DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), stepping into its 16th year, continues to function as a pioneering dryland research institute striving to address the needs of community through its research agenda. In order to fulfil its avowed mandate to achieve a synergy of science and community in the field of ecology and environment, GUIDE has made added progress.

In order to strengthen its scientific manpower and to enhance its reach, GUIDE has recruited a team of highly qualified and experienced scientists (Dr. K. Karthikeyan, Dr. Arunkumar Roy Mahato and Ms. Munmun Sinha) and researchers (Dr. Pratiksha S. Patel, Sh. Dharsh Worah) with multi-disciplinary background who will work on different aspects of diverse ecosystems, biodiversity and livelihood opportunities in Kachchh and other ecosystems of Gujarat. The pay scale of employees including the project staff has been revised with effect from 1st January 2007. Prof. G. Agoramoorthy, Distinguished Professor, Tajen University, Taiwan showed his willingness to join GUIDE as Director of the Institute and he will be expected to join GUIDE during June 2011. The stewardship and unflinching effort rendered by our Chairman Shri S. G. Mankad, IAS (Retd.) and the Board of Governors of GUIDE is enabling us to function with vigour and quality over the previous years.

Dr. V. Vijay Kumar, IC Director of GUIDE has attended the Steering Committee (SC) meeting of the Global Network of Dryland Research Institutes (GNDRI) at Sede Boquer, Israel on 11th November 2010 as part of founder membership of GUIDE with GNDRI, Israel; and also attended the International conference on “Drylands, Deserts and Desertification (DDD) held between 8 and 11th November 2010 and presented a paper on “Banni Grassland Restoration – A Pilot Approach in Kachchh, Gujarat, India”.

In yet another attempt to acquire global reach and to grab world attention to Kachchh dryland issues, GUIDE played a pivotal role in signing MoU with Tajen University, Taiwan and CASII, India for undertaking joint research and study programmes with universities of Germany and UK. Further research collaborations were initiated through a MoU with Chemistry Department of KSKV Kachchh University, Bhuj; OASTC of Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar and GSFDC, Vadodara. National and State level collaborative research programmes were proposed with Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai; GEER Foundation and S.P. University, Anand on different aspects of ecology. GUIDE has become member in international organizations like International Society of Zoological Sciences (ISZS), Beijing, China and Ocean Expert, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), Bhuj, ever since its establishment in May 1995, has been working steadfastly to address different ecological issues pertaining to arid and semi-arid regions of Gujarat in general and Kachchh in particular. In collaboration with Gujarat State Forest Department, a special symposium was organized on “Banni Grassland” during 4th and 5th March 2011 at Bhuj-Kachchh. The main objective of the symposium is to bring together research and academic institutions, government and non-government organizations, policy makers and various stakeholders dedicated to research, conservation and restoration of Banni grassland with a aim to establish a nationwide network of grassland ecologists and research organizations.

As a follow-up, for better management options for Banni grassland and Prosopis in Kachchh, a proposal on “Formation of Multi Disciplinary Team and Preparation of Sustainable Development Plan for Banni Grassland, Kachchh, Gujarat” was submitted to Government of Gujarat for further action.

As part of its recognition by K.S.K.V. Kachchh University, Bhuj, GUIDE jointly undertaken teaching programme of M. Sc. (Environmental Science) course and the first batch of students passed out during May 2010. A plan is also on the anvil to commence integrated master’s programme with the Kachchh University. Apart from teaching, in the areas of research guidance, GUIDE’s scientists have guided students from Symbiosis Institute, Pune; S.P. University, Anand; North Gujarat University, Patan and K.S.K.V. Kachchh University, Bhuj.

GUIDE scientists and researchers attended many national and international seminars and symposia and presented approximately 30 research papers. Among scientific publications, sixteen research articles, two chapters in books and twenty one project reports were published.

During the current year, from the grant support of Ford Foundation, strength of library is increased by acquiring many books and by subscribing many national and international journals through United States based online system JSTOR, which provides full-text searches of digitized back issues of 379 well-known journals in the field of ecology, environment, botany and agriculture.

The GUIDE laboratory has been recognised as “State Air & State Water Laboratory” by the GPCB, Gandhinagar on 3rd September 2010. The laboratory and infrastructure facilities developed during the previous year have further been strengthened by adding Rs. 25 Lakhs worth of equipments including Spectroflurometer, Ion Chromatography, Laminar Air Flow Chamber, Modeling and Analytical software, etc. from the Ford grant. A team of well-trained analysts are working full time and the laboratory is now poised to undertake a broad range of advanced ecological analyses. These laboratory facilities, besides serving different project requirements also meet analytical requirements of GPCB, industries, farmers and other NGOs. Further, GUIDE has signed a MoU with MPSEZL, Mundra and running another environmental laboratory at MPSEZL.

