Focal Point…

Welcome to Lent. Of course, everyone marks Lent in a different way. Some people like to give up something for Lent, chocolate, alcohol or some other thing we regard as a luxury. Other people like to take something on for Lent, reading a book, studying a book of the Bible, spending more time in prayer and meditation. There is no right or wrong way to mark Lent. As long as we remember that we are journeying towards Holy Week when Jesus was arrested and crucified and Easter when we celebrate the resurrection.

To help you this year here will be two Lent courses. The first will take place as part of the 10am service in Church with an opportunity to get together in small groups for discussion.

The second will follow the Thursday morning service in the Chapel to look more closely at one of the readings from the previous Sunday.

Whatever you decide to do this year I hope that it will enable you to grow both spiritually in your faith and in understanding of what God wants you to do in your journey and also bring you into a closer relationship with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

The Moat Players

We are only a week or so away from opening night of our next production, which is an hilarious farce called “According to Schedule”. For those of you who remember John and Pauline Williams, this play is written by their grandson, Robert Scott. The play tells the story of Nina who is keen to show off her fiancé to her sister Pippa

and brother Roger. Sadly, Pippa finds him all too familiar, and his mobster parents aren’t much of a hit with the family either. Then there’s thieving Aunt Minnie, and a frog who is following Carter, Roger’s best friend. Show dates are Thursday 12th, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th March. Tickets are still available and cost £8.50 for adults and £7.00 for concessions, and can be booked by calling the Ticket Hotline on 07760 306605.

JOURNEY THROUGH LENT TO EASTER

This year’s Lent Groups will be led by Jan Turner, and will take place in the chapel on Thursday mornings at 10.30am, immediately after our Stations of the Cross and Holy Communion Service. The dates are 5th, 12th, 19th & 26th March and 2nd April.

The previous Sunday’s readings will be looked into in depth with group discussion, as well as there being time for meditation, prayer, stillness and music.

These meetings will be very relaxed and informal.

“Cathedral of the Month” – March

Coventry Cathedral

Coventry has had three Cathedrals in the past 1000 years: the 12th century Priory Church of St Mary, the medieval Parish Church Cathedral of St Michael and the modern Coventry Cathedral, also named for St Michael. Coventry’s fortunes and story are closely associated to the story of its Cathedrals – a story of death and rebirth.

Coventry’s earliest cathedral, dedicated to St Mary, was founded as a Benedictine community by Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife Godiva in 1043. Built on the site of a former religious house for nuns, its sheer size is some indication of the wealth which Coventry acquired in the middle ages.

In 1539, with the dissolution of the monasteries, the See of Coventry and Lichfield was transferred to Lichfield and the former cathedral fell into decay. Only in 1918 was the modern diocese of Coventry created in its own right, and the church of St Michael designated as its cathedral.

The majority of the great ruined churches and cathedrals of England are the outcome of the violence of the dissolution in 1539. The ruins of St Michael’s are the consequence of violence in our own time. On the night of 14 November 1940, the city of Coventry was devastated by bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe. The Cathedral burned with the city, having been hit by several incendiary devices.

The decision to rebuild the cathedral was taken the morning after its destruction. Rebuilding would not be an act of defiance, but rather a sign of faith, trust and hope for the future of the world. It was the vision of the Provost at the time, Richard Howard, which led the people of Coventry away from feelings of bitterness and hatred. This has led to the cathedral’s Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation, which has provided spiritual and practical support, in areas of conflict throughout


the world.

Shortly after the destruction, the cathedral stonemason, Jock Forbes, noticed that two of the charred medieval roof timbers had fallen in the shape of a cross. He set them up in the ruins where they were later placed on an altar of rubble with the moving words ‘Father Forgive’ inscribed on the Sanctuary wall. Another cross was fashioned from three medieval nails by local priest, the Rev’d Arthur Wales. The Cross of Nails has become the symbol of Coventry’s ministry of reconciliation.

Her Majesty the Queen laid the foundation stone on 23 March 1956 and the building was consecrated on 25 May 1962, in her presence. The ruins remain hallowed ground and together the two create one living Cathedral.

Mothering Sunday

Everyone celebrates Mother's Day in their own way, from kids preparing mum a much-deserved breakfast in bed, to older children treating their mother to a quintessentially British afternoon tea. But while we see it as a universally beloved day of affection and celebration, Mothering Sunday isn't technically what you think it is. It's not even the same thing

as Mother's Day.

The Original "Mothering Sunday"

Mothering Sunday began as an explicitly religious event of the 16th Century, with no connection to mothers at all. The word "mothering" referred to the "mother church", which is to say the main church or cathedral of the region. It became a tradition that, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, people would return to their mother church for a special service. This pilgrimage was apparently known as "going a-mothering", and became something of a holiday event, with domestic servants traditionally given the day off to visit their own families as well as their mother church.


5 Interesting Lent Facts

The word Lent has nothing to do with fasting or giving things up

‘Lent’ is a shortened version of the Old English word ‘lencten’, a word which simply means spring (in relation to the season). It is thought to have Germanic roots

and seems likely to have been used to described the season when the days began to lengthen, signifying new life and renewal. Over time, the word Lent came to be linked specifically to the Christian tradition of fasting before Easter, which always coincided with the spring.

