Produced by the Development Office Scotch College MelbourneGreat effort has been made to ensure an accurate and thorough Annual Report 2015. We apologise if any omissions or errors have occurred. If you discover an omission or error, please notify the Development Office, and we will ensure that omission or error is rectified in the 2016 Annual Report.

Because we believe that multiple affiliations are an indication of the deep trust and strong conviction in this institution, we have chosen to list more than once those donors to the Annual Giving Program who have multiple connections to the school. Thus, an Old Boy donor could be listed as a contributor to the school in his class year and also be listed as a current parent donor. If we are unaware of an affiliation you have with the school, please let us know so that we can maintain complete and up-to-date records.

President’s ReportMichael Robinson AO ‘55

MR MICHAEL ROBINSON AO PRESIDENT OF THE SCOTCH COLLEGE FOUNDATION

The successful completion of the $20M Capital Campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science made 2015 the most outstanding year in the Foundation’s history. The Centre for Science is nearing completion, and will be a stunning addition to our magnificent campus. The Lionel Spencer bequest to the Building Fund, mentioned on pages 14-15 of this report, is in addition to the $20M raised in the Capital Campaign.

The acquisition of the Hawthorn site 100 years ago and its subsequent physical development has been achieved almost entirely because of the wonderful generosity and financial support of Old Boys, current and past parents, staff and other members of the Scotch community.

The success of the Capital Campaign, with more than 1100 donors, has demonstrated clearly that the level of Old Boy support over the last century has not only been maintained, but has expanded substantially. The names of those who supported the Capital Campaign at Foundation membership level will be listed on the donor board, to be placed prominently at the entrance to the Centre for Science.

I record my appreciation of our Executive Director, Tim Shearer, who has been the powerhouse behind this recent and longer-term success. His energy, initiative and stewardship gave everybody in the Scotch Family the opportunity to be part of this extraordinary achievement.

The assets of the Foundation (which are entirely separate from the school’s Building Fund referred to above) increased during the year from $40.8M to $45.6M, largely as a result of the Glenis Payne bequest (see page 18 of this report). The Foundation’s investment income from these assets increased from $2.4M to more than $2.9M.

New scholarship awards funded by the Foundation have increased from 5.5 (FTE) awarded in 2015 for commencement in 2016 to 7.5 (FTE) for 2017. As a consequence, 24 boys commencing at Scotch in 2017 will receive scholarship funding from the Foundation.

The Foundation annual general meeting and President’s Dinner, held at the Australian Club on Thursday 21 May 2015, was a memorable occasion, affording the opportunity to thank retiring board members Paul Meadows (’73), Phil Wright (’69) and Michelle Ehrlich.

Paul served on the Foundation Board for 15 years, the past nine as one of the Vice Presidents. Phil served on the board for a remarkable 20 years. Fortunately we will still see Phil, as he continues to support the school’s rowing program as coach of one of the under-age crews. Michelle joined the board in 2010 and was an enthusiastic participant in board deliberations.

We were delighted to welcome three new faces to the board at the AGM. John Simpson (’75), who completed his term on the School Council in November, joined the board, as did Richard Balderstone (’76), who needs no real introduction. The younger son of Sir James Balderstone (‘39), Richard is head of client and investment services at Jardine Fleming Capital Partners, a Melbourne-based specialised funds management organisation.

Sam Hunt (’92), a director at Warr Hunt, also joined the board. Sam has a particular passion for the wellbeing of indigenous Australians, and will be instrumental in ensuring that the Foundation best supports the school’s Indigenous Program.

" I can’t wait to make a vaccine for cancer."

Edison Wang (Year 4)

We were delighted to welcome current parent, Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO, as our guest of honour at the President’s Dinner. Professor Scheffer is a physician-scientist whose work as a paediatric neurologist and epileptologist at the University of Melbourne and the Florey Institute has led the field of epilepsy genetics over more than 20 years, in collaboration with Professor Samuel Berkovic and molecular geneticists. This resulted in identification of the first epilepsy gene and many more genes subsequently.

At the August board meeting, Doug Lording (’64) assumed the position of joint Vice President with David Yu. Doug is the President of the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association, and will ensure that the two organisations continue to work harmoniously and collaboratively for the benefit of the school. David Yu has served on the Foundation Board since 1997 and provides wise counsel on all matters, but particularly in the area of financial governance.