There have been certain other achievements too and among them significant one being publication initiatives of “State of Environment of Kachchh” (SoEK). SoEK has been concluded and the book will be published in April 2011. Additionally, a book on “Banni- Samrudh Varsa Ni Odakh Ane Jatan” was published in gujarati language and the same was released through the Honorable Chief Minister of Gujarat State on 10th May 2010.

A collaborative research proposal was worked out with S. P. University, Anand and NEERI, Nagpur. Additionally a joint project was undertaken with NIO, Mumbai to study the terrestrial part of Kandla Port. Other new projects include; Environmental monitoring study with ESSAR, Jamnagar, Dholera SIR, EIA-Chandrapur, A Reliance Sponsored Project, Impact of Desertification and Climate Change in Kachchh, Banaskantha and Patan Districts of Gujarat and Studies on the Impact of Salinity Prevention Structures along the coastal belt of Kachchh.

I NFRASTRUCT URE AND FACI LITIE S

C A M P U S

The Institute has spread over four acres of land acquired from Government of Gujarat, where its own complexes comprising well furnished blocks for academics, laboratory, library, administration, conference and meeting halls and hostel for research scholars is located. In addition, residential blocks for scientists have also been constructed within the premises of the institute. There are in total 13 living quarters for the Scientists which make it possible to devote more time to their research activities.

H O S T E L A C C O M M O D A T I O N

The hostel complex has eight rooms of double occupancy and special double occupancy rooms to accommodate important visitors. All the scholars of GUIDE are accommodated in the hostel. Dining and recreational facilities are provided in the hostel, which includes television, table tennis and provision for outdoor games such as volley ball, badminton and cricket.

C O M P U T E R F A C I L I T I E S

Since computers and relevant softwares are essential for quality research, it is constantly endeavored to procure new software and keep the systems at an optimum level. The institute is equipped with ample computer facilities for storage and processing of research data including an ecological data base.

The GIS & RS cell is well equipped with the latest software like Arc GIS and ERDAS for different land use and land cover pattern studies. Besides, ancillary facilities like digitizer, plotter, scanner, etc. are provided for smooth functioning of different activities of the cell.

T E A C H I N G A N D R E S E A R C H

Research activities in different disciplines are in progress since the inception of institute through its multi-disciplinary team of scientists and research scholars. Apart from the routine research, GUIDE has also undertaken initiatives in creating ecological models in grassland restoration, community based mangrove restoration and saline land reclamation. Further, the Institute has been recognized as Research and Education Centre by K. S. K. V. Kachchh University, Bhuj and involved in conducting M.Sc. Environmental Sciences with the university. The institute has modern teaching aids and field research equipments with appropriate accessories to operate in-house and field programmes.

A N A L Y T I C A L L A B O R A T O R Y

The laboratory facility at GUIDE meets all requirements of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of terrestrial and coastal areas. Regular analysis of environmental samples is being carried out for industrial sectors, local agriculturists and NGO’s. The type of analysis includes chemical, biological and microbiological parameters. All types of environmental samples i.e. soil, water (fresh water and sea), waste water, sludge are being carried out. In addition, the analysis of on-site air quality is also done using sophisticated air samplers.

All the analyses in laboratory are carried out using standard methods, with the basic setup and standard kits. In addition to equipments such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, UV-vis Spectrophotometer, Flame-photometer, etc., many advanced instruments have also been added recently such as Respirable Dust Samplers, Stack Monitoring Kit, Fine Particulate Sampler, Spectro-fluorometer and Ion Chromatography. Thus, the laboratory is satisfactorily providing qualitative as well as quantitative analysis to the EIA and other clients and also to run in-house research programs. The lab also has environmental modelling software for accurate impact prediction.

With eminent scientific supervision and skilled technical staff, the laboratory is running as a self sustained unit and is recognised as State Air & State Water Laboratory (First of its kind in Gujarat) by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, GoG, Gandhinagar.

The institute possesses excellent collection of plant and animal specimens (especially marine fauna) of Kachchh in particular and Gujarat in general. The floral specimens collected are properly catalogued with phyto-geographical information.

Extensive collections of intertidal molluscan shells from Kachchh and Jamnagar coastal habitats are preserved and kept as ready reference materials in the marine laboratory which could be used by different school and college students. Similarly, collection of terrestrial animals from Gujarat will be preserved and exhibited in the museum, which will be of use as reference materials. The museum is under development.

