prayers. He fell in his room and suffered a fractured pel-vis. He went to the hospital for treatment and was recently admitted to the Manor Care facility located in Whitehall for rehabilitation. Cards and visitors are welcome. The address is 505 Weyman Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15236.

YOUTH MINISTRY will be on winter break, December

29th, and January 5th. We will be back in session, January 12th.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! There will be a Youth Lock-

in, January 18th, MLK weekend. The theme is Love Thy #Selfie! Volunteers needed - connect with the awesome youth of our parish by assisting with the Lock-in. If interest-ed, please contact Becca, [email protected]

HAITI CHRISTMAS CARD AVAILABLE AFTER MASSES The clean water program in Medor began in 2006, when OLQP arranged for a volunteer hydrologist to assess Medor's water sources only to find it tested positive for fecal bacteria. The Klorfasil clean water program alleviates water contamination and improves health. Families receive a five-gallon bucket with a spigot and a container of bleach powder. Thirty minutes after adding the bleach, the water is free of bacteria! Each family pays a small amount; OLQP provides the funds for the bucket systems. Thanks for your help to enable Medor to have clean water. The Haiti Christ-mas Card program supports the work we share with our Medor family. Cards are available after each Mass. On-line donations can be made at: ourladyqueenofpeace.org/donate (click on Donate > Haiti-St. Joseph's Parish, Medor and then complete the transaction).

PLAN AHEAD -- PARISH OFFICES CLOSED DEC 24 – JAN 1 - All parish and ministry activity is cancelled from

Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day. Daily Mass will con-tinue as usual. The office will not publish a parish bulletin the weekend of December 28-29. Bulletin Deadline for Epiphany (Jan 4-5) is Thursday, January 2, 9am. Please con-tact Christina with any questions: [email protected]

ECO-TIP: Jesus came to earth to save us. What can we do

to help save our earth? Have a blessed and "Green" Christ-mas.

THE GIVING TREE – Support SEEC Day Laborers! We invite

you to support the parish in providing lunch for 35 SEEC day labors. Each week a group of volunteers shop, prepare and package lunches for Shirlington Day Laborers through the Brown Bag Lunch Program. The Giving Tree supports this effort: take a ‘brown bag angel’ ornament from the basket under the giving tree in the sanctuary, place your donation inside the ornament and hang it on the tree. The tree will be in the sanctuary through the Christmas season.

CALLING JUSTICE ADVOCATES to join us Wednesday, Janu-

ary 22 at the annual Advocacy Day in Richmond organized by the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy. Bus provided from northern VA; register now: www.virginiainterfaithcenter.org

¡EL ÁRBOL GENEROSO Apoye a los jornaleros de SEEC! Invita-

Inscrí-base ahora: www.virginiainterfaithcenter.org

JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… This is the time of year when it seems that everyone sings of peace on earth and good will toward

all! Pope Paul VI proclaimed that if we want peace we need to work for justice. In this season of dreams of peace and good will…we are called to work for justice! Advent is a strange season…a season of hopes and dreams…a season of promises fulfilled and of promises yet to be fulfilled…a season of the Reign of God, that which is bursting forth and at the same time not yet fully here. Advent is counter cultur-al on so many levels…in a season when it seems the whole world begins to spin ever faster we are called to slow down…to spend time in prayer and reflection…to spend time thinking about the deeper realities of our lives. Part of this season’s story is about a young girl living in a male dominated world where women were treated as property, but she breaks free from the bonds of obscurity and insignificance and becomes the heroine. A young girl named Mary said “yes” to an impossible proposition…”yes” to what must have seemed totally absurd. Imagine yourself in Mary’s place…a heavenly visitor telling you that God her/himself, The Creator of all things…visible and invisi-ble…was “asking” her to be the mother of the long awaited Messiah. The whole idea that God would choose to become human, one like us, and enter into our world as a vulnerable and innocent child is almost too much to comprehend. And yet she said “yes”…and her yes changed the world forever! To this very day…right now…her yes is still changing the world because the Risen Christ is in our midst! Be-cause of her yes we can profess “we are the Body of Christ!” What is God calling me to say yes to as a member of the Body of Christ? Am I willing to risk, like Mary, and say “yes” to God not knowing where it will lead me…just trusting that God will walk with me on the jour-ney? As I say yes to God, who am I being called to journey with? Advent Blessings, Fr Tim

JUST$ Giant and Safeway cards will be available this weekend for

your Christmas shopping or to donate to the OLQP Food Pantry or someone in need. Just$ cards will not be available the weekend of December 28/29. On behalf of all the Just$ volunteers, I wish all supporters of Just$ a holy and happy Christmas to all.

THE ADVOCATE Fall 2019 Issue is on the parish website

(olqpva.org > parish bulletin > OLQP Newsletter). If you would like The Advocate emailed or sent USPS, please send a message to Jeannette in the parish office: [email protected].

HELP REPEAL THE DEATH PENALTY -- Virginians for Alterna-

tives to the Death Penalty (VADP) will be introducing death penal-ty repeal legislation in the general assembly. Virginia has executed over 1,300 people, and, as Pope Francis has recognized, it is past time for this to end. Killing is a sin, and the process is racist, classist, too expensive, does not deter crime, and risks innocent lives. You can support this effort by calling your legislator and sending your name, zip code and email to Dale Brumfield at [email protected] for inclusion on the VADP mailing list. Thanks!

SHARE YOUR VEGETARIAN RECIPES The Integrity of Creation Team is collecting vegetarian recipes from parishioners to encourage healthy and eco-friendly meals during Lent. Send your favorite tasty and easy-to-make recipes to Gabi Weber ([email protected]).

MINKISI MINISTRY invites you to their New Year’s scripture

prayer session at 7:00 pm, Mon., Jan. 6, in the Discussion Room/Parish Office. Cecilia Braveboy will lead the meditation on James 3:13-16. For more info, contact Cecilia at [email protected] or phone 703-979-5389.

Christmas, 2019

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Psalm at Mass on Christmas proclaims: "A light will

shine on us this day: the Lord is born for us!" It is this truth

that fills us with joyful hope even in the midst of the dark-

ness we experience. There is no reason to despair. The

Light has conquered the darkness! Our call is to allow this

Light to guide us as we strive daily to grow in holiness,

faithfulness and integrity.

We are also sent forth each day to radiate the presence of

Christ to others. We do so by loving all people without ex-

ception, by forgiving those who have offended us and by

sacrificially and generously serving those in most need.

Each year we hear the timeless story of the three wise men

who set out on a long journey with only a star to guide

their way. What tremendous trust they must have had in

God, not to know where they were going, but to obey hum-

bly and do as they were asked. What a powerful witness for

each of us. May we follow God's call in our life with trust

and obedience, so that at the end of our journey here on

earth, we may embrace Jesus Christ, the Lord of Lords, the

King of Kings.

It is my hope and prayer that during this Christmas season

and into the New Year, we place our relationship with the

Lord as our highest priority and remain instruments of His

peace, joy and light in our parishes, homes, workplaces and

communities.

The Lord is born for us! May He fill you with abundant

blessings this Christmas and always. Merry Christmas to

one and all!

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge

Bishop of Arlington

Cristo a otras personas.

Monsenor Michael F. Burbidge

Obispo de Arlington
