From the Principal
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Assembly Cancelled
Due to the Cross Country tomorrow, we have cancelled our assembly for this week. Award receipents will receive
their awards next Friday.
Thanks Barb!
After 30 years of service to our school and community, as both a teacher and chaplain, Barb Miller has decided to
retire. I know that it took a long time for Barb to reach this decision, as she is so committed and passionate about
our students, staff, parents and our broader Spring Gully community. Barb should enter her retirement with a great
sense of pride and achievement, given the positive influence she has had on countless students, families and
colleagues over many years.
Thanks Barb, you will be sorely missed by us all.
We will be inviting Barb to our assembly next week. Please come along. I’m sure many parents would like to
thank Barb in person.
New School Chaplain
Given the retirement of Barb, we have been working with Korus Connect to find a suitable replacement chaplain. I
am pleased to announce that Rose Amy will be our new chaplain. Rose is currently the chaplain at two other local
primary schools and will start working at our school for two days per week, starting next week. I would like to
thank Barb for supporting Rose for the last two weeks as she transitioned into our school. Rose will be working
each Monday and Tuesday.
Respectful Relationships – Case study
As mentioned early last year, our school was approached by the Department of Education and Training to be a
showcase school in relation to the work we have done on Respectful Relationships. The video that was produced,
along with an information brochure, can be found at the link below.
https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/Pages/respectfulrelationships.aspx
WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!
We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing, and quality instruction, and are
conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual
student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding
of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and
activities to improve your child's schooling experience.
Students from Year 4 to 6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online
during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any
way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during,
or after completion of the survey. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier
that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept
anonymous in the response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This
ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.
This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school during the next couple of weeks. The
survey only takes up to 20 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time.

The survey results will be reported back to the school before the end of Term 2. All survey data that is made
available in reports are for groups of students only so that no individual student can be identified. Data suppression
rules are used for schools with low student numbers per year level.
Survey results are always shared with our students and School Council, and form part of the Annual Report each
year.
Last year we used the survey results to plan greater opportunities for our students to be involved in decision making
at our school. For example, this year our Student Representative Council will get the opportunity to influence what
Parent Club will spend their fundraising money on. They are also being consulted on the implementation of School-
Wide Positive Behaviour Support at our school, including how different parts of our school are being used i.e. play
areas, passive areas, etc.
If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit:

No Parking Signs
The City of Greater Bendigo are changing our 2 Minute parking signs on Spring Gully Road to ‘No Parking’
signs. A ‘No Parking’ sign means you can’t park during the times designated on the sign, but you can drop off or
pick up passengers or goods without leaving your vehicle (i.e. you must be within three metres of your
vehicle). You must attend to your business promptly (within two minutes of parking your vehicle).
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in
Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is an annual part of the school calendar and has been since 2008.
NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as
reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year, in May.
NAPLAN tests skills in Literacy and Numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. The
information gained from these tests is used to support the teaching and learning that takes place at our school. All
parents will receive a comprehensive report of their child’s NAPLAN results.
Curriculum Days
Having had a compulsory curriculum day at the start of the year, we have now finalised our three remaining
curriculum days for 2019. Please note these dates in your calendars. Students are not to attend school on these
days. We apologise that two of these days are in the same week, however, the limited availability of George
Booker made this difficult to avoid.
Monday, 27th May – Assessment and Reporting
Friday, 31st May – Mathematics Professional Development with George Booker
Wednesday, 24th July – Restorative Practice Professional Development
Choir Competition Participation Cancelled
Due to the Mathematics Professional Development day, the school choir will not be participating in the Bendigo
Choirs Competition this year. We are very disappointed that these dates have resulted in a clash this year.

Urban Camp
I was lucky enough to attend Urban Camp this week with the Grade 6 students. Every student represented our
school brilliantly in the way they engaged in the activities, supported each other and in their general behaviour. We
were all very proud of our school leaders!
A big thanks to Nick Shipp and Renelle McManus for volunteering as parents to accompany us. Also, to Miss
Lockett, Mr Smith, Mrs Hartney, Carmel Jacobs and Mr Staley for supporting all of the students over the 3 days.

