OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS

This annual report of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs summarizes efforts to en-courage and assist Miami University faculty and staff in their research, instruction, and publicservice activities during the 1"91-92 year. In its efforts during the year the Office worked closelywith committees such as the Committee on Faculty Research (CFR), the Research ChallengeProgram Committee, and the Miami Univ~rsityResearch Advisory Council (MURAC). In addi-tion to consideration of policy issues affecting creative activity at Miami, each of these committeesprovided recommendations for internal funding supportive of faculty research projects. Awards tofaculty through programs of these three committees in 1991-92are summarized in the Tablebelow.

A principal activity of the Office was assisting facultyin obtaining external funding for theircreative activity. In 1991-92 Miami University received 261 awards totalling $9,071,573 fromexternal sources in support of academic projects initiated by University personnel. This is a recordlevel of external support and represents an increase of 7% over funding received in 1990-91. Thisincrease is part of a sustained growth in external funding received through the Office of Researchand Sponsored Programs over the past decade.

The 1991-92grants were distributed amongresearch, instructional, and public service projects asfollows:

. Research

. Instructional

. Public Service

$ 3,862,518$ 4,336,837

$872,218

(43%)(48%)(9%)

These data show continued rapid growth in external support of instructional projects (from $3.6million in 1990-91) at Miami, reflecting the University's strengths in this area and the increasingavailability of external funding for such projects.

A variety of sources provided external funding to Miami for academic projects in 1991-92.Support from federal agencies exceeded 5.1 million dollars and comprised the majority (56.7%) ofexternal support, as shown below. State agencies, private foundations, corporations, and otherorganizations such as professional societies also contributed sizable portions to the overall support.

~ Professional Societies" and Organizations (5.4%)Other (0.4%)

The list of projects funded during the past year is impressive. Included are 24 awards totalling$2,583,578 from the National Science Foundation (NSF). A major NSF grant of $682,727 wasawarded for Miami's lead role in Project Discovery, the Ohio statewide effort to improve pre-college science and mathematics education. The announcement in 1991of this major StateSystemic Initiative award from NSF to the State of Ohio capped a year of hard work and collabo-ration on the part of many faculty and staff at Miami. Other significant NSF grants were obtainedby faculty for basic research projects, for major equipment acquisitions for teaching and researchlaboratories, and for pre-college teacher enhancementprojects. In addition to support receivedthrough NSF, Miami faculty and staff have continued to provide state and national leadershipthrough science and mathematics education programs funded within the Dwight D. EisenhowerScience and Mathematics Education Program coordinated by the Ohio Board of Regents (OBOR).Five projects were funded by this program during the 1991-92year, bringing to 31 the number ofMiami projects funded through this program since its inception in 1986. A particularly significantaccomplishment in 1991-92 was the receipt of five grants totalling $1,137,107 by MiamiUniversity's Middletown campus (MUM) in support of science education projects. These projectsare of great significance to the community.

Three additional grants during 1991-92 illustrate the breadth of sponsored projects at MiamiUniversity: $100,000 in funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities in continuedsuppon of a Distinguished Teaching Professorship in the humanities; a grant of $87,243 from theDepartment of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education in support ofthe English Department's "Writing Portfolio Assessment" project; and a grant of $103,497 fromthe United Parcel Foundation supporting the Minority Professional Leadership Program in theSchools of Applied Science and Business Administration.

Miami's continued success in obtaining external funding for scholarly projects reflects the exten-sive efforts of Miami faculty, staff, and students. During this year, 212 individuals prepared andsubmitted one or more proposals through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. Theseproposals, many of which are still pending with potential sponsors, will be the basis for continuingexternal support to Miami during the coming year. We congratulate these individuals, and allthose who helped them, and wish them continued success in their efforts to obtain support forscholarly work.

Staff of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs devoted considerable effort during thispast year to activities that support scholarship and enhance the climate for scholarship. Annualevents such as the "New Faculty Breakfast" and "Proposal Development Workshop" were con-tinued and favorably received by faculty. The Office also has made major strides in the electronicacquisition and dissemination of infonnation on funding opportunities. In addition, RSP staffcontinued to devote much effort during the year to service on the University's Human Subjects,Animal Care, Radiation Control, and Institutional Biosafety regulatory committees. Thesecommittees are important in ensuring the University's compliance with the increasingly complexfederal regulations.

Dr. William H. Rauckhorst, Associate Dean for Research and Sponsored Programs, was on leavewith the National Science Foundation during the first half of the 1991-92 year. The extra efforts ofhis colleagues in the Office during this time are acknowledged and greatly appreciated.

As of July 1, 1992 the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will become a part ofMiami's new Office for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching. This new Office willhave a broad mandate to encourage, initiate, assist, and celebrate faculty scholarship and teaching.The Office has enonnous potential for contributing to the University, and staff of the Office ofResearch and Sponsored Programs look forward to the challenge of helping to initiate the newOffice. The Office for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching will place a high priority oninteractions with Miami faculty and staff, and we look forward to working with members of theMiami community in this new capacity during the coming year.
