ANNUAL REPORT
2016
Empowering individuals with disabilities and their families to lead
fulfilled and productive lives.
Letter from the Board President and CEO
Dear Friends, As we reflect on the changing of the season and another year gone by, we think about the many changes that happened at Harbor House in 2016! One of the greatest in 2016 came when the Kentucky Derby Festival approached Harbor House about making the Ken-Ducky Derby an official KDF event. The 13th Annual Ken-Ducky Derby was held on April 30th as an official KDF event! We sold a record number of ducks and launched 30,000 rubber ducks into the Ohio River. It was the perfect day for ducks and the grand prize winners, Frank and Carolyn Arnold! The winning duck was sold by long-time Harbor House supporter, Leo Thieneman. Along with selling a record number of ducks, we also realized a record number of sponsorships. Carl Swope and the Swope Family of Dealerships provided Harbor House with a 2016 Nissan Versa as the grand prize for the Ken-Ducky Derby. Duck sales have already begun for the 2017 Ken-Ducky Derby, which is being held on Saturday, April 29th. Visit us at various community events and secure your ducks online at www.hhlou.org. Another great opportunity for Harbor House in 2016 was the start of our Transportation Program. Through generous donations from the Federated Program Funds through TARC and The Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels, Harbor House will receive its fourth wheelchair accessible van. This additional van will help us grow our Transportation Program and provide more services for our participants and their families. Our Home Sweet Home program has shown increases in both the number of homes and businesses receiving services and the number of staff employed through Home Sweet Home. We are currently serving 33 homes and businesses and the staff has increased by six. If you or someone you know needs assistance with light housekeeping, please contact us at Harbor House. Little Chores Open Doors. This past year, the Board of Directors of Harbor House worked with the management staff to develop a new strategic plan that will carry Harbor House to 2020. The strategic plan will cover four major areas; Marketing/Recognition, Staff/Board Development, Financial Stability and Expansion. The next three years at Harbor House look exciting as the Board of Directors guide the Harbor House team to fulfill the goals set forth in the new strategic plan. Won’t you consider becoming a part of the excitement by contacting Harbor House to arrange for a tour, to volunteer or to donate? The changing season results in positive changes for our participants at Harbor House, which are all possible with the generosity of sponsors, donors, staff, board members, community partners and volunteers. Your continued support makes it possible for us to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to lead fulfilled and productive lives. THANK YOU from all of us at Harbor House! Sincerely,
John Zoeller

Programs
Adult Day Training (ADT) The ADT services provide person-centered, goal- oriented day services for adults with disabilities. The ADT program provides life
skills activities, such as daily living skills, communication, budgeting, learning to count money, learning to write, learning computer skills, arts & crafts, cooking, gardening, friendship building, learning to get along with others, self-advocacy, health and safety, using community resources, community activities and volunteering.
Community Living Support (CLS) This service is provided through the SCL waiver for participants that do not live in a staffed residence. CLS services are goal-
oriented and person centered. CLS staff work one-on-one with the participant in the community. CLS staff provides the participant with training and/or assistance with skills that they would like to achieve.
Respite Respite is provided for families, giving them a break and time for them individually. Respite is provided at the Bramer Respite House.
Bulk Mail and Fulfillment Services
The Mail Fulfillment Center allows participants to work and earn a paycheck. Mail
work may include, stuffing envelopes, inserting, tabbing, labeling, etc. The onsite employment also provides the participants with work skills that can assist them in obtaining and maintaining community employment.
Supported Employment Employment Coordinators work with the Kentucky Department of
Vocational Rehabilitation to help candidates find jobs in the community based on their skills and interests. Harbor House also provides on-the-job training and educational services to help participants further their skills for the work force.
Home Sweet Home This program is designed to nurture intergenerational relationships by employing and training individuals with
disabilities and others to provide in-home services to individuals and families who are unable to perform the activities, such as, light housekeeping, laundry or grocery shopping.

