In collaboration with our agricultural community, we brought NC farmers, NC researchers and technical advisors together along with sustainable agriculture advocates to begin answering questions about how we can modify our production practices in response to climate change. We were asked by the community to help ?ind local solutions to the problems arising in our changing climate today. We called it Farming Strategies in Today’s Changing Climate and partnered with Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro. (It sold out!) Our keynotes
were Laura Lengnick who had just participated in a USDA climate change paper as well as our State Climatologist, Ryan Boyles who explained in detail the weather and climate trends and forecasts for North Carolina. Break out sessions occurred with farming experts and researchers and a big part of the day was having the 140 people listen and talk to each other. The day ended with a celebratory party at the Eco-‐Industrial Plant. The overwhelming message of the day was: HOPE. These topics of extreme weather patterns and uncontrollable diseases, pests and environmental degradation can seem overwhelming. We found that the group wanted a lot more. A white paper was written from the day and a climate change vulnerability study was conducted in Chatham County with 7 local farmers and NCSU. The 2014 Adaptation Conference is being held on February 7th @ CCCC with Albert Bates from infamous Tennessee eco-‐institute,
The Farm. We were the ?irst to hold this type of grassroots climate adaptation conference and we are grateful for the collaboration with the local organizations and experts that helped put it on. We see the need for an annual gathering to solve our local problems.

The ‘choir’ understands what we do and why we do it. It is time now to reach the next circle of the public in very intentional ways through new corporate partnerships and a focus on improving the strength and quality of our unique brand. !We constantly tweak the workshop series to be not only educational, but a real and meaningful experience. With our expertise and new ideas and subjects, we are creating a beautiful program that thousands of consumers have now taken part of. 2014 will include more interesting topics taught by fascinating Instructors. !Some examples of past 2013 Workshops: Backyard Poultry Intensive, Intro To Aquaponics, Wild Fermentation, Seed Saving and Advanced Plant Breeding, Wild Edibles, Wonder Walk: Making Pesto with “Weeds”, Whole Foods Approach to Weight Loss, Fungi 101 & Mushroom Log Cultivation, The Transformative Life, Valentines’ Day Wine and Cheese Soiree, Beginning Cheese Making & Manifestation. The Abundance Foundation helped found the United States’ first-‐ever wild food and medicinal herb market in Carrboro, North Carolina in spring 2013. The Wild Food + Herb Market (WF+HM) took place one Sunday afternoon each month on the Carrboro Commons from March through November 2013.
A variety of
vendors provided
unusual wild foods and
unique herbal offerings
at each Market,
everything from herbal
desserts, to dried
mushrooms, to freshly
foraged fruits, nuts,
and vegetables.
The WF+HM also
offered resources to learn
more about wild plants of the Piedmont
and their uses, how to identify and harvest
wild foods and herbs sustainably, and have
the opportunity to ask experts to identify
edible and medicinal
plants and mushrooms. ! !
The NC Botanical
Garden featured
educational booths
offering information on
botanical illustration
and invasive species, as
well as endangered
plant lists.
Attendees came from
across the southeast to
see the WF+HM
because of local,
national, and
international press
attention from
Singapore, Qatar,
Chicago, Reuters,
Yahoo!, INDY Week,
and more. The Wild Food
+ Herb Market was also fortunate to be
featured on the public access television
channel, UNCTV, which substantially
increased the Market's exposure.
As a place to buy, sell, trade and
gather with others interested in wild
foods and herbs, over time the WF+HM
created a market for wild food and
medicinal herbs in the area and grow
small businesses serving these needs. The Wild Food + Herb Market also helped serve as a catalyst for creating a vibrant community of wild food stewards and herbal medicine in central North Carolina.

The second part of our Chef Challenge including working with “Cafeteria Man” Tony Geraci. We went to Memphis, Tennessee to see how he has turned around their nutri?on department that serves 130,000 kids and cooking from scratch in a central kitchen. They have quite the opera?on that has local farmers stopping in all day to deliver fresh produce as well as shipping in massive amounts from other places. Tony has a very outside the box, entrepreneurial method of bringing in the kids to cook, teaching them to run gardens, and he’s increased school lunch sales because the food tastes good! We brought Tony to PiJsboro to meet with our school board and held a Public Forum at CCCC that was standing room only. Tony and the panel of local nutri?onist, farm and department of agriculture folks took all ques?ons from a very passionate group of lunch staff and local food ac?vists.
During our 2013 Chatham Chef Challenge, our farm-‐to-‐school initiative in Chatham County, local chefs, cafeteria staff teamed together to serve 17,400 healthy, delicious and creative school lunches in all 17 Chatham County Public Schools. We
worked with award winning Chefs to teach
new recipes, knife skills, and techniques in the kitchen to our nutrition staff that
serves 9000 kids.

It’s a little crazy that we have been working on local food, renewable energy and community for 8 years now. Time flies.
We had several firsts in the nation. Yes, little Abundance was first off the line to hold a Wild Food & Herb Market and also first to hold a Climate Change Adaptation Conference.
We excel at pioneering and being the small but powerful grassroots engine that gets others motivated and inspired.
As they say, it takes a small group of committed citizens and we have that here in central North Carolina like no other place in the country. Our success this year was due to the many collaborations and relationships built over the past years. We worked with other non-profits, businesses, local government, the community college and with many different volunteers. We met our goals of bringing people together to learn and to implement.
We brought more people on staff to help. Beth Tacular is the brilliant artist and branding brain behind the new fliers for our DIY Workshop Series and events. She thinks deeply about who we need to reach and how to keep having fun while doing it. Look for a new, easier-to-read website in 2014 under her management. Laurel Shulman came in and helped organize
and cheer us on. She is a skilled cheese maker and permaculturist as well. Charlotte Vetter is a retired CPA and we are fortunate to have her overseeing our books, 990 and fiscal sponsorship management.!
Jenny Schnaak continues to amaze with her high energy, positive attitude and fresh ideas. We see big things coming
in the year ahead!
A lot of Community Resilience From our Children’s Sustainability
Education to our Annual Amazing Pepper Festival to our quirky DIY Workshop Series, Abundance reaches thousands of people with a very positive message about taking care of ourselves, our planet and creating a beautiful community spirit of resilience. And it shows. This place is amazing and getting better every day. You all are our cheerleaders, our supporters and our workhorses. We thank you for letting us do this important work. Please jump in for 2014’s year of adventure!!
With gratitude and abundance,!Tami SchwerinExecutive Director
2013 A year of no fear On behalf of the Board and Staff...
It’s really fun to look at the numbers every year and see where we came from. An inspired idea and lots of passion. Beginning in 2006 our revenue was $22,700. Our biggest year was 2012 at $349,374 and that
included a big capital campaign to build Pickards Mountain Eco-Institute Community Kitchen which has been performing wonderfully with events and workshops on their beautiful farm. 2013 was a year of growth with each
program being a bit bigger than the year before. That is the way we like it…good steady growth each year. Our 990’s and past annual reports are located on our website under About Us. Please visit and call if you have questions! Thanks for reading!
