Introduction
We thank God almighty for
giving a fruitful year of service to
the poor and downtrodden. We
have been blessed immensely
by God as we have been able
to carry out many useful services
to the needy. We were able to
provide excellent services to the
Girl children affected HIV and
have been appreciated by the
Child Welfare committee of
Chittoor District. This is the only
residential care home for HIV
infected girls in Chittoor district
and we are very proud of this service to the district. Our focus has been on the
poor dalits, tribal people, disabled and women and we were able to carry out
specified services to them. The vocational training for the disabled people at
Redhills at Chennai has been progressing very well and is a source of joy for the
disabled people as they are able to get good training at the Centre. We thank
all the donors, organisations and CSR sections of Tech Mahindra and Club
Mahindra for their support. Of this the most notable has been the support
received from Habitat for Humanity India & Eicher Foundation in constructing 150
toilet cum bathrooms for the low income group people in Thiruvottriur and
construction of 15 new houses and repair of 25 houses for the Irula Tribal people
at Sadaiyan Kuppam,Thiruvettriour, in Chennai Tamil Nadu. This has given us a
new direction in our services and we believe that we will add new dimensions to
our services for the poor and downtrodden.
Sincerely
Seva.S.A.Chelladurai

ATSWA Rehabilitation Centre for Children At Risk
ATSWA Rehabilitation Centre
for Children at risk is a home for
HIV infected and affected girls
whose parents, either or are
both are HIV positive or who
could have succumbed the
dreaded HIV/AIDS. The
children are drawn from
several areas not just
Sathyavedu Mandal but even
as far as Thirupathi as the aim of
the centre to provide a caring
home with all facilities to the
HIV infected and affected girls who are vulnerable and are also at risk. The home
was brought on as an institution which could bring a change in the lives of not just
the HIV infected and affected girls but also the parents, as well as the community
in which they live. Some or even a sizeable numbers of mothers are female sex
workers, and it was decided to counter and reduce the spread of HIV infection
in the area as many female sex workers eventually turn out to be HIV positive and
then perish later. The home was to be for daughters of commercial sex workers
to prevent them from becoming sex workers and it was approved in April 2011
but with a slightly modified theme, that would accommodate the girls whose
parents are HIV positive either
living or deceased and that the
home would accommodate 60
HIV infected/affected girls.
The objective of the
Programme is to provide
comprehensive care and
support for HIV infected and
affected girl children and to
ensure improved health status
and also to help their families
and their siblings in the community to have regular income through micro credit
based income generation programmes. The Project has been approved for 60
children.
Currently there are 63 Children in the home. Of them 39 are HIV Negative and 24
children are HIV positive. They attend different school due to age and language
as this area is a bilingual area where people speak Telugu and Tamil.

3. Community Outreach Programmes of the centre
i. Free Food Provisions for 60 families
This programme has been initiated to
help the parents/Guardians of the home
children who are very poor and who are
very weak to work so that they would
have food to eat. This is because they
generally don’t get jobs to work as they
are HIV and as a result suffer in poverty
which affects them badly as they have
to take proper food to take the ARV
drugs. The Parents/Guardians are called
for a meeting at the Home to distribute the food grains which consists of 10Kg Rice, 3Kg
Dhall, 1Kg Oil 1 Kg Sugar, 2 kg Salt, 1kg Chillie powder, 1kg other masala items and also
200ml Coconut oil.
11
ii. Income generation Programme – for parents/guardians of home children
Ten parents/Guardians are selected
every year out of the 60 to extend a
support of Rs 5,000/- towards starting a
self Employment income generation
venture to enable them to generate
income for their families so that this
would help them in someway apart
from the food provisions. Most of them-
32 people went in for raising Goats that
require no tough tasks or investment s
but that which guarantees good returns in short
period. 9 others have gone in for getting either a
cow or a buffalo as that also gets steady returns.
However they use their kin who are not HIV
positive to milk their cows/Buffaloes. Of the
parents/Guardians one person who took up ice
selling under other business passed away due to
HIV. Currently 50 of the 60 parents have been
covered and only 10 parents need to be covered
by this self development programme.

