GCE ‘N’ Level Results 2014 GCE ‘O’ Level Results 2014Swiss Cottage is proud to celebrate the achievements of our 88 Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) and 35 Secondary 4 Normal (Technical) students at the 2014 GCE ‘N’ Level Examination.

92.1% of our Normal (Academic) students are eligible for promotion to study Secondary 5, 87.5% are eligible for the Direct Entry Scheme-to-Polytechnic Programme (Higher NITEC) (DPP) and 22.7% are eligible for the Poly Foundation Programme (PFP).

71.4% of our Normal (Technical) students passed all 6 subjects offered to them.

Swiss Cottage celebrates the noteworthy achievements of our 186 Secondary 4 Express, 48 Secondary 5 Normal (Academic), Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) and Secondary 3 Express students at the 2014 GCE ‘O’ Level Examination.

As like our ‘N’ Level results, we see many peaks of excellence including many areas achieving 100% Passes, improvement in percentage passes, improvement in percentage Distinction, above national percentage in Passes and Distinction. A snapshot of Swiss Cottage’s achievements is given below:

• 86 (46.2%) and 63 (33.9%) of our Secondary 4 Express students achieved at least five and six Distinctions respectively.

• Our Secondary 4 Express cohort has achieved the highest percentage Distinction in Higher Chinese Language (HCL) ever in Swiss History at 69.7%; this is also 30% higher than the national percentage in Distinction for HCL.

• Our Secondary 4 Express cohort has achieved above national percentage in Passes for ALL subjects.

• 91.1% and 47.8% of our Secondary 5 Normal (Academic) cohort achieved Passes in at least three and five ‘O’ Level subjects respectively.

• 10.9% of our Secondary 5 Normal (Academic) students are eligible for JC/MI and 67.4% are eligible for Polytechnics. Two students have achieved three or more Distinctions.

• Our Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students have achieved above national percentage in Passes and Distinction in the ‘O’ level subjects offered to them.

• Our Secondary 3 Express students have performed well in their mother language subjects offered to them.

The positive results achieved by our students would not have been possible without the dedication, passion and sustained efforts from all our teachers and staff as well as our close partnerships with parents. Moving forward, we will continue to work together as a community to bring the school to greater heights.

2014: THREE YEARS DEEP INTO THOUGHTFUL LEADERSHIP JOURNEY Going Far, Going Together, the Swiss Way

The CenTre FOr ThOughTFul leaDershiP

With the definition of the Centre for Thoughtful Leadership (CTL) as the unit that oversees the Thoughtful Leadership Distinctive Programme in 2013, the school is now abuzz with a complete and streamlined Total Curriculum that delivers a truly holistic education – with a three-prong focus on developing the intellect, character and leadership of each Swiss student through the Instructional Programme, Student Development and Thoughtful Leadership Programme respectively.

The Thoughtful Leadership Programme is the Learning for Life curriculum that propels the Thoughtful Leadership focus. It is one of the two Distinctive Programmes (the second being the Swiss Applied Sciences for Sustainable Development Programme - the Applied Learning Programme) of the school.

In 2014, the Centre for Thoughtful Leadership made up of staff overseeing three sub-programmes, namely Glocal Perspectives Programme (GPP), Values-in Action Programme (VIAP) and Student Leadership Programme (StLP) began a journey of refinement of each sub-programme. The idea was to have the ‘taught’ curriculum in GPP and StLP culminate in the VIA efforts of the students. At the same time, 2014 was the inaugural year when the youngest of the three programmes, GPP was piloted among the Secondary 1 Express classes.

The GPP is a school-based curriculum designed to inspire our students’ thought, concern and action for the community by making constant links to the world they live in.

The eFg Thinking Framework

It reframes the Swiss Thinking Programme with a deliberate emphasis on developing leaders who are grounded in values. Such leaders can demonstrate the following three dimensions of thought - to think ethically, to think in a forward-looking

and positive manner and to think with the global/local (Glocal) contexts - so that when they create change, it is humane, sustainable and meaningful.

