LINEAR COMBINATION OF GENETIC ALGORITHM SARIMA MODEL IN MODELLING SINGAPORE TOURIST ARRIVAL TO MALAYSIA

Mr. Zulariffin Md. Maarof Dept. of Mathematical Science, UTM

The main issue in developing forecast model is to determine a higher accuracy that suits any type of data characteristics. Currently, Combination model

technique becomes popular because it is more robust and accurate. Hence, this study investigates the combination of SARIMA model with heuristic

genetic algorithm method and linear combination of simple average (SA),  Discounted mean square forecast error (DMSE) and Variance-Covariance (VACO) models in modeling Singapore tourist arrival to Malaysia. The analysis is divided into two parts; (1) In Sample (for fitting the data), (2) Out sample

(for forecasting). The empirical results demonstrate that the proposed linear combination models are robust and outperform the individual model in modeling Out sample forecasting models.

A NOTE ON FUZZY MATHEMATICS AND ITS APPLICATIONSMr. Norazrizal Aswad Abdul Rahman IMK, UniMAP

In this talk, we present the classical Sumudu transform in fuzzy environment, referred as fuzzy Sumudu transform (FST). We also present some results on the properties of the FST such as linearity, preserving, fuzzy derivative, shifting and convolution theorem. In order to show the

capability of the FST, we present detailed procedures to solve fuzzy differential equations (FDEs). A numerical example is presented to illustrate the use of the FST.

DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS: A THEORETICAL VIEW

Research on the measurement and evaluation of efficiency has been progressing well in the last few decades. An important element in the measurement of

efficiency is a production function which defines the relationship between the outputs and inputs of a production technology. Mathematically, a production function relates the amount of output (Y) as a function of the amount of input (X) used to generate

that output. Technical efficiency is assumed for a production function i.e., every feasible combination of inputs generates the maximum possible output (from output orientation) or all

outputs are produced using the minimum feasible combination of inputs (from input orientation). Efficiency can then be measured relative to the frontier defined by the production function. One of

the leading methods for measuring efficiency is Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Nowadays, DEA has been applied to a variety of research areas. Most of the performance evaluation

models presented in the literature on DEA are divided into two categories. In the first category, the methods focused on the production possibility set (PPS) to provide models for special purposes. In

the second category, the methods focused on projecting an inefficient DMU onto the efficient frontier using different measures. In this talk, two different procedures of designing linear

programming models (LP) associated with DEA models are followed, and subsequently, relationship between production possibility set (PPS) and the Linear programming problem, corresponding with

a DEA model, is dealt with. Furthermore, we ponder how retouching the different parts of LP will effect on PPS.

GOD’S GRAND DESIGN OF OUR UNIVERSE

Dr. Mohamad Nazri Abdul Halif IMK, UniMAP

The human curiosity, from the naked eye observation of our universe comes from the theology and philosophy frameworks; the geocentric and heliocentric models of our solar system. In this talk I will sketch the basic historical perspective of cosmology and its latest development, so called the Quantum Gravity or the popular terms, known as the String Theory, and M-Theory, which are guided by the combination of Mathematics and Physics,

in order to cosmologically explore the relation between special relativity and quantum mechanics.    The hidden/extra-dimension of universe, theoretically, up to the eleventh-dimensional (11-D) universe, with additional six-hidden dimensions, by the framework of ‘mem(branes)’ of the world, and the gravitational effects (gravitons), which are too small to see, but relatively big. This talk will summarize the important parts of String Theory, as the framework to understand how universe exists, and, the crucial part of the experimental evidence and some arguments.

