HEREFORDSHIREOIlNITHoI.ClCICAL CLUB RULES

1. NAME. The Club shall be called the Herefordshire OrnithologicalClub.

2. OBJECTS. The objects of the Club shall be (a) to further the studyof birds in the field, and (b) to assist in their preservation.

~. MEMBERSHIP. The Club shall consist of a President, a Chairman,• Secretary, a Field Secretary, a Treasurer. an Editor and Ten Com­mittee Members and Ordinary Members. The P'resident and theChairman to retire after serving a term of three years. The Secretaries,the Treasurer and the Editor shall be elected annually. The threesenior of the ten Ordinary Members of the Committee shall retireannuaUy and they shall not be eligible for re_election for a period oftwelve months. The Officers and Ordinary Members of the Com­mittee shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting and the Officersshall be eligible for re-election. Nominations for the Committee mustbe received in writing by the Hon. Secretary by March 31 st.

4. CONDITIONS OF MEMBERSHIP. Members shall be required to supportand keep the provisions of the protection of Birds Act, 1954. Anymembers failing to support and keep this law shall be required toresign. Members may not divulge to unauthorised persons (e.g. knownc~lectors of skins and/or eggs) information in a manner likely to bedetrimental to the objects of the Club.

5. SUSBCRIPTIONS. (a) Ordinary Members: 18 years of age or OVE!f"

75 pence, payable on January 1st or on election to membership. Anyadditional members of a household after the first, 50 pence; suchmembers receiving all privileges of full membership. Junior Members(under 18 but over 12 years of age), 37t pence per annum, payableas above.Corporate Members: Kindred bodies, Schools, etc.: Subscription onepound and 5 pence per annum.Honorary Members: As approved by the majority present at the AnnualGeneral Meeting.(b) All subscriptions, subsequent to those paid on admission, shall b.due on January 1st each year. Where a member has been e.lected onor after 1st September in any year, there will be no further liability tosubscribe in the year immediately following that of his or her electlon.Any Member whose subscription is six months in arrears shall cease toreceive the Club's publications and, should the subscription not be paidby December 31 st, his or her name shall be deleted from the list ofMembers.

6. MANAGEMENT. The Secretary shall keep Minut4S of the meetingsand prepare such literature as shall keep Members informed of theClub's activities.

7. MEETINGS shall be held as often as deemed desirable at the discretionof the Officers.

8. REPORT. There shall be an Editoria,1 Committee of at least three Mem­bers including the Secretary, appointed at an ordinary Committee Meet­Ing. These shall prepare and present an Annual Report and such specialreports as may be decided upon.

9. ALTERATION OF RULES. An alteration of the Rules may be madeonly if proposed at one meeting, prlnted.on the agenda for the followl".meeting, and passed by a two-thirds majority of those present.

EDITORIAL NOTE

An interminable, though not positively lethal, winter; an un-genialapring; a dry and warm summer; an autumn that prolonged summer;-and' a cold and hard ending. That was 1970. It was also BuropoatlConservation Year, and, though only a beginning, has achieved some­thing towards general consciousness of the threats to our environmentand an app~ation of aB that giV~8 interest, variety, <:Xhilaration andjoy-which includes our bird$.

They h~ve a hard struggle. "Probablypois6Iis, though still a men­ace, are no longer the biggest drain on the bird population. Economicfa.t'ining, invol\ting destruction of cover, is the biggest; and for manycommon species the everlasting toU 'tiiken by man's speed on the roadmay perhaps be next. Nevertheless the record and the outlook alikeare not so bad. These counties have suffered less than some from lossof hedge, timber and vegetation, and the evidence is that the breedingseasoh was a good one.

On the debit side the birds which depend on old tim~r are dwindl­ing-Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Woodpeckers and possibly Tawny Owll.On the credit side Redstarts and Whitethroats, casualties in 1969, haveshown a come-back; the Sparrow Hawk, in extremis a few years ago,has recovered markedly; Heronries have swelled a little; Quail havealmost 'exploded', and game-birds have done weU, even Black-gamepossibly showing an increase; the Kingfisher has flourished; moreBewick's swans accept Wye Winter hospitality; and more Gretn Sand­piperssQjoum with us.

