U.S.SenatorDearFriends,
The beginning of a new year provides the opportunity to reflect ontheprogressofthepastmonths.Ifyou’vebeenwatchingcableTV,youmight think that everywakingmomentof 09 inWashingtonhasbeenconsumedbydivisive, partisan issues–andwhile there’snoshortageofthosedebates,therehavealsobeenopportunitiesforbipartisancooperation.YousentmetotheSenatetomakethemostofthoseopportunities,soasweenterintotheNewYear,IwantedtotakeamomenttoupdateyouonmyeffortstoworkwithmembersofbothpartiestomakelifebetterforthepeopleofMaine.

This year has also continued the growth of Maine’s forest productsindustry – a key focus of my work to revitalize Maine’s rural economyand communities. We’ve seen significant investment in mills across thestate, creatinggoodjobstosupportruralMaine.I’malsopleasedthattheinvestments aren’t just in our mills – the industry is thriving because ofits commitment to innovation. We’re fortunate to have theUniversity ofMaine’stop-notchresearchersexploringcutting-edgewaystouseourforestresources,includingcapitalizingontheriseofDprintingtechnologywiththeworld’slargestDprinter.Combiningthisworkwithongoingfederalsupport,ourvastforests,andMaine’sdedicatedworkforce,Iknowthatthefutureofthisindustryisbright,andI’llcontinueworkingtosupportitonallfronts.
