CHAIR’S REMARK

Chairman’s Summary 2016

The calendar year 2016 was a successful one for the McGill Division of Orthopaedic Surgery on many levels. In addition

to the large number of medical students who regularly rotate through our services, our division was responsible for

training and educating 36 residents and 10 clinical fellows across the Shriners/Montreal Children’s Hospital,

SMBD/Jewish General Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, and Montreal General Hospital sites. This teaching was diligently and

successfully carried out by our 8 permanent Research Faculty members in close collaboration with our 41 Orthopaedic

Clinical Faculty and 12 Affiliated Clinical Faculty members.

Our second-year residents successfully completed the Principles of Surgery (POS) Examination while the fifth-year chiefs

all passed their Royal College Final Examination, marking yet another year with a 100% success rate at both levels. Close

to half of the Faculty completed a Faculty Education Program consisting of a 6-week on-line pre-course and a one-and-a-

half day onsite symposium on the fundamentals of teaching and learning in present-day medicine. On the research

front, our faculty and residents produced over 160 peer-reviewed publications and brought in millions of dollars in peer-

reviewed grant funding. The hard work of our researchers and surgeons resulted in a plethora of research prizes and

awards at the provincial, national and international levels.

A particularly gratifying part of this position is the recruitment of dynamic and energetic new faculty to our Division. In

2016, St. Mary’s Hospital welcomed two new recruits: Dr. Jennifer Mutch and Dr. Anthony Albers. Dr. Mutch has sub-

specialty training in Sports Surgery and Upper Extremity Reconstruction while Dr. Albers completed his post-graduate

training in simple and complex Arthroplasty of the lower extremity. Their presence has added new ideas and elan to an

already outstanding Department at St. Mary’s Hospital. Further recruitment is under way by the newly created

Recruitment Committee which will further improve our orthopaedic corps across sites.

Apart from the Recruitment Committee, new divisional initiatives include the McGill Orthopaedic Alumni Network, the

McGill Global Health Initiative, and Far North Health Care. Our Program Director, Dr. Thierry Benaroch, is creating a

program to reconnect with our alumni with a semi-annual newsletter, alumni gatherings at national and international

orthopaedic meetings, and quinquennial symposia in Montreal. Dr. Ron Dimentberg got the ball rolling by organizing an

alumni dinner during the most recent AAOS meeting, establishing what we hope will become a tradition. Drs. Eric

Lenczner and Peter Jarzem, along with residents Ahmed Aoude and Abdallah Husseini, participated in the inaugural

global outreach by our division when they travelled to Haiti with Team Broken Earth to deliver expert surgical care in an

austere environment. This too represents the first of what will become a routine offering to our residents: the chance to

help those who are in the most need. Lastly, our division has been called upon to deliver orthopaedic care to our Native

Peoples in the North of Quebec. A program is being organized combining on-site and tele-consultation as well as surgical

care both in the North and at our McGill Centres.

In addition to these laudable accomplishments for which we are all proud, McGill Orthopaedics faces challenges. The

first is the future transition to Competence-by-Design (CBD) Residency Training, a landmark and even seismic shift in

how we train our young surgeons. McGill has been a leader in the design of this program at the level of the Royal College

and we foresee taking advantage of the expertise of our colleagues in other departments to help us prepare for this

change. In addition to the Faculty Education Program described above, on-going faculty development symposia within

the division will help to ensure we are ready and able to transition effectively to this new approach to resident

education. The second test confronting our division is the reduction in the number of trainees, both Canadian and

Middle Eastern, that we will be accorded. This will strain our manpower and will pressure the faculty to be even more

effective educators in the restricted time available to teach the residents.

In conclusion, 2016 was a very fruitful year on all levels of our academic mission. We will continue to build upon this

success to make McGill Orthopaedics one of the strongest programs in North America.
