1. Welcome LettersEric DamI am proud to present the 2016 Annual Report from the Hanze University Foundation, reporting on activities that have had an impact on higher education in developing countries. Our Foundation focuses on educating people and investing in teaching facilities: contributing to our ambition of ‘professional education for all!’

Last year, the Hanze University Foundation intensified its focus on four themes: energy, health, entrepreneurship, and ICT. These themes are prominent in the northern region of the Netherlands and are also important drivers for development. In our projects, we also strive to support three pillars that are crucial for education:

• Staff training: quality education starts with teachers who are well-educated. We provide opportunities for staff at partnering institutions to develop their teaching skills and participate in training programs.

• Student scholarships: professional education for all includes the talented students who are unable to afford a post-secondary education. Carefully selected students are given the chance to worry only about their grades, and not their financing.

• Improvement of educational facilities: functioning school buildings, furniture, water, sanitation and electricity are essential. We ensure that partner schools have the skills and systems necessary to sustain a good learning environment. Since 2009, we have successfully completed projects in each of these areas.

As we move forward in 2017 and beyond, I am proud of what the Foundation has accomplished and excited about the future. Together, we will continue our efforts to stimulating sustainable vocational education abroad, channel social involvement within and outside Hanze UAS and maintain a system of financial support for staff and students from developing countries.

Linda MaatThis report covers the seventh year of operations of the Hanze University Foundation. A moment to reflect on what we achieved so far. Since our start as a small initiative in 2009, the Foundation has established solid relationships with eighteen educational institutions around the world and funded the post-secondary studies of more than fifty promising students in Africa and Asia. Developing countries need professionals across all sectors and education is central to producing those professionals.

In 2016 we hosted several fundraisers, including a book market, a business breakfast and three activities during the Christmas season. Thanks to these activities and many generous donations, the Foundation was able to support five projects. We invested in campus development in Benin, supported lecturers from educational institutes in Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda, and provided eight students with a scholarship to study health care in Kenya. You will find a description of all these projects in this annual report.

I am very proud of what we have achieved so far. We’ve had an enormous impact on students, staff and teaching facilities at universities, colleges and training institutes in several African countries. However, there is still so much to be done.

Next year, leading up to the 220th lustrum year of Hanze UAS, we hope to intensify the relationship with our sister institutions in Kenya by organizing a volunteer trip for staff members of Hanze UAS. The aim is to increase the involvement of staff members of Hanze UAS in the work of the Foundation, leading to an intensive relationship between the two institutions, but even more between individual staff members.

I would like to finish by thanking all of our sponsors who have supported us this year, perhaps for the first time, or as a recurring donation. The continuous support of students, staff and management at Hanze UAS and companies in the Northern part of the Netherlands makes our work possible!

a. Objectives

The objectives of the Hanze University Foundation are:

• To promote sustainable vocational education in developing countries.

• Maintain a scholarship scheme for students from developing countries.

• Encourage social engagement within and beyond Hanze UAS.

b. Target groupsThe Foundation focuses on a number of groups in the Netherlands and abroad:

• Vocational institutions and programs in developing countries that want to start, improve and/or expand their education.

• Young people from developing countries who can create a better future for themselves and their surroundings through education.

• Students, staff and alumni of Hanze UAS who desire to contribute to development cooperation.

• Companies in the northern Netherlands that want to demonstrate their social responsibility.

c. Focus countries and themes

In 2016, the Hanze University Foundation was active in Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. We support four educational areas that are major contributors to sustainable development:

• Energy: a key driver for sustainable growth. We are passionate about bringing energy subjects to the classrooms, and to the campuses.

• Entrepreneurship: entrepreneurs and SMEs kindle economic growth and create jobs, which is why we support entrepreneurial programs at several educational institutes.

• Healthcare: we support the staff and students at rural healthcare training colleges that at their turn serve their neighboring communities.

• ICT: we equip schools with ICT infrastructure and internet access, so students and staff members get access to all the information worldwide available in their particular discipline.

