2.1 Objectives

INESC-ID aims to produce added value to people and society in the field of Information and Communication Technologies, Electronic Engineering and Energy. The mission of INESC-ID is to develop tomorrow’s technologies by excelling in research, today.

The main objectives of INESC-ID are: to integrate competences from researchers in elec-trical engineering and computer science to advance the state of the art in computers, telecommunications, and information systems; to support the first stages of the value generation chain: basic research, applied research, and advanced education; in cooper-ation with other institutions, to perform technology transfer, to support the creation of technology based startups, and to provide technical support.

Tangible results of the activity of the institution are: publications in national and inter-national journals and conferences; methodologies, tools, patents, and prototypes to be transferred to the academic, scientific or industrial sectors, advanced professional edu-cation and training.

In order to fulfill its mission, INESC-ID values interna-tionalization, networking, partnership and visibility.

R&D activities cover a broad (although focused) range of research areas and application markets, such as wireless communications, electronic equipment, health care, medical imaging, industrial automation, e-learning, and enterprise information systems. INESC-ID also acts as a service provider, to stimulate cooperation with industry, to focus re-search on practical issues, and to make the economic market aware of its capabilities. Close ties with professionals qualified by INESC-ID are encouraged, not only for lifelong education support, but also for networking activities.

The scientific activities of INESC-ID are financed by a number of funding agencies, of which the most important are FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, ANI – Agência Nacional de Inovação, and the European Comission. Additionally, INESC-ID also partici-pates in other funding programs involving government funding with the purpose of devel-oping R&D in companies through consortiums with research partner institutions.

2.2 Main achievements

In the last year, the institution has worked hard to fulfill its mission. Our research is now quite visible at an international level, and its quality is recognized.

Among the most significant achievements, we would like to highlight the following activ-ities:

R INESC-ID has been involved, at an institutional level, in the establishment and devel-opment of the training activities developed in the context of the Portugal-CMU and the Portugal-MIT programs;

R The exceptional quality of the publications of INESC-ID researchers has been recog-nized in 2015 with several awards, in national and international conferences;

R The organization of the conferences such as ISCAS2015, DCIS2015, IT4Energy, 2nd DataStorm, LxMLS2015 required the effort of several research teams;

R The success of the seven INESC-ID startups: Coreworks, SiliconGate, PETSys, Voiceinteraction, NetworkConcept, HeartGenetics and Magnomics;

R The scientific productivity results in about 130 international journals papers, and more than 244 communications in international conferences;

R About 33 PhD theses were finished in 2015;

R From a total of 16 research projects that started in 2015, 7 have received European funds, 6 are supported by national funding and 3 were bilateral contracts. In 2015 there were a total of 69 research projects ongoing (8 European, 1 managed by Agência de Inovação, 1 managed by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, 42 funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, and 17 bilateral contracts.

Page 17: ANNUAL REPORT - INESC-ID

15

Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa

We have put some effort in order to promote technology transfer through the partici-pation of the mentioned startups, but also to support the invention registration and the increase of industry research contracts.

In 2015 it was also approved the new intellectual property institutional regulation, up-dated accordingly with the national legislation, in order to keep up with the increasing technology transfer of the institution.

We put considerable effort in such activities because we aknowledge the importance of the funding diversity to motivate researchers and put forward their results expecta-tions. Besides the competitive national and international funding, we expect to create our own revenues to add value for what we do the best: develop tomorrow’s technolo-gies by excelling in research, today.

8.1 ReThink

The Internet has allowed the development of new ser-vices at an accelerated rythm. Many of these services have been standardized and are now fundamental piec-es of the Internet. However, the standardization of pro-tocols is a complex and time-consuming process, which means that much of the innovation is not so well used due to the lack of interoperability, particularly between appli-cations with the same functionalities.

