Welcome to INSTINCTS
May 2015 Vol 5:2
“The newsletter helping you follow your Wild Instincts.”
Baby Season At the time of this writing we have 37 baby squirrels. Yep. That’s just squirrels.
Add baby bear, bunnies, raccoons, birds and we have Baby Season!
There was a cluster of tree trimming activities in late April which resulted in litter after litter of squirrels being admitted when
their nest trees were cut down.
Three five-day old flying squirrels were admitted after their
nest tree was cut down.
This litter of raccoons were found in a plastic bucket left by
the side of the road.
This litter of raccoons was found in a cardboard box in the
woods. Their eyes were still closed.
We also had a number of raccoon litters that were obviously taken by humans and
left to “let nature take its course”. Thankfully, other humans found them and brought them to us!

Jefferson Award
We are thrilled to announce our very own Mark Naniot was Marshfield Clinic and Newsline 9 Jefferson Awards winner for May
2015. There is a 13 member committee that chooses recipients. This is a big deal!!! It was quite a surprise to us and we are
humbled and honored Mark was recognized for all his hard work and the work of Wild
Instincts. Thank you to Marshfield Clinic and Newsline 9.

More Bats We have mentioned bats and their current situation in the last few newsletters. White-
nose Syndrome has put cave bats on the threatened and endangered lists. White-
nose syndrome in Wisconsin has spread from an initial infestation in Grant County last year to four more counties announced
by the WDNR just last week. Not only has it been found in the southwestern part of the state, it’s also
been found in Door County in the northeastern part of Wisconsin and the
fungus that causes the disease has been found in caves in Iowa, Dodge and Lafayette counties.
White-nose syndrome has killed more than 5.7 million bats in eastern North America.
Bats pollinate, disperse seeds and consume massive quantities of insects so this disease
is of huge concern. As part of the research into bats and White-
nose syndrome in Wisconsin, all the bats we overwintered were banded before their release.

Culver’s Share Night
Come on down to Culver’s in Rhinelander on Wednesday, June 17 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Some of the supporters and staff from Wild Instincts will be greeting guests and delivering food orders.
Ruby will also be visiting with guests on the outside patio.
Part of the sales for that time frame will donated to Wild Instincts. The more people that come down, the more proceeds Wild
Instincts will receive. Not that you needed another reason to
enjoy Culver’s wide variety of delicious food and custard, but supporting Wild Instincts should be a perfect one!

WANTED: Fish and Venison We generally get most of our fish from ice
anglers over the winter. The last two consecutive winters were not conducive for
lots of ice fishing. This has left us with a deficit of fish. Add to that an influx of patients that eat
fish and viola, we are DESPERATE for fish. Whole fish is wonderful. Frozen fish, too. This is a wonderful excuse to have the
enjoyment of going fishing without having the work of cleaning them.
Get out and fish for a wild patient! In addition, if you are looking for space in your freezer, we are extremely low on
venison!
Share the Road We’re getting to the time of year in the Northwoods when animals and their young
are starting to move about. Many wildlife parents are having to range
farther to find food for themselves or their young. They will likely be crossing the road. Remember if you hit an adult animal with
your car at this time of year, you may be also killing the young that depend on it. If you kill an adult female mammal who is
nursing, most likely her young, who isn’t even with her, will die as a collateral victim.
Turtles are also moving along and across roadways to lay their eggs; hitting a female turtle will wipe out her entire clutch with
her.
Three turtles that have been hit by cars.
Slow down. Be aware of what is near the shoulders of the roadway. Pay attention to
your driving, especially near dawn and dusk, when many animals are most active.
If you can’t avoid hitting a wild animal on the road or see someone else hit and run, here are some tips to help:
1. Keep yourself safe first. Pull your car
to the shoulder and turn on your
blinkers. Do not run out into traffic. 2. Observe the animal from a safe
distance first. Approaching too quickly can scare the animal, often back into traffic, making matters
worse. 3. If it is something small like a rabbit
or turtle you can safely retrieve, get it to us ASAP.
4. If it is an eagle, fox, deer or other
mammal, use your cellphone to call us for specific instructions. Put our
number in your phone so we are on speed dial. 715-362-9453
5. Spread the word to watch for wildlife
on the roadways
Bratwurst for Bunnies?
Those of you who shop at local Trig’s grocery stores will be happy to know it is
now possible for 3% of your purchases to go to Wild Instincts. Trig’s recently announced their new Scrip
program. This program replaces placing your receipts in a bin designated for your
favorite charity. Trig’s will now provide us gift cards to sell to you.
They are available in $50 and $100 amounts and are valid in any of Trig’s five locations.
We will have a few on hand to start as a trial basis. If you’d like to order some,
please give us 48-72 hours to process. Those of you in areas other than Rhinelander, we’d be happy to mail them to
you, however, we would need payment by check in advance. No credit card or online

payments with this program or it would defeat the fundraising aspect.
By using the shopping cards you purchase from us, you’ll be helping provide care for
owls when you purchase those olives. You’re going to buy groceries anyway, why not feed your wild side as well?
Great Horned Owl vs Leghold Trap
We were called the day before Mother’s Day
regarding a Great Horned Owl. They noticed it because when it flew they could hear a
metal chain clanking. He couldn’t fly very high or for very far. He had a #2 leghold trap on his right leg.
Great horned owl young are still being tended to by their parents. Even though this
bird is a male, he would still be hunting extra to help feed the pair’s young. We have no way of knowing if this owl has
a mate for sure, but it is very likely he does. Now the young are at a disadvantage
because one parent is no longer able to provide for the family.
Wounds are healing.

His wounds are healing and he appears to have full use of his foot. We won’t know for
a week or so yet what the outcome of his injury will be. We are guardedly optimistic
he will recover enough to be released.

Don’t Do It! For the first 6 weeks of life, fawns don’t
travel with mom much, but rather just lie still in the vegetation. Their lack of scent
and spotted camouflage protects them from animal predators, but not from HUMAN predators.
People see something so tiny and helpless looking and feel compelled to step in and help.
PLEASE, if you see a fawn you think may be in trouble. CALL US FIRST for instructions.
We can help you determine if it really is in trouble or if it’s doing what is supposed to do.
Don’t be a kidnapper. The best place for a young one is with its
mom.