We also welcomed Michelle Zheng to the board. Michelle and her husband Harry recently joined the Foundation as Trustees through their support of the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science. The Wang and Zheng General Science Laboratory will serve generations of Scotch boys well for decades.

Finally, I wish to acknowledge the support and encouragement given to the Foundation and its fundraising efforts by the School Council Chairman, the Hon Dr David Kemp, the Principal, Tom Batty and all at OSCA. Much of the credit for what has been achieved is due to them all.

Executive Director’s ReportTim Shearer ‘85

MR TIM SHEARER ('85) DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

IntroductionThe Foundation’s energies in 2015 were focused almost entirely on completing the $20M Capital Campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science. That the target was met in December is a wonderful tribute to the Scotch Family. The response to the Capital Campaign has been enormous. More than 1100 members of the community supported the campaign – an overwhelming endorsement of the importance of a science-based education, but also of the school, its leadership and its direction – and the breadth and depth of this support has been inspiring.

Six generous benefactors provided a quarter of the $20M total, and we sincerely thank them for their transformational support. This meant that the outstanding $15M was committed by well over 1000 members of the community. I believe this is one of the real highlights of the campaign, and in many respects it flies in the face of conventional fundraising wisdom, where the majority of projects are essentially being funded by a few individuals. This strong support base augurs well for future fundraising endeavours, and I take this opportunity to thank everyone who elected to support this important school initiative.

The Foundation again hosted an array of events in 2015.

On Wednesday 25 March the school held an information session about the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science for Scotch Family members who are health professionals. Professor Andrew Kaye AO (’67) delivered the keynote address, in which he discussed the evolution of neurosurgery research and treatment. Andrew was a patron of the Capital Campaign for the Centre for Science, and congratulated his old school for its ambitious commitment to the sciences.

‘Why should Scotch do this?’ he asked. He said: ‘Of course, Scotch must do what is best for Scotch, but in doing so it benefits the whole community. Scotch sets the standard and leads the way, and it’s not just for the scientists, the doctors, the mathematicians, but it sets the example and creates the awareness in the hope that other schools will follow.

‘And, if we don’t do it, who will? And if not now, when?’

The Foundation AGM and President’s Dinner, was held at the Australian Club on Thursday 21 May. We were delighted to welcome current parent Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO as our guest of honour at the President’s Dinner. Professor Scheffer is a physician-scientist who works as a paediatric neurologist and epileptologist at the University of Melbourne and the Florey Institute.

On the initiative of Scotch’s Director of Music, John Ferguson, the Foundation held a fundraising concert on Saturday 23 May which featured the wonderful talents of cellist Yelian He (’02) and pianist Yasmin Rowe. Funds raised were directed to the Capital Campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science.

On 13 August, 20 Old Boys attended a Foundation luncheon in Sydney in the Ord Minnett boardroom. The attendees heard news from School Principal Tom Batty and Foundation President and Capital Campaign Chairman Michael Robinson AO (’55) about their old school, including a progress report on the Centre for Science project. Astonishingly, more than half a million dollars was committed to the Centre for Science from Old Boys in Sydney through this luncheon. Sincere thanks are extended to Anthony Teasdale (’94) who helped to coordinate this event, and to all the Old Boys who attended the luncheon.

The Forbes Society luncheon was held on Monday 7 September in the Longmore Room. Michael Robinson, School Council Chairman David Kemp and Tom Batty hosted guests Roger Gillespie OAM (’69), Lesley Gillespie OAM, Charles Goode AC (’56), Rick Harbig (’61), John Hilton-Wood (’41) and Wendy Hilton-Wood, Barbara Holder, Christian Johnston (’90) and Jinah Johnston, and Norma Lithgow.

On Thursday 6 October – the school’s 164th birthday – donors who had committed to the Centre for Science project at Foundation membership levels attended a cocktail party at Scotch, which included tours of the construction site. Kane Construction project manager, Sam Birdseye (’03) addressed guests, as did Tom Batty and Michael Robinson.

The East Melbourne Glen (EMG) Chapter program of events was again well supported in 2015. The Easter Chapel Service in the Littlejohn Memorial Chapel, held on Tuesday 24 March, was well attended.

The Winter Luncheon was held on Wednesday 10 June in the Cardinal Pavilion’s Boykett Room. More than 130 guests enjoyed hearing Colin Campbell’s (’62) reflections on school life, and about his lifelong commitment to the wine industry through his involvement with Campbell’s of Rutherglen. In 2014 Colin was awarded the inaugural Victorian Legend of the Vine Award as a fourth generation winemaker, and it was an honour to welcome him back to his old school.