4. Other Programmes;
i. Tailoring and Kitchen gardening Programme.
The two programmes are
conducted for the children
of the Rehabilitation centre
as work experience
programme. The promotion
of Kitchen garden
programme is also done at
community level especially among the parents
/guardians of the home children as well as the parents/Guardians of HIV positive boys in
the community. This is done so they would consume vegetables and greens to boost their
strength in their bodies.
12
II.Family Counselling
The HIV positive parents/Guardians and also
women who indulge in commercial sex
activities are provided counseling to avoid
multi partner
sex and
unprotected
sex to avoid
getting HIV
and STD
infections.
They are also
counseled
into taking the ARV drugs regularly and to go for CD4
testing. They are also impressed on the need to take
more vegetables and greens which they can cultivate
in their own homes.
5. Accreditation
The Home – ATSWA – KNH rehabilitation
Centre for Children at Risk is visited
every month by the Doctors of the State
Health Department, Officers of the
Social Welfare Department of Andhra
Pradesh and the officials of the Child
Welfare Committee – CWC. The homes
of ATSWA are rated as model homes (
including this home) as they provide
very good facilities and are maintained
well. Members from Service
organizations such as Rotary & Lions
Clubs visit the Home and Encourage the
children and appreciate the activities of
the home. The Local Magistrate is a regular visitor to the home. The home has all
committees including Child protection
Committee.
The land in which the Centre is located
measuring 2 acres (costing about 2 crores
now) has been given free by the Local
Panchayat to ATSWA to carry out social
welfare activities after watching the
development work carried out by ATSWA in
the region. The local people are very happy
that the Rehabilitation centre for Children at
Risk has come up in the land.
13
After School Support for Poor Dalit and Tribal Children
Poor Dalit and tribal children often drop out of
school in Chittoor district due to non
availability of educational support as their
parents are illiterates. The School dropout rate
for Andhra Pradesh is 21% and will be even
higher in the most backward district of
Chittoor
district.
The
Dalit
and
Tribal
people
lack regular income and whatever they get is
meager as many of them have loans with the land
lords. The other problem is alcoholism and families
suffer due to this. This affects the Children and their
studies as well and they are unable to study at
home even if they want to. In order to give new life to such children and to help them
in their studies and also to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy unemployment and
diseases ATSWA decided to tackle it at the root by taking the after school support to
these children by establishing after school tuition centre at Madanambedu in
Sathyavedu Mandal of Chittoor district.
In the centres children converge after school. They get to have a wash to make them
feel fresh and ready. They also get some nutritive snacks
to help them get strengthened. Afterwards the children
are segregated according to their classes so proper
attention could be given to them. In the first session they
are helped with their home work and then they are left
for supervised study. Doubts are cleared as and when a
child raises and the last session is to ensure that the
children have imbibed something in the study period.
Periodical tests are given to increase their confidence
in attending tests. This is because children fear
examinations and this affects the dalit and tribal
children very badly as they have none to support at home in studies. When they fail in an
examination the children are taunted by the class teacher and this invariably leads them
to lose interest only to finally drop out of school. ATSWA believes that by strengthening
the resolve, self esteem of the children much could be achieved in breaking the cycle
of poverty illiteracy unemployment and diseases.
Currently 40 children study in the programme at Madanambedu.
14
Rural Women Empowerment
Most of our target women are Dalit and Tribal
communities who are in the lowest strata of
society. The condition of women in Indian
society is forced to dependent on their male
partner. From her childhood, she depends on
her father, brother (younger and elder) and then
husbands. The individuality of women is
restricted
and she
cannot
think other
than the
welfare of the families by foregoing her own wishes
and likeness.
The situation becomes all the more worse for a Dalit
woman to live. She is forced to depend on her
husband. Whatever she earns must be given to the
male partner of the families and he will look after
the maintenance or gives some amount with which women had to manage. This
programme empowers the individual women by helping them to gain confidence,
strength, and power to earn more income and take decisions on economic matters and
sets example for many others by producing better income and living a better life.
This year we were able to take up Women empowerment programme at Kadapakkam
village where Irula Tribal people live. This village was adopted by ATSWA Trust after the
floods of 2015 November-December. Women Self Help Groups were formed and they
were helped to start self employment with the help of CSR arm of Club Mahindra. This
sponsorship from has helped in the purchase of a Plate and tumbler making unit from
betel nut barks. This is a product in demand as is natural product and a waste one too.
As it is an organic product the finished products are sold out. Six women SHG groups are
involved in it and they are able to earn on average Rs 1,500/- a month after deducting
all the expenditure. This income is right at their home without having to go anywhere for
employment with a convenience that they can attend to other jobs as well during the
day. As years go by the number machine units will increase thereby multiplying the
income reaching the long term goal.

Disability - Community Based Rehabilitation for the Disabled
The Community Based Rehabilitation
Project in the central Chittoor district with
Chittoor town as the headquarters has
been functioning since January 2011 and
has been rendering good service to the
people with disabilities in 8 blocks. There
are villages tucked deeper inside hilly
terrain and
access is
difficult also
as road
facilities or
transport
facilities are
not good enough. The Staff of the project of ATSWA Trust
reach out to them extending regular services to people
with disabilities. The area selected is a very backward and
downtrodden one, mostly inhabited by dalits and tribal
people – the so called untouchables. The services have
greatly enriched the lives of the disabled people and have
brought appreciable improvement.

