Agencies were challenged to deliver more efficient services with fewer resources.Advocates and families were asked to be patient.

Within this climate of uncertainty, we felt itwas important to revisit and solidify our ownvision. During the months of December andJanuary, we participated in a very valuablestrategic planning process. This was facilitated by Bob Logelin, Department Chairof the Adult Special Education program atDouglas College. Through this process, we

invited our participants, families, management, staff, and other stakeholdersto provide us with input on the future direction of our agency.

We argued (just a very little bit) over exact language, but were consistent in our opinion about the agency’s mandate. As an overarching goal, it was clear that we strive to facilitate the independenceand growth of children and adults living with a developmental disability.

APRIL 2004 – MARCH 2005

The past year was an eventful one for the North Shore Associationfor the Mentally Handicapped and the entire community living fieldas the provincial government continued with its plans to establishCommunity Living British Columbia and to introduce a new model ofservice delivery throughout the province.

Board Report

Our common values include excellence, creativity, dignity, and responsiveness. We believe the following:

• Everything we do can be improved.• New ideas are needed to change the future

of community living services on the North Shore.

• Everyone embracing the values of the organization will do what is best for the individual served, each other, and our stakeholders.

• Our community’s needs are urgent and we have a responsibility to respond immediately to all requests.

We celebrate the individuality and diversity of each person. We value the contributionsof each person. We believe in a communitywhere everyone belongs. We promoteunderstanding and acceptance through participation in community life. We believeworking together makes a difference andshapes the future. These are the values thatguide us in our work with the people weserve, their families, our membership, ourstaff, and our community.

We talked a lot about corporate citizenship. For us, this refers to our efforts, activities, and interest in integrating into, contributingto, and supporting the communities wherewe deliver services to better address theneeds of the people we support. As aresponsible corporate citizen, the NSAMHensures that people with a developmentaldisability are seen as contributing members

of the community. We promote inclusion and maximize access to generic and specialized services. This is at the heart ofour strategic plan that will carry us throughthe next several years.

In conjunction with this evolving strategicplan, we are seeking accreditation fromCARF Canada. This process will help ensure that the NSAMH continues to meetextremely high standards for employmentand the community services we offer. We anticipate that surveyors will do an on-site assessment during December 2005.In the meantime, we have formed an accessibility planning committee and an outcomes management committee that meet regularly to help us set and measuregoals that are identified as important to our community.

Despite the instability of the current community living climate, the year broughtexciting new opportunities for individualswith developmental disabilities. Within ouragency, we celebrated many accomplishmentsand found ways to creatively enhance existing services.

The following are just a few examples of theopportunities that happened last year withinthe NSAMH:

• North Shore ConneXions celebrated its one-year anniversary of facilitating diverse recreational and social activities for hundreds of individuals of all ages.

Page 13: Annual Report/2004-2005

• The adult community-based respite program was launched in April 2004 and now supports almost forty families (four times more than the previous facility-based program).

• Participants of the Avengers youth program were commissioned to develop a video that illustrates the educational experiences of youth with special needs.

• Renovations at Edgemont House allowed three programs to amalgamate under one beautiful roof and to offer improved servicesfor all residents.

• The family care program continued to support five individuals and allowed one other person to move from a group home into a more suitable resource within the community.

• The NSAMH Foundation transferred funds to the agency so that it was able to purchase a new van for the residents of Barlynn House.

The year ahead will undoubtedly bring manynew opportunities for the individuals andfamilies we support. As an agency that hasbeen evolving since 1956, we are excitedabout the future and are confident that wewill continue to grow with our community. We are looking forward to our 50thanniversary and are currently examiningthe possibility of changing the name ofour association. Stay tuned for detailson each of these important issues.

In closing, we would like to thank ourmembers for their ongoing support.

We would also like to thank the agency’sleadership and staffing team for their creativityand dedication. The Board of Directorsremains deeply committed to making opportunities happen for people with disabilities and their families.
