T he winter months
have been an
exciting time for
the I Team. We have just
concluded our suspenseful
vote and ……………… I
TEAM DRAGONS WINS!!!!!
(Pictured to the left is the
winning graphic, GREAT JOB
JADE!) All of the artwork and student designs were
phenomenal. A large shout-out goes to the I Team
parents, as our holiday cookie party was a huge
success. The cookies and other refreshments were
delicious! An important date to mark on your
calendar is April 20th – I Team Chicken BBQ
Fundraiser. Information about this exciting event
will be distributed closer to this date.
I n Math class we just finished up learning skills
needed to make computing fractions easier.
We can calculate GCF (greatest common
factor) and LCM (least common multiple) and use
divisibility rules to reduce fractions to simplest
form. Currently we are adding, subtracting,
multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed
numbers. Your child should also be able to convert
from fractions to decimals to percents with ease
very soon. Please continue to practice basic facts.
Your child will take a timed test each week on one
of the operations which he/she has not yet
mastered. Thank you for supporting your child by
helping them learn these most needed skills.
I n Mr. Campbell’s classroom we have just
finished up investigating microscopic
organisms. Now we will move onto things
that we are able to see: Plants & Animals. As we
study each, we will learn about the life processes of
each, behaviors, and necessary features. When we
reach the portion of the year pertaining to Animals,
we will encounter a wide array of organisms such as
Arthropods, Amphibians, Monotremes, and many
more. After concluding units about Plants and
Animals, we will learn how each are related and
their impact upon our fragile environment.
I n reading class, I-Team readers have been
busily FLIRTing with stories and books. We
wrapped up the book, Crash, by utilizing the
reciprocal teaching strategies of predicting,
clarifying, summarizing, and questioning. We have
been focusing on the T in FLIRT which is text
structure which helps us to understand how stories
are organized and how to make graphic organizers
for open ended responses. We are currently
practicing reading strategies that help us to more
efficiently read our science and social studies
textbooks and utilize test taking strategies that
will help us to study for all classes. In February, we
are further delving into the importance of
nonfiction literature and will do a thorough
author's study of Gary Paulsen. We will also be
reading Paulsen's novel, Harris and Me. It is a
hilarious account of Paulsen's troubled childhood
and the summer he spends with his cousin on a
farm. It is always a favorite pick among 6th
graders!
In Mr. Weaver’s classroom, I-Teamers just
finished Latin America. Students will be learning
about Europe and it’s rich culture. A research
report on a country in the Eastern hemisphere will
be co-taught with the English department as we
move further into the new year.

We have a new addition to the N-Team! It is not a student, but a student teacher! Her name is Mrs. Breann Zerbe. She is teaching Math with Ms. Sherrer. We interviewed Mrs. Zerbe so everyone can get to know her!
How do you like it here? ‘’I like it here a lot. I enjoy Mrs. Sherrer and all the other teachers are very nice. The kids were very excited to meet me, and I was excited to meet them.“ Tell us about yourself? “I grew up in California, and I was born in Santa Clarita. I played basketball in high school. My favorite subject was and still is Math. I went to college at BYU - Idaho for secondary Math.” What are some of your hobbies? ‘’I like basketball and running. I ran 2 half marathons. I love to sew and go backpacking, finally I like to scrapbook.” What grade would you prefer to teach? “I really like 6th grade, but I would teach any grade between 6th - 10th.”
Do you plan to teach math as far as a career? “Yes, but I have a Health minor so I could also teach Health.” What got you into teaching? ‘’I did a lot of tutoring. I tutored all ages, also there are a lot of teachers in my family.’’ How has Ms. Sherrer helped you expand your education in teaching? ‘’She has given me a lot of hands-on experience. She is also very knowledgeable. She teaches me things you can’t learn out of a book.’’ Where do you see yourself in 2 years? As she started giggling,’’ Hopefully teaching!’’ Do you like working with this group of teachers? ‘’Yes, I think that they are very nice.’’ Would you like to work with a group like this in the future? ‘’Yes, I can see the teachers care about the kids so yes, that would be great!’’ So as you can see, Mrs. Zerbe is a wonderful
addition to the N-Team. We wish her lots of
success in her future educational endeavors. We
are very happy that she has become the newest
member of the N-Team!

7th grade is excited to begin our 12th
year of Penny Wars! Since 1999,
the 7th grade has raised over
$17,000 for the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society through a
friendly competition we call the
Penny Wars. Here is how it works:
Every student is encouraged to help
their classroom gain points. A point
is a penny, for each penny a student
contributes to their first period’s
bucket; that classroom gets a point. However, for every silver coin placed
in a bucket by someone from another first period, that classroom loses the
value of that coin. (Example: a nickel is minus five points)
REMEMBER: PENNIES = GOOD
SILVER = BAD
Students need to bring in pennies for their own first period class and silver
for the other classes. Penny Wars will take place from February 4th – 22nd.
The winning first period gets a catered Olive Garden lunch and bragging
rights! The H team will need to watch out for defending champion Mr.
Hess - he has a few tricks up his sleeve! The G team will have to watch
out for defending champion Ms. Luckenbaugh - the quiet ones sometimes
fly under the radar!