The EMG Christmas Luncheon was held on Friday 11 December in the Boarders’ Dining Room. More than 240 Old Boys enjoyed a festive luncheon. The Foundation was again delighted to sponsor the school’s third annual Science Oration. World-renowned cancer scientist and winner of the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science, Professor Ian Frazer, delivered the Oration in the Geoffrey McComas Theatre.

Pillar 1The Scotch College Building Fund

With the Capital Campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science in full swing it was no surprise that the school’s Building Fund was well supported in 2015. The Building Fund was also the beneficiary of the single largest gift received in the school’s history, through the estate of Lionel Spencer (’15). More can be read about Lionel and his transformational generosity later in this Annual Report.

Pillar 2The Scotch College Foundation Scholarship Fund

Over $5M was committed to the Scotch College Foundation Scholarship Fund in 2015. In the centenary year of Gallipoli, Tony ‘Fizz’ Palmer (’54) has created the Lt. Col. Alec White Gallipoli Scholarship. The perpetual scholarship is named after Alec White, a distinguished lieutenant colonel who was the commanding officer of the 8th Light Horse Regiment. He was killed in action at Gallipoli.

The scholarship is open to any applicant, and will be awarded to a student who displays academic ability and exceptional ability and interest in salt water pursuits, including but not limited to sailing and surfing. It is expected that the recipient will participate fully in the school’s aquatic program.

Glenis Payne, the daughter of eminent Old Boy Sir Douglas Little (’22), through her estate has endowed a substantial perpetual scholarship fund as detailed on page 15. Glenis has determined to honour her father by naming the scholarships in his honour. Many boys will now benefit from a Scotch education thanks to the foresight and generosity of Glenis Payne

Pillar 3The Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Fund

The Indigenous Scholarship Fund provides opportunities for indigenous Australians to benefit from all that a Scotch education affords. In 2015 nine indigenous boys attended Scotch through the generosity of the Australian Indigenous Education Fund, and the generosity of a number of members of the Scotch Family.

After accounting for government funding and the annual contribution from the Australian Indigenous Education Fund, there is an annual funding gap of approximately $250,000. Donors can elect to support individual boys and their journey through Scotch, or support the program generally. Only $97,086 was raised in 2015, meaning we had a funding shortfall.

The Indigenous Scholarship Fund will be a real focus for the Foundation and the Development Office in 2016, as we attempt to create an endowed fund to underwrite the program in perpetuity. An amount of $6M is required to achieve this ambition.

Pillar 4The Scotch College Foundation Future (Endowment) Fund

Donors committed $12,000 to the Foundation’s Future (or Endowment) Fund in 2015. At the end of 2015 this fund was valued at $9.7M ($9.7M in December 2014). The Endowment Fund exists to provide a reliable income stream for the school, and in 2015, $323,445 was provided from this fund to the school. A portion of these funds were used to finance the 2015 Foundation Fellow.

The Foundation Fellowship program was established in the late 1980s with the aim of providing funding for experienced, high profile practitioners to visit Scotch every few years. The Scotch College Foundation was delighted to sponsor two visits in 2015 from renowned educational psychologist and co-founder of the Relational Learning for Boys Framework, Dr Michael Reichert. Dr Reichert created and served as director of an urban youth development program, Peaceful Posse, sponsored by Philadelphia Physicians for Social Responsibility, and currently serves as executive director of the Centre for the

Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives, a research consortium of independent schools operating in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr Reichert has published and spoken at conferences, schools and to community groups on subjects related to boys’ and girls’ lives. He has consulted to, and conducted training for, many independent schools, and is currently on staff at the Haverford School outside of Philadelphia. The Relational Learning Framework has been developed using examples of best practice from a wide range of boys’ schools across the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, NZ and South Africa.

Dr Reichert visited Scotch from 23 to 27 February, and again from 24 to 28 August, with the aim of helping the

school to embed effective relational learning practices in all areas of school endeavour. Relational learning strategies are key to the ongoing development of effective learning conversations with boys, and improved academic care.

