Love the world. Love someone who doesn’t deserve it.” If we pracce resurrecon, Berry says, we take a truly long view: “plant sequoias.” Do something to- day that will only bear fruit long aſter you are gone, and resist focusing on the quick fix or short-term gain. If we pracce resurrecon, we will embrace mystery: “ask the quesons that have no answers.” If we prac- ce resurrecon, we will always find cause to rejoice and reason to laugh: “Be joyful though you have con- sidered all the facts.” There are many other pracces, of course. Read a book; engage a new idea; start a conversaon with someone who comes from a different place or holds different ideas; go out into the country at night, and look up at the night sky; resist those who want to make you afraid of “outsiders;” say “thank you” every day to somebody for something. This year, may Easter Day be filled with light and life and laughter and deep joy. And on Monday, may we all begin once again to “pracce resurrecon.” Cynthia M. In Europe, the day after Easter is a holiday. Easter Monday is a national holiday in France,

Germany and many other nations. I find it ironic that in countries where Christian observance is

quite low, the secular world knows something that we in religiously-observant America does

not: namely, that Easter can’t be confined to one day. It has to spill over into the days that fol-

low. I think the practice must have originated centuries ago as Christians realized that the hu-

man mind and heart cannot absorb Easter all at once. The new life offered to us and to the

whole creation through the Resurrection of Jesus is too much for us to capture in one Sunday

morning. Easter Monday is (or could be) a day to reflect and absorb. Easter Monday is the first

day of new life – of living differently.

When we recite the Apostles’ Creed, we affirm that Christ rose from the dead and that (therefore)

we believe in “the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.” Sometimes these seem like abstract

ideas or impossible notions or even antiquated doctrine out of step with our modern, scientific world. I

confess that I am fuzzy on the details, but I firmly embrace the truth to which this words point: love is

stronger than hate; life is stronger than death; hope is stronger than despair.

Resurrection is at least as much about the present as it is about the future. It is not simply – or even

only – about what happens after we die. Resurrection is about living a transformed life, here and now. No

one captures this better than Wendell Berry in his poem “Manifesto: the Mad Farmer Liberation Front,”

originally published in 1973 in The Country of Marriage. In this poem, Berry urges resistance to a way of life

that is focused on chasing the next pay raise and buying everything “ready-made.” Instead, he urges us to

“practice resurrection.” The poem is a series of short, imperative sentences that describe what

“resurrected life” looks like: “Love the Lord. Love the world. Love someone who doesn’t deserve it.”

If we practice resurrection, Berry says, we take a truly long view: “plant sequoias.” Do something to-

day that will only bear fruit long after you are gone, and resist focusing on the quick fix or short-term gain.

If we practice resurrection, we will embrace mystery: “ask the questions that have no answers.” If we prac-

tice resurrection, we will always find cause to rejoice and reason to laugh: “Be joyful though you have con-

sidered all the facts.” There are many other practices, of course. Read a book; engage a new idea; start a

conversation with someone who comes from a different place or holds different ideas; go out into the

country at night, and look up at the night sky; resist those who want to make you afraid of “outsiders;” say

“thank you” every day to somebody for something.

This year, may Easter Day be filled with light and life and laughter and deep joy. And on Monday,

may we all begin once again to “practice resurrection.”

Spring has sprung! We are eagerly anticipating our work this month with artists, Gregory Acker and Hamidou Koi-

vogui. They are providing a music and dance experience called "Play Ground ~ Play Sound!" Gregory and Hamidou

will work with the children on making percussion instruments and exploring music, rhythm, and dance. These tal-

ented artists will also lead our Family Fun Night on April 26 at 6:00

p.m. and our Derby Parade on May 2 at 11:00 a.m. These experiences

are funded through a grant from VSA Kentucky, a non-profit organiza-

tion that provides opportunities in the arts for children and adults

with disabilities. Any church member or friends who would like to

join us for these two events are more than welcome.

We also are still enrolling for the 2018-2019 school year. Help us

spread the word! We want all children to experience the wonderful

creative program we offer for young children. Interested families can

learn more at our website: hpcweekdayschool.org.

Family Overnight and Outdoor Worship

April 21st and 22nd

Everyone from Highland Presbyterian Church is invit-

ed to join us for a family cookout and overnight the

night before HPC’s annual outdoor worship service!

The overnight begins April 21st at 2:00 p.m. We’ll

have Saturday evening activities such as gaga ball,

soccer, a hayride, and a campfire with s'mores. Prices

below include Saturday dinner and lodging. We’ll stay

at Cedar Ridge Camp. Families can choose to stay in

one of 3 locations:

Hilltop pavilion at $20 per tent (bathrooms with

showers are located a short walk away).

Cottage – $12 per person in a large cottage that

sleeps 16 total. You would be sharing the one-room cottage with several other people. The bathrooms (including

showers) are a short walk away. The Cottage has air conditioning.

Lodge - $60 for a 4-person room and $80 for a 6-person room. The Lodge has air conditioning and bathrooms in

the same building.

Sunday Worship (April 22nd) will be at 10:00 at the Outdoor Chapel near Hilltop Pavilion. Even if your family choos-

es not to come for the overnight, please join us for outdoor worship! Following Worship, we’ll have lunch in Hopkins

Hall. Fellowship Committee will provide grilled hotdogs and hamburgers (and vege-options). Families are encour-

aged to bring a side-dish to share. (If you come to the Family overnight on Saturday, we will have refrigerator space

available to store your side dish for Sunday lunch). Follow-

ing lunch, we’ll have more outdoor games and canoeing for

everyone!