L I B R A R Y & D O C U M E N T A T I O N

GUIDE has well stocked library with more than 1600 books of Environmental Studies and Ecology pertaining to Drylands. It has a good collection of over 600 technical reports addressing various environmental issues in the state of Gujarat especially in Kachchh region. The library also suscribes many reputed national and international journals. In addition, library is linked with 370 international journals through JSTOR. This library is major source of literature for scholars working in Kachchh and Gujarat region.

GIS & REMOTE SENSING CELL

GIS & RS facilitates research activities related to biodiversity, land use, soil, and geo-hydrological regime, Natural Resource Mapping (NRM) and Participatory Resource Mapping (PRM). The cell is well equipped with GIS based software Arc GIS 9.3.1, Cartalinx, and Image processing software ERDAS Imagine 9.3. We are also focusing on Open Source GIS software like QGIS, GRASS, MapWindow and Multispec. The cell also has database of LANDSAT and IRS Satellite imageries. The cell has mapped various thematic layers of landscape features of Gujarat in general and Kachchh in particular.

The project attempts ecological assessment of grassland biodiversity and development of degraded grassland of Banni Region of Kachchh District. The project was sanctioned in May 2007 (Ref. Let.: No. PRC-102006-SFS-2-G dated on 07/05/’07-PCCF Office, Gandhinagar) by the Gujarat Department of Forest and Environment (GDFE), GoG, Gandhinagar; however, the project activities commenced from April 2008 after the receipt of the first installment. For smooth execution of this project, a District Level Committee (DLC) was constituted by the GoG under the Chairmanship of District Collector, Kachchh. A detailed guideline for execution of the project was framed and approved by the DLC.

As a part of Research and monitoring, data was collected in seasonal manner (winter, summer, and monsoon). A base map of Banni was prepared with the help of topo maps, cadastral maps and the satellite imagery of pre monsoon 2008 under the GIS platform. The land use pattern was classified into five major types; Prosopis dominant area, Suaeda scrub (Including barren land), Prosopis with other vegetation, Grassland with sparse Prosopis and Water bodies. Predominant area in Banni is Suaeda scrub including barren land (753.25 km2) followed by Prosopis dominant area (720.73 km2) and Prosopis with other vegetation (554.52 km2).

As part of the restoration of Banni grassland, currently five NGOs are working at seven villages in Banni, covering an area of 705ha. The development activities are in progress which will cover the targeted area of 4,000ha by August 2012. In addition, micro-planning of 44 villages was also submitted to DSFD and GDFE, Gandhinagar.

2. DWDU – Grassland Development Project, Kachchh District

The programme was sponsored by District Watershed Development Unit (DWDU), GoG, Bhuj- Kachchh. The grassland development programme of the project targeted 466ha in 129 villages and horticulture programme targeted 16.5ha in 11 villages of Kachchh district. During the project tenure GUIDE has developed grass plots in a total area of 458ha and 1ha land was developed under horticulture programme. The works undertaken for the grassland development included; trench fencing, removal of weeds, ploughing and seeding of the area. The completion report of the work as per the DWDU format was submitted to DWDU, Bhuj- Kachchh for the above mentioned grass plots. The developed grassplots and horticulture plot were handed over to the respective village panchayats as per the terms of DWDU, Bhuj-Kachchh. The management of the grass plot will be the responsibility of the concerned village panchayats.

The Government of Gujarat has taken initiatives towards combating climate change through launching separate department for Climate change. As a follow-up, GoG has sanctioned a project to GUIDE through Gujarat Ecology Commission to improve the understanding and knowledge on impact of climate change and desertification in the arid districts (Kachchh, Banaskantha and Patan) of Gujarat.

This project was initiated in February 2010 with the following objectives, which have been derived as an outcome of the consultative meetings with various stake holders conducted by Gujarat Ecology Commission, Gandhinagar.

To assess the status of Environmental Quality and its Degradation

To find out the factors influencing desertification and its magnitude

To find out the correlation between desertification and climatic factors

To predict the future desertification scenario through possible simulation models

To prepare stakeholders driven management plan to combat desertification and adaptation to climate change

This project was proposed to assess environmental quality and degradation picture based on the index of vegetation cover / land use/ land cover, ground water depletion and quality, soil erosion, climate / drought, mining / industries, socio economics and livestock. The primary and secondary data collections from various departments and first level of data analysis are in progress.