The primary purpose of Dr Reichert’s first visit was to work with groups of boys and teachers to better understand our school. To this end he ran focus groups for boys and staff, and participated in a wide range of observations across the school. During his second visit in August, Dr Reichert conducted additional focus groups and class observations, worked with members of our Junior School as part of an international action research project, delivered a plenary professional learning session to Senior School staff, and produced a report for the school in which he outlined recommendations for follow-up actions.

Dr Reichert’s Foundation Fellowship visit embodied many of the attributes of the highly successful teaching approaches described in his research: it was engaged, responsive, committed, and defined by a willingness to learn and grow among boys, teachers and the Foundation Fellow himself. Dr Reichert’s report has provided clear direction for the school, will strongly guide ongoing professional learning initiatives, and, in time, will have a profoundly positive impact on the Scotch learning environment.

Annual Giving

The 2015 Annual Giving program raised $126,694, down 21 per cent on 2014’s result. This decrease is best explained by the large number of five-year pledges secured during the Capital Campaign for the Centre for Science. The program, which commenced at Scotch in 1977, continues to provide a vehicle for everyone to contribute to the welfare of the school.

Life Support for Scotch

Twenty-five Old Boys are participating in this program, which raised $4,811 in 2015. This program was introduced in 2013 to encourage younger Old Boys to begin their philanthropic journey with their school. It involves Old Boys donating the amount corresponding to their years out from school in a dollar value, on a monthly direct debit basis.

Gifts and Major Gifts program

125 members of the Scotch Family joined the Scotch Foundation in 2015 by making a commitment at the $10,000 level or above. The majority of new members supported the Capital Campaign for the Centre for Science, and I sincerely thank each one of them for their wonderful support.

Bequest program

Through the continuing generosity of the Scotch Family, Scotch boys are able to take full advantage of second-to-none teaching and learning facilities, including the superb music and drama facilities of the James Forbes Academy. The buildings and facilities at Scotch are in large part the result of the efforts and generosity of parents and Old Boys of the school.

The same wholehearted support of the school community has enabled the Capital Campaign for the new Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science to come to fruition. The same philanthropic spirit has enabled many boys who otherwise would not have been able to attend Scotch to do so.

At the end of 2015 the Alexander Morrison Circle (AMC) had 148 living members. The AMC was established in 2003 to recognise the generosity of people who have indicated their intention to remember Scotch College in a bequest, as part of their charitable intention. Membership of the AMC is presented to anyone who indicates such a bequest, regardless of the level of financial commitment: During 2015 we welcomed 12 new members (19 in 2014) to the AMC. Sadly, 11 members of the AMC died in 2015 (14 in 2014).

A full listing of AMC members appears on page 37 of this Annual Report.

Lionel Spencer (1915)

Lionel Spencer died on 12 March 1988. He left a substantial estate, with a life interest to his widow, Yvonne Spencer. On her death the

estate was to be divided equally between the Scotch College Building Fund and five other charities. Yvonne Spencer died on 30 April 2015, and in December 2015 the Building Fund received the major part of its bequest – the largest single donation ever received by the school. It does not form a part of the $20M named for the Centre for Science.

Lionel Richard Vivian Spencer was born at Ascot Vale on 25 April, 1896, the son of Richard and Catherine Underwood (nee Nixon) Spencer. He was educated at Scotch from 1908 to 1915.

A fine sportsman, Lionel was a member of the Athletics teams of 1911 to 1913 and the 1915 team, with Scotch winning all but the 1911 competition. In 1915 he won the open 100 yards easily in 10.5 seconds by about three yards, and the open 220 yards in 23.8 seconds with a margin of about five yards. Lionel finished third in the open 440 yards, missing second place by a foot. These results made him arguably Scotch’s equal best performer in Scotch’s win.

Lionel was also a member of the 1st XVIII in his last three years, winning the 1913 premiership.

He was a member of Melbourne University Rifles and studied Architecture for one year before enlisting on 22 March 1917 in the AIF’s Australian Field Artillery Reinforcements.

Lionel was posted to 30th Battery, 3rd Division, in 1917 and served in France. On 13 September 1918 he was transferred to the Australian Flying Corps as a fighter pilot. He completed a flying course at Minchinhampton Aerodrome under Squadron Leader Lawrence Wackett

(later Sir Lawrence Wackett). In England at Scarborough on 6 August 1919 Lionel married Dorothy Cecilia Pattman. He was demobilised on 26 January 1920.

