were analysed

as an expansion of ETH Zurich‘s

teaching activities.

HIGHLIGHTS “THIS AWARD SHOWS THAT MY TEAM’S HARD

WORK IS APPRECIATED. THE PRIZE ALLOWS US TO

PURSUE NEW AUDACIOUS IDEAS IN TOTAL

RESEARCH FREEDOM. IN THE NEAR FUTURE,

WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE

BREAKTHROUGHS IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF

HOW VIRUSES ARE RESTRICTED BY RNA

INTERFERENCE IN MAMMALIAN CELLS.”

“I AM GLAD TO SUPPORT THE ETH ZURICH

FOUNDATION BECAUSE I SHARE ITS GOALS TO

PROMOTE INNOVATION IN SCIENCE AND

TECHNOLOGY. INNOVATION, PAIRED WITH

RESPONSIBILITY ARE INDISPENSABLE IF THE

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT IS TO PROCEED FOR

THE BENEFIT OF SOCIETY.”

Prof. Dr. Richard Ernst ETH Zurich Professor emeritus,Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 1991

Prof. Dr. Olivier VoinnetProfessor of RNA Biology, received theRössler Prize 2013

Support provided by private donors,

foundations and companies allows

ETH Zurich to implement teaching

and research initiatives rapidly and

effectively in strategic areas. In this

process, the ETH Zurich Foundation

serves as a hub for donors’ and

partners’ concerns and as a catalyst

for ETH Zurich‘s efforts. By acting

together, we can continue to streng-

then ETH Zurich’s position as

a global leader and to enhance

Switzerland’s attractiveness as an

economic centre.

The ETH Zurich Foundation and its

partners focus exclusively on ETH

Zurich’s strategic priorities, sup-

porting projects of the highest quality

which require start-up funding to

get off the ground.

Technologies of the future: ETH researchers cannot yet “beam“ human beings through space, science-fiction-style, as shown in this photomontage. But last year, at Professor Andreas Wallraff‘s laboratory, information was - for the first time - successfully teleported in an elec-tronic circuit. Professor Wallraff (left, at the back) is a Rössler Prize winner, whose research is supported by the ETH Zurich Foundation and the National Centre of Competence in Research for Quantum Science and Technology, led by Professor Klaus Ensslin (far right). BECAUSE IT BELIEVES IN THE

ENORMOUS POTENTIAL OF THIS

ENERGY SOURCE. WITH THIS

Peter von Siemens Chairman of the Foundation Board of the Werner Siemens-Stiftung, which supports the Geothermal Energy initiative.

In recent years, ETH Zurich has

built up substantial expertise

in the field of energy. As a result

of the Electrical Energy initiative,

more than 10 new professor-

ships have been established

and leading researchers have

been appointed from all over the

world. Thanks to support from

industry, Professors Prasser,

Müller and Biela are now

teaching and carrying out re-

search at ETH Zurich.

“IT’S IMPORTANT THAT, AS PART OF A NATIONAL EFFORT, WE

EXPAND RESEARCH ON ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES AND SUPPLY

SECURITY, SO THAT IN 10 YEARS’ TIME WE’LL HAVE ANSWERS TO

THE QUESTIONS ARISING TODAY. IF NUCLEAR POWER IS TO BE

SUCCESSFULLY PHASED OUT BY 2050, WE’LL NEED 10% MORE

HYDROELECTRIC POWER AND 5–10% FROM DEEP GEOTHERMAL

ENERGY. WE’RE REALIZING OUR VISION WITH STRONG INDUSTRIAL

PARTNERS – FROM SWITZERLAND AND AROUND THE WORLD.”

Prof. Dr. Domenico GiardiniProfessor of Geophysics, is the Head of the Swiss Competence Centre for Energy Research (SCCER) on Electricity Supply

Geothermal energy pioneersAs part of the Geothermal Energy initiative, an extensive research and teaching pro-gramme is being developed at ETH Zurich. The ETH Zurich Foundation received donations to fund the establishment of two new professorships.

New Competence CentreThe SCCER on Electricity Supply has been established at ETH Zurich. It focusses on questions such as the security of power supplies from alter-native sources of energy.

Bold research projectsThe ETH Energy Science Center’s initial call for propo-sals produced an impressive response: around 30 high-quality submissions were re-ceived for seed projects. Roughly a third of these explo-ratory research projects are to be funded by contributions from partner companies.

Networking of industrial partnersAt the fifth Partnership Coun-cil Energy assembly hosted by ETH Zurich, academics and representatives of industrial partners discussed the latest research findings and techno-logies in the field of carbon capture and storage.

Manufacturing across Scales – from Nano to Macro This new initiative combines the expertise of several

departments at ETH Zurich and an existing Competence

Centre, bringing together industrial partners and resear-

chers. Research areas include the integration of functional

materials such as nanoparticles, thin films and nanostruc-

tured coatings on large surfaces, the optimized use of

sensors and converters, and the modelling of manufactu-

ring tools and processes. Apart from the establishment of

new professorships, support is to be provided for major

research programmes (industry cooperation projects) and

for short term exploratory research (seed projects) and

associated PhD projects. The ETH Zurich Foundation

invites funding partners to work together with ETH Zurich

to achieve these new goals.

Quantum EngineeringThe aim of this initiative is to explore the utilization of quantum

effects for technical applications. Quantum mechanical

phenomena have the potential to revolutionize information

and communication technology. Fourteen research groups

from four ETH Departments (Physics, Chemistry, Informa-

tion Technology and Electrical Engineering, and Mechani-

cal Engineering) are already engaged in the development

of a quantum computer. As well as advances in quantum

information processing, ETH Zurich also hopes to see new

developments in quantum sensing and imaging. In addition,

quantum simulations are to be used to investigate proper-

ties of complex chemical and biological systems (e.g. for

materials development applications). Under the initiative,

a new professorship is to be established, and there are also

plans to set up a quantum engineering centre, which

would bring together experts from various disciplines and

train young engineers for the future.

ETH Zurich has launched two highly ambitious new initia-

tives, which are designed, firstly, to support the develop-

ment of innovative production processes and materials

and, secondly, to establish a world-leading quantum

engineering centre. These initiatives involve not only trans-

fers of technology and knowledge between industry,

start-ups and ETH researchers but also the fostering of

talented young scientists.