Other times, standardization is not in the interest of the creators of the applications or services, who prefer the Walled Garden model where services are provided to those used (often for free) without connection to other similar services. For example, in the field of audio/video conferencing we have applications such as Skype, Hangouts, Facebook, Messenger, etc., each independent of the others, forcing the user to register and manage an identity with each service provider. This creates a barrier to competition by making entry of new participants costly, since they also make all components available or risk becoming dependent on competition: e.g. when using Google or Facebook authentication. Also for the user it is an extra effort to change.

On the other hand, telecommunications operators are now surveyed in second place, especially in fragmented markets such as Europe where their small scale does not allow them to compete with Over the Top (OTT) service providers such as Google or Facebook. However, telecommunications operators are able to contribute with unique services such as identification of users (who sign contracts), interconnection with other non-IP net-works or Quality of Service (QoS).

The reThink project has as main objective the definition, validation and disclosure of a new architecture for the Internet that allows, among others, audio and video communica-tion between clients of different operators in a secure and authenticated way. This archi-tecture will allow the development of applications for the Internet of the future (browser, mobile devices and sensors), which will have the capability of adapting intrinsically and constantly update to new technologies and applications. This evolutionary capacity de-rive from the fact that adaptability is made at the level of protocols, which can evolve freely only having to respect APIs, by dynamically loading their implementations. This technology will allow, for example, that new chat applications can access other chat ser-vices already established. This service integration model will be a stimulus for the devel-opment of new applications.

The necessary components will also be provided for the development of complex com-munication applications in a competitive market model, e.g. a distributed and universal authentication and identification system, a message forwarding overlay system or a global directory for presence registration. These facilities will be available to both large application vendors and small vendors trying to enter the market.

This project relies heavily on WebRTC Peer-to-Peer technology, having strong QoS com-ponents, network management and security.

The reThink project started in January 2015, and is ongoing until June 2017, with a total budget of around € 4.7M. This project involves 10 european part-ners, including telecommunication operators (Orange, Deutsche Telekom and PT Inovação e Sistemas), industry associations (EURESCOM), academ-ic institutions (INESC-ID, Fraunhofer, Institut Mines-Telecom and Technische Universitat Berlin) and private compa-nies (Apizee and Quobis Networks).

The INESC-ID team is composed of members from three research INESC-ID groups: the Communication Networks and Mobility (Ricardo Lopes Pereira), Signal Processing Systems (Ricardo Chaves) and Distributed Systems (Nuno Santos) groups.

8.2 RAGE

RAGE is a project co-funded by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020. The project started on February, 2015 and will last for 48 months. The goal of this project is to research and develop self-contained gaming as-sets to support game studios at developing applied games in an easier, faster and more cost-effective manner. These assets and a large volume of high-quality knowledge re-sources will be available through the RAGE ecosystem, which is an online social space that connects research, gaming industries, intermediaries, education providers, policy makers and end-users.

Benefits Currently, game-based learning analytics, game-based assessment, as well as strategic AI and social agency for applied games are complex and costly and require local solutions. This creates severe barriers for seizing the wide-ly recognized market potential of applied games. The RAGE project removes these barriers for the companies involved in the project as well as for the wider community of game indus-tries and intermediaries. Furthermore, the assets developed in RAGE will have a clear pedagogical guidance, focusing on technology components that are highly relevant for learning and skills acquisition.

Making available an open repository offering advanced gaming technologies is a power-ful but insufficient approach to breaking through the fragmentation of the applied gam-ing sector. The main reason is due to the fact that the assets themselves are static arte-facts that are useless without the social processes that pull them into action. As such, the RAGE project will put a strong effort in the social dimension of its online repository, transforming it into an ecosystem that fosters inter-industry collaboration.

Expected Results The expected results of the project include:

• A repository of advanced gaming assets that is open-source and will enable more ef-ficient and proper development of features required by serious games that include, among other things, user analysis, emotion detection, user adaptation, generation of credible social behavior for non-player characters, natural language processing and gamification;

• A set of proven practices for using asset-based applied games in various real world scenarios. In particular, the components will be used throughout the project to de-velop games for six real scenarios in order to improve the employability of European citizens, with the target professionals in active people looking for their first job and unemployed. In the case of Portugal, the project will develop a game to train the inter-rogation skills of inspectors from Polícia Judiciária.