At conclusion of World War I Lionel was asked to join the Australian athletic team to compete in the Inter Allied Games in France. He had many successes in the sprinting events, including a race at Stamford Bridge, England in 1923, against Harold Abrahams, of Chariots of Fire Fame. Abrahams beat him by the narrowest of margins and the following year won an Olympic Games gold medal.

On returning to Australia Lionel’s father financed him in the automotive industry. He was the founder, managing director and chairman of Regent Motors Holdings Ltd. (later a public company). The company acted as agents for DKW (German), Alvis (British), Rover (British), Land Rover (British) and Volkswagen (German).

Lionel was instrumental in introducing the Volkswagen to Australia. Regent Motors Holdings was the distributor for Australia of Volkswagen in 1954, and later entered into partnership with the German company, building 20,000 cars a year.

He retired in 1960, selling a controlling interest to Lombard Banking Company Ltd. (London), which in turn sold to Clyde Industries Ltd of Sydney. The inducement in both cases was to take over the hire purchase business, which was considerable.

Lionel and his first wife Dorothy did not have children. After Dorothy’s death he married Yvonne Smyth, and in retirement he and Yvonne travelled widely and made significant donations to charities including Scotch College. After his retirement he was appointed Life Governor at four Melbourne hospitals.

Lionel Richard Vivian Spencer died at Camberwell on 12 March 1998.

Yvonne Lois Spencer

Yvonne Lois Spencer was born at East Malvern on 11 September 1924, the daughter of Gordon Fiddes and Ellen (nee Gilbert) Smyth. She was educated at Methodist Ladies’ College.

In 1940 Yvonne started work as a librarian. From 1950 she was personal assistant to the chairman of the Stock Exchange until her retirement on 30 June 1976.

Yvonne had an interest in investment markets and politics. She had a large circle of friends, and after her retirement she spent most of her time travelling and dining with them.

She was also a long term and popular member of Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club. During her lifetime she gave annual gifts to number of charities.

After the death of her husband in 1988, Yvonne carried on his support for Scotch and was a member of the Forbes Society in recognition of her generosity. She was a regular attendee at the Forbes Society Annual Luncheon.

Yvonne Lois Spencer died on 30 April 2015.

Glenis Payne

The wonderful tradition of giving is personified in Glenis Payne’s bequest in honour of her father, Sir Douglas

Macfarlan Little (‘22) (pictured), which the Scotch College Foundation has received.

Sir Douglas Little was born on 23 July 1904 and attended Scotch from 1918 to 1922. Douglas was a scholarship and Exhibition winner in 1921, and in 1922 he was a member of The Scotch Collegian Editorial Committee. He was awarded a scholarship to Ormond College at the University of Melbourne, where he studied law and received his Master of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees. He was awarded a final university scholarship in 1926.

Sir Douglas was admitted to the Bar in 1930. During World War II he served in the RAAF as a wing commander, returning to the law after the war as a barrister and Queen’s Counsel, taking silk in 1954 and becoming a Supreme Court judge in 1959. He was knighted in 1973 and retired from the Bench in 1974.

He died on 30 November 1990, one of the school’s most distinguished Old Boys, and a great Victorian. In an obituary published in Great Scot in 1991, Sir Ninian Stephen (‘40) said: ‘Victoria knew Douglas Macfarlan Little as a distinguished lawyer, his brilliant career at the Bar being followed by many years of great service to the community on the Bench of the Supreme Court of this state ... Doug Little was, both at the Bar and on the Bench, a man fulfilled, his working life devoted to his beloved profession of the law and his days filled with quiet satisfaction in the doing of what he did so well.’

Douglas bequeathed a sum to the school to establish the ‘The Douglas M Little Scholarship’, which provided $10,000 per year towards the tuition costs of a student

from rural Victoria entering Scotch in the Senior School, on the understanding that the boy would be unable to attend Scotch without this assistance, and that the boy would benefit from a Scotch education.

Over the years Douglas’ daughter, Glenis Payne, continued to give to the scholarship fund, ultimately enabling the boarding fees of a boy from country Victoria to be funded. Glenis, who died on 13 February 2014, bequeathed half the residue of her father’s estate to Scotch to continue the scholarship in perpetuity. The fund is now of sufficient size to enable at least one full scholarship to be awarded each year. This means there will be not fewer than six boys at Scotch on this scholarship at any one time.