As to rarities. if a First or Second Record be a "scalp" we havenotched several-Pectoral Sandpiper and Bar-headed Goose are Firstfor both Counties, Sanderling a First for Hereford. and Ruff a Firstfor Radnor; and Spotted Redshank a Third for Radnorshire. Ofother scarcer or more interesting birds there are records of Bittem,Comcrake, Com Bunting, Black Grouse, GadwaB, Hobby, Kite, GreatGrey Shrike, White Wagtail, Nightjar. Hawfinch. and possibly Wood­lark (an almost lost species).

Interest lies as much in the personality and behaviour of thecommoner as in acquaintance with the aristocrat, and all Members areinvited to send in any observations of unusual incident, even amongour common species, for such adds alike to the knowledge and theenjoyment of fellow Members.

Brecon; Haugh Wood (four times); Whitney-on­Wye; Penybont; HoUyhush, Ledbury; Shobdon; Waun Marteg; Hind­well Pool (twice); Abbeycwmhir; Rode Tropical Bird Garden, Bath;Belvide Reservoir, Staffs.; Cherry Hill Nature Reserve; and Letton.

THE NEST·BOX SCHEMEIn 1970 our Nest-Box scheme comprised 1,076 boxes, divided into

42 groups of varying size scattered among our woodlands. Between40 and 50 ornithologists were needed to service these groups of boxesand to keep a check on their occupants. We are very grateful to allthese ladies and gentlemen for their generous expenditure of time andtrouble in this most worth-while activity.

550 boxes were occupied, and just over 4,000 eggs were laid, ofwhich 3,175 reached maturity and fledged successfully, a ratio ofalmost 80%.

The Pied Flycatcher had a disappointing year, nests numberingonly 104 (145 last year). Something seemed to have gone amiss withits spring migration. At L1ancillo, for example, three cocks anivedand adopted boxes, but no hen-birds came to join them. The easternsites, Ledbury and Brockhampton, failed to repeat last year's success,but a nest at Mathon was a most gratifying first record.

The various Tit species nested in normal numbers, and Redstarts,with treble the 1969 number of nests, almost regained normal numbersafter their last year's catastrophe.

Eight boxes were occupied by Dormice and one by bumble-bees!Ringing of fledgelings and some adults was again carried out by

B.T.O; ATLAS SCHEME-lbird SeasonWith three sea~Qn's work on the B.T.O. Atlas completed, it is

evident that in obta.Uiing ,positive coDfi.rmation of breeding certainspecies are proving rather elusive-;-Spa~rowHawk, Water Rail, Wood­cock and Grasshopper Warbler are good examples. There is also theproblem of the bird Which, although present at the right season, neverDlay have attempted to' b~ed, yet the possibility cannot be fully dis­counted. The CrossbiU recorded in 5036 typifies the latter question;shoulc:bthe species 'turn up again during the next two years can some­one produce' good evidence of breeding?

The following !\ummary shows the approximate position at theend of .the 1970 seasOn. A few records have still to be added. Birdsin the selected list have all been noted in the squares indicated at theright se;lSOn, and it is requested that special attention be given to thosespecies by in~resteaClub Members during the final two years of theSurvey. My grateful thanks a~ due to all those who have helped tobring the third year of thjs exercise to a satisfactory conclusion.

"Ithu IObg been thought that the 'area Of laM between the riversLugg and Arrow, to the' south Mwhich the Pibsley brook flows, andwhich includes a war-time airfield and covers some third of the parishof Shobdon, bas a speCial attraction to the species. It is a mini-plainand' was in pie-historic' times a large lake. Could the soil, the Pres­ance of some minerals, plants or insects cause Quail to soujoum, or thefact that to the north and west the hills serve as a barrier? One canohlyguess.

This land was, until the el.ulf 1920's, owned by ,the Bateman familyof Shobdon Court, who were great preservers of aame. The late Mr. Bolt had a clutch of 10 Quail's eggs in his collectionlabelled "Taken at Shobdon by T. Norris 1912".

