By Tara Hart, HoCoPoLitSo board co-chair
I was already pleased with my new home of Columbia, this cityof villages, when I attended my first HoCoPoLitSo event in 2004,but the attentive, lively, diverse audience, rapt and reverent dur-ing the reading, full of intelligent questions and good conversa-tion afterwards at the reception, deepened that pleasure into alasting love. Of course HoCoPoLitSo is synonymous with greatwriters, but forty years ago Ellen Conroy Kennedy created thisorganization for us, the readers: the ideal audience for contem-porary literature. Each HoCoPoLitSo event, thoughtfullydesigned along lines of simplicity and open space to allow thewords to flow and shine alchemically among writers and listen-ers, has become an important piece of Howard County’s culturalhistory.
Perhaps you were part of the story this past June, as we cametogether to be “haunted” by KatiaD. Ulysse’s words and songs ofthose whose lives were broken bythe 2010 earthquake in Haiti, tohear Irish poets Paula Meehan andTheo Dorgan and the always inspir-ing music of Narrowbacks, to bedelighted by former National PoetLaureate Billy Collins. Or perhapsyou were part of HoCoPoLitSo’s40th Anniversary Celebration, with
former National Poet Laureate, Rita Dove, reading from her latestcollection, Sonata Mulattica, preceded by a film clip from a doc-umentary with the distinguished presence of violinist JoshuaCoyne, playing original music. Our 2014 Lucille Clifton PoetrySeries event was offered free of charge to the community inremembrance of the first (and free) HoCoPoLitSo poetry eventwith Carolyn Kizer and Lucille Clifton on November 19, 1974.
Ten years ago, in that rapt hall, in my new community, I lookedaround: “Something is filling them, something / That is like thetwilight sound / Of the crickets, immense … .” Will you joinus in the immense pleasures of listening to and learning from theworld’s greatest living writers? For the next forty years, we’ll con-tinue to strive to keep our events as beautifully simple, intellec-tually and spiritually spacious, and accessible as possible. TheHoward County Council recently issued a proclamation in recog-nition of HoCoPoLitSo as a remarkable organization, unique inits contributions to both local and global literary heritage.
The presence and investment of discriminating readers like yousustain and nourish Kennedy’s legacy. Donations to supportHoCoPoLitSo’s live literary programs, student outreach, and editions of The Writing Life are gratefully accepted. Seewww.hocopolitso.org for information about opportunities to purchase the special anniversary anthology, HoCoPoLitSo’sTwenty Years, Twenty Poets, Volume II: 1994-2014, about all of ourunique events and giving opportunities.
