Like the old saying “Time flies when you’re having fun!” another year has passed at the Kelowna Art Gallery. What a year it was! Visits to the Gallery increased by almost 7% over 2016 with nearly 27,500 visitors in 2017. Appetite for Art, our largest fundraiser, sold out and raised more money than ever in its history. There were more student tours in 2017, more summer camps, and more art classes. Family Sundays continue to generate increased visitation.

Most importantly - the Art! It was a wonderful year with exhibitions such as The Big Picture: A selection of large-scale works drawn from the permanent collection of the Kelowna Art Gallery and A Legacy of Canadian Art from Kelowna Collections, member exhibitions, and our satellite space at Kelowna International Airport.

Our curator, Liz Wylie retired in 2017 after ten important years of service. Liz has played a pivotal role at the Gallery and was instrumental in increasing the profile of the KAG nationally through the exhibitions she has curated over her 10 years with us. While we are happy for Liz in her retirement, she is missed by all of us at the Gallery for her hard work, her humour, and her vision for every exhibition at the Gallery. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Liz for her lasting contributions to the Kelowna Art Gallery.

The Nominating Committee conducted a skills matrix to identify areas where we could improve our expertise on our Board. Last year, we identified three areas for improvement: Human Resources, building and construction, and University Relations. Through this process we identified several new candidates and our Nominating Committee this year has the pleasure of not having to fill any vacant positions. We are proposing that Joanna, Candace, Dylana and Mary are all elected for additional two-year terms commencing in 2018. We have a great Board of directors with a diverse set of expertise and we look forward to working together and with our members to ensure that the Kelowna Art Gallery is reaching the highest professional standards possible. It has been a pleasure to work with each and every one of you.

As mentioned, 2017 was a great year for the Kelowna Art Gallery. Candace and Nataley worked hard to keep us on track financially and we finished the year with a slight surplus and maintained a strong financial position.

Of course, the Kelowna Art Gallery would not be able to function without its staff. If you don’t already know, the staff at the Kelowna Art Gallery are fantastic! They are a small, dedicated group, that work hard to make our guests’ experience the best it can be. From the Board of Directors, I want to take this opportunity to say Thank You! for all of hard work this year. It is a pleasure to have such a great team in place.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers of the Kelowna Art Gallery, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our members and friends for their continued support of the Kelowna Art Gallery and our mission to engage, inspire, and enrich the greater community through the exhibition, collection and interpretation of visual art. Your continued support will ensure that the Kelowna Art Gallery is a place that invites all of us to be inspired, to learn, to create, to debate and to be challenged within a greater community that values visual art as vital to its well-being.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is a place where members, visitors, and students of all ages come to be inspired, learn, create, debate, and be challenged. The past year has been one of many accomplishments, artistically and operationally. This Annual Report summarizes the excellent work undertaken by our dedicated team of professionals over the past 12 months.

Throughout the year, staff and our Board of Directors worked together to review our mission and vision and, as a team, determined that by bringing people and art together, the Kelowna Art Gallery has a significant social impact. Through our diverse programs, visitors have become more creative, more aware, and have gained new perspectives. We will continue to focus on and engage our visitors, inspire our audiences, and be innovative in the ways we gather people together to create community through art. We will expand our role in championing art, both in British Columbia, and nationally.

We have engaged diverse audiences by offering a program of rotating fine art exhibitions, educational programs and events, and acted as a resource in support of the development and growth of the visual arts and artists, in our region and beyond.

Ten unique exhibitions and accompanying publications (both print and digital) were originated by curator Liz Wylie, with the assistance of our registrar Clea Haugo and preparators Dylan Ranney and Maureen Lisle. We thank our curator Liz Wylie for her 10 years of exceptional programming for the Kelowna Art Gallery, and wished her well as she retired in Vancouver in May, 2017. We extend a huge thanks to Liz for her attention to originating and selecting artists and exhibitions that were relevant and significant to our community. Liz’s dedication to ensuring critical writing accompanied every exhibition, and her amazing attention to detail was exceptional. The search for her replacement continued throughout the 2017 year. As Liz had made exhibition plans for the Gallery well into the 2019 year, we have been able to continue with our exceptional exhibition program.