Carl James Bendix (’64)

Carl attended Scotch from 1956 to 1964, and was the brother, son and nephew of Old Boys. He was a boarder in McMeckan House (1956) and later in Arthur Robinson House (1961). Carl was a quality controller. The last surviving member of the Bendix family at Scotch, he showed his appreciation for his Scotch education by becoming a member of the Alexander Morrison Circle.

Carl died on 5 April 2007. His bequest will support the Scotch College Building Fund, and his generosity will be acknowledged through the naming of a laboratory in the new Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science.

Alan Howard Boxer (’45)

Alan attended Scotch from 1940 to 1945. He was a 1945 Prefect and co-Dux of Scotch. Alan graduated with

first class honours in arts from Melbourne University, and was awarded the Wyselaskie Scholarship in political economy. He completed a B Phil at Christ Church, Oxford, returning to Melbourne University in 1952 to lecture in economics.Alan became a senior lecturer (1959), reader (1967) and sub-dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. He was chair of the Board of Studies in Public Administration, chief examiner in matriculation economics, and chair of the Victorian Universities and Schools Examination Board. He was successively review editor, associate editor and joint editor of The Economic Record for 15 years.

Alan was elected Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in 1974. He joined the Commonwealth Treasury in 1975, holding senior positions until retiring in 1986. In 1980 Alan was seconded to the Australian Financial System Inquiry.

Alan showed his gratitude to Scotch by becoming a member of the Alexander Morrison Circle. He died on 28 June 2014. His bequest to the Scotch College Building Fund will support the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science.

Lindsay Alexander Tallent (’44)

Lindsay attended Scotch from 1938 to 1943 and was a son, father and grandfather of Scotch boys. He was a member

of the 1939 Junior School football and cricket teams. Lindsay served in the RAN from 1945 to 1946 and was an able seaman. He worked in the family drapery business.

Lindsay supported Scotch as a member of the OSCA Council and as a member of the Alexander Morrison Circle. His bequest will be directed to a fund to support the construction of a proposed new pavilion for the Main Oval. Lindsay died on 10 December 2012.

The Tallents are a well-regarded Scotch Family. Lindsay and Joan’s sons, Simon (‘72) and Roger (‘74), attended Scotch. Simon Tallent had a stellar career playing football at Old Scotch and his son Charlie (‘07) followed in his father’s footsteps.

SummaryThe successful completion of the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science is a great credit to the Scotch Family. That its members have ‘rallied to the call’ in such a tangible and demonstrative way is testament to the school’s proud history and its exciting future.

Principal Tom Batty, together with Chairman David Kemp and the School Council, have set the school on an exciting course, and this campaign has clearly illustrated that Scotch simply cannot be everything it aspires to be without its community pushing hard from behind. The Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science is the first in a series of exciting campus developments that will consolidate Scotch’s position as a leader in educating boys.

The success of the Capital Campaign for the Centre for Science is also a tribute to the energy, commitment and drive of Foundation President and Capital Campaign Committee Chairman Michael Robinson. Michael has led this campaign with distinction.

It is believed that the $20M result is the largest result for a single project in Australian independent schools’ history, a result that is a tribute to Michael’s leadership. The campaign could not have been in better hands, and I look forward to working with Michael as we continue to drive the Foundation’s support for the school.

I would also like to acknowledge the contributions made by the Foundation Board and the Capital Campaign committee. Members of these entities have worked with energy to advance Scotch. I also acknowledge the collaborative and respectful working relationship that the Foundation has with the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association, and I particularly acknowledge the leadership of Jonathan Buckley, who was OSCA President in 2015.

As well, I acknowledge and thank the Development Office staff for their dedicated work over the past year. It has been busy, at times even frantic, but it also has been so worthwhile.

One of the endearing outcomes of the campaign has been the unifying effect that it has had on our community. I sense that the project has galvanised the Scotch Family in a special and unexpected way. As the campaign has progressed there has been a palpable sense of purpose, and a determination to work together to achieve something very special.

I hope that everyone who has supported this project shares in the pride of seeing the building rise from its foundations, and, when it opens in October 2016, that they feel they have helped achieve something which is exceptional.

“I sincerely thank you all for your support, and look forward to your involvement in the work of the Scotch College Foundation in the future.”Tim ShearerScotch College Foundation Executive Director and Director of Development

The Foundation AGM and President’s Dinner, held at the Australian Club on Thursday 21 May 2015, was a memorable occasion where we were delighted to welcome current parent Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO as our guest of honour.

