About UsAin Society is a registered charity providing cancer care services to cancer-stricken patients and their families, and active ageing programmes to the elderly regardless of race, religion and background. Since its inception in 2000, more than 31,000 individuals have benefited through a range of rehabilitative services and developmental programmes.

Its cancer care services include financial assistance, counselling and support groups, therapeutic play, social and recreational activities, spiritual and tuition classes, and life skills workshops. To educate the wider community on cancer prevention, the first cancer education bus in Singapore – a joint initiative between Ain Society and National Cancer Centre Singapore – was launched in 2015. The elderly in its active ageing programmes are engaged in interactive activities such as physical exercise, mental wellness and social activities together with their peers.

To cover its operating expenditure and to provide quality services and programmes to cancer-stricken patients and their families and the elderly, which are estimated at $2 million a year, Ain Society relies heavily on fundraising activities, public’s donation and support. As an approved Institution of Public Character (IPC) under the Commissioner of Charities, all outright cash donations to Ain Society are eligible for a 250% tax deduction.

Apart from providing cancer care programmes and services, Ain Society reaches out to the elderly through SAGA, providing mental and physical wellness, psycho-emotional well-being and therapeutic geriatric counselling activities. The programme aims to improve the quality of life of the elderly and to retain their dignity and purpose during their golden years.

By promoting active ageing through workshops and activities such as music and dance appreciation, qiqong, origami, sudoku, gin rummy and bingo, the beneficiaries are encouraged to stay active and to stay connected to the community. In FY2016, 89 beneficiaries, between 50 and 80-year-old participated in various active ageing activities and volunteerism initiatives organised by SAGA.

To make active ageing a positive experience for the beneficiaries, SAGA also collaborated with community partners such as Fei Yue Community Services and Esplanade in providing motivational talks and experiential learning opportunities.

Her new-found strength and positive spirit now see her enthusiastically contributing to the support group by giving advice to other beneficiaries, offering listening ear and a shoulder to cry on.

Chinese New Year CelebrationAin Society celebrated Chinese New Year for the third year in a row with a special lunch at Mackenzie Rex Restaurant. 50 guests comprising beneficiaries from its active ageing programme, board and staff members attended the celebration on 14 February 2016. The guests were treated to a festive raw-fish salad known as Yu Sheng and halal Chinese delicacies such as chilli crab and traditional style ha lok prawn. A lucky draw game was also conducted and three beneficiaries walked away with Chinese New Year hampers. To welcome the Chinese New Year with good luck, Mdm Linda Teo, Ain Society’s board member was appointed by the beneficiaries to present customary red envelopes or hongbaos worth $910 to Haji Md Yusof Ismail, Ain Society’s chief executive officer for its clubkidz programme.

World Cancer DayTo commemorate World Cancer Day, staff and volunteers from Ain Society came together to spread a message of hope to patients and the elderly at Assisi Hospice and HCA Kang Le Day Care Centre on 23 February 2016 and 25 February 2016, respectively. A symbol of hope for the fight against cancer – daffodil – was distributed to patients and the elderly together with a bookmark with inspirational quote. Other highlights of the day were the opportunity to interact and bond with patients and the elderly through games such as musical ball, and activities like sing-along and bookmark colouring. A red envelope or hongbao worth $20 was also distributed to each patient and elderly in celebration of Chinese New Year, which fall on the same month with World Cancer Day.

Overseas Learning Journey Fifteen staff and coordinators from Ain Society’s cancer care programmes and services – Serenity Cancer Care – embarked on an overseas learning journey to Manila, Philippines from 7 to 12 March 2016. With the aim to learn from other social service organisations about the best practices and activities for beneficiaries with cancer, the group visited the Carewell Community Foundation – a non-profit foundation that provides support, education and hope to persons with cancer and their loved ones as well as Tuloy Foundation – a home for refuge for street children. During the learning journey opportunity, the group members were introduced to new activities such as lebran dance and the method of growing plants through hydroponics and aquaponics systems. The group members also had the opportunity to witness values such as patience and resourcefulness through these activities. These visits gave the group members an insight into how the various social service organisations operate and improve the quality of life of their beneficiaries.

Family Engagement InitiativeWith the support of the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Fund, Ain Society’s cancer care programmes and services – Serenity Cancer Care – organised a family outing for its beneficiaries and caregivers on 15 March 2016. The aim was to provide opportunity for family bonding as beneficiaries and their families affected by cancer may not be able to experience doing activities together. 65 beneficiaries together with their family members attended an outing to Sentosa Island and participated in various outdoor activities such as riding the luge – a fun-filled gravity thrill ride and boarding skyride for a scenic bird’s eye view of the island, city skyline and South China Sea. A 15-minute tazkirah or sermon on Islam and gratitude was also conducted by Ustaz Ridhwan, a religious teacher from Darul Aman Mosque on that day. The outing was also made possible with the assistance from South East Mosque Cluster and its volunteers.

signature charity drive – SICC May Day Charity – the kolintang ensemble from Ain Society was invited to perform at its tea reception on 31 March 2016. Held at SICC, 17 staff and beneficiaries from its cancer care programmes and services – Serenity Cancer Care and Clubskidz – and an assistant trainer entertained guests with six unforgettable performances. The opportunity to showcase their talents through these performances would not be possible without the continuous support from SICC since 2014.

