Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church & Shrine Mission Statement

Our Lady of Peace is a church and shrine dedicated to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls. It is a place of prayer & pilgrimage with: • Perpetual adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament • Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary • Frequent celebration of the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Rec-onciliation • Integrated formation of the person (spiritual, moral, intellectual and emotional)

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

A Prayer for Ash Wednesday Gracious God, today begins a period of inner reflection and ex-

amination. The days stretch before me and invite me inward to that si-lent, holy space that holds your Spirit. This special time beckons me to see my life through Christ's eyes and the truth and reality of your love incarnate. Give me the grace to enter the space of these days with antic-ipation of our meeting. And, when I open my soul to your presence, let your loving kindness flow over me and seep into the pockets of my heart. I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen

Dear Friends, In continuation from last week’s little column, we may ask: is a spirit of disbelief due to the possibility that the majority of Christians do not know who they are? Might it be the milieu of our current culture, handicapped by a relativistic world-view, that limits or distorts our understanding of human nature and grace? Moral relativism is the philosophical theory which says that morality is relative, subjective; it depends on me. Moral relativism states that different moral truths could be sustained by different people. It comes in two forms: ethical subjectivism and cultural relativism. Ethical subjectivism holds that morality is relative to individuals; cultural relativism holds that it is relative to culture. Both deny the existence of moral absolutes, of objective moral truths that hold for all people in all places at all times. If grace perfects or elevates nature, we must understand what it means to be human if we are to act in a human way, and then in a Christian way. Are we a conglomerate of cells, processes, nexuses of nerves, and genetic codes that are as programmable and/or predictable as any other material piece of machinery? This would be the view that many hold today, regarding scientific materialism. This view of man denies the existence of any immaterial realities (spiritual soul), or at least disregards them because a soul is not something subject to scientific evaluation. Or as human beings, do we amount to nothing more than consciousness? Are we reducible to what we feel from the inside, regardless of what the material world around me may dictate? Or are we somewhere in between? This may be said to be the position of St. Thomas Aquinas and that of the Church. “The human person, created in the image of God, is a being at once corporeal and spiritual.” (CCC 362) The Church also teaches that “every spiritual soul is created immediately by God - it is not “produced” by the parents - and also that it is immortal: it does not perish when it separates from the body at death, and it will be reunited with the body at the final Resurrection.” (CCC 366) Christ didn’t accept moral relativism, on the contrary he said, I am the Truth and he was crucified because of this. Pilate said “Then, you are a king? Jesus answered, ‘You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’” Why are all of these things worth our consideration? Well, Catholic writer, Frank Sheed once said, “if a man doesn’t know what a hand is, he will not know what a glove is for.” Is it that one of the foundational problems of our time is the loss of identity? Who am I? What am I? Why am I? These are the questions to which people need an answer. All of these things have to do with the word “to be.” Who do you say that I am? Many of our young people do not know that they are made for greatness because they do not know what greatness is, perhaps not fully grasping that they are children of God. Therefore, our identity and the truth about ourselves must also be considered according to that of Jesus Christ – He who is the mystery that reveals man to himself. (Cf., Gaudium et Spes, no. 22) Who, Lord, do you say that I am? Because we are created in the image and likeness of the triune God (made for

Lenten Restrictions

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

relationships), my experience of myself is a good starting point, but to fully understand myself, we need relationships, we need voices other than myself and I particularly need the voice of Christ to clarify my identity. If we take this another step and we think about who is Jesus Christ. He lived: poor, chaste, and obedient. Jesus was these things and they led to an intensely fulfilled human life. Jesus was not happy and fulfilled because He could withstand these, but he was happy and fulfilled because of them. How do we know that? He told us. “If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.” (Jn 15,11) So, the joy of the Lord is the way he lived, this comes to us by grace to make it possible. So, the question for us today is whether I believe that, along with grace, mercy and peace, . . . chastity is part of the Gospel message? Poverty is part of the Gospel message? Obedience is part of the Gospel message? Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian

Bethlehem Olivewood Sales After all Masses on February 10th and 11th

Beautiful hand-made olive wood religious articles made by Catholic families in Bethlehem and Jerusalem will be on sale the weekend of February the 10th and 11th after all masses.

Please stop by our tables and take a look at our beautiful handmade rosaries, statues, crosses and nativities. They will make a wonderful present for family and friends; or an opportunity to add a beautiful hand carved religious item for your home to be cherished through generations. The religious articles are made by the suffering Christian families in the Holy-Land, and are their means of spreading the word of Jesus, a goal that began two thousand years ago.

Bethlehem Artworks is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to over 100 plus suffering families and 135 kids each week. The population in the Holy Land has dropped from over 65% to under 2% just within the last ten years. Crafting the religious articles is the primary means for providing for the livelihood of Christian families in the Holy Land.
