My Background
• 19 years in Healthcare IT – first 10 as consultant, last nine as CIO
• Consulting career started with “Big 6” – Andersen Consulting (Accenture), and Ernst and Young• Exposure to many types of engagements
• And many types of organizations
• And many types of executives
• CIO career at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach• Major system implementations, most notably Epic

What I Liked About Consulting
• Fast-paced, energetic, “thrill of the deadline”
• Surrounded by young, smart, diverse people (mentoring opportunities)
• Agile and dynamic teams
• Immediate access to experts/knowledge/methods/samples
• Working firsthand with many/different organizations and executives
• Having finger on the pulse of many organizations/trends (“expert”)
• (Glamorous travel and expense budget is a myth!)
Webex Support 1-866-223-3239Event # 660 936 559
What I like About My Current Position
• Experience full lifecycle of projects – plan, implement, maintain, “ownership”
• Final authority, decision-maker
• Long-term team-building, long-term relationships
• Continuity of resources (for the most part)
• At the executive table every day – living it, not studying it
• Depth of knowledge
• Better life balance
Webex Support 1-866-223-3239Event # 660 936 559
I Don’t Miss…
• Sales quotas, utilization goals
• Difficult clients
• Airports, rental cars, and travel delays
• Spending more time in hotels than home
• Recommender only, not decision-maker
• Not having direct ownership in solution recommendations or subsequent implementations
Webex Support 1-866-223-3239Event # 660 936 559
What Makes a Good Consultant…
• Credibility (previous CIO experience)
• Ability to sell to, and close, senior executives
• Tell it like it is, take it like it is
• Can deal with uncertainty and change (routines difficult)
• Comfortable being the expert, speaking, presenting
• Timing is right in your life
Webex Support 1-866-223-3239Event # 660 936 559
Final Thoughts
• Qualities of a good consultant are the same things that make a good CIO
• For me, I found that I can enhance my CIO role by infusing consultant-like values
