Ruth Stone
Life Sciences Executive Recruiter
MD, NewSearch Life Sciences Ltd
As an executive recruiter, I work with some of the most respected companies in the life
sciences industry, helping them to find and hire key talent.
Observing the careers of many individuals as they have grown into senior leadership
roles I believe that in addition to innate ability, there are certain behaviours which can
accelerate career development and equip individuals for senior roles. These
behaviours are not inherently male or female; however, in many cases they do come
more naturally to many men, either because of confidence or social conditioning.
By being conscious of these behaviours and putting them into practice, I hope that you
you can help your career development.

Where are we now?
- Women currently represent 40% of all employees across our industry.
- Of the top 100 pharma companies by revenue, women represent only
11% of total board members. ( Scrip Leadership survey)
- But .. the life sciences industry is changing….there are many more
women in Director and VP roles than there were even five years ago,
and I hope that this will feed into Board representation in due course.
What behaviours across both genders lead to career success?

The 7 Leadership Behaviours for
Career Success
1. Have a career plan
2. Be brave and take a few risks
3. “Toot your horn”!
4. Up your visibility internally and externally
5. Learn to love politics, it’s just how things get done in
organisations
6. Build your networks and ask for favours
7. You’ve got to have DRIVE!
![Page 5: “HBA and business networking”€¦ · HBA UK Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Networking Event, 6th March 2014 All Bar One, Windsor. 2 Ruth Stone Life Sciences Executive](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051512/60393cf4f1d63a521214b47e/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
5
– Have a clear vision of where you want to go in your career,
what you want to do next, and the skills and experiences you
need to accumulate to do so
– Regularly articulate what you want to do next to your managers
and colleagues (it helps it become real)
– Ask for their help and guidance for how to get there
– Self knowledge is important element - understand your
strengths, improvement areas and personality type- you can
then set about filling in the gaps.
1. Have a career plan (it doesn’t
matter if it changes!)
![Page 6: “HBA and business networking”€¦ · HBA UK Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Networking Event, 6th March 2014 All Bar One, Windsor. 2 Ruth Stone Life Sciences Executive](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051512/60393cf4f1d63a521214b47e/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
6
- We must have more confidence in our abilities rather than
focussing on the skills/experience we don’t have for a new
position
- Just do it…. Give that talk, take on a stretch project, don’t
shy away from things that make you nervous
2. Be brave and take a few risks
![Page 7: “HBA and business networking”€¦ · HBA UK Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Networking Event, 6th March 2014 All Bar One, Windsor. 2 Ruth Stone Life Sciences Executive](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051512/60393cf4f1d63a521214b47e/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
7
3. “Toot your horn a bit”!
– Take some credit where its due; don’t attribute all of your
success to others
– Be clear on YOUR personal contribution to a project or role
– Keep a log of what you achieve- what role did you personally
play in that positive outcome? (if you’re not sure what, ask your
line manager for input!)
![Page 8: “HBA and business networking”€¦ · HBA UK Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Networking Event, 6th March 2014 All Bar One, Windsor. 2 Ruth Stone Life Sciences Executive](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051512/60393cf4f1d63a521214b47e/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
8
- Think about how you can build awareness of who you
are, your strengths and experience- both inside your
current organisation and across your external networks
- Write articles, give talks, join networking organisations
- Don’t be afraid to move companies to progress (women
tend to stay in one organisation for longer and moving
can really accelerate your learning, progress and
earnings.
4. Up your visibility inside your organisation –
and beyond
![Page 9: “HBA and business networking”€¦ · HBA UK Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Networking Event, 6th March 2014 All Bar One, Windsor. 2 Ruth Stone Life Sciences Executive](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051512/60393cf4f1d63a521214b47e/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
9
- Think of politics as how organisations work; the interaction
between teams, leaders, understand where the power lies.
- We do not live in a perfect meritocracy- it’s just not possible
to get to a senior role without being able to objectively
navigate the politics in an organisation
- Watch and learn from colleagues who are good at this…
5. Learn to love politics
![Page 10: “HBA and business networking”€¦ · HBA UK Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Networking Event, 6th March 2014 All Bar One, Windsor. 2 Ruth Stone Life Sciences Executive](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051512/60393cf4f1d63a521214b47e/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
10
- Be interested in others’ roles and objectives and try
to help them when you can. Don’t be afraid to ask for
favours when you need them
- Don’t settle for a few deep, close work friendships,
build wider networks
6. Build your network- and use it
![Page 11: “HBA and business networking”€¦ · HBA UK Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Networking Event, 6th March 2014 All Bar One, Windsor. 2 Ruth Stone Life Sciences Executive](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051512/60393cf4f1d63a521214b47e/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
11
– Believe in yourself
– Energy
– Resilience
– This is nothing short of essential for career success
7. You’ve got to have DRIVE!