3. Our OrganizationThe Foundation is the driving force behind a multitude of higher education projects organized by Hanze UAS in developing countries.

The Foundation has three governing bodies: the Board, the Committee of Recommendation and the Review Committee. A Director and Communications Manager have been appointed to oversee the day-to-day management of the Foundation.

The Director and Communications Manager are responsible for the information and organization of fundraisers. They prepare the board meetings and are responsible for the management of the financial resources.

The Board appoints the staff and oversees (annual) plans, annual reports and proposals.

The Review Committee evaluates project proposals and provides a recommendation regarding the administration of the funds. The Committee of Recommendation connects businesses to the Foundation and supports fundraising activities.

Groups of student volunteers support the Foundation during fundraisers and events. They also motivate their peers to get involved and keep the social media channels and website up to date.

Hanze UAS began a partnership with the Esperanza University College in 2014. The amount raised by the

Foundation’s first Christmas crowdfunding activity, Be Behind Benin, was used to provide Esperanza with full scholarships for ambitious students, educational program development and required educational materials (i.e. books, projector, internet connection).

Assigned: € 21.500Actual expenses: € 13.500

Explanation: An amount of 8.000 is reserved for training of staff members in the Netherlands. The staff training is foreseen for 2017.

“Hi, my name is Sènami Houndayi. I study International Communication at Hanze UAS and am a volunteer at the Foundation. During the Christmas holidays I went to Benin to visit my family, and had a short tour of Esperanza University in Cotonou. Jean-Francois (responsible for international affairs) welcomed me to the university. He introduced me to his colleagues who are working on the project. They gave me some more information about the programme. There are not many entrepreneurs in Benin, stimulating entrepreneurship will contribute to the development of the country. There are no other universities in Benin that teach this subject. The university is quite small. All the classrooms have tables and chairs and that is basically it. There is one computer room where the students have classes a few

times a week. It was an impressive visit and special to see the university in real life. Esperanza is small and doesn’t have a lot of facilities. The programme teaches students all the skills they need for entrepreneurship. I think that this project can make a change for their students, who can make a change and contribute to the development of Benin!”

Summer school in the NetherlandsSchool: University of Cape Coast and Uganda Christian University

Countries: Ghana, Uganda and The Netherlands

Course names: Summerschool Doing Business in Europe and Global Health & Quantified Self Description:The future for developing countries lies in the development, production and export of goods and services in the global market. There is an urgent need for teachers in developing countries who have knowledge about the international business world, including Europe. Two lecturers from Uganda Christian University (Elsie Mirembe Nsiyona and Vincent Kisenyi) participated in the Hanze UAS’ summer school, Doing Business in Europe with a grant provided by the Foundation.

In 2016, the summer school Global Health and Quantified Self was offered for the first time. The program explores the aspects of globalisation and health that link to digital health and self-tracking. It gave two lecturers (Ewuradjoa Kumi-Kyereme and Joseph Oduro) from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana the unique opportunity to learn about the increasingly globalised world and digitalisation and its effects on health. This was made possible through a scholarship from the Foundation.

In addition to knowledge about the fields of business and health, they also learned from the manner of teaching at Hanze University. Their knowledge and new skills will be helpful at the universities where they work.

Assigned: € 10.000Actual expenses: € 10.385

Explanation: The costs of the summer school went up by about 100 euro per person.

“I studied Global Health and Quantified Self during the summer school programme because it was the most in line with my previous studies in Human Biology. The course was an eye-opener and taught me a worldwide view and gave insight into individual, community and worldwide health issues as well as the cultural differences that need to be overcome to appreciate tackling global diseases and infections more practically. My trip to the island of Schiermonnikoog was my best experience. It was such a lovely trip. I made a lot of friends and I am truly grateful for the Hanze Foundation for the financial assistance.” – Ewuradjoa Kumi-Kyereme

“The total experience at Hanze Summer School Doing Business in Europe was wonderful. The opportunity for a real life experience made it possible to learn more than what meets the eye. The lecture experience with clear integration of theory and practice was rewarding.” - Elsie Mirembe Nsiyona

Summer school UDBSSchool: University of Dar es Salaam Business School

Country: Tanzania

Description: Tanzania faces several challenges when it comes to education that is practical for society. New economic opportunities call for a different approach from education providers. The traditional economy courses are taught at rather high and abstract levels that put little emphasis on practical education needed by the majority of graduates in their day-to-day life. With an improving economic outlook, the society is changing rapidly and is asking for new practical programmes to solve knowledge gaps.

