It was kind of a nightmare at the shelter—like being on a treadmill and you don’t know how you’re

going to get off. You get up, they send you out on the street from 7:30 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon, rain or shine. You try to fill your day, find a way out of it, but you spend your time worrying about where your next meal might come from, or whether you will get a spot on the floor at night. People Incorporated changed all that for me.”

Ken Abner has lived in Minneapolis since 1979, when he moved here from Chicago. He worked in food service and construction until becoming homeless in 2008, when a long-term relationship broke down. So started the vicious cycle of homelessness, and with it—depression.

“I just couldn’t stand it at the shelter. There was no real help offered to break that cycle, and it’s hard to do on your own without any resources.” He met a People Incorporated outreach worker last year, and was eventually able to move into Ramsey House, our Safe Haven in St. Paul for people

who are homeless and have mental illness. It provided Ken with a stable place to live, psychiatric and medical care, and a way to transition into more permanent housing. For Ken, that chance meant everything to him.

“I was so happy to be there—I had my own room, and they helped me connect with a psychiatrist and counseling. I did volunteer work there, helping people use the computer, serving food, and cleaning up. It gave me a purpose again. Then they helped me find my apartment. I’ve been there now almost a year

and it’s wonderful. It means my daughter can come stay with me, and I can get away from others living on the streets and all the drugs and violence there. Now the next step is to find a job—I want to work as a cook and be self-sufficient again.”

Ken is now coming to People Incorporated’s new Homeless Services drop-in center at the old headquarters building on York Avenue (see p. 2). “It’s a positive place to be and I know that the staff there are not judging me about being homeless. I meet with my case manager and she’s helping me put my resume together and look for a job. That’s what makes People Incorporated different. They treat me with dignity, and help me set goals and get back on my feet. They’re helping me help myself.”

New Lease on Life at York Ave.

Our former headquarters on York Avenue in St. Paul

has been repurposed for program facilities, enabling

several programs to move together into one location

and share resources. This was especially big for our numerous

Homeless Services, which were spread throughout the Twin

Cities. “Co-locating them together has made it much easier

for homeless clients to access

services,” says Geoffrey Meyer,

Division Director for Homeless

Services. “Clients can move easily

between our outreach services, our

drop-in Project Recovery program,

our housing and independent

living support programs, and the

pharmacy, contracted with Genoa,

that enables clients to get their

prescriptions filled easily. We’ll also

shortly be adding a much-needed

client laundry room and shower

facilities. The co-location also

means our staff can work together

much more easily and share ideas

and resources.” Other programs relocated to York Avenue

include our Home Health Agency, Deaf and Hard-of-

Hearing Services, and a Parent Support Clinic.

Crafter? Mentor? Cook? Coach? Give us a call!

We’ve got lots of

new volunteer

opportunities,

led by our new volunteer

coordinator, Katie Burns,

who comes to us from

the Raptor Center at the

University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary

Medicine. “People Incorporated has a great

purpose and it’s very meaningful work for me.

Right now we need people to help us make

holiday cards for clients, so if you’re a crafter,

we need you! We’ve also got some exciting new

projects coming up in mentoring, recreation,

gardening, food/nutrition, and whole-body

health. There are opportunities to help with

mailings and events, too, and corporate or

civic groups are welcome. There’s something

for everyone who wants to get involved.”

Katie will also be serving as the Artability

Coordinator in 2013. For more information or

to volunteer, contact Katie at 651-288-3532

or [email protected].

Mary Kay McJilton knows much more about us than most donors—and she should, having worked at People Incorporated for 33 years, including as Vice President of Operations.

Mary Kay and her husband, Bud, are also two of our most dedicated volunteers. Mary Kay still helps out in recordkeeping, and Bud has volunteered for many years in homeless outreach. They also make regular trips to Buffalo to pick up comforters and other supplies donated to People Incorporated’s homeless programs by a local church.

“We really believe in People Incorporated’s mission and the importance of helping people with mental illness to live in their own homes in the community. Most can with the right kind of support.

“I also know first-hand that People Incorporated puts its clients first—we have outstanding staff who really care and work hard to help each client succeed. Plus People Incorporated is very transparent about where it spends its money, and it’s backed up by the

Charities Review Council’s “Meets Standards” certification.

“If you want to see for yourself, take a tour of some of the programs and see what People Incorporated does every day to help ensure that people with mental illness get the treatment they deserve and are able to live with dignity and hope. It’s a powerful mission that’s changing lives for the better every day.”