8.3 HiFi- MRI

Mapping brain function in living humans has been a topic of intense research for several decades. It is believed that the brain is organized into sets of functionally distinct regions. And it is known that neural pathways exist between them, providing the anatomical link over which these functional relationships are established. The structure and dynamics of brain functional connectivity remain however incompletely understood.

Evidence from many studies suggests that brain functional connec-tivity networks are active even when the subject is at rest, allow-ing to identify such connectivity independently from stimulation. On the other hand most of studies rely on resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) for identifying functionally connected resting state networks (RSN), with large databases of rs-fMRI studies been set up and made available. The vast majority of these include data acquired using scanners working at 1.5 or 3 Tesla (T) field strengths. While such fields provide reliable (and safe) imaging of the human brain, they are limited in terms of sensitivity and spatial resolution. Ultra-high field strength MRI at 7T is rapid-ly developing, enabling generation of millimeter resolution images with reasonable signal-to-noise ratio. Only very recently has it be-come possible to achieve a whole-brain coverage at such fine spatial resolution, with sufficient temporal resolution for fMRI, leading to several technological and computational challenges. One of such challenges derived from working with high-resolution equipment is directly related to the size of the resulting data sets. Specialized algorithms and data structures are required to be able to handle and process the massive amounts of data generated.

We highlight now some of our main results. While working on fMRI data acquisition and pre-processing, we systematically compared different models of physiological noise in whole-brain, high-spa-tial-resolution rs-fMRI data collected at 7T. We found that noise sources estimated from cardiac/respiratory recordings and CSF/WM global signals are, to a great extent, complementary rather than overlapping.

New computational models and tools for were developed for the analysis of whole-brain ultra-high field rs-fMRI and extracting functional connectivity patterns. Studied net-works had one million vertices and edges were found by correlating 10¹² pairs of tempo-ral series. A tool relaying on efficient parallelization was developed for this task. We de-veloped also an approach for brain parcellation that takes advantage of the topological structure present in the spatial organization exhibited by rs-fMRI data, using methods based on discrete Morse theory and persistent homology. Parcellation of the brain into

2015

functionally meaningful regions is an important step for studying RSN. Our approach al-lows in particular the analysis of high resolution rs-fMRI data at different levels of detail.

Our main conclusions are that RSN are scale-free complex networks with an apparent underlying organization, where information flows from one point to another in a very efficient manner. We were also able to see that RSN have a modular structure, which is in accordance with previous findings for lower resolutions, but that were not reported previously for high resolutions.

These results were only possible with the close cooperation of multidisciplinary teams. The project was led by a team from INESC-ID with background and experience in the core tasks of data manipulation and modeling and analysis of complex networks. Additionally, a team from ISR/IST-ID contributed with experience in fMRI acquisition and analysis, and a world renowned team from the MGH/HST Martinos Center, specialized in high and ultra-high field MRI (3T, 7T and above) provided the expertise for high resolution human fMRI data collection.

8.4 JAMP

The JAMP project (NSRF 38947) is a new formula of teaching music through a gamified learning method. The results of using this innovative method of learning music show that this allows the creation of an ad-hoc music community in which students share knowl-edge, learn and practice together. This community creates enthusiasm for all users, mo-tivating them to continue to practice, to learn music and to improve their individual skills. The goal is to to make available the music learning and truly engage students in the music world in an inspiring way, both in the virtual and real environments.

Thus, a new formula to learn music based on an innovative method for keyboard and piano was developed that:

• Joins the school community (teachers and students) in a social network with “serious games” and artifi-cial intelligence that make easier, faster and fun the musical practice. The community is united through the use of a platform that allows the student to play the games and show their friends the development of their skills. In addition, it allows the teacher to be aware of the learning time of a student and what were their difficulties and the progression of their skills.