ATSWA works for people with disabilities
tirelessly and the District Collector’s Office
with the department of disability and others
have selected ATSWA as the best working
NGO in the field of Community based
Rehabilitation – CBR consecutively for 3
years. ATSWA utilizes the support of everyone
especially that of the service organizations
such as Rotary and Lion’s Clubs and other
institutions like the Sankara Nethralaya
Chennai and other NGOs. ATSWA has been
able to secure aids and appliances worth
several lakhs every year for free distribution
to disabled people.
Vocational Skills Training ATSWA has a history of conducting
Vocational training to young people
to help them get equipped with skills
for income generation so they could
become independent and become
contributing members in the family
and in community. In the past ATSWA
has conducted vocational training in
Computer operations and MS office,
Embroidery and tailoring, Retails sales, Home
electronics, Welding, Carpentry, home
Electrical repairs, cycle and two wheeler –
Motorcycle and scooter repairs to name a
17
few through several projects. It has also placed them gainfully after the training.
In Pulicat ATSWA has trained nearly 200 young people in computer operations
and MS Office of the 100 unemployed youth 60 were placed in suitable jobs and
the other 100 consisted of school going children. This can be said of every
vocational training. Strangely Disabled people formed a sizeable number and
this has prompted ATSWA to go into the exclusive domain of vocational training
to specialize it. Previously Vocational Training formed a part of a project or a
programme. But of late a major decision was taken to start vocational training as
an individual department and as a result 4 training centres have been opened
Vocational Training for Disabled people – 4 centres
In its journey to help the disabled
people ATSWA has gone forward in
starting vocational training centres
for people with disabilities in Redhills
at Chennai, Dasukuppam and
Madanambedu in Sathyavedu
Mandal and Chittoor town in
Chittoor district. Efforts have been
taken in this direction to secure
government funding so that more
and more disabled people can be
helped to become financially and
socially independent. Tech
Mahindra donated 15 computers for the Redhills centre to strengthen it and it is
the first corporate company to help ATSWA Trust. It is in this direction the
vocational training centres of ATSWA has been registered with Skill Council for
People with Disabilities – SCPWD which functions under National Skill Development
corporation a body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of the
Government of India. Of the ten organsiations that have been registered with
SCPWD in India ATSWA Trust is the only organization from Tamilnadu to get listed in
the website of SCPWD. The four centres will have
a three courses i.e. 1. Domestic Data Entry
operator, 2. Retail Sales Associate, 3.
Housekeeping room attendant. Each course
will have an intake capacity of 25 candidates
and will go through the course designed by
National Skill development Corporation- NSDC.
The centres will admit young people with
disabilities – orthopedic and hearing impaired
clients to start with. The candidates will receive
certificate from Skill Council for People with disabilities – SCPWD after an
evaluation. The candidate will be provided placement after that. ATSWA Trust
hopes to train and equip at least 3,000 young people with vocational skills for
18
income generation in a year. It hopes to
expand the services to with this
accreditation ATSWA Trust hopes to train
many disabled people in Vocational training
in the time to come.
The new programme has been the new
cooperation with Tech Mahindra in training
disabled young people in three different
vocational skills i.e. (1) Vocational skills in
Computers which includes Basic Computer,
Data Entry and English. (2) Sales associate, (3) Work place training. These trainings
are geared to help disabled young people from Tamilnadu and Andhra. The
trained young people will also be placed after training The trainings are of three
months duration and each batch will have 30 students and 120 students are to
be trained and placed in a year.
Environment Protection and Organic Farming
With ever increasing global warming
and its insidious fall out there is greater
awareness among the general public
in the world about the need to protect
environment in all possible ways. The
slogan think globally and act locally
has caught on and people have
started to do things at their level to
save the earth than by waiting for the
G8 developed nations to cut
emissions to save the environment. IT
has been felt that at least the speed
with which the damage can atleast
be reduced by people taking the first
step in environment protection. The
desire to go back to the ways of our
forefathers who did farming only through
natural methods is now a major
movement due to the harmful effects of
taking chemical fertilizers and pesticides
aided farm produce. Organic farming
has taken a strong hold over the people
due to many advantages that it brings
with it as it enhances the quality without any harmful effects and the super health
that it provides compared with the chemical aided farm produce. ATSWA Trust
19
has joined this movement and is
encouraging people to take to organic
farming as it has many advantages over the
chemical based produce. Going organic
brings more profit and cost less to produce
than the other one. ATSWA through its
awareness programme and active
implementation programmes is helping people
involved in farming to go in for organic farming
using bio fertilizers and bio pesticides. It is also
encouraging people to go in for traditional and
native variety than the modern ones. It hopes
to expand this programme to reach more people to go in not only for organic farming
but also in consuming it.
A new Bio Diversity based ecological farming training programme has been started in
Sathyavedu and Vardhapalayam Mandal to train 200 tribal people in organic farming
methods preparation of Bio Fertilisers and Bio Pesticides. A training programme was
conducted by Mr.Glorydoss project coordinator on 9th March 2017 at Vardhapalayam
village 200 tribal women took part in it.

Conclusion
ATSWA Trust has been able to achieve much for the marginalized and downtrodden
people this year due to the solid support of donors, friends and service agencies. Their
contribution is immense and this can never be forgotten. AT this time ATSWA Trust
gratefully acknowledges the support that we received from Tech Mahindra, Club
Mahindra, Habitat for Humanity in India and National Institute of visually handicapped
for their support and strength.