The three dimensions of thought are known as the EFG Thinking Framework. To develop the desired mode of thinking, GPP develops key habits of thinking under each dimension of thought (Refer to the diagram Dimensions of Thought). For example Ethical Thinking is displayed through moral reasoning and perspective-taking when confronted with a moral choice or dilemma during problem-solving. Likewise, Forward and Positive Thinking are seen through the ability to do problem-solving and positive-self-talk in the face of challenges. And Glocal thinking is demonstrated through critical thinking and an awareness of cross-cultural skills.

A skill-set anchors each module taught and is assessed every term. (Refer to the following picture on the topics planned for the two years.

Leadership


The GPP is designed for two years. At the end of the two years, we expect our students to be able to:

• discuss local and world issues with confidence

• articulate a well-considered position on an issue

• actively initiate suggestions for possible social action and change and

• experience knowledge amalgamation using authentic materials and contexts through the use of communication and collaboration skills as well as through independent learning and knowledge application.

Developing an informed response On Topics Through Perspective-shifting

Students were exposed to perspectives on a given topic that were explored through phases: from the activation of their (i) familiar and personal schema, then (ii) the familiar but less personal local views and and finally (iii) the less familiar and less personal global stand-points – before arriving at an informed and locally rooted personal perspective.

This approach of shifting perspectives was anchored through a variety of pedagogical approaches including research, role-play, debates, discussions and inquiry-based projects.

The six core skills of the EFG (Ethical, Forward/Positive and Glocal) Thinking Framework: Perspective-Taking, Moral Reasoning, Positive Self-Talk, Problem Solving, Cross-Cultural Communications and Critical Thinking are integrated into a Thinking Scaffold which also gets students to process values. (Refer to Step 4 of the Seven-Step Thinking Scaffold). The Thinking Scaffold is modelled in each module by the teachers and students apply these skill-sets. This is repeated across the various GP modules in a Spiral Progression to anchor the desired Thinking mode of the Thoughtful Leader. The Seven-Step Thinking Scaffold can be summarised into three stages of Awareness, Action and Advocacy which is the overarching approach of all Thoughtful Leadership Programmes (GP, StL and VIA).

The GPP was implemented in 2014 to Secondary 1 Express students as a pilot programme. Selected lessons were trialed among students from the Secondary 1 Normal Academic and Normal Technical streams. By 2015, all Secondary 1 and 2 classes were introduced to GPP. By 2016, plans are underway for the Secondary 3 students to experience a social action project that will require them to apply scientific principles learnt from the Applied Learning Programme and targeted skill-sets taught during GPP to resolve a Values-In-Action outcome.

The Values-aCTiOn-PrOgraMMe

The key objectives of the Swiss Values in Action Programme (VIAP) are to (i) deliver the desired student outcomes, (ii) generate positive impact on the beneficiaries and (iii) forge sustainable and mutually-benefitting partnerships between Swiss Cottage Secondary School and our community partners, both local and international.

The 3a learning Framework

The Swiss VIAP is one of the key levers to develop student character, leadership and spirit for volunteering. With a two-tiered whole-school approach to deliver the programme, all Swiss students experience VIA through diversified cohort programmes and student-directed VIA activities. The VIA curriculum is delivered through the “Awareness-Action-Advocacy” (3A) learning framework to ensure that our students gain the essential knowledge, skills, experience, values and attitudes for them to continue VIA beyond school.

The expanding Contexts

The 3A approach is experienced through expanding contexts of experience – starting with care for the self, followed by the family, school, community, nation and the world. These contexts are deliberately constructed through the cohort programmes at every level as shown in the graphic below.

The sTuDenT leaDershiP PrOgraMMe

The Swiss Student Leadership Programme (StLP) aims to develop Thoughtful Leaders by providing students a myriad of opportunities and focused training to develop into a Thoughtful Leader.