Sabrina M. Sabrina is a sweet-natured, accommodating person who tries very hard to be liked (and succeeds!) because she gets along well with most everyone.
However, Sabrina has some challenges in her life. She explains: “I was
born with some disabilities. One arm is shorter, and when I was five I had
both of my feet amputated, because they were turned in and it was painful.
I am able to get around with a walker, but sometimes it is difficult to keep
my balance.”
Sabrina’s mother passed away in 2007, and the two of them were very
close. Even though her stepfather and step-grandmother are very involved
in her life, and relate to her like a blood relative, Sabrina still misses her
mother very much, and continues to mourn her loss.
Sabrina also becomes nervous when there are any changes in her life.
When she becomes nervous, she tends to ask a lot of questions.
But Sabrina says she loves coming to Harbor House: “I come to Harbor
House every weekday – to work, to be with people who understand me, and to help people…I remember
when I first started coming, everyone was so nice to me and helped me out when I needed help.”
Sabrina explains: “I love going on field trips with the people at
Harbor House and getting to experience life out in the community.
Probably what I like most about Harbor House is that I get to work
while I am here. It is my favorite thing to do. I like to get things
done and know that I am helping people. And, I love getting the
paycheck at the end of the month.”
Sabrina’s best possible future is one in which there are very few
changes in her life. She has a boyfriend, and wants to spend
more time with him outside of Harbor House, and possibly marry
him! But it will take an extended period of time to achieve these
goals, since changes make Sabrina nervous. But Sabrina now
has a supportive place from which to work toward her life goals.
She says that “Harbor House is a special place for me. They help
me out…they give me a place to work. I love it here.”

Steven W. Steven had been living with his grandmother until she passed
away, then went to live with his aunt. While he had a place to stay,
he was home alone during the day.
A woman at Jefferson County Public Schools recognized this
arrangement didn’t make for a great arrangement for Steven. He
needed to be around people. She knew he wouldn’t be happy
sitting at home alone doing nothing, so she worked making sure he
had a place to go when he graduated.
Her decision to refer Steven has worked out well. Steven has
blossomed at Harbor House. He’s a friendly, outgoing ‘people
person’ who truly enjoys being with others and doesn’t know a
stranger. He is a lovable person whose smile lights up a room,
no matter what’s going on his life. All of Steven’s friends, old
and new, fall in love with his sense of humor and his strong
empathy for others.
Steven says he likes Harbor House “because I have made many new friends. I love doing mail work…I
am very proud of myself every time I get my paycheck.”
Steven likes to listen to music, and when he kicks back in front of the TV, he’s most likely watching
wrestling, because he’s a big fan!
But in 2014, Steven’s life was disrupted by a diagnosis of cancer, and
he moved back in with his aunt. Steven has a close relationship with his
sister and aunt. Steven and his family joined hands and prayed that he
would beat cancer and live a long, productive, and happy life. His many
friends at Harbor House were also pulling for him and hoped that he
would make a full recovery.
During his treatments, Steven looked forward to returning to Harbor
House to be with the staff, and his friends.
And we’re very happy to report that as of August 2015, Steven is in
remission!

Independent Auditors' Report
To the Board of Directors Harbor House of Louisville, Inc. Harbor House Home Sweet Home, Inc. Louisville, Kentucky We have audited the accompanying consolidated financial statements of Harbor House of Louisville, Inc. and Harbor House Home Sweet Home, Inc. (not-for-profit organizations), which comprise the consolidated statements of financial position as of June 30, 2016 and 2015 and the related consolidated statements of activities, functional expenses, and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the consolidated financial statements. Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these consolidated financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors' Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these consolidated financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audits to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the consolidated financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the consolidated financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors' judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the consolidated financial statements, whether due to fraud or error.
In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair presentation of the consolidated financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity's internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the consolidated financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the consolidated financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Harbor House of Louisville, Inc. and Harbor House Home Sweet Home, Inc. as of June 30, 2016 and 2015, and the changes in their net assets and cash flows for the years then ended, in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.