A Member of this Club was present as a lad when a shooting partyshot one at the R~d, nearrr~tei~e,;in 19iO.

In the .l~te summer of 1939 I saw my tirst Quail on barley stubblein th~ pari~h., I was not then farililiar with the ~II. 1949 saw ItalianP.O.W.'s \forking on farms adjoining the airfield, and they were quickto recognise the call. It reminded them of home and caijsed muchheart-burning.

During these years the airfield was constantly active day and night,and quail were heard calling from the adjacent fields; they did notseem UQduly distur\led by thf> noise., During 1950 this CluQ was foun­ded, and an annual report ,for 1951 was published, which containssubsequent notes on Quail. In 1952 I heard my first Quail calling, andthe following year a bird returned to the same field. Breeding Was alsoproved at Staunton-on-Arrow, just west of Shobdon.

The following years saw the llumbers increasing annually, till apeak was reached in 1961, when on a calm summer evening, on a walkround tqe airfield (now nearly all <planted with grain) I heard eightindpadual males calling. The increase in numbers resulted in aspfl=aq; the presumably unpaired cocks appeared to Qlove from field tofi~ld daily.. Birds were reporteq,heard and seen at Hindwell, 10 milesnorth-west. When the corn was harvested birds were Qbserved leadingyoung out of the crop; a nest was found from which young hadhatched; one flew up through the sails of a combine; onewa$ found ina bale of str~w; and one was caught by h~nd. . .

1962 was a cold summer, and numbers were considerably down,1?ut built up again by 1964. Then in 1965 the Air Ministry sold theland on the airfield, which resulted in a new occupier witba differentfarming policy, and in the following years it .was difficulLto find anybirds. The decline was on a national scale, so that one cannot whollyblame the farmer concerned.

Lamenting over the probability of the species being excluded fromthe Atlas survey list, at least inFJ;erefordslJ.ire, it ~ave me much pleas­ure, when I investigated a reported Corncra'Ke, to find it turned out tobe. fl Quail. The following evening I heard. two calIihg on the airfield.They were back,. anti later bred. Theitpresence enabled many Clubmembers to hear the call, which was a new experience for them.

They now appear wide-spread over the County, and I have a feel"ing that their presence coincides with a good· Partridge year. Let ushope that both species remain with us for generations to come.

ANECDOTE AND ODDITY

1. Hovering. Can only the Kestrel really hover? The Buzzard doesso clumsily. On Nov. 10th, near Bridge Sollars, TRHO watcheda Barn Owl, in the car lights, hovering exactly like a Kestrel forhalf a minute over the edge of a field. On Sept. 10th at LlancilIoTRHO also watched a Heron virtually motionless in the air; therewas a brisk south wind; the bird faced it, gave one flap per sixseconds over about half a minute, and remained stationary­making a rather uncanny sight. On Oct. 18th, in viewing theirKite, up the Elan Valley, the FSB's watched him bearing up into aheavy head-wind without ever a wing-beat.

2. MALLARD. At Nantmel two albino ducklings were seen on theDulas, on and after June 15th (DJLS).

3. Buzzard and Sparrqw llawk. -'{hat ,the Bqzzard (and lOOSt preda­tors) pays his way is borne out by observation. On April 11th, onRadnor F.oTeSt, ROBGwatched two Buzr.ards actually on aCarrionCrow'snest and being dive-bombed by the parents.TRHO records a neighbour seeing a Buzzard twice visit a Crow'snest and remove young, and at Lulham, in March, ",atched aJJuzzard stoop ott a group of Jackdaws-~esultuncertain. AtLlandrindod Mr. T. E. Tylh observed a Buzzard. carrying offwhat was almost certainly araf: 'Preying upon pigeon and rabbitis l:\coml11onplace, and on Nov. UltJt, at ShobdQIl,TRJ\watcheda Sp;urow Hlj.wk chase and catch a Woodpigeon.

