About NAAEE For more than four decades, NAAEE has served as the professional association, champion, and backbone organization for the field of environmental education. Our members and supporters include EE professionals working in formal and nonformal education—including university professors; preschool educators; K–12 teachers and administrators; professionals in informal learning centers such as zoos, aquariums, museums, community centers, nature centers, and more; as well as those working in government agencies, foundations, and corporations. We work with our partners to create a more environmentally informed, committed, and active citizenry.

VisionA sustainable future for all where environmental and social responsibility drive individual and institutional choices.

MissionWe bring the brightest minds together to advance environmental literacy and civic engagement through the power of education.

Education We Need for the World We Wantnaaee.org

Environmental education is about helping people understand the relationship between healthy communities and healthy natural systems. It’s about how we, as humans, need to take a systems approach in making individual choices and work collaboratively across differences in race, ethnicity, geography, and cultural identity to shape a healthy, equitable, and sustainable future for our children.

— Steve Pemberton, Chief Diversity Officer, Walgreens Boots Alliance

From Anecdotes to Evidence: Demonstrating the power of environmental education

There is a mountain of evidence that suggests EE is a powerful way to teach students. Over 100 studies found that it provides transformative learning opportunities. There is no doubt that environmental education is one of the most effective ways to instill a passion for learning among students.

— Dr. Nicole Ardoin, StanfordUniversityGraduateSchoolofEducationandWoodsInstitute for the Environment

The peer-reviewed literature from the last decade-plus demonstrates that good environmental education can positively influence students’ academic performance, knowledge, skills, confidence, motivation, and behavior.

— Dr. Marc Stern,VirginiaTechUniversitySchoolof ForestResourcesandEnvironmentalConservation

A tremendous 98% of studies that examined whether students gained knowledge from environmental education saw a positive impact.10

I do have hope. Nature is enormously resilient, humans are vastly intelligent, the energy and enthusiasm that can be kindled among young people seems without limit, and the human spirit is indomitable. But if we want life, we will have to stop depending on someone else to save the world. It is up to us—you and me, all of us. Myself, I have placed my faith in the children.