We were pleased to commission Dylan Ranney to create our fifth Artist’s Garden Project called Refuge, in the Rotary Courtyard Space. We were also delighted to commission artists Angelika Jaeger and Myron Campbell to produce new work for our satellite location at the Kelowna International Airport.

Behind the scenes, the Acquisitions Committee of the Board of Directors took some time off in 2017 to regroup, revisit our collections strategy and prepare to take on some major projects in 2018. The staff also performed a major capital retrofit of our permanent collection vault with financial support from the Department of Canadian Heritage. We were able to double the size of the permanent collection vault as a result.

The Gallery’s ambitious education and public programming department was led by Laura Wyllie, who was assisted by Bev Serviss and Ryan Trafanako. Due to the popular demand of our school tours in previous years, we hired Aryn Robidoux to join our School Tour team. We are happy to have a well-trained crew of 29 docents who assisted with delivering the Gallery’s tours and studio activities to the students of Central Okanagan Public Schools. We presented six community-based exhibitions in the Front Project Space. We focused our educational activities on partnering collaboratively with other community organizations to ensure that our activities were accessible and of real benefit to the community, and that a diverse array of scholastic programs and life-long learning opportunities were available to citizens of all ages.

Executive Director’s Report

Marketing and events coordinator Joshua Desnoyers has dramatically increased the Gallery’s public profile in regional and national media, and he has used social media in innovative ways. Joshua has also capably delivered amazing events, including our Gallery opening receptions, GO Parties, and our signature Appetite for Art gala, which set a record fundraising achievement in 2017. In addition, he has coordinated a significant number of rental events for both community-based and corporate organizations, which provided important earned revenues for the Gallery.

Kyle L. Poirier, the KAG’s graphic designer, produced three high-quality catalogues and four online publications in 2017. In addition, Kyle designed all of the Gallery’s ongoing and special events promotional and marketing materials. Kyle advances our IT capacities by continuing to update our website, and increasing digital access to the Gallery’s resources.

Our operations and membership coordinator, Hanss Lujan, has been the friendly face servicing your membership and making sure our day-to-day operations are running smoothly.

Thanks to our gallery assistants and Family Sundays assistants for their commitment to offering excellent hospitality to 26,500 visitors in 2017, an increase of almost 6 percent.

We were open to the public for 2,198 hours last year. Gallery volunteers number over 50 dedicated individuals, and we are grateful for their invaluable assistance with school tours as docents, and with Gallery openings, GO Parties, and special events. I am pleased to report that our auditors, KPMG, presented our 2017 financial statements and a year-end audit that met all the requirements required for a non-profit corporation in BC. I am happy to report that the Kelowna Art Gallery is, again, in a solid financial position, with a surplus posted for 2017.

As always, I would like to thank each member of the Board of Directors who has dedicated his or her time, resources, and expertise, to govern this very special organization. I am indebted to each one individually for the professionalism and kindness he or she has extended to me and to all who work and volunteer at the Gallery. Thank you to each and every Board member for sharing their commitment and expertise with the Kelowna Art Gallery. Finally, we are deeply indebted to all our donors, members and sponsors for their continued support. We gratefully acknowledge the ongoing financial assistance of the City of Kelowna, the Province of British Columbia, The British Columbia Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, Central Okanagan Public Schools, the Central Okanagan Foundation, Telus Community fund, the Audain Foundation, the Vancouver Foundation, the Canadian Museums Association, and Young Canada Works.

