With appreciation from Annunciation Conference of

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

With the completion of its fiscal year on 9/30/16, the St. Vincent de Paul Conference at Annunciation takes this opportunity to pass on the heartfelt THANKS from those in need, to you who have supported SVdP efforts by your donations, involvement and prayers. Through this ministry, we are following in His footsteps by reaching out to help feed, house, and care for those in need. The summary of our efforts for our fiscal year include:

**Spending kept low by parish/school donations and membership at North Alabama Food Bank. Actual value of food distributed is $12,496.23

During this period, Annunciation’s SVdP added a weekly food distribution hour in May and earned its aggregation as a recognized conference in the international organization. The lives touched, the differences made, and the evangelizing that happened were made possible, in part, by you. Thank you for your generosity.

Interested volunteers are always welcome to visit our weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 4:30 in the Small Nursery or call Anne Werling at (256) 654-2124.

December 12, 2016

Dear Members of our Faith Community, Advent Greetings! Currently, 18 of our 24 Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Birmingham are receiving Tuition Assistance from the State of Alabama, which for this school year totals $3,722,000! This amount and more will be available to fund Catholic education in the next school year if you re-direct up to 50% of your State Income Taxes to the organization, Scholarships for Kids. This does not involve making a donation; rather it involves directing half of your expected 2016 State Income Tax payment to Scholarships for Kids, and directing the other half to the State of Alabama. This must be done before the end of this calendar year for the money to be used next year. I encourage each of you to consider visiting the web site: scholarshipsforkids.org to watch a brief instructional video on how to set up an account so that you can re-direct 1/2 of your State Income Tax payment to be used for Catholic Education. The process only takes a matter of minutes. Remember, I am not asking you to make a donation. I am simply asking you to re-direct the dollars you would otherwise send to Montgomery to pay your State Income Tax. These monies will be re-directed to the Scholarship for Kids fund so that many needy Alabama children will be able to receive a quality Catholic education. Please note on your check the Catholic school you prefer to receive your tax dollars. Thank you for your attention regarding this very important matter. May God bless you and your families throughout the holy Seasons of Advent and Christmas. Yours in Christ, Bishop Robert J. Baker Bishop of Birmingham in Alabama

New Outdoor Statue of Our Lady of

Guadalupe coming soon.

Through our discernment process we are looking for ways to clearly show our welcoming of our Hispanic sisters and brothers. We are very excited that a pedestal and a new statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be installed soon, thanks to the sponsorship of our Hispanic parishioners. It will be placed within the suggested future bell tower across from the mailboxes.

Let us celebrate with joy!

Celebrating Our lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in Mexico as the pregnant Mother of God to St. Juan Diego, an Aztec Indian, on December 9, 10, and 12, 1531. Our Lady came to offer faith, hope, and consolation to the oppressed natives of Mexico and to reconcile them with their Spanish rulers. She put an end to the bloody human sacrifice of the Aztecs and converted nine million natives in the next nine years!

On Dec. 9, 1531, Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego and asked him to go to the Bishop with a request to build a church for Her on the barren hill of Tepeyac, which is now part of Mexico City. The Bishop asked for a sign, which Our Lady promised to give to the Bishop.

On Dec. 12, Our Lady again appeared to Juan on Tepeyac Hill and told him to pick the Castilian roses which miraculously appeared there and to bring them to the Bishop as the sign for him to believe her request. Juan gathered the roses into his tilma and brought them to the Bishop.

He opened the tilma to show the flowers to the Bishop and, to the astonishment of all present, the Image of Our Lady appeared on the tilma. the Bishop then built the church on Tepeyac Hill as Our Lady had requested. Human sacrifice ended in Mexico forever. Our lady of Guadalupe, which means River of Light in Spanish and She Who Crushes the Serpent in the Indian language, brought the light of the Catholic faith, crushed the false gods of Mexico, and established an era of peace.

Pope John Paul II said, “I feel drawn to this picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe because her face is full of kindness and simplicity, it calls me.” He entrusted the cause of our life to Our Lady of Guadalupe’s loving protection, and placed under her motherly care the innocent lives of children, especially those who are in danger of not being born.

With Gratitude

Thank you for your generous donations to the Committee on Church Cooperation (CCC) Food Drive this past November. Every Monday during the month we sent a truck load of groceries to help feed the less fortunate in our county. Thank you also for your generous response to the Angel Tree. We will be supplying the Toy Store with many items to help less fortunate families help their children, especially teens, have a merry Christmas and hope for the New Year. We lack storage space on our campus and would appreciate it if you would not drop off clothing, books, or other items at the church, unless we make a special request; instead please donate them to the CCC.

A woman's right to "choose"?

The word "choice" (as used on the subject of abortion) is probably the most misleading

and deceptive term in the English language.

While it might sound good to say that government should allow people to make all

their own choices, that is neither practical nor desirable. Some choices are crimes. All

crimes are choices.

Once a woman is pregnant, barring a miscarriage or an induced abortion, she will

have a baby. Therefore, her only "choice" is, "How is the baby going to come out?"

Will he or she come out alive and crying, or dead and in pieces? Truly, her choice is

between life and death---a live baby, or a dead one.

Consider this hypothetical situation. A group of young men have just started a "Right

to Rape" organization. They argue that they have the right to choose to rape women.

The real question, they tell us, is, "Who decides, us or the government? We believe

that the government should stay out of this very private matter." Furthermore, they

want the state to set up tax-funded centers where they can rape women in a safe,

legal fashion.

Clearly, our response would be, "Absolutely not; rape is wrong!"

Note carefully that the real and overriding question is not, "who decides" but a

question about the action itself. We must first ask ourselves, "Is rape right or wrong?"

Only then can we answer the question of who has the right to choose to do it.

And so it is with abortion. No one should have the "right to choose" abortion because it

involves taking the life of a separate, innocent human being and is therefore an

atrocity.

FINANCIAL REPORT: December 11, 2016 La Ofrenda de la Semana 11 Diciembre 2016

It’s hard to believe, but the holidays will be here before we know it. Start stocking up on SCRIP gift cards for your gift giving needs!

SCRIP cards are regular gift cards, just like the ones you can buy at the store, but you help St. Ann School when you purchase them at the SCRIP table after each Mass or in the Parish Office during the week. St. Ann School is able to buy the cards at varying merchant discounts and then sell them to you at face value. Some cards earn as high as 18% return for the school. We carry many major retailers, restaurants, groceries and gas. For a complete list of merchants we can order from, see: www.shopwithscrip.com and scroll to the bottom for a complete retailer list. We can order any of the cards listed. Thank you for supporting our school.

(Scholarships for Kids).

de doctrina para jóvenes los domingos. 3. Hablar con el padre o el diácono para fijar la fecha;