4. Status of Flora and Fauna in Three Limestone Mine Lease Areas of Reliance Cementation Pvt, Ltd, Maharashtra.

Reliance Cementation Pvt. Ltd. intents to setup cement plant of about 5.0 million tons per annum capacity near Mukutban in Yavatmal District of Maharashtra. This firm has identified three mine lease areas; Mukutban lease (572ha) in Yavatmal district and Persoda (765ha) and Chopan (247ha) in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. Under EIA process, the agency has allotted the task of assessing the biodiversity in and around the proposed mine lease areas to GUIDE. This project activity has commenced in January 2010.

The study area was delineated into two zones; the core zone and buffer zone i.e. proposed mine lease area and buffer zone i.e. the area covering 10 km radius from the core zone. Field data collection on floral (Tree, Shrub, Climber, Herb and Grass) and major faunal (Amphibian, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals) components are in progress.

5. Identify Problem Areas and Provide Eco-Management Strategies for the Proposed Thermal Power Plant and Port projects of SP-EGPL, Kodinar, Junagadh District, Gujarat

Shapoorji Pallonji Energy Private Limited (SP-EGPL) Group is planning to set up a Coal based super Critical Thermal Power plant at village Kaj and Green Field Port project at village Chhara, Taluka Kodinar, District Junagadh, Gujarat. In order to carry out ecological studies within the influence areas of the proposed project sites, SP-EGPL requested Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology to carry out the study. The area considered for this ecological study include an extant of 15 km long and 10 km width keeping a strategic center point between the proposed Port and Thermal Power plant located between Chhara and Kaj villages of Kodinar Taluka. The project approach involved collection and compilation of secondary information pertaining to the sensitive ecosystems and validate the same through rapid survey and formal discussion with the concerned stakeholders. Status of wetlands, sea turtle nesting beaches, shoring of whale shark and straying lions were discussed and eco-management plan and monitoring strategies for their long term conservation were provided.

In view of the recent industrial advances in western Kachchh due to mineral deposites like limestone, lignite, gypsum, bentonite and bauxite, the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), Bhuj has initiated a project on, ‘Regional Environmental Assessment’ in the Western part of Kachchh that covers about 5000 km2 of drylands in the Lakhpat, Abdassa and Nakhatrana talukas (or sub-districts) of Kachchh district. The major components studied under this project were Physical, Biological and Social environment of the region and delineate zones for sustainable development in the region; Strategic guidelines for maintaining ecosystem health and framework for long term ecological research and monitoring, conservation of native biodiversity; impact of recent industrial advances on the socio-economic development of the region, zonation for the biodiversity conservation, mineral exploration & industrialization, and agriculture & animal husbandry activities; zone-wise resource management strategies for the sustainable development of the western Kachchh region.

7. Biodiversity Survey of the Selected River Crossing and Water bodies along

In order to monitor the impact on biodiversity due to laying of pipeline at the river and water

body crossings, a baseline study is proposed to identify and record the pre project ecological

status. The study will also serve as a guideline during the restoration process after the

completion of pipeline project. The project is in the initial stage and a reconnaissance survey

was carried out to understand the physical and biological attributes of the pipeline route of the

proposed project for further detailed study.

1. Baseline Monitoring Study for Biological Characteristics in Kharo Creek, Kachchh, Gujarat

North-western coast of Kachchh bordering Abdasa and Lakhpat talukas is the hub of coastal industrial activities. Incidentally, this coastal belt harbours some of the best coastal biodiversity hotspots like mangroves. Sanghi Cements Ltd., located in Abadasa taluka has it s own jetty in Kharo creek. As per the directives of Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Sanghi Cements Ltd., has instituted a seasonal marine monitoring study in Kharo creek in and around its Jetty which is being carried out by GUIDE. This study monitors Kharo creek environment by investigating important biotopes like mangroves, benthic and pelagic habitats. The parameters being looked into include plankton, intertidal and subtidal fauna, water quality and sediment quality. This study will help the authorities to keep a vigil on the ecosystem health and take remedial measures in the event of any impact.

This study was undertaken at Mundra Port Special Economic Zone Ltd. (MPSEZL) for

periodically monitoring the near coastal marine environs in a radius of around 10 km with

west port site as the central point. This ongoing study has the overall objective of gathering

baseline information on four important biotopes in MPSEZL West Port vicinity namely

subtidal, plankton, surface water and sediment in order to characterize the near coastal

marine environment of the port. This will help the MPSEZL authorities to establish a baseline

data and to monitor qualitative and quantitative changes, if any, that may arise over a period

of time and to conceive and implement remedial measures.