Lent was originally 36 days long

Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, the day after Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) and lasts for 46 days up until Easter Sunday (although officially the Lent fast is only 40 days long as Sundays aren’t included). It wasn’t always like this though – in fact, Lent started out as just the six-week period (still excluding Sundays) in the lead up to Easter, so the fast was only 36 days long! Lent was extended to 40 days (which is why it begins on Ash Wednesday) to parallel with and help Christians remember the time Christ spent in the wilderness, avoiding temptation at the hands of the Devil, as he prepared for his ministry, death and resurrection.

Lent is about fasting and spiritual growth

Most people know about giving things up for Lent. Some people give up chocolate, sugary drinks, meat, alcohol, cigarettes – even other modern indulgences like videogames or social media in a bid to exercise self-control and spend more time focussing on what is important in life. Lent is traditionally a time of repentance and spiritual renewal, where Christians remember Christ’s own preparation in the desert, where he turned his back on the temptation of the devil in order to prepare himself for the mission God had sent him to complete. Hundreds of years ago this manifested in the form that people gave up meat, fish, eggs, wine, oil, butter and other dairy products. While many Christians have moved away from this practice,


this is still seen in some Eastern Churches, following a much stricter fast.

Lent is also about doing good

Lent isn’t just about remembering Christ’s suffering – it’s a time in which believers try to be the best Christian they can possibly be. In the early Lent traditions, Almsgiving (the giving of charity to the poor and needy) was another important aspect of the fast. So the principle of doing Lent generously has been around for hundreds of years before the 40 acts generosity challenge began! “If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honoured, all the parts share its joy” (1 Cor 12:26)

Mother’s Day is actually a part of Lent

Lent is the build-up to Easter and Easter is a celebration of Christ’s rebirth. What better a thing to celebrate during the fourth Sunday of Lent than mothers? The Sundays of Lent are all joyous occasions for Christians everywhere – here in the UK the fourth of these Sundays is known as Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday was originally all about returning to your home (or ‘mother’) church, and eventually it became a celebration of motherhood. Lent, as mothers around the country are sure to remind you, is all about giving generously!

Good Friday is a bit of a strange name

The term “Good Friday” seems a bit strange at first glance given that it is the day we remember Jesus’ crucifixion and burial. Scholars continue to debate the correct origin of the word good; some attribute it as meaning Holy, or Pious, while others argue that it comes from a corruption of ‘God Friday’. The Oxford English Dictionary opts for the first – but either definition hints at the significance of the day. Good Friday is certainly the holiest Friday of any given year.

Pathways for Discipleship

Seven opportunities in March/April to learn about the renewed pathways for discipleship and servant-leadership coming in September 2020.

A renewed journey of discipleship will be running across Church of England Birmingham from September 2020.

The aim will be to equip all people to grow, as Bishop David says, as “more confident disciples” in all of life, and to develop the character and skills of servant leadership.

Building on 3D, conversations across the diverse contexts of CofE Birmingham, and the results of a diocesan-wide survey of discipleship and servant leadership, it will offer a flexible and modular approach to support the formation of disciples. Four modules are taking shape called “The Way of Discipleship” and one called “The Way of Servant-Leadership”.

All five can be done in one year, or over a longer period.

They will be as accessible as possible, drawing on the experience of local people, facilitated by local tutors and also all available online to be used in many different contexts.

There will be seven evening events in March and April to introduce the new pathways. The evenings will cover their content, method and ethos. ( Dates and venues on the CofE Birmingham website ).

“I hope anyone who is interested in growing in their own discipleship, and in developing others will come and find out about these renewed opportunities,” says The Rev Guy Donegan-Cross, Director of Learning for Discipleship and Mission.

“Our recent survey showed there is a genuine hunger for information that shapes our experience, character and knowledge. These new modules will be informative, but also be about modelling the life of faith, and being equipped to serve every day.”

“I hope there will be lots of people who have taught and facilitated discipleship in the past who will be motivated and envisioned to join in with these “Ways”, and perhaps some new folk too.”

Entry to the introductory events is free, and each will last no more than 90 minutes. There will be an opportunity to offer input and


feedback as well as to learn more.

Hobs Moat Striders & Strollers Dates for the next meetings are Friday 6th and 20th March (10.15am for a 10.30am departure). These free walks in the Hobs Moat area are led by trained volunteers. No need to book, just turn up on the day. Refreshments are provided afterwards. The walk last up to an hour. The walk is suitable for everyone but if you are unsure, please come along and find out more details. The volunteers will be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Olton Tavern Bowling Club

Spring is now upon us and the bowling club is beginning to awaken. Members are enquiring when the green will be available to play on so that they can begin practising for the start of the new season. Members are being contacted to inform them of any pre season friendly games and Club competitions which are due to take place. Also, checking that they are still available to play.

The winter months have been very wet and mild which has created it's own problems for our Green Keeper. Ideally some hard frosts are helpful to reduce fungal diseases, which scars the bowling green and has to be treated to deter further damage. It is also a busy period for the Secretary with administration work in preparation for the start of the new season. This include attending various league meetings and ensuring that players are registered to play in those leagues.

If this sport is of interest to you then please contact me on 07804863786. I can then arrange a taster session and free coaching for you. You do not need your own equipment as the club has it's own, which you may practise with. Also the sport allows you some gentle exercise, meet new people and learn a new sport, which is a good incentive. Alternatively, just come along as a spectator and watch a game to see if it may appeal to you.
