LITURGY CORNER

For the next five weeks we will follow the story of the

multiplication miracle and the long discourse which

follows it in John’s gospel. The ‘bread of life’

discourse provides important teaching on the

Eucharist. It is significant that the setting is shortly

before the Passover, which was the Jewish feast

recalling the escape of the people from slavery in

Egypt and their being fed by God with bread (manna)

from heaven in the desert. One of the expected signs

of the coming of the Messiah was another, even

greater, feeding with manna. The people have been

attracted to Jesus because of his cures of the sick

and now they come looking for more. The Summit

Each year, thousands of children across

Madagascar die from preventable diseases like

diarrhoea due to a lack of clean water and

proper sanitation. By supporting the Catholic

Mission Church Appeal today or by partnering

with us through your monthly gift, you are

helping missionaries, like Sister Rose

Rasoavololona, provide life-saving physical

water as well as spiritual support, which

together makes up the Living Water the country

so urgently needs.

The Miracle and the Message become the Sharing

On a day trip to Corinth in Greece, the tour leader seated me for lunch with two mature Greek women. They didn’t speak English, but that did not deter them from telling me through gestures to eat the bitter lettuce I was setting aside in the salad. So, I did. Then the women proceeded to open big purses and offer large, carefully wrapped squares of moussaka. It looked a lot like lasagne. They were carrying their own cold casseroles. Their generous offer suggests one popular interpretation of Sunday’s gospel, the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Some interpreters assume the crowd in the gospel includes a good many moussaka-carrying

mamas ready for anything. They assume that after Jesus blesses the five loaves and two fish, the people in the crowd break open their stashes and share the food they have. The miracle and the message become the sharing together. The story, however, does not include these details. We have to add them. The story never mentions people with pockets and bundles full of stashed food. Explaining the feeding in this concrete way closes off interpretation; it doesn’t open our minds to the mystery of who Jesus is and what he reveals In John’s gospel Jesus’ healing and feeding actions are called signs. A sign points to more than is visible. In chapter six, John’s gospel

reflects theologically for another 49 verses on what the feeding sign points to about Jesus. In the end the sign separates believers from unbelievers. For five Sundays these verses invite us to reflect our eucharistic faith today.