4. Grouse.' June 25th: at Nantrriel, blLS came on two families of 5a,nd 7 young; jUldin I?oth caSl;s the;mother flew off while the cockperformed~ broken~wing tri;ck.

5. Moorhen. On June 13th at Penybont CW, when walking to-'. wards the backwater behind the.weir, heard distress calls; and on

arrival found that they were caused by two M~rhens which werebeing chased by a stoat. The stoat waS sWimming -after b'ne ofthe pair. When it came close to them the birds made a tremen­dous noise, and eventually one disappeared and the other climbeda tree overhanging the water. The stoat then crept about in thelong grass and swam in the water near the treed Moorhen. Thena small chick swam oat oldie reeds towal'ds the parent. After afew more skirmishes between parent and stoat, all went q~iet.

6. Rook. The one local rookery near Bridge Soll~rswas felled in" ~utumn 1969., In the absence of big timber, the birds crpssed the

river to a" small hanging wood of young ash arid esu\bli~d 40nests, the lowest among which was no more than 17 feet aboveground (TIUiO).

7. Lapwing. In May, at Brilley, WLS reeqrds three. nests beingcarefully ploughed round and left safe by 'the local owner. Agri·culturists ple4SC cc;>py.

8. Wren. At Brilley again" WLS reports a pair talQag over an oldSwallow's nest, on barn rafters, and covering it with a moss top.

91. BUZZARD. Records are widespread and too numerous to givein detail. Though no big gatherings are recorded, singles, pairsand trios are reported, in Herefordshire, from Kingstone, CherryHill, Backberry, Great Doward, Kington, Lulham, Flintsham,Staunton-on-Arrow, Welsh Newton, Wormbridge, Whitchurch,Collington, Longtown, Garnons, Kingswood, Llancillo, Here­ford, Bosbury and Bircher. Successful breeding is certified fromLulham, Longtown, LlanciIIo and Chaff Wood.

For Radnorshire, records come from Craig-yr-allt-Goch (9birds), Llandrindod Hall (nesting), Radnor Forest, Nantmel (5birds, and nesting), Penybont (with successful nesting), ElanValley (12 birds), Abbeycwmhir, Claerwen dam (6 birds) andHindwell.

93. SPARROW HAWK. Sightings are (happily) too numerous togive in detail. There are at least 50 records, including 4 birdsand 3 birds together, and they come from all parts of the area.Four young were raised in a Shobdon wood and three at Wig­more. Several birds were seen either holding or attacking prey.One was observed catching a cock Blackbird and another chas­ing and taking a Woodpigeon.

95. KrrE. Records are more numerous than previously. H. Marchfirst week, LlanciIIo, one was watched for an hour round theHall (RPA); Oct. 24th, Yazor, one was watched in flight nearthe main road, the tail and red plumage being prominent (RLT).

100. HEN HARRIER. H. Oct. 30th, Aulden-Birley area, a brown­ish Harrier with dark primaries was glimpsed. A few days pre­viously a dead and decomposed bird was found and examinedby Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Archer, but they could not identify itspecifically. A local farmer has sighted Harrier here at thistime of year for the last 3 years.

R. March 22nd, Clawdd-ddu-Bach, a Harrier, brown withlong barred tail, white rump-patch and long naJ;TOW wings, waswatched hunting over a tract of moorland (ROBG).

103. OSPREY.. H. Aug. 11th, Aymestrey, a very large raptor, withlonger and more pointed wings than those of a Buzzard, blackabove and white underneath, passed over northwards (FWM),in every probability an Osprey.

104. HOBBY. H. June 20th~ Ooodrich, one over the Wye spent Sminutes making passes at Swifts and Martins (PJW); 23rd. Mor­diford, one in area (AJS); July 19th, Kingstone, one was watchedfor 5 minutes, flying among Swifts and Swallows, and occasion­ally mobbed by Swallows (PJW); Aug. 9th, Shelwick, a bird wasclearly seen, flying low across the old canal (SB and ARM).

R. Sept. 6th, Llandrindod Hall farm, a Hobby flew over verylow, pursued by a small bird. It is believed to have frequentedthe golf-course for weeks (TJJ).