FUZZY SET THEORY AND ITS APPLICATIONS

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmod Othman Faculty of Science Computer & Mathematics UiTM Arau, Perlis

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word fuzzy as “blurred, indistinct, imprecisely defined, confused, vague,” Fuzzy logic (FL) and system design have attracted the growing interest of researchers and various scientific and engineering areas. FL is based on the way the brain deals with inexact information.  Specifically, FL systems

take the linguistic and numerical information as dual data sources and provide the answer accordingly in a vague manner, which includes numerous solutions. It is better to start with FL principles and arrive at a set of fuzzy conclusions than to conclude with classical logic (CL) (two-valued logic) a mathematical approach with only one crisp result, which may never appear in real life. FL is a powerful problem-solving methodology with a myriad of applications in embedded control and information processing. Its principles provide a remarkably simple way to draw definite conclusions from vague, ambiguous, or imprecise information. In a sense, FL resembles human decision making with its ability to work from approximate data and find precise solutions. Further, the application of FL can also provide an effective way for formulating decision problems in a fuzzy environment where the information available is subjective and imprecise. The decision making environment is most often complex, which makes it difficult to formulate a suitable mathematical model. To cope with complex situations, the FL principles and modeling are justified because such modeling digests linguistic information in addition to numerical data. In many situations, linguistic information is obtainable through observations more easily than through numerical information. FL has gained increasing acceptance during the past few decades. Nearly every application and research can potentially realize some of the FL benefits, such as performance, simplicity, lower cost, and productivity.

BREATHING MODES OF LONG JOSEPSHON JUNCTIONS: FROM THE HISTORY OF SUPERCONDUCTORS,

RADIATIVE DECAY, TO APPLICATIONSAssoc. Prof. Dr. Hadi Susanto

Dept. of Mathematical Sciences, University of Essex, UK

In this talk, we will consider a sine-Gordon equation modeling a long Josephson junction that is made of two overlapping superconductors. By imposing a shift in the phase of the equation field,

one introduces localized modes to the system (i.e. eigenvalues of the corresponding linearized differential operator). Once excited such modes will oscillate (quasi) periodically in time. Due to the

coupling with non-localized modes from the dispersion relation (i.e. continuous spectrum of the linearized differential operator), the oscillation will decay by emitting radiation. In this talk, we will review the physics and modeling of the long Josephson junction, the physics of the spatial phase-

shift, the mechanism of the radiative decay as well as some potential applications of the radiation.

PENETRATE POTENTIAL COLLABORATION WITH UNIMAP'S CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE; AN EXPERIENCE IN DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS AND CLASSIFICATION IN MULTI SENSOR DATA FUSION

Puan Maz Jamilah Masnan IMK, UniMAP

Institut Matematik Kejuruteraan (IMK) is one of the institutes in UniMAP with the core business of providing service courses to ten schools and faculties. Being a service institute has hindered some IMK’s staffs to play a significance role as researcher, active academic authors, and leaving them behind in terms of huge grant allocation, publication, citation as well as consultation. Even though, IMK begins to receive its own postgraduate students, which is a benefit to some of the senior lecturers, the young lecturers have limited opportunity to expand their expertise. This session is sort of an eye opener to all the institute members to penetrate potential collaboration with the UniMAP’s centers of excellence and the university research clusters as well. An experience of collaborating with the Centre for Advanced Sensors Technology (CEASTech) is shared. In this sense, their need for Multivariate Statistical Data Analysis expert to support their research such as in the area of multi sensor data fusion has been a great partnership. Some pleasant yet challenging journey and experiences of being the collaborator are disclosed.

FROM MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS TOWARDS ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS – PROTON EXPERIENCE

Mr. Anuar Alias PROTON Professor Office Research Department, Vehicle Development & Eng. Division PROTON Sdn. Bhd. Shah Alam