Respectfully submitted,

Nataley NagyExecutive Director

A Legacy of Canadian Art from Kelowna Collections

The Big Picture: A selection of large-scale works drawn from the permanent collection of the Kelowna Art Gallery

Treadgold / Bullock Gallery

November 5, 2016 to January 22, 2017

Drawing from LifeDrawing from Life showcased new works in large-scale drawings by eight local artists: David Alexander, Rose Braun, Jane Everett, Wanda Lock, Amy Modahl, Gary Pearson, Sage Sidley, and Johann Wessels. Some works were ephemeral – executed on the walls for the show, and erased afterwards.

February 4 to April 16, 2017

FabricationsThis exhibition featured the work of four women artists from different regions of Canada, all of whom work in installation. The title of the show, Fabrications, refered to the very physical making of things, as each of the artists were involved in incredibly labour-intensive processes to realize the completion of their pieces. The artists were Yael Brotman, Libby Hague, Laura Vickerson, and Gisele Amantea.

April 29 to June 25, 2017

The Big Picture: A selection of large-scale works drawn from the permanent collection of the Kelowna Art GalleryThe Big Picture featured a selection of large-scale works drawn from the permanent collection of the Kelowna Art Gallery. One hallmark aspect of modernist painting in the post-World War II era of the last century is its increasing size, sometimes referred to as “Heroic”. The Kelowna Art Gallery owns several works of art by living artists that have been executed in large scale, and had the opportunity to pull them out of the vaults for this exhibition.

July 1 to October 15, 2017

A Legacy of Canadian Art from Kelowna CollectionsThis exhibition celebrated Canada’s 150th Anniversary by bringing together significant Canadian works of art from private collections throughout the Kelowna area for visitors to view and enjoy.

November 11, 2017 to January 7, 2018

Howard Podeswa: A Brief HistoryA reflection on the current state of the world, Toronto-based artist Howard Podeswa’s exhibition, A Brief History, articulated an end-of-times cosmology, inspired by artistic and scientific visions.

October 22, 2016 to February 12, 2017

Germaine Koh: Home Made HomeVancouver-based artist Germaine Koh worked with the new trend of the micro-home in her two-part installation for this show. A modular sculptural work was in the gallery space, and a lofty infill-home was built in the Galleria area.

February 18 to March 26, 2017

Double Vision: Connor Charlesworth and Malcolm McCormickThese two emerging local painters both showed new work. McCormick challenged the accepted usual installation of paintings on the wall by embedding his canvasses into holes in drywall, which in turn leaned on the wall of the gallery.

April 1 to July 9, 2017

One on One: Inheritance: Amy Malbeuf Curated by Cathy MattesThe Kelowna Art Gallery was pleased to be working with independent curator Cathy Mattes, who is based in Sprucewoods, Manitoba. She is a Michif curator, writer, and art history professor at Brandon University, in Brandon, Manitoba. Mattes elected to work with Amy Malbeuf, who is a Métis visual artist from Rich Lake, Alberta.

July 15 to September 24, 2017

Nikki Middlemiss: Scaffolding for MinutiaeThis Montreal-based artist exhibited labour-intensive works on paper that floated from the walls out into the viewers’ space. They were subtle and tactile, and created an effect that was ethereal, yet embodied.

September 30, 2017 to January 14, 2018

Jane Kidd: CuriousIn Curious, Jane Kidd explored the human/nature relationship through woven tapestry. This included works from her Curiosities and Wonderland series drawing attention to pertinent contemporary issues, such as genetically modified and engineered organisms, and the destruction of the environment.

The Artist’s Garden Project: Wanda Lock and Rena Warren: Escape ArtistsThe two artists’ vision involved a built structure that looked old and abandoned, and overgrown with plants that perhaps held a creature that eventually escaped. As well as plants, other elements included statuary, lighting, and various old chains.

May, 2016 to May, 2017

The Artist’s Garden Project: Dylan Ranney: RefugeThis courtyard project was created by local artist Dylan Ranney. Think back to your childhood, and, if you were fortunate enough to grow up with any amount of contact with the natural world – even if it was only an empty lot near your home – you may have had the idea of creating a hide-out there.

