    St. Gregory the Great

    Mission Statement

St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Today as we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ let us pray for those who are hungry, malnourished and starving. In the month of May, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring the love of God to the poor by assisting families by providing food and assisting with utility and rent bills.

YEAR OF MERCY WEEKLY ACTION STEP In the bulletin every week from now until the Feast of Christ the King on Nov. 20, 2016, we will publish in the bulletin a weekly action step that will help you to live out in a very practical way what the Year of Mercy is all about. We ask that every day in the week that follows, you look for opportunities to put that action step into practice.

The action step for this week is: Memorize the corporal and spiritual works of mercy and show your children what they mean. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Perpetual Adoration with exposition needs a great push. People ask me: “What will convert America and save the world?” My answer is prayer. What we need is for every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in holy hours of prayer. I pray that Community Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament dedicated to this purpose of spreading perpetual adoration will flourish!—Mother Teresa St. Gregory has Adoration every first Friday of the month. June 3rd is the day for exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:00am to 7:00pm.

As often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you

proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. 1 Cor. 11:26

CHICAGO – The International Chamber Artists (ICA), led by Artistic Director Patrick Godon, closes its 10th anniversary season with two weekend concerts in June, featuring German masterworks by Schubert and Bach (June 5) with guest artist Marie Tachouet, principal flute of the Lyric Opera Orchestra, and a brass celebration (June 11 and 12), with guest artist John Hagstrom, second trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra playing on the June 12th program at St. Gregory the Great Church. On Sunday, June 5 at 3:00 PM at the Belden Stratford Hotel (2300 N. Lincoln Park West, Chicago), ICA presents a program of “German Gems,” including the Schubert Piano Trio No. 1 in B flat major, a stunning piece — written in the last year of the composer’s life — reflecting Schubert’s compositional maturity and dramatic eloquence about the human spirit. Marie Tachouet, principal flute of the Lyric Opera Orchestra, is featured in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata in G Minor, BWV 2010, a youthful work most likely composed by his son C.P.E. Bach, as well as the more current Sonata for Flute and Harp by Lowell Lieberman, which was selected as the best new flute work by the National Flute Society in 1989. ICA’s 10th anniversary season closes with two "Brass Celebration" concerts on Saturday, June 11 at 7:30 PM at St. Michael’s Church (1633 N. Cleveland, Chicago) and Sunday, June 12 at 4:00 PM at St. Gregory the Great Church (5535 N. Paulina, Chicago), featuring guest artist John Hagstrom, second trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, on the June 12th program. Works to be performed include the Laudes for Brass Quintet by American composer Jan Bach, whose style has been described as both traditional and contemporary, and filled with an "inexhaustible sense of humor,” as well as the Schubert Piano Trio No. 1 in B flat major, a stunning work for cornet and piano by former CSO brass member Otto Schubert, and more! Tickets to all ICA concerts are free ($15 donation suggested). Visit icamusic.org for more information. ABOUT INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER ARTISTS ICA’s mission began back in 2006 when a small, motivated group of local musicians sought new ways to bring great music and emerging artists to a broader audience in Chicago. Today, ICA celebrates its tenth anniversary season, and is recognized as one of the city’s premier chamber music organizations. The Chicago Tribune music critic John von Rhein has lauded ICA as “one of the most vibrantly appealing of the many area professional chamber music groups” and has highlighted ICA concerts among his weekly list of “recommended classical music concerts.” ICA has been honored to be part of the Artists in Residence program at Andersonville’s St. Gregory the Great parish – a unique outreach initiative that seeks to foster creativity and share art with the community. In addition to performances at St. Gregory the Great, ICA has performed at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Belden Stratford Hotel, St. James Cathedral, on WFMT 98.7 FM, and on UIC’s concert series. Beyond the city limits, ICA has performed in Western Springs with The Tower Chorale, out of state in North Carolina, and internationally in Germany – among other places. ICA has always presented its concerts at no charge in order to share the classical music experience with as many people as possible. And while our admission price is free, we take pride in presenting concerts at the highest artistic levels. Our musicians regularly perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera Orchestra, and other outstanding ensembles.