Advancing Medicines Using Digital Technologies – Grade 6 Incursion
Students in Grade 6 participated in this incursion today. We were lucky to have the opportunity to have this
incursion at our school at fairly short notice due to a cancelation at another school. Students worked with scientists
and educators on issues relating to the role of technology in medicine.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS
This week, Grade 1 / 2 continued to work on the topic of Help Seeking. As a class we came up with a description of
what a good friend does, with an emphasis on the importance of our actions, as well as seeking help we can give help. We can use our strengths and be a good friend when we work to help others with their problems.
We worked through some scenarios that we may face while at school and came up with suggestions that we could use to help people in need. We also talked about times when we may need to seek help from adults when we need to.
We look forward to seeing many example of students helping their peers at school and would love to hear about
students who have been helping out a lot more at home.

Bendigo Police visit Spring Gully Primary School
Last Wednesday, the Grade 3/4 unit were lucky enough to have a visit from Senior Constable Holly Lembke, a
member of the Bendigo Police Force. Senior Constable Lembke visited us to conclude our Term One topic of
'Getting a Fair Go'. She spoke to us about many different laws, reasons for why we need laws to be enforced, her
job as a Police Officer and the important role each member of the Police Force play to keep the public safe. Senior
Constable Lembke emphasised how important it is for children to feel ‘safe’ and that all police officers are their
‘friend’ and should feel comfortable approaching them in public. Some students were even lucky enough to wear
Constable Lembke’s heavy police vest, sit in a police vehicle and activate the sirens and lights!
For Topic last week, Mr Crawford organised for Constable Lembke to visit us at school. It was very cool as some
people got to hop in her car and one student got to put on her heavy police vest. She also told us a lot about her job
and was very friendly.
Leni and Paige 3/4 C
Last Wednesday, we really enjoyed the police officer visiting the 3/4 students. We learnt that they have a camera on
their top for proof, evidence and safety. I liked when she handcuffed one of the girls. I liked seeing the police car.
Annie and Ellie 3/4G
On the 24th April, Holly the police lady came to school. She talked a lot about what different jobs police have and
road rules.
Matilda C 3/4 M
In the first week back, we had a Senior Constable named Holly come to visit us and we got to talk about laws and
consequences.
Liam F 3/4M
Officer Holly showed us her handcuffs and handcuffed Sharna. She talked about what life is like as a Police
Officer.
Ned 3/4R
Some of us were lucky enough to sit in Officer Holly’s Police car. We got to hear the police siren and the police
radio.

Member of Parliament Jacinta Allan vists Grade 6 students
On Friday 26th April we were very fortunate to have our local Member of Parliament, Jacinta Allan, visit the senior
building to chat with our Grade 6 group. The Grade 6 integrated topic for Term 1 was all about Government and
democracy in Australia. Jacinta spoke about her 20 years in the State Parliament and what it has meant to her to be
a representative of the Bendigo region. Students had many thoughtful and interesting questions answered and
thoroughly enjoyed Jacinta’s time in the classroom. They also got to show off their knowledge of how parliament is
organised and how laws are passed through the houses of parliament. We are very thankful for the visit.

Active Travel News Warm hands, pumping heart – way to make a great start! So it’s finally rained! Woohoo! It’s good news for gardens – but it doesn’t have to stop us walking or riding to
school…
In fact, that short walk or ride to school is probably even more important when it’s cold and grey outside – it’s a
great energiser and de-stressor.
Getting some physical activity and sun (or at least light) on our face is a sure way to chase away those winter blues.
For kids, a bit of exercise before school helps prime their brain for learning and helps them to be more settled in
class.
So go with the saying ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes’ and rug your family up on cold or
wet days: invest in some gloves or mittens (and teach your kids to stow them safely once they get to school), and
pop on a coat and scarf.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 30th August 2019. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