The PeMT leadership Framework

It is a leadership curriculum based on our PEMT Framework – an acronym referring to the qualities in Principled, Efficacious leaders with Managerial competencies and a Transformational mindset. The framework guides the focus of the cohort programmes every year. The cohort programmes teach explicit leadership competencies across the four to five years of student life. The student leadership curriculum relies on spiral progression across the 4-5 years to develop the qualities of a Thoughtful Leader.

• At Secondary 1, self-leadership and self-management competencies help students manage the increased workload from primary school and settle down in secondary school.

• At Secondary 2, peer leadership competencies such as communication and facilitation skills are taught. These skills are applied through direct their Integrated Project Work module.

• At Secondary 3, students step up as seniors in their CCAs and other student body groups. Hence, they are equipped with advanced peer leadership competencies such as action management and project management skills. These skills are also used in the planning and execution of their Overseas Eldercare Project (VIA) project in Malaysia.

• By Secondary 4 and 5, students are given space and platform to mentor their juniors before they step down from their positions.

Tier 2 Training for select group

The StLP has a 2-tier structure. Besides the cohort programmes, StLP also organises programmes for select student leaders serving key positional leadership roles at school level in order to stretch and develop their leadership potential to the fullest.

Our Tier 2 leadership training is customised for our select student leader groups which comprises the Student Council, Sports Leaders and CCA Council. As of now, we have established a Tier 2 curriculum based on our framework which includes leadership modules, mentoring, platforms for student leaders and also leadership stories based on our Habitudes material. In addition, external platforms have also been given to student leaders such as attendees for national leaders conference (NS3LC), Service Learning Symposium, National Youth Leaders Conference, sharing at MOE Excelfest and various student leadership conferences.

Student Leadership ProgramThe Swiss Student Leadership Program has a 2-tier structure comprising cohort programme as well as select programme. For the cohort programme, the school developed a student leadership curriculum based on our PEMT framework (Principled, Efficacious leaders with Managerial competencies and a Transformational mindset) which focuses on explicit leadership competencies at the different cohort levels to allow students to develop into a Thoughtful Leader. Racial Harmony Day

On the 1st of July 2014, the school held a commemorative event on the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day and NCC Day. The SAF Day is a day with significant meaning for the National Servicemen (NSmen) as well as the rest of the nation. On this special day, thousands of servicemen, both past and present, pay tribute to national service; while schools express thanks to the many NSmen for their contributions to ensure the peace and security of Singapore. A strong SAF keeps Singapore safe and secure. We can raise our families, pursue our careers and live relatively worry-free lives. Our stable environment attracts foreign investors who know that their investments are safe in Singapore. These investments contribute to our nation's economy and create jobs for our people. ‘I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand’. An infamous quote by Confucius that inspired 2014 Racial Harmony Day Celebration which was a cultural showcase put up by the collaborative efforts between the Citizenship Education Committee and the Mother Tongue Department.

This year, the Racial Harmony Day Celebration coincided with the Mother Tongue Fortnight. After nearly two weeks of interesting lessons about their respective cultures, Swiss students were given the opportunity to learn more about the other ethnic cultures in Singapore through the various cultural booths that were set up in the hall. They had the opportunity to learn more about games such as chapteh and actually try their hands at painting Chinese masks and even designing Rangolis.

A total of thirteen booths that were set up by the Mother Department to provide

varied learning opportunities. At each booth, students answered various questions that were prepared for them in their Racial Harmony Day passports. Through such hands on activities, our students were better able to understand the various cultural practices in Singapore.

This cultural showcase was made sweeter by the presence of a food bazaar which saw our students trying delicacies like putu piring, satay, dragon beard candy and even kacang puteh. With students and staff dressed in colorful ethnic costumes and the hall blasting with the sounds of ethnic music, the school came to live in its appreciation of Singapore’s diverse cultural practices. Through such authentic learning experiences, students learned to appreciate the diversity and complexity of our various cultural practices thus forging Harmony from the Heart.

