FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 10, 2019

“Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil.” - St. Luke

One of my farmer friends from one of my former parishes recently observed that the greatest joy people have from travelling, is telling others where they are going, or where they have been. “Yes, we just got back from Texas.” “Yes, next month we are leaving for France.” The other day I heard someone tell a group of people of which I was a part of, that they were flying off somewhere. You could tell, this person took joy in telling that they were going somewhere that most of us cannot afford to travel, much less find the time to go for such an extended stay.

My siblings are all getting older as well. One sign that they are truly living out their 60’s, is that they all seem to be travelling this winter, even though they claim that they are all on fixed incomes. My brother John and his wife spent some time in New Orleans. My brother Jerry traveled with his wife to Arizona. My sister Mary winters in Florida with her husband. St. Augustine once said that “He who does not travel, only reads one page from the book of life.” It seems that my siblings are reading an entire library this winter.

I have done a fair share of travel in the past. But the truth being told, I like sleeping in my own bed. However, I remember a spiritual director who said that when you travel, just go on your trip and do not announce it to the world, out of humility. For that spiritual director said that there are many people who cannot afford to make long-distant trips and by telling them about your planned trip, you are only making them feel bad and yourself feel good. A couple of weeks back I went down to that exotic place called Nebraska, and stayed at a rectory where a priest friend and his associate resides. I came home early to avoid driving on snowy roads. I celebrated Mass in their church and a man came up after Mass and said to me: “If you had a few days off you should have flown to Florida where it is warm.” I said: “Minnesotans can’t take the heat of Florida, Nebraska is all the warmer we can stand it. (Amazingly, one day they had 40 degrees when I was there! It felt like Florida!)

Why all this talk about travel? I mention travel, for on this First Sunday Mass of the Lenten season, Jesus also travels and takes a trip. For the Lord retreats into the desert or the wilderness to pray, to fast and to be in the presence of His Heavenly Father. And just as with many trips, we experience some unfortunate soul or situation; our Blessed Lord has a similar, unfortunate experience. For the Lord experiences Satan or the devil himself, tempting the Lord three times. Fortunately, the Good News is that the Lord is able to overcome those three terrible temptations, and from there goes on to begin his three-year public ministry.

The reason why we travel is for the purpose to “get away”, to “get out of our regular routine” and simply “relax”. The Redeemer went to the desert, not so much to “get away” from it all, but more so to “get ready” for the work of ministry and His Messiahship that would lead the Lord to the cross and ultimately the resurrection.

I would like you to consider these next 40 days as a kind of retreat or a spiritual trip into the wilderness or desert. Although we must live our regular lives, it is a time to “step back” and reflect on our religious life and take up those spiritual areas that we have grown weak in over the past 12 months; namely prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Perhaps if we spend 40 days in more intense spiritual preparation, we in turn may be more refreshed to live out our spiritual life through the remainder of 2019 and into 2020!

Particularly, I would like to invite you all to “step away” and make a little spiritual retreat this Sunday or next Wednesday for an hour or two and give your soul a little vacation by coming to our first pastoral presentation that is entitled: “WHY BE A CATHOLIC IN 2019?” With the many challenges the Church is presently facing, we need to rest in the Lord and again remind ourselves where we came from and where we are going. I hope that you can find a little time to rest with your soul this Sunday or Wednesday and grow in your love for the Lord. See you there! Happy Lent!

Stewardship of Gratitude

Stewardship Of Gratitude Thank you for your generosity. It is through your efforts that we are bridging the gap of our stewardship commitments and hard goals with our area Catholic School as well as our Diocesan commitments. This week we paid off all our property insurance with Catholic Mutual, which is a wonderful feeling. There are so many bills and expenses that the average member would not be aware of, but are basic payments that are required to keep the church doors open. Thank you to those of you that made an offering on Ash Wednesday to keep our parish in line with our budget. Those results will be published in next week’s bulletin. As always, thank you for your gifts!!!

Pastoral Talks – Lenten Series – 2019

Perhaps you have decided to give up some negative or unnecessary things for Lent, but how about taking on some spiritually positive things for Lent. In the spirit of increasing our Lenten prayer and reflection, how about attending one of our adult Pastoral Talk sessions. The following is our schedule for Sundays around 12:00 P.M. in the main church and again on Wednesday at 6:15 P.M. (Day care and activities will be provided for parents with children.)

