IamincrediblyproudofourFestivalstaffheadedbyExecutiveDirectorMeaganIverson,oftheFestivalBoard,andofyou--oursupporters.Witheveryonepitchingin,2020anditsunprecedentedchallengescontinuetobemetheadon.Thegenerousongoingsupportofoursponsorsandcontributorsdeservesspecialmention.ThereimaginedvirtualFestivalFaireinAugustwasajoyouscelebrationandafiscalsuccess-MeaganandherhardworkingFestivalFairecommitteeoutdidthemselves.Lookingahead,theChristmasConcertshouldbeanexceptional,funevent.Fromthebottomofmyheart,thankyoutoallforsteeringtheFestivalthroughtheseunchartedandroughwaters.Todaymarkstheendofmy3-yeartermasPresident.Ihavelearnedmuchandhaveenjoyedtheopportunity.Withyourapprovaltonight,ClydeThompsonwilltakeoverasPresident.ClydeisawonderfulmusicianandpersonwhowillexpertlyleadtheBoardforward.Weallwanta2021SummerFestivalandwillworktirelesslyforthistohappen.

Thisyear,whichhasbeenabundantwithheartbreakingcancellationsandalossoflivemusicinallourlives,hasalsobeenabundantwithcreativityandhope.OurcommitmenttothemissionofSunriverMusicFestivalisstrongerthanever.Theworld-classmusicalexperiencesyou’vecometoknowandlovewillcontinueasweareactivelyandcreativelyplanningforthe44thannualSummerFestivalevennow.ThisyearhasalsobroughtmultiplechangeswithintheFestivalstaff.PamBeezley(ExecutiveDirector)andRobinBurford(TicketOfficeManager)bothhadtheirretirementsplannedfor2019-2020followingdecadesofservice.PamandRobineachremaincloselyconnectedtotheFestivalandweareindebtedtotheircontinuingadvice,consultation,andfriendship.WealsothankPhillipRuderforhis3yearsasPresidentoftheBoardashehasbeenanexemplaryleaderandadvocate.ItisanhonortobeentrustedasastewardofthismissionintheExecutiveDirectorrole.Asthisyearofdifficultiesbeyondanyofuseverimaginedhasdemonstrated,wearemorethanconcerts–Wearecommunityandweareacultureofcreativity. ofYAS!Celebratingits25thyear,theYoungArtistsScholarshipprogramhasawarded$586,250to177CentralOregonmusicstudents.Thisyear,24classicalmusicstudentsages11to24wereawarded$35,000.

VisitourYouTubechanneltoenjoythisyear’sYASconcert.Thepublicconcert,usuallydesignedasafreegifttothecommunity,wascancelledduetoCOVID.AconcertDIDstilloccurinJuly,andonlyaudiencepresentwereparentsofthelimitednumberofperformers.FutureFilmworkswashiredtodocumentaprofessionalrecordingofthesewonderfulperformancessoallcanenjoyviathemagicoftheinternet!

¯ InconnectionwithDecember’sChristmasconcert,featuredartistAaronMeyerspentawholeweekworkingwithEVERYstudentatThreeRiversSchoolonanintensivemusicproductionproject.

¯ ”OtterOrchestra”atThreeRivers,ledbyAJJimenez,kickedoffthe2019-2020schoolyearwithlivelyclassesofnewandreturningstudents.Thisafter-schoolorchestraprogram,fundedentirelybytheFestival,looksforwardtoresuminginearly2021.Privatelessons,smallsectionals,andonlineexperienceswilllikelyresumesooner.

¯ OngoingmusiceducationpartnershipwithLaPineSchoolsincludedtheguitarclassledbyRichardLighthillaswellassupportingtheschools’growingdrama,choir,andbandclasses.

¯ TheseeducationalprogramsaremadepossiblethroughindividualdonationsandbygrantsfromSunriverRotaryClub,SunriverWomen’sClub,andBenningtonProperties.

KELLYKUO,currentlyArtisticDirectoroftheOregonMozartPlayers,isanOregonnativepraisedbytheCincinnatiEnquireras“aleaderofexceptionalmusicalgifts,whohasacleartechniqueonthepodiumandanimpressiverapportwithaudiences,”MaestroKellyKuobringsadynamicversatilityandnuancetoadiverserepertoire,whichincludesover90operasandanexpansivesymphonicrepertoireaswell.RecentengagementshaveincludedproductionswithLyricOperaofChicago,SeattleOpera,CincinnatiOpera,IndianapolisOpera,andtheJaniecOperaCompanyoftheBrevardMusicCenterandconcertswiththeMemphisSymphonyOrchestra,MaltaPhilharmonicOrchestra,IndianapolisChamberOrchestra,LexingtonPhilharmonic,andBalletFantastique.In2008,MaestroKuobecamethefirstconductorofAsiandescenttoleadaperformanceattheLyricOperaofChicago,makinghiscompanydebutwithGershwin’sPorgyandBess.KuocontinuestoconcertizeastheonlypianisttohavestudiedwithtwopupilsofRussianvirtuosoVladimirHorowitz.BRETTMITCHELL,currentlyMusicDirectoroftheColoradoSymphonysince2017,hasbeenhailedforpresentingengaging,in-depthexplorationsofavarietyofclassicalprograms.ThroughouthisColoradotenure,hehasledtheorchestrainthemajorityofitsclassicalperformances,aswellasawidevarietyofspecialprogramsfeaturingsuchguestartistsasRenéeFleming,Yo-YoMa,andItzhakPerlman.

From2013to2017,MaestroMitchellservedontheconductingstaffoftheClevelandOrchestra.From2007to2011,MitchellledoverahundredperformancesasAssistantConductoroftheHoustonSymphony.Mr.Mitchellisalsoindemandasaguestconductor.His2020-21seasonfeaturesreturnengagementswiththeLosAngelesPhilharmonic,ClevelandOrchestra,andHoustonSymphony,aswellasdebutswiththeNorthCarolina,FortWorth,andPasadenasymphonies.OtherrecentguestengagementsincludetheDallas,Detroit,Indianapolis,Milwaukee,Oregon,SanAntonio,SanFrancisco,andVan-couversymphoniesandatwo-weektourwiththeNewZealandSymphonyOrchestra.