Acquisitions and Collection Room Renovation

Acquisitions 2017

Collection Room Renovation

The Kelowna Art Gallery retrofitted our collections vault in October 2017.Before the retrofit, the space had 18 foot tall storage racks and shelves, and a portable staircase. This made the higher storage areas very difficult to access.

After the refit, the storage racks were reduced to 9 feet, and a mezzanine with fixed stairs was installed. This mezzanine reclaimed all of the unusable space, and the collections vault now has ample space to store the Gallery’s current collection and any future acquisitions.

The Public Programming Department had another great year, filled with a range of programs that engaged and inspired thousands of visitors to create and connect with art. We had an increase in attendance for almost every existing program, including our school tour program, Family Sundays, Art Break spring break camps, Art Adventures summer camps, Wittle Warhols for toddlers, and our Connect art program for adults with developmental disabilities. We also introduced an art program for the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club, which provided at-risk youth a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment to make art and engage in discussions about art and society. Our educational tour program continued to expand up to Grade 12. In addition, we led several workshops for seniors, individuals who are visually impaired, English as a Second Language (ESL) students, and early childhood education teachers. Our education programs help all ages to develop skills for experiencing and interpreting works of art. All tours are complemented with hands-on art lessons that explore a variety of artistic media, because we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to express themselves through the arts. For our youth and adult art classes and workshops that run year-round, we continued to recruit new instructors and focused on offering a diverse range of learning opportunities for all members of the community.

The Gallery purchased advertising space to promote our exhibitions in national publications such as Border Crossings, Canadian Art, and in regional ones, including Galleries West, and Preview – The Gallery Guide.

Efforts to attract tourists in 2017 included a feature in Tourism Kelowna’s Official Visitors’ Guide, as well as listings in a monthly Events Hot Sheet distributed to guests and concierges at local hotels. Rack cards and information were distributed through the visitor information centre, and also at the Downtown Kelowna Association visitor kiosk in Kerry Park. Tourism Kelowna, the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce, and the Downtown Kelowna Association continued to feature many articles and event listings on their respective websites.

The Kelowna Art Gallery continues to connect with members and interested individuals through a variety of marketing materials and communication channels, including a monthly e-newsletter, and our Journal publication, which is printed three times annually, as well as through invitations to opening receptions, special events, and other public programs.

In 2017, social media remained one of the most immediate and effective marketing tools for the Gallery. The Gallery’s Facebook page closed in on 2,500 likes, our Twitter followers numbered over 4,700, and our Instagram account surpassed 1,500 followers. By year end our YouTube page offered access to 63 videos and had over 14,000 views in total.

In closing, the Gallery would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who continue to help to make our fundraising events and opening receptions so successful. Please take a moment to recognize their efforts by reading the names listed in the Volunteers page in this report.

Appetite for Art Fundraiser

Our Appetite for Art Fundraiser, held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at the Kelowna Art Gallery, was another sold-out success! Proceeds raised went to support educational and children’s programming at the Gallery.

Those in attendance were invited to embark on a “walk in the woods” and experienced a captivating evening that featured woodland décor, from striking birches to majestic conifers. Guests were treated to delicious local food prepared by BNA Brewing Co. & Eatery, Joy Road Catering, Okanagan College Culinary Arts Program, Sandrine French Pastry and Chocolate, and Waterfront Wines. Menu items were paired with beverage tastings from Mission Hill Family Estate, Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery, and Tree Brewing Co.

Once again, Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars served their delicious brut. Over thirty artists contributed work to the art auction, and over forty businesses donated silent auction items. Guests mingled, bid on art, savoured some of the finer things in life, and were treated to lively performances by Kinshira Performance Troupe.

