Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Key to the success of any country's health services is the skill base within the health sector. There is a worldwide shortage of qualied
physicians and nurses, and these sought-after professionals are increasingly leaving their native lands to pursue better career opportunities
abroad. Countries that have acknowledged the shortfall in medical personnel and the attendant health challenges and implications might
nd it useful to identify their current and anticipated human resource needs within the health sector and to collaborate with the education
and training sectors to ensure that sufcient numbers of qualied health professionals are available to meet domestic demand. Planners
must identify strategies for attracting and retaining doctors and nurses. It is essential that the changing age prole of a country be taken into
account when evaluating the potential for producing sufcient numbers of clinicians and other professionals to meet evolving health service
needs.
In many countries, geriatrics and care approaches for older persons are not well developed. Clinical staffs often lack specic knowledge of
age-related health issues and the expertise necessary for optimal service provision. A number of universities and training institutions have
introduced geriatrics and gerontology into their medical and academic programmes, but much remains to be done to build the essential
foundations for effective elder care.