Projek KasihFor the fourth consecutive year, Ain Society’s charity show – Projek Kasih – was broadcast live on Suria, Mediacorp’s Malay television station on 8 April 2016, with a repeat telecast on 17 April 2016. Hosted by two popular television personalities and presenters, Mr Khairudin Saharom and Ms Nurul Aini, the two-hour star-studded charity show showcased performances from local artistes such as Ms Aisyah Aziz and Mr Fauzie Laily, alongside a renowned singer from Malaysia, Ms Siti Nordiana. Themed ‘Tabah’ or ‘Persevere’, this charity show also provided opportunity for some beneficiaries to share their stories of struggles and triumphs. Mr Ariffin Abdul Nasir, 23-year-old, who suffers from bone cancer and brittle bones due to treatment for cancer, relies solely on Mdm Sumiah, his 51-year-old mother. Mdm Sumiah, a cook at a food stall in Adam Road food centre starts work at 3am and ends at 1.30pm. She gets only one day off every two weeks. Despite her struggles to make ends meet, she is constantly worried about her son and has never fully enjoyed a day of rest. Fortunately through Ain Society’s serenity cancer care programmes and services, she finds respite in sharing her feelings with other members. The charity show was graced by Mdm Halimah Yacob, Speaker of Parliament and MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC and raised a total amount of $629,726. Funds raised through this charity show were channelled to Ain Society’s programmes and services for beneficiaries and their families affected by cancer as well as beneficiaries in its active ageing programmes. As at October 2016, there are 476 serenity cancer care cases and 76 serenity active golden ageing beneficiaries.

SICC May Day CharityIn its 45th year of giving back to the community, Singapore Island Country Club’s (SICC) annual signature charity drive – SICC May Day Charity – raised its record-breaking amount of $85,000 for Ain Society. From organising charity golf tournament to gala dinner at its premises, and fringe charity events, more than $1.2 million was raised for 15 charitable organisations serving various social and financial needs. The cheque presentation ceremony was graced by Mr Desmond Choo, MP for Tampines GRC, and cheque was presented to Mr Leslie Teo, Ain Society’s community engagement director by Mr Andrew Lim, chairman of SICC May Day Charity 2016 on 10 August at SICC’s grand ballroom. Funds raised through this charity drive will support Ain Society’s programmes and services to help cancer-stricken patients, their families and the elderly.

Di Hujung PelangiWith the aim to enrich the quality of life and create meaningful memories, Di Hujung Pelangi – an initiative to grant the wishes of terminal cancer beneficiaries – was introduced in 2015. Through this initiative, Mr Ariffin Abdul Nasir, 23-year-old, who is diagnosed with a Stage 4 bone cancer, had his wish for performing umrah or minor pilgrimage together with his mother realised on 12 May 2016. Ain Society tapped into funds from Projek Kasih charity show to support this initiative. In FY2016, three beneficiaries had benefited from this initiative.

ERA Focus Division Community Project To build self-esteem and integrate children and youths with cancer into the community after their cancer treatment, ERA Focus Division of HE Charity Group organised a power kids gym and birthday party sessions for beneficiaries in Ain Society’s clubkidz programme. Themed ‘Happiness and Joy’, the event was hosted by a local celebrity, Mdm Norsiah Ramly who entertained beneficiaries, staff and board members with her spontaneity and candour. The event dedicated to having fun saw beneficiaries participating in various games and activities on stage.

Aidilfitri with Singapore AirlinesSingapore Airlines (SIA) organised an evening of food and entertainment on 14 July 2016 to bring cheer to beneficiaries from various charity organisations during Hari Raya Aidilfitri. 40 beneficiaries from Ain Society together with their family members and caregivers were invited to attend the celebration with guests from various charity organisations. Held at SIA Group Sports Club, the beneficiaries and guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet dinner and performances by SIA’s talented cabin crew.

Serenity Active Golden Ageing Music and Dance Appreciation WorkshopAs part of the endeavour to promote active and healthy living amongst the senior citizens in Eunos, a group of 20 beneficiaries in Ain Society’s active ageing programme – Serenity Active Golden Ageing – were introduced to music and dance appreciation workshop. Held at Ain Society’s multi-purpose hall on 4 August 2016, the one-hour workshop began with a familiar folksong, Chan-Mali-Chan to encourage the beneficiaries to move to the beat. To overcome the initial awkward situations, Ms Pamela Wong, a certified belly dancer who was appointed to conduct the workshop led the group by tapping her feet and clapping her hands. After tapping and clapping activities, a joint movement of hips and hands was introduced and even the beneficiaries who were unable to stand due to their age joined in the fun. One of its beneficiaries, Mdm Lai Sun Yew, 87-year-old, who has benefited from this workshop shared that the workshop made her feel happy and she will make an effort to attend it every week. Mr Md Redwan Mohamed, Ain Society’s assistant director of projects added that he hopes the combination of music and dance will help the beneficiaries to be more confident and expressive while improving their balance and gait.

Singapore Repertory Theatre Stage ProductionAs part of its efforts to inspire, engage and entertain audiences of all ages, the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) invited 40 young beneficiaries with cancer from Ain Society together with their family members and caregivers to watch a popular stage production of the Three Little Pigs on 6 August 2016. The 50-minute production drew gales of laughter from the audience, especially the children when occasional local flavour such as So Malu and Double Whopper were thrown in. Songs like 1-2-3 Little Pigs had them bouncing and nodding along to the beat. The highlight of the production was when Mother Pig said “A family sticks together” as they came together to pit against the Big Bad Wolf. This scene struck a chord with the children as it showed them the importance of strong family ties and ways to overcome obstacles and challenges in life together as a family. This event helped the young beneficiaries to take their mind off their pain and it provided a platform for their family members and caregivers to unwind. Ain Society would like to thank SRT for their support in making a difference in the lives of its beneficiaries, their family members and caregivers.