• Uses gamification techniques for learning and thus practice is more motivating and regular.

• Uses an artificial intelligence algorithm, which anal-yses the player’s reaction to the game and adapts its difficulty level, ensuring that motivation is maintained at a high level, allowing the adaptation of the learning curve to the player.

• Combines gamification with the classroom environment, ensuring the investment of the student.

With our innovative approach, users are able to learn to play the piano with their keyboard, connected to a computer or Tablet. The business proposition is to provide a platform that connects classrooms with individual musical practice at home.

Page 46: ANNUAL REPORT - INESC-ID

44

INESC-ID ANNUAL REPORT

2015

The concept implemented is based on full integration of all stakeholders:

The player gains access to the platform and games after having registered (see Figure 1). In this way it is possible to get all the player information (total playtime, daily average, country, location, difficulties and facilities of learning, etc.) This registration may, for ex-ample, be done through Facebook. After registration the player/student can play games at home and get feedback on her/his performance. On the other hand, a school teacher can also use games in the classroom during regular classes.

In short, the project has four main components:

• Learning Method aligned with an algorithm of artificial intelligence;

• Games that let you learn each of the major piano learning requirements: Reading, technique and repertoire;

• Gamification Platform.

In the figure below are shown the three graphic solutions game that were implemented, from left to right: Rover to the rhythm, theater with public games with agenda and empty theater for keyboard knowledge.

In the game, students can develop and practice the rhythm reading, melody reading, finger interdependence exercises and learn a very wide range of music: more than 100 songs from classical music, jazz and bossa nova to current pop and rock themes.

Team: The Project Consortium consists of the company Lusomusic, the leader, Wingzstudio - company responsible for the design and program-ming of the game and Present-Technologies - the company responsible for managing the web JAMP platform. INESC-ID is the entity responsible for developing the entire Intelligence Game Artificial and integration. The INESC-ID team consists of two researchers (Pedro A. Santos and Rui Prada) and a fellow (Frederico Freitas).

8.4 DependableCloud

The DependableCloud project focuses on the general theme of cloud computing, which is a new paradigm of organization of computer systems in which companies and organiza-tions transfer part of their computing infrastructure to an external supplier. This allows significant gains both in economic terms and also in access to an infrastructure of a much larger size than would be possible with investment in an infrastructure of its own.

The underlying infrastructure for cloud computing services has several innovative features, notably derived from the scale of the data centers where the services are run, and the geographic distribution of the various servers where the cloud data is repli-cated. As such, the project aims to develop new methods for de-veloping the services that make up the cloud infrastructure in or-der to address the new problems and challenges arising from the innovative features of these services and thereby improve their reliability and ensure that the quality of access of cloud services meets the expectations of its users. In particular, the project fo-cuses on the following two research topics:

First, and focusing on the geo-replicated systems, there is a fundamental tension be-tween the speed of access to the data that is replicated in several places and the con-sistency observed by the users of the system, that is, if the semantics of the access ap-proaches the behavior of an unreplicated system. To address this tension, our research team has developed methods and systems to build applications based on geo-replicated data whose access is fast whenever possible, and consistent whenever necessary.

Second, at the scale of the data centers that support cloud services, the failures that are observed are not limited to simple computer shutdowns but also include deviations from the behaviors expected for each participant in the distributed systems that make up cloud services (such as those arising from data transmission errors not detected by exist-ing redundancy mechanisms). To address this type of failure systematically, our team has developed a new fault model that encompasses arbitrary behaviors but is not as pessi-mistic as those predicting collusion between machines under the control of an opponent.

This ERC project, which began at FCT-UNL, and since May 2015, it has been developed at INESC-ID, articles have already been produced in the elite forums worldwide (such as OSDI, ASPLOS, EuroSys, or VLDB). In this moment, it is on an advanced prototyping phase, adopting the ideas that we proposed. In addition, some of the world’s best re-search groups and companies with a global scale have been using, refining, and building on results already produced under the DependableCloud project.