Professor Scheffer is a physician-scientist whose work as a paediatric neurologist and epileptologist at the University of Melbourne and the Florey Institute has led the field of epilepsy genetics over more than 20 years, in collaboration with

Professor Samuel Berkovic and molecular geneticists. This resulted in identification of the first epilepsy gene and many more genes subsequently. Guests also enjoyed hearing from Principal Tom Batty and Foundation President Michael Robinson.

Peter Henderson’s great commitment to ScotchThe Scotch Foundation is delighted to announce that Peter Henderson (‘57) has made a transformational commitment to the Capital Campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science. In recognition of Peter’s generosity, the school has determined that the foyer and atrium in the new Centre for Science will be named the ‘Peter Henderson (‘57) Foyer and Atrium’.

Peter Neil Henderson was born at Melbourne on 24 February 1939, the son of Ruth Everina (nee Macknight) and James Henry Lakin Henderson (‘21). Peter left the family farm, Yarrawah, at The Rock, New South Wales, to attend Scotch and follow in the footsteps of his father.

Entering Scotch on 10 February 1948, Peter joined his brother, John Conway Henderson, who was at Scotch from 1945 to 1951.

An active Scotch student in all areas, Peter won numerous prizes in the Junior School, and was a member of the 1951 Junior School cricket and football teams. In the Senior School, Peter was a member of the 1956 and 1957 2nd X\/Ills, and the 1957 2nd XI, and was a Probationer and the Guard Cadet Under Officer. As a boarder in Arthur Robinson House, Peter was a 1956 House Prefect and 1957 Vice Captain and Captain of Chess.

Peter matriculated in 1956, and in the 1957 Matriculation exams he won honours in biology, chemistry and physics. After leaving Scotch he studied medicine, graduating MBBS from Melbourne University in 1963.

He subsequently completed his ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH) and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1965, and later as a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).

Peter wrote the first six papers emanating from the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery at St Vincent’s Hospital, and was awarded a Smith and Nephew fellowship to study at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London during 1970.

On his return to Melbourne, Peter established the Oculo-Plastic and Lacrimal Clinic at the RVEEH in 1974 and practised as a specialist ophthalmic surgeon in Melbourne, developing new surgical procedure and instruments. He was Senior Ophthalmic Surgeon at the RVEEH from 1986–89 and was on the board of management of the hospital from 1988 until 1995, playing a leading role in the major reorganisation of the hospital’s Special and General Units, and the establishment of the Biological Research Centre.

Among his other appointments, Peter was Treasurer and Chair of the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia and Councillor, Treasurer and finally President of the RANZCO in 2003-2004. He was awarded the RANZCO College Medal in 2008 ‘for distinguished, meritorious and selfless service to the College community and to medicine’.

Peter was majority shareholder and Chairman of Placetac Pty Ltd which developed and operated the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit from 1984 to 2002 When asked why he decided to support the Capital Campaign so generously, Peter replied: ‘The Henderson family owes Scotch College a major debt for the education it has provided to four generations of our family.

‘My father Henry (“Chook”) Henderson attended Scotch from 1916 to 1921 in East Melbourne as a boarder; and interestingly he boarded at PLC in 1920 (as the only male boarder!). He rowed in the four seat in the Scotch 1921 Head of the River crew. After leaving school he became a prominent Riverina grazier.

‘My brother, John Conway (known as Ian or “Chook”) Henderson, attended Scotch as a boarder, first in McMeckan House and then in School House from 1946 to 1951, when he left to commence a career on the family farm. ‘I (“Chick”) boarded at Scotch from 1948 to 1956, initially in McMeckan House and then in Arthur Robinson House. In Arthur Robinson House, I was set a great example of integrity, endeavour and trust by the two housemasters, “Faf” Fleming (‘25) and “Gunner” Owen, both of whom had survived as prisoners of war in Changi Prison.

‘Their great example and the skill and devotion of many teachers at Scotch, provided me with a very sound education that served me well during my professional life as an ophthalmic surgeon.

‘My son, John Hunter (“Hendo”) Henderson, attended Scotch from 1985 to 1990, when he left to study medicine at the University of Melbourne, and he is now a general practitioner at Bannockburn.

‘Finally, I am delighted that in 2015 my twin grandsons, Otto and Finn Mezzetti (Year 7), have become the fourth generation of our family to attend Scotch.

‘ Philanthropy is a very rewarding for the giver, provided that the recipient of the philanthropy is both worthy and appreciative, as is the case with Scotch College.’