News Update from the 8th grade
The 8th grade began the second semester with a few schedule changes.
S and T teams reversed their semester classes, meaning that S had to say
goodbye to Reading and World Language. T finished up with Health
and Keyboarding classes.
The 8th grade is now settling in to their “new” classes. S team is
practicing good keyboarding skills along with learning word
processing tools to format letters and memos. The Health class
curriculum includes the topics of health and wellness, nutrition
and eating disorders, substance abuse, and body systems.
The T team is beginning their study of French and Spanish
conversational vocabulary and culture. (There may even be a small
scale Mardi Gras celebration in the works!) In Reading class, the
students will be reading short stories and writing poetry.
Science classes have been studying the planets and are now experts in
the phases of the moon and the seasons.
In History classes, the colonists are experiencing some
hardships as they are now being taxed unfairly. The situation is beginning
to escalate, and a revolution is possible.
English classes are actively working on mastering the writing process
and improving their style through the use of descriptive phrases.
Math classes are slipping through the study of slope,
as they prepare for the upcoming PSSA tests. Algebra classes are
directly working with slope, and pre-Algebra classes are learning it
through a study of geometry.

How does alcohol affect the body?
By Julia Atwater
T oday in health class we discussed the effects of alcohol on the
human body. Did you know that alcohol dulls the senses,
decreases reaction time, and majorly influences coordination?
After learning about how alcohol impairs individuals, we simulated these
effects by using fatal vision goggles and gloves. Under this simulation,
everyday tasks that are normally easy became quite difficult.
S imple skills
like tying a
shoe,
writing, walking, and throwing and
catching a ball under this 'influence'
became just a bit more challenging.
Imagine fumbling clumsily while trying to
tie your shoe or having to form a death grip
on your friend just to walk. Dizzy, distorted, and clumsy are all fantastic words to describe
how the participants in today's activities might've felt. Some of the groups noticed that their
vision was off by up to several inches to the left or right while trying to throw a ball at a target.
Walking seems easy and uncomplicated but with distorted vision and a straight line swerving
in front of you, you start to wobble and stumble quite a lot. Writing becomes a scary,
awkward alphabet much different than the
one we know. Since vision is affected and fine
motor skills cause fumbling hands, writing
turns into a much more challenging activity
than it should be.
I n conclusion, alcohol is NOT a good
substance to put through your system,
because, well, fumbling around,
tripping and being half blind doesn't sound
particularly fun. So, consider this: If these
simple skills seem so hard under the influence
of alcohol, how hard will driving or making
vital decisions be?

Welcome Miss Keefer!
T he K-team would like to welcome our newest member, Miss Christine Keefer. Miss Keefer graduated from Millersville University in December 2010 and currently lives in Southern Lancaster County. She has taught piano lessons privately for 7 years and has played in
the Eastern York High School Pit Orchestra since 2008. We are delighted to have her on our team and as part of our music staff. Welcome to EYMS Miss Keefer!
Music Minutes
C urrently, 6th grade general music classes are learning about the music of the Civil War. The students are connecting historical events and seeing how these events and the thoughts and feelings of a time period influence its music. From this era they have sung spirituals like ‚Now Let Them Fly‛, underground railroad songs like ‚Follow the Drinking Gourd‛, songs of soldiers like
‚Dixie Land‛, and Julia Howe’s ‚Battle Hymn of the Republic.‛ Next, they will they study music pertaining to the Civil Rights’ Movement.
8th grade general music classes have been working on Piano Keyboarding, and are building a repertoire of songs they can perform, with their favorite being ‚Jingle Bells.‛
Our instrumental ensembles continue to work hard preparing music
for their upcoming performances. Mr. Donahue has been keeping our Jazz Band ‘swinging’ as they rehearse songs such as ‚Cantalope Island‛ and ‚Vehicle‛ every Tuesday after school.
Our orchestra students are preparing for our 4th Annual Eastern York
String Day. This district wide festival for string students in grades 3-12 will be held on Saturday, March 23rd. At this festival, middle school students will have the opportunity to play selections from their concert pieces and to mentor younger string students in our district. Additionally, four new students have joined our orchestra program this semester. We are delighted to have Maddie Askey, Laurel Flaharty, Hannah Franz, and Cassandra Hague as our newest orchestra members.
6 middle school instrumental students (5 students from band,1 from Orchestra) are participating in
this year's York County Band Festival. The students are Travis Allen, Brayden Danks, Taryn Kelly, Sarah Stickler, Ethan Quiones, and Tanner Williams.
Hoops for Heart
I n December the students in Physical Education and Wellness classes participated in a three day "Hoops for Heart" event. They raised $560.00 for the American Heart Association. Melanie
Schaefer, 8th grade, was the top fund raiser. She collected $71.00 for the event. Way to go Melanie!! A big THANK YOU to everyone who supported a student with a donation to this very important cause. This is EYMS's 7th year participating in Hoops for Heart!

When your child is being picked up early from
school, your wait time in the school office can be
decreased if you send a note with the student in
the morning. The note should indicate who will
pick them up and what time they are
leaving. When they bring a note to the office
upon their arrival to school, we will issue a pass
for them to leave class and be in the office
waiting when you arrive. Hopefully this can
streamline the process for you and for us.
We have been noticing a large number of
students who have not been turning in excuse
cards or Doctor's notes. As a result, students are
charged with an illegal absence. After 3 illegal
absences parents receive a first notice letter and
after subsequent illegal absences, fines are
assessed. Please talk with your child about the
importance of handing in their excuse within 3
school days of any absence to avoid being
marked illegally absent.
Don’t forget to check
your child’s grades and
assignments online at http://www.easternyork.com/
The Giant Program is a cash back to schools for patrons who place their Giant Bonus Club
number into their computer system.
A certain percentage of everything you spend then would come back to the school in the form of
a check in April.
A patron can designate up to 2 different schools. If they do that; the percentage is split between
the schools. Actually it is FREE money for schools.
Go to www.GiantAPlus.com or www.Giant.com to learn more. Be sure to visit this site often to view
program updates and to track your school’s A+
School Rewards progress.
The Middle School number for the Giant Program is 00690.