1st Sunday of Lent – Why be Catholic in 2019?

2nd Sunday and Wednesday of Lent – Skipping Mass – Skipping an Event or Skipping Eternity?

3rd Sunday of Lent - A Church in Crisis or a Church Under Conversion?

4th Sunday of Lent – Eschatology – The Study of Final Things – Heaven, Hell, Death and Purgatory

5th Sunday of Lent – Believing Beyond the Bible – Catholic Tradition

Palm Sunday - “Is Holy Week Just a Lot of Hype” (*This talk will only be presented on Sunday. No talk will be presented on Wednesday evening.)

Make your Lent of 2019 memorable. Come spend a little time with us after Mass on Sunday or on Wednesday evening during the time of Faith Formation classes.

Thank You Worship

Committee! Many thanks to the members of the Worship Committee that made short work of taking down the remaining items of our winter environment and prepared the sanctuary for the Lenten season. (*Remember, Lent means “springtime”.) We all agreed in the end that we were ready for the change from evergreens and wreaths to something more simple. May the decorations of the church inspire our worshippers to be ever more devout as we pray, fast and give with greater intensity as we enter into these next 40 days! Thank you Worship Committee members for all of your help!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Stepping Up in Faith

This week we received $1,700.00 for our front steps. Since we are receiving a matching grant for every dollar that we are taking in at this time from a generous benefactor, we actually took in this week $3,400.00!!! Speaking of steps, that is another BIG STEP FORWARD! $1,075.00 of this week’s money was given in loving memory of Donna Peterson† whose Funeral Mass was recently celebrated. Please continue to consider supporting this basic and important capital improvement, especially now during the Lenten season when we are asked to intensify our charitable giving. For every dollar that you give, you are actually giving double during this matching grant time and we are so grateful. Presently, we are anticipating in this month of March, the blueprints being completed for this front step project from our architectural firm in Moorhead. After the blueprints are completed, we will begin the process of seeking out a contractor for the project. If everything goes as planned, we hope to have the project before the first snow fall by October or November of 2019. This project will not only add great curb appeal to our parish but it will also improve the safety of those souls that come to worship in our church. Thank you for all that you have done to see the successful execution of this project.

Council of Catholic Women Diaper Drive

The Council of Catholic Women Reverence for Life Commission would like to thank all who donated to our Diaper Drive. 1,145 diapers were divided between Options For Women - Mankato and Birthright of Mankato, both of which are local pregnancy centers. Other items, such as outfits, baby toys, shoes, socks, blankets, a boppy pillow and cash were also greatly appreciated. Your donations help make a difference in the lives of precious babies.

Apostolate Stewardship 2018-19: $315,597.13

This week we took another big step forward in our commitment to our area Catholic School stewardship goal. For this week we paid out $20,216.66. With this amount we completed our Fiscal Year 2018-2019 commitment. The only hard goal remaining is the Diocesan United Fund. Presently we must pay to the Diocese the amount of $26,339.89. This week we paid the Diocese an additional $6,688.50. If your great generosity continues, we will try and complete this amount before the close of the month of March. This would then give us three solid months to continue to raise money for the front entrance as well as to build up some reserve for the new roof that we plan to put on the 1925, former school building. As discussed with the Pastoral and Finance Council, our parish commitment is to maintain, upgrade and improve in the years ahead the church, rectory and 1925, red brick portion of the school. Thank you for your generous support! We are doing very well this year in our stewardship corner! Congratulations to you!!!

Fuel Fund

We continue to make stewardship progress on our 2019 Fuel Fund drive. This week we took in an additional amount of $5,390.00. This is a very generous amount of stewardship! Thank you so very much for your gifts! In the month of January alone, the parish paid out in fuel costs a total of $3,771.57. So far this season, the parish has paid a total of $14,915.79. To date, we have now raised a total of $10,990.00. This has exceeded our desired goal of $7,000.00, by $3,990.00! We have also exceeded last year’s total monies raised by $1,579.00. This is nothing less than excellent. Even though our temperatures have been very cold, your hearts of generosity have been very warm. Thank you for your generosity and support. May God reward you in your great generosity!