‘So I am delighted to be able to contribute to the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science Capital Campaign, which will provide current and future generations of boys with a sound understanding in both the basic and applied Sciences, that will be essential for students to acquire, to equip them to succeed in the very competitive contemporary technological world.

‘I understand that the $20 million target for this Capital Campaign will be achieved in the near future, and I congratulate Michael Robinson, Chairman of the Capital Campaign, Tim Shearer (‘85), Director of Development, and the Scotch Family for achieving such a challenging target during difficult financial times.’

The school is indebted to Peter for his philanthropic leadership. His donation has provided great impetus to the Capital Campaign, and his commitment to Scotch will impact positively on many generations of Scotch boys.

Bequest Program

Alexander Morrison was Principal of Scotch College from 1857 to 1903, and was instrumental in building the School into the leading educational institution that it is today. His vision, energy, financial management and Scottish thrift all combined to make him a remarkable Principal whose legacy we all still enjoy.

In 2003 it was decided to name the bequest society after Dr Morrison, to help perpetuate those qualities of nurturing and vision which were so characteristic of the man.

Anyone indicating that he or she will remember Scotch College through a bequest will automatically become a member of the Alexander Morrison Circle, regardless of the size of the bequest. Membership of the Circle is free, and is the school’s way of recognising the commitment and support of individuals towards the long-term health and excellence of Scotch College.

Scotch owes an enormous debt to the forethought and generosity of the men and women who have bequeathed funds and other property to the school to support its continuing development. These bequests are reflected in buildings, scholarships, endowments, books, equipment and land, and all this support has helped the school to fulfil its purpose and vision.

Scotch relies on the support of people with a firm commitment to all that the school stands for, to retain its pre-eminence among Australian schools. It also enables Scotch to attract a diverse range of students and the dedicated staff essential to excite and challenge those students.

The Alexander Morrison CircleThe Alexander Morrison Circle was formed in 2003 with 26 inaugural members. Membership has grown steadily, and the Circle now has 356 members.

The purpose of the Alexander Morrison Circle is to encourage members of the Scotch Family to make a bequest to the school. It also recognises those who have already made this generous commitment. Your membership of the Circle enables you to be kept informed of the achievements and activities of our boys. You will also be invited to special performances and events the school regularly holds.

Over the years the Foundation has received many unexpected bequests, and Scotch is most grateful for these bequests. However, once a person has confirmed a bequest, the Foundation believes it is important to acknowledge, recognise and thank the person confirming the bequest during his or her lifetime. This is the purpose of the Alexander Morrison Circle.

If you are considering including a bequest in your will to Scotch College, there are four options from which to choose:

1. Scotch College Building Fund

2. Scotch College Foundation Scholarship Fund

3. Scotch College Indigenous Scholarship Fund

4. Scotch College Foundation, as a contribution to its Capital Fund (income from which is paid each year to the school for its general purpose)

Scotch College recommends that you seek independent financial and legal advice in regard to the implications of making gifts or bequests of these types.

You may choose to discuss your wishes or ideas with Fiona Tuck, Foundation Manager on (03) 9810 4150, especially if you would like to tailor your gift to a particular purpose.

All communication with the school about bequests is, of course, treated in the strictest confidence.

Events and Awards

Silver to Scotch for Centre for Science Capital Campaign The Capital Campaign for the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science has received a silver award in the ‘targeted campaigns’ category of the Circle of Excellence awards program, conducted by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

CASE is an international professional association serving educational institutions, and the advancement of professionals who work on the institutions’ behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas.

The ‘targeted campaigns’ category of the CASE awards program included ‘organised initiatives that take place over a specific (finite) period of time to raise substantial funds for a specific purpose, such as scholarships, a department or unit, a capital project or other targeted goal’.

In the citation for Scotch’s winning entry the judges commented, in part: ‘The facility [Centre for Science] is a clear need for the institution, and the campaign effectively carried this message to key donors in a variety of creative ways, including video presentations for donors. Very well thought out campaign.’

In 2015 the CASE awards program received 3200 entries from educational institutions worldwide across a range of categories, and 312 winners were announced. Three Australian universities received awards, but Scotch was the only Australian school to receive an award. There were 34 entries in the ‘targeted campaigns’ category, and two silver and two bronze awards were given.

A very special thank you to Bec Marshall in the Development Office for organising the submission ahead of the CASE award program deadline.