International Friendship Day Total Defence DayOn the 9th of April 2014, the school hall reverberated with the pulsating sounds of pop music blaring through the sound system. A group of international students from various different countries decked out in their respective countries’ traditional costumes and sashayed down the hall as the music played on. This fashion parade was the first of many more programmes lined up for the week as our school celebrated International Friendship Day. In close collaboration with international students in our school and their parents, the Citizenship Education committee planned an exciting array of programmes to introduce this year’s theme, “Stories We Share”, to Swiss students. The programmes included morning assembly presentations by our own Swiss international students and teachers, interactive booths as well as specially designed CCE lessons.

A group of international students were entrusted with the task of engaging the Secondary One students with after-school activities. They set up several interactive booths including food booths that introduced their Singaporean friends to culinary delights from countries such as Japan, Philippines, Myanmar and Korea. Swiss students were also taught about the intricacies of the various national costumes on display. Our international students did a commendable job preparing the various culinary delights, manning the booths and answering the various questions posed by their fellow schoolmates.

A mock passport was also printed for all the Secondary 1 students. Students who successfully managed to participate in all the activities conducted at the interactive booths would receive a stamp to certify

that they were indeed global citizens of the world. The students clearly enjoyed themselves as they learned from their fellow schoolmates and participated in the various hands on activities.

This year’s programme was made even more eventful by the fact that it was a largely student-led initiative which saw close collaborations between our international students, their parents who help conduct some cooking demonstrations at the interactive booths as well as the Citizenship Education Committee.

It is hoped that through the various stories shared during the various programmes conducted that our Swiss students get to fully understand and appreciate the rich myriad of cultures and practices present in the world today.

Marielle, 4E3: It was a wonderful

experience for me as I learnt how to plan

and execute a school based programme

for my fellow school mates. I also found

it very fulfilling as I get to share some

aspects of my culture with them.

Muzammir, 1E5: The booths were stupendously amazing. Passports were given to us as a head start on what we could expect from the various booths in the afternoon. It was beyond my expectations as I really enjoyed participating in the various hands on activities available at the various booths.

Zhang Liu, 3E5: The event was meaningful as I learnt about its various cultures from different countries. Participating in this event has also enriched my knowledge about the local culture since I have only been in Singapore for six months. I hope to learn more about Singapore and its’ various cultures from such school events.

Nur Sabrina, 1E5: The presentation in the morning kick started the day’s programme with beautiful and eye-catching costumes that were presented by our international students. The various booths that were presented in the afternoon were really engaging. International Friendship Day is all about strengthening bonds between friends from different countries and cultures through activities put up by the school.

On the 8th August, Swiss Cottage conducted our very own parade to celebrate the 49th birthday of our country. It was also a showcase of our outstanding Uniformed Groups (UG) as well as the acclaimed Swiss Winds, the only NCC Command Band in Singapore.

Marching to the resounding beat of the band, the UGs exemplified the core values discipline and resilience. The parade served as a good reminder to our students that ‘We must ourselves defend Singapore’, not only highlighting the importance of military defence, it signified the need for psychological defence that stemmed from every Singaporean and resident.

As a school with students from diverse backgrounds, the parade added another dimension of celebration where students who were awarded citizenship in 2013-14 were tasked to lead the school in the pledge-taking ceremony. Wrapping up the parade celebration, there was no better way than to have the Swiss Winds Drum Line showcased their passion and talent for music by playing a fast beat tune to hype up the crowd.

After the parade, we continued the National Day celebrations with a concert in the hall. Students enjoyed the game of ‘Fun Facts of Singapore. Bingo!’ at the concert as part of our pre-SG50 celebrations. The enthusiasm was clear when the hall burst into life with all students competing to be the first few to complete their random Bingo answer cards.