To face the challenges above, students and faculty from Hanze UAS’ International Business School (IBS) played an important role in establishing a new summer school in Tanzania in August 2016. The combined initiative is a cooperation with the University Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS) and strengthens the partnership between the two institutes.

Participants were divided into four teams and given an assignment specific to the ambitions of businesses in the local region. To maximise potential, all teams contained

both Hanze UAS and UDBS students. The summer school programme consisted of classes, business trips, site visits, consultancy reporting and a vibrant variety of

cultural and social activities. It is hoped the initiative will enhance the long term cooperation between all parties, benefiting students, faculties and businesses in Dar es Salaam and Groningen.

This project could not have been realised without the support of the Hanze University Foundation. The foundation made vital connections with UDBS, businesses in Dar es Salaam and delivered some of the crucial funding necessary to facilitate the participation of Tanzanian students in the project. During the program, the funds to mobilise the Dar es Salaam twenty local students and five local staff members to join the various business outings in Tanzania and to work with local entrepreneurs were covered by the Foundation.

Scholarships for medical studentsSchool: North Coast Medical Training College

Country: Kenya

Description:The Executive Board of Hanze UAS offered to support an educational project in a developing country in memory of the late Marian van Os. Their contribution lead to the support of eight medical students studying at the North Coast Medical Training College (NCMTC) in Kenya.

Six students (3 males, 3 females) who already started their studies at NCMTC can continue their studies through this external support. In addition, two male students were selected who had already registered and had been admitted in September 2015. However, they did not have sufficient funds to start the study. These students initially asked for support for the first year. If they achieve satisfactory results during their first year of studies, they may be request further funding for the last three years from the Foundation or another donor organization.

The donation to the scholarship fund of the NCMTC is sustainable, because part of the amount is given as a gift and partly a loan, depending on the expected salary after the completed study. Students will pay a portion of it back to NCMTC, which will help new students with sponsoring.

From 2018 onwards, the NCMTC scholarship fund will be filled with repayments of students and the aim is to be self-sufficient within a few years.

The students supported with the scholarship are: 1. Leonard Atongo - Clinical Medicine2. Nambasa Philemon - Clinical Medicine 3. Elijah Mwangambo - Nursing 4. Mwinyi Abdalla Mumbo - Nursing 5. Penina Manase - Nutrition 6. Tarasiano Nkanga - Nutrition 7. Binti Mwarabuni - Nutrition 8. Joyce Mwaka Jefwa - Nutrition

Assigned: € 15.907Actual expenses: € 15.907

Explanation: The original request was for 9 students, however one of them did not start the course and therefore did not receive a scholarship. Her funds will be allocated to another student in need during the next academic year. The name of the student will be presented in the next annual report.

Be Behind Benin - First Crowdfunding Project € 24.744 was raised by Hanze UAS staff, students and relations for the Esperanza University College in Benin, West Africa. This was well beyond the target amount of € 20.000. The funds were raised via the crowdfunding application on the Foundation’s website and donated Christmas gift packages from € 1.186 Hanze UAS employees.

Spring cleaning: from Hanze’s library to Turiani, TanzaniaIn March 2016, Hanze UAS librarians organized a Book Market at four Hanze campus locations. Each book cost € 2, and all proceeds were donated to the Turiani Nursing School. This year, second-year facility management students helped run the market. Hanze staff also donated books and magazines from their personal collection to be sold during the market. The week-long book market raised € 4.155.