Schedule a tour on our homepage at PeopleIncorporated.org.

Dear Friends,

As we all know too well, the past few months have seen several mass shootings committed by persons suffering from mental illness—at a movie theater in Colorado, a mosque in Milwaukee, and a workplace right here in the Twin Cities. These tragic events have generated high-profile media coverage around the country. For the most part, the coverage today is seeking to better understand mental illness, rather than promoting fear of a group of individuals who are no more prone to committing violence than anyone else—a significant change in how mental illness has traditionally been portrayed and reported upon.

This is especially the case in our local media. You may have read or heard Carolyn and Charles Engeldinger sharing the painful story of how their son Andrew fell into a “world of delusion” that culminated in the shooting at Accent Signage. To me, these parents are true heroes. No one could blame them for shrinking away from the nightmare that’s befallen them—a nightmare that began years ago as they tried to help their son, but to no avail. The Engeldingers made a courageous decision to discuss the trials and tribulations of their son’s mental illness in the open, helping us all to gain a better understanding of a topic that’s been taboo for far too long. The Star Tribune also chose to feature their struggle on its front page in a sympathetic manner. This would not have happened twenty years ago, and maybe not even ten years ago.

On a different note, local television news personality Ken Barlow recently shared that he’s been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and the Pioneer Press chose to feature a discussion with Barlow on its front page. Again, Barlow didn’t have to

do this—and the Pioneer Press didn’t have to treat this as front-page news. Barlow’s story has moved Minnesota light-years ahead in the battle to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. It offers hope to those who are suffering and to their loved ones, and engenders understanding and compassion from the rest of us.

At last, our local media is taking the lead on moving mental illness into the mainstream, alongside heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. At last, our clients and their loved ones are getting the support they need, and are able to talk more freely about their struggles with a disease that has been misunderstood for so long.

While we still have a long way to go, it’s rewarding to see how far we have come. I hope you’ll continue to discuss mental illness with your friends and neighbors, and help lead the discussion as to why we need to provide help and support to those who suffer from it. Together, we can continue to make positive change in our community.

Sincerely,

M. Tim Burkett, Ph.D., L.P. CEO

The Mounds Theater in St. Paul

Crowds start to gather for the opening A great night out!

Stars Shine at Artability 2012!The Historic Mounds Theater in St. Paul was the location of this year’s Artability Art Show and Sale, adding a splash of drama with its art-deco design and twinkling lights.

Held September 27-29, the show featured the creations of more than 90 local artists and writers with the aim of celebrating the talents and contributions of people with mental illness. More than 300 people attended the show, and nearly $2,000 of artwork was sold (artists keep 90%; 10% supports the program). The opening was emceed by KARE 11 reporter Rena Sarigianopoulous, and featured a reading by Artability writer Lynn Diane Nerenberg. Thanks to all our volunteers—especially committee members—for making this year’s show such a success!

Want to participate in Artability? It’s open to any adult (18+) with mental illness. Send a note to [email protected] to join the mailing list and receive workshop schedules, entry forms, and other announcements. House-to-Home Event Nets $39,000 for Our Residential Programs Our sixth annual House-to-Home

event on October 28 raised $39,000 to help us furnish our residential programs and keep them comfortable and hope-inspiring for our clients. Held this year at 317 on Rice Park in downtown St. Paul, more than one hundred people enjoyed a supper-club atmosphere, complete with star-lit New York skyline and jazz by local talents Nichola Miller with the Jazz Central All Stars! A new initiative included bidding for garden projects, which will make it possible to develop client gardens at five programs this coming summer. A special thank you to our co-chairs and the House-to-Home committee for their hard work in creating such a special and successful event.

Time for our Holiday Giving Program! It can be tough for our clients to get the warm clothes they need during our harsh Minnesota winters—especially for those living out on the streets. You can help gather these necessities and make the season a little brighter for our clients —just drop off or mail your donations to us by Friday, December 14 (see address above). Suggested items should be new and sized for adults—items that maximize warmth and block the wind are especially critical:

• Winter caps (esp. with ear flaps)

• Thick hiking socks (wool or synthetic)

• Sweatshirts – XL and XXL

• Gift cards to Rainbow, Cub, or Target ($10 cards)

For more information, please contact Kate Krisik at 651.288.3501 or [email protected]. Happy Holidays!