If you plan to come to the family overnight, please let Doo-

dle know and get your money to the church office by April

1st. Scholarships are available for families who would like to

participate and who need the assistance.

New Member Dinner

One Great Hour of Sharing On Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday we will be receiving the offering for One Great Hour of Sharing. Through this offering you join with Presbyterians worldwide in sharing God’s love with our neighbors in need around the world by providing relief from natural and human-caused disasters, food for the hungry, and support for the poor and op-pressed. This year’s collection will go to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People. You can donate by designating the memo of your checks for “One Great Hour of Shar-ing” or using the envelopes found in the pews. Thank you for your generosity!

Al-Dulaimi Family Join us in getting to know the Al-Dulaimi family on Sunday, April 15th following worship. In September, Highland Presbyterian Church began a journey of co-sponsoring this family as they arrived from Jordan after fleeing from Iraq. With the help of the co-sponsorship team, the Al-Dulaimi family has moved on to self-sufficiency. Please come support this important co-sponsorship and hear their story!

Funeral Booklet Luncheon On April 8th, immediately following the 11:00am service, we will host a luncheon and presentation surrounding fu-neral or memorial service planning. Whether you are thinking of your own, or a family member's, being prepared makes all the difference in putting together a service that reflects the wishes of those who have died. Please join Cynthia Campbell and Carol Pye to learn about our funeral booklets and begin thinking about future plans.

Fellowship cont.

On March 11th, we had our new member dinner at the Valentine’s Household. Gathering together for dinner were: Fred Holper, Sue Reese, Jack Mead, Kim Tribolet, Rebecca Mead, Cynthia Campbell, Doug Tribolet, Shannon Bostrom, Megan McCarty, Dayna Newman, Linda Valentine, Jessie Lay, and Ben Anderson. It was a time of fellowship, good food, and getting to know one another.

Smoketown Mobile Pantry Grace Hope Presbyterian Church is host for the Dare2Care Smoketown Mobile Pantry and they have invited Highland to partner with them. Come out to distribute food and serve our neighbors on April 17th at 1:30 pm with Grace Hope Presbyterian Church at 702 E. Breckenridge St./Clay St. (in the church parking lot). The pantry runs unless it is 20 degrees or less. To learn more or to be added to the volunteer email list, contact Nanc Angerman

STITCH Sewing Together in the Caring Highlands, is a partnership between Highland Presbyterian and Kentucky Refugee Ministries. We teach sewing to KRM women who have settled in Louisville from many countries. In the past six and a half years, we have had over 120 sewing machines donated to our program. We are able to give machines to our students who show a talent and interest in sewing in their homes. STITCH is looking for a volunteer who can help us with simple sewing machine repairs and general maintenance of our donated machines. If you or someone you know has an interest in and the ability to work on sewing machines, we’d love to speak with you. We could use help one or two times a month. Please contact either STITCH Co-Director Anna Gray Slagle ([email protected]) or Janet Raderer ([email protected]).

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program is collecting items to create Dis-aster Relief kits. When a tornado, floor, or hurricane devastates a community, people scramble to deal with the chaos and to recover. They need practical help – fast. We can make a difference by contributing items for hygiene kits. Each hygiene kit, in a one-gallon zip lock bag, includes: 1 hand towel, 1 washcloth, 1 wide tooth comb, 1 nail clipper, 1 bar of soap (bath size in wrap-per), 1 toothbrush (in original packaging) (Toothpaste is not requested.), 10 Band-Aids.

We are collecting these items in bulk and request that you drop off the items in the blue bins in the fellowship hall on April 1st, 8th, or 15th. If you would like to help assemble the hygiene kits, we will be gathering at Strathmoor Presbyterian Church on April 21st from 1-3 pm.

Don’t have time to get to the store? We have set up an Amazon Wish List for the items needed. Search “Highland Presbyterian Church” under lists on Ama-zon and get the items needed shipped to your home or church.

Service and Ice Cream Party HPC invites children, youth, and families to a service and ice cream party! On Sunday, April 15th from 2:00-3:00 we will organize donations from the congregation and assemble supplies into completed disaster kits for the Presbyteri-an Disaster Assistance to be taken to Strathmoor Presbyterian Church on April 16th. If you have any questions, you may contact Doodle Harris at [email protected] or Megan McCarty at

[email protected] or (502) 451-2910.

COME CELEBRATE WITH US!!! Our beloved Mary Rapier is retiring from her service as accompanist for the Children's Music Ministry at the end of this school year. She has worked with our children for more years than we can count, and we will miss her ter-ribly! Because Mary holds such a special place in our hearts, our annual Spring Celebration will be a much bigger celebration! On Wednesday, April 18th, all of our children's choirs will sing as part of this service, which begins at 5:45 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. As always, Mary will bless us with her piano talent. Following the service, we will celebrate Mary with a reception.

The Children's Music Ministry would like to celebrate Mary through donations to the Mary and Leon Rapier Fund, which provides support to our music ministry in a variety of ways. We will have baskets available at the Spring Celebration to collect donations to the Rapier Fund in honor of Mary's retirement from the Children's Mu-sic Ministry. Come celebrate with us on April 18th, at 5:45 p.m.!

Parents: Our April schedule is a bit unusual - NO REHEARSAL on April 4th due to JCPS Spring Break; Regular Re-hearsal on April 11, 5:30 - 6:15; then our children's choir year will conclude with our Spring Celebration on April 18.