Kandla port, as part of its expansion drive is setting up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) within its port area. This SEZ will have industries like ship repairing and breaking facilities, ship yards and ship bunkering. The comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment Study (EIA) for this development was given to National Institute of Oceanography, Mumbai. NIO, in turn has asked GUIDE to carry out the terrestrial part of the EIA including mangroves and mudflats. This study envisages comprehensive baseline information gathering on water, soil, air, noise, mangroves and socio-economics in the surrounding project environ. The study will also predict the possible impact arising out of this development and come out with an appropriate management plan to ward-off the impact.

Southern shore of Gulf of Kachchh is witnessing aggressive industrial development like jetties, oil refineries, fertilizer plants and cement production. These industries are mandated to carry out regular marine monitoring studies in view of the presence of ecologically sensitive Marine National Park and Sanctuary (MNP & S) in their vicinity. Vadinar Oil Terminal Ltd., (VOTL), a conglomerate of ESSAR Group of industries has its captive Jetty at the coastal belt of Vadinar which handles crude oil for its refinery. The seawater intake and outlet point of the ESSAR refinery is also located in the same area. As per VOTL assignment, GUIDE is carrying out regular monthly marine monitoring study encompassing water quality (15 parameters), sediment quality (3 parameters) and marine biology (13 parameters). This study apprises the VOTL authorities of the status of marine environment in order to enable them to take required management measures and render their activity environmentally benign.

Salinity ingression in coastal zone is a major problem in Gujarat. Almost all coastal districts are facing this menace. Salinization of groundwater, scarcity for potable water and reduced agricultural productivity are some of the serious repercussions of salinity ingression. The Salinity Control Division-Bhuj, Kachchh has constructed forty-five bandharas spanning over the 7 coastal talukas of Kachchh to check salinity ingression into the coastal zone. In order to assess the impact of these civil structures, Irrigation Circle initiated a study through GUIDE. In this study, effect of constructed bandharas in terms of water and soil quality, agriculture, land use and land cover change and socio-economics of the communities residing nearby have been investigated. A discernable impact in all these quarters could be seen. A detailed management plan in order to enhance the performance of bandharas and involvement of local stakeholders and beneficiaries of bandharas are also discussed.

SY MPOSIUM ON BANNI G RASSLAND

A Symposium on ‘Banni grassland’ was organized on 4th and 5th March, 2011 with an objective to bring together research and academic institutions, government and non-government organizations, policy makers and various stakeholders dedicated to research, conservation and restoration of Banni grassland.

Representatives from various organizations like Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI), Arid Forest Research Institute (AFRI), Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), Gujarat Ecological Society (GES), Gujarat Environmental Education Research (GEER) Foundation, Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), Sardar Dantiwada Agricultural University, KSKV Kachchh University, M. S. University, Baroda, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad; officials from various government departments like Gujarat State Forest Department (GSFD), Gujarat State Forest Development Corporation (GSFDC), Animal Husbandry and NGOs like Sahjeevan, Khamir Craft Resource Centre and Shrujan presented papers under four major themes:

1) Introduction to Banni Grassland and Its Biodiversity 2) Issues & Interaction with Maldharis of Banni 3) Economical Aspects 4) Conservation, Restoration and Management

The Working plan of Banni was presented by CCF, Kachchh Circle. The presentations and follow-up discussions have brought out the current state of degradation of Banni grassland due to climatic and man induced factors like spread of soil salinity and invasion of Prosopis juliflora. The scientists and other participants have discussed on remedial measures to improve the grassland productivity, animal husbandry, enhancement of socio-economics through handicrafts, ecotourism, dairying, etc

It was published by Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE) and Gujarat State Forest Department, Kachchh Circle, Bhuj – Kachchh with the support of Gujarat Forest and Environment Department and edited by Charkha (Mr. Sanjay Dave and Ms. Utkantha Dholakia), Ahmedabad. The book is divided into six sections along with statistics and photo gallery describing various aspects of Banni such as Geographical position, Biodiversity, Social aspects, Cultural heritage, Status of basic amenities, Animal husbandry related issues and traditional knowledge.

2) State of Environment of Kachchh (SoEK) is a

comprehensive report on the present status of Kachchh environment. This book, being published by Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology , Bhuj in collaboration with Gujarat Ecological Education and Research Foundation, Gandhinagar as a part of Gujarat Swarnim Jayanti celebrations, is an attempt to underline the need and urgency to manage our natural resources and environment in a more sensible and sustainable manner.