The hype continued through the next game show activity where Swiss conducted our very first ‘Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Teachers’ Edition)’. Spurred by the intense competition between the two groups of teachers, students rallied and filled in the lyrics of our favourite National Day songs as helpline for them. This eventually led the school to the traditional mass singing session where students and teachers alike, resonated in meaningful lyrics of songs like ‘Home’ & ‘One People, One Nation, One Singapore’.

4D3N Cultural Immersion Programme @ Kampung Pelegong, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca, Malaysia

In line with MOE’s vision of "Active Learner, Proficient User" for Mother Tongue languages, the Mother Tongue Languages Department - Malay Unit organised a four-day-three-night Cultural Immersion Programme to Malaysia. The programme aimed to enrich students’ knowledge and enhance the appreciation of Malay culture. This is achieved through a homestay experience with the locals at Kampung Pelegong, Negeri Sembilan, learning about the art of traditional handicrafts and the Malay history at Malacca.

A group of 23 Secondary 3 students went on the trip to experience the lives of the locals and enjoyed close interactions with their host families. Besides learning the dance steps of a traditional dance and mastering the playing of caklempong (a Malay traditional instrument), our

students also gone through hands-on sessions in weaving baskets using rattan, learning how to cook traditional dishes, playing traditional games and fishing in a traditional manner.

Students were involved in a gotong-royong session where they joined the villagers in cleaning up the mosque and its vicinity. The spirit of togetherness and co-operation were clearly portrayed through this session. In Malacca, our students had a better understanding of the Malay culture and the importance of bilateral ties between Singapore and Malaysia.

Overall, the programme was an eye-opener for many of our students who gained from a better understanding of the colourful Malay culture and rich history.

I experienced a totally different lifestyle compared to what I know in Singapore. This made my participation in the Cultural Immersion Programme most memorable and valuable. I have learnt many values during this trip, for example, nurturing patience while fishing in the traditional manner, demonstrating the school’s Dare to Try values while learning traditional dance and instruments, and building resilience while mastering the traditional games.

I was also able to learn and build new knowledge about history through my journey in Malacca. The trip has also deepened my interest in world histories. I was also able to understand better the bilateral ties between Singapore and Malaysia.

The homestay at Pelegong, Negeri

Sembilan, was the best experience I

ever had as it was my first time staying

in a kampong. The activities, such

as dancing with my friends, playing

traditional instruments and traditional

games were really fun and engaging.

I was glad to be able to participate

in all these activities instead of just

reading about them. The kampong

lifestyle is totally different than the

lifestyle in Singapore especially in

terms of the relationships among

people. The whole kampong has a

friendly atmosphere that welcomes

everyone in any gatherings.

Their gotong-royong spirit is

remarkable. I will bring back this

experience and try to get to know

about my neighbours more than just

a “Hi” and a “Bye”. I wish for a longer

homestay to build stronger bonds

with my host family, as well as, doing

more activities in the kampong.

In November 2014, 3T1 embarked on a meaningful journey to help the children in a village in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This village is located in a slum area, where living conditions are bad and there are insufficient amenities for the villagers. As part of their service learning project, 3T1 partnered T-House School in the village to interact and bring hope to the children there.

Through the charity drive that was conducted in school, 3T1 managed to collect clothings, stationaries and books for the Cambodian children over there. At the same time, a hygiene kit was also prepared for the children to learn about personal hygiene. After months of careful preparation, the class managed to prepare English, Math, Science and Art lessons for the children. Using real life examples that might be useful for the Cambodian children, the class taught the children the importance of personal hygiene, basic first aid, money management and the skills to make photo frames which then can be made as a source of income for the children.

The experience in Cambodia also made 3T1 students better appreciate the things that they have in Singapore. The harsh living conditions they saw in Cambodia made them realise how precious life is and they learned to treasure and cherish opportunities that are made available to them.