The essence of engineering is physics and mathematics. Mathematics is analogically as the language that relates the physical meaning in engineering problems. In doing engineering in the era where engineering software is available anywhere in the markets, engineers may overlook the importance to look back at the fundamentals behind. Most problems may then be solved like a black box where results are the most sort after, thus the importance of the process of solving engineering fundamentally sometime may get neglected. However certain engineering problems require quick decision to a solution before more detail solutions that are using the available engineering software are required. The mathematical modelling of the engineering problem that can be simplified to a set of equations which is simple to solve numerically not only very useful for solving engineering problem that require the quick decision but also very useful to predict the range of solution as preparation for more detail solution by available engineering software. The prediction for a range of solution is very good preparation before a more detail solution by available engineering software is carried out, so as the level of confidence toward the accuracy of the result by the final solution is higher than solving by just purely using the available software. Moreover some engineering processes that have been utilized for some time using complicated methods that require trial and error may actually be improved significantly by simple set of equation derived after a creative mathematical model from the understanding of its fundamental physics principle. This talk will briefly expose interested audience actual mathematical solutions to engineering problems in automotive industry that contributes to quick decision process, predicting range of solution for the confidence in final solution accuracy using available software as well as equipped engineers with the appreciation of fundamental physics  and its “language” that is the mathematics behind. The appreciation of the fundamentals of the 20th and 21th century engineering and beyond will be enlightened.

PARTIAL DISCHARGE LOCATION TECHNIQUE FOR COVERED-CONDUCTOR OVERHEAD DISTRIBUTION LINES Dr. Muzamir Isa School of Electrical System Engineering, UniMAP

Covered-conductor (CC) overhead lines are commonly used in medium voltage (MV) networks because the loads are widely distributed in the forested terrain. Such parts of the network are exposed to leaning trees which produce partial

discharges (PDs) in CC lines. This work presents a technique to locate the PD source on CC overhead distribution line networks. The algorithm is developed and tested using a simulated study and experimental measurements. The Electromagnetic Transient Program-Alternative Transient Program (EMTP-ATP) is used to simulate and analyze a three-phase PD monitoring system, while MATLAB is used for post-processing of the high frequency signals which were measured. A Rogowski coil is used as the measuring sensor. A multi-end correlation-based technique for PD location is implemented using the theory of maximum correlation factor in order to find the time difference of arrival (TDOA) between signal arrivals at three synchronized measuring points. The three stages of signal analysis used are: 1) denoising  by applying discrete wavelet transform (DWT); 2) extracting the PD features using the absolute or windowed standard deviation (STD) and; 3) locating the PD point. The advantage of this technique is the ability to locate the PD source without the need to know the first arrival time and the propagation velocity of the signals. In addition, the faulty section of the CC line between three measuring points can also be identified based on the degrees of correlation. An experimental analysis is performed to evaluate the PD measurement system performance for PD location on CC overhead lines. The measuring set-up is arranged in a high voltage (HV) laboratory. A multi-end measuring method is chosen as a technique to locate the PD source point on the line. A power transformer 110/20 kV was used to energize the AC voltage up to 11.5 kV/phase (20 kV system). The tests were designed to cover different conditions such as offline and online measurements. The work evaluates the possibility of using a Rogowski coil for locating faults in MV distribution lines and a test bench of a 20 kV distribution network is developed. Different fault scenarios are simulated including earth and phase faults, arcing faults and faults caused by leaning trees. Results favorably show the possibility of using a Rogowski coil for locating faults in distribution networks.

DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS IN AN IMPRECISE WORLD

Dr. Muhammad Zaini Ahmad IMK, UniMAP

For centuries, differential equations have proven a successful modelling paradigm. In a wide range of disciplines, the behaviour of an idealised version of a system under study has been adequately described by one or more ordinary or partial

differential equations. The real-world, however, is pervaded with imprecision. This is patently obvious when dealing with ‘living’ material, such as soil, water, microbial populations,

etc. Imprecision arises due to our limited perception of the real-world. Various theories exist for describing this kind of imprecision, the most popular one being fuzzy set theory, where the notion of a

linguistic variable plays a key role. It is therefore not surprising that there is a vast literature dealing with fuzzy differential equations. In this talk, fuzzy differential equations will be presented under

various types of interpretation..

HEAT TRANSFER AND FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

Dr. Moslemuddin Fakir IMK, UniMAP

Heat transfer is a regular phenomenon in our everyday life. When we talk about engine and when it works, the engine is heated. So transfer of heat

from the engine to cool down is very essential. Thus, we can be sure for the safety and longevity of the engine. How finite element method

works for initial boundary value problems and how numerical solutions can be obtained using this method is the main focus here.