Inspiration Breakfast 2016 Students and business representatives set their alarms early on June 1st for the seventh edition of the Inspiration Breakfast at the Energy Barn. The entire audience was treated to a delicious breakfast, information about the Foundation and pitches about our main themes: energy, entrepreneurship, ICT and healthcare. Each table was also challenged to work together to develop an idea that would support higher education in developing countries. The winning team took home the Inspiration Award. In total, € 8.500 was raised for the Turiani Nursing School in Western Tanzania.A huge thank you to everyone who came and made this event such a success!

‘Re-use Food for Good’ Lunch On October 28, the first-year International Facility Management students prepared a lunch using food that would have otherwise been wasted. The sales team, lunch team, logistics team, PR team, and decoration team created a wonderful menu using donated food from local restaurants, distributors and grocery stores. With the assistance of Eurest, the Hanze University’s catering team, the students cooked up a storm to deliver a delicious lunch for just € 5 per person. With additional support from the management and donations from Hanze staff and students, the lunch raised a total of € 1.330 for TSiBA Education in South Africa.

Earmarked donationsThe Hanze University Foundation is regularly approached with the question of whether one can make a donation through the Foundation to a specific project supported by the Foundation. In 2016, a total of € 4.919 was donated to NCMTC. Due to the fact that the Foundation has a long-term relationship with NCMTC, earmarked donations will remain welcome in the future.

Other donationsEvery year, the Foundation receives donations from generous individuals and organisations. Similar to previous years, members of the Executive Board and the Board of Trustees at Hanze UAS have donated (part of) their attendance fees to the Foundation, totaling € 16.500. Gert Jan Lankhorst, former member of Hanze UAS’ supervisory board, said farewell to his position at GasTerra. He invited friends and business relations to donate a farewell present to the Foundation, raising € 6.670. The sale of gently used Hanze UAS computers raised € 19.250. Furthermore, in December, donations for a TSiBA project to take place in 2017 totaled € 2.505.

7. Acquisition & Plans

a. Project AcquisitionProjects are acquired from contacts that have an existing relationship with Hanze UAS. In this manner, it can be determined whether the requesting party is reliable and capable of executing a project correctly. Projects are selected and evaluated by the advisory committee. If a project is approved, it is sent to the Board for final approval.

b. Project EvaluationA fixed format is used for the substantive and financial evaluation of projects. Evaluations of larger projects accompanied by an accountant’s audit to accurately track and monitor funds. Both assessment tools will be used in 2017. In addition, a number of projects will be checked in the course of 2017 to determine whether the funds were allocated for the right purposes. The aim is to not have costs related to these evaluations, by combining these trips with visits to other subsidized projects implemented by Hanze UAS. In order to continue carrying out quality project evaluations, the Foundation will focus on countries where Hanze UAS is already active.

c. Plans for 2017New and updated communication tools and ways of increasing the involvement of ambassadors will be the focus of 2017. This includes updating the Foundation’s website to make it more user-friendly and compatible all devices (mobile, tablet, PC). Sponsorship packages will also be developed for local businesses in order to inform them more about the benefits of supporting the Foundation. We also hope to expand the number of student volunteers and interns.

In the second half of 2017, preparations will be undertaken for Hanze UAS’ celebration of its 220th anniversary in 2018. Similar to 2013, a variety of fundraising activities will be organized by the university to support one of the Foundation’s projects.

Other successful activities such as the book market, the Inspiration Breakfast and the Christmas fundraiser will be continued.

8. Financial Summary

The seventh year of the Foundation was also a good year financially. A total amount of € 88.572 was raised. Employees of Hanze UAS, board members and local businesses generated the majority of the income.

The amount of € 69.564 was spent on projects that were approved and implemented in 2016. € 33.709 will be spent on projects that were approved in 2016 and will be implemented in 2017. The total expenditure of the Foundation in 2016 was € 103.072.

Personnel costs, office costs and publicity costs of the Foundation are covered by Hanze UAS and therefore do not appear in the budget. This means that 100% of all donations directly benefit the projects. The bank costs amounting to € 67 can be earmarked as the only administration costs.