Walker Real Estate returned for the third consecutive year as presenting sponsor, along with supporting sponsors Farris, Vaughan, Wills, Murphy LLP, RBC PH&N Investment Counsel, KPMG, and August Luxury Motorcars. Chris Walker, host of Daybreak South on CBC in Kelowna, once again excelled as emcee and auctioneer for the evening. CBC Kelowna and The Daily Courier were media sponsors. Please see page 17 to view a full list of all the generous supporters, sponsors, donors, and artists involved in this exciting event.

GO Party! Event

The Kelowna Art Gallery’s popular GO Party! series continued in 2017 with another sold-out event. For one night only, on November 17, 2017, guests were invited to escape to a Tin Foil Ball at the Kelowna Art Gallery for a fun evening inspired by the shimmering aesthetic of tin foil.

The evening featured DJ Invizible performances, a massive four-legged stiltwalking creature courtesy of Kinshira Performance Troupe, and also a surprise show from magician and illusionist Freaky Fisher. Attendees came dressed in their shiny finest, enjoyed cocktails in the Tin Foil Lounge, and generally had a (tin foil) ball!

Tin Foil Ball was generously presented by Meiklejohn Architects Inc., supported by Mission Hill Family Estate, Tree Brewing Co., Okanagan Spirits, and New Horizon Productions.

Please see page 17 to view a full list of all the generous supporters, sponsors, and donors for this event.

KELOWNA ART GALLERY ASSOCIATIONNotes to Financial Statements (continued)

Year ended December 31, 2017

1. Significant accounting policies (continued):

(c) Contributed services:

Individuals and organizations contribute numerous volunteer hours each year to assist theArt Gallery in carrying out its operations. The Art Gallery subleases its land and buildingfrom the City of Kelowna for annual rent of $1, plus applicable property taxes. Because ofthe difficulty of determining the fair value, contributed services and business premisesrental are not recognized in the financial statements.

(d) Cash and cash equivalents:

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand and short-term deposits, which arereadily convertible into cash.

(e) Tangible capital assets:

Tangible capital assets are recorded at cost, less accumulated amortization. Amortizationis provided for using the following methods and annual rates:

Asset Basis Rate

Furniture and fixtures Declining balance 20%Computers Declining balance 30%Leasehold improvements Straight-line 10 years

When the Art Gallery's management determines that certain tangible capital assets nolonger contribute to the Art Gallery's ability to provide services, the carrying amount ofthese assets are written down.

(f) Permanent collection:

The Art Gallery’s permanent collection, ownership of which rests with the residents of theCity of Kelowna, is not capitalized. Additions to the collection are expensed in the period inwhich the item is acquired. KELOWNA ART GALLERY ASSOCIATIONNotes to Financial Statements (continued)

Year ended December 31, 2017

1. Significant accounting policies (continued):

(g) Non-monetary transactions:

Donations of art work, other than cultural property art work, are recorded as donations atappraised fair market value once the appraised fair market value is determined and thedonation is accepted by the Art Gallery's Acquisition Committee.

Donations of cultural property are recorded as donations at appraised fair market valueonce the donation is accepted by the Art Gallery's Acquisition Committee and certified bythe Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board as cultural property.

Other non-monetary transactions are measured at the more reliably measurable of the fairvalue of the asset given up and the fair value of the asset received unless the transactionlacks commercial substance or the transaction is an exchange of a product held for sale inthe ordinary course of business, in which case, the transaction is measured at the carryingamount of the asset given up.

(h) Use of estimates:

The preparation of the financial statements requires management to make estimates andassumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure ofcontingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reportedamounts of revenue and expenses during the year. Significant items subject to suchestimates and assumptions include the carrying amounts of tangible capital assets. Actualresults could differ from those estimates.

(i) Financial instruments:

The Art Gallery measures cash and cash equivalents, and restricted cash and cashequivalents at fair value, and accounts receivable, accounts payable, and accruedliabilities at amortized cost. Changes in fair value of cash and cash equivalents, andrestricted cash and cash equivalents are recognized in the statement of operations in theperiods in which they arise.
