Dear Parishioners,
No matter how much we have, we tend to want more. No matter how blessed we are, we tend to look at others who have more and be envious. In a practical way, this can be seen simply in our purchases. We buy a new phone, and six months later it is already out of date. We purchase a computer, and one year later it is too slow. We buy a new car, and as we drive it off the parking lot we see another newer model that is more sleek and attractive. It can be part of our human nature that we are never satisfied with what we have — and, if others have more, we think it is unfair.
Today’s gospel reading is a perfect example. The land owner pays a just wage to the people who work all day. But they see the people who only worked a small portion of the time get an equal amount, and they are jealous. It’s not fair! The parable is about the absolute immense generosity of God. He longs for us so much that if we only spend a portion of our time in His service and in His presence, God is thrilled.
So what about the rest of us? Why spend our whole lives trying to be good, trying to do what is right, if God is open to all? Well, first of all, wouldn’t we want to spend our lives serving goodness and love and compassion? Secondly, we never know if we will have the chance to serve God completely if we wait. Next week’s parable will be even more challenging. Because not only is God generous, He is also all-forgiving. Stay tuned!

You Are Invited to Participate in a Rosary Walk “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 16-17
During the month of the Rosary, the Legion of Mary and the Respect Life Committee invite you to join them in participating in a Rosary Walk on Saturday, October 3 at 10:00 AM. We will meet on the front steps of the Little Church at 10:00 AM and then pray a Rosary together — processing behind a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima while walking around the neighborhoods surrounding our church. We pray all will respect the sacred gift of life from conception to natural death and for peace in our world. If you are unable to join us in person, please consider uniting with us in prayer by praying a Rosary from home.
Diocesan Rosary Congress at Sacred Heart Sacred Heart will host our second Diocesan Rosary Congress in the Little Church on Monday, October 5 (with opening Mass at 7:00 PM) through Saturday, October 10 (closing Mass at 4:00 PM). The Rosary Congress is a week-long period of intense prayer consisting of Eucharistic Adoration and hourly Rosary.
It is held in response to Our Lady of Fatima’s call to conversion, consecration, and prayer — and it is offered in a spirit of reparation, for life, peace, and the deep healing of our Church! Churches across the nation will be joined together in prayer. Join us for Rosary (on the hour) or Eucharistic Adoration at any time! Look for updated details next week in the bulletin and parish website about the times and ways to sign up for an hour of Adoration. For more info, please contact Annette Puente at 410-871-9889 or [email protected].

Estimados feligreses,
No importa cuánto tengamos, tendemos a querer más. No

Social Justice and Outreach
Our Daily Bread Casseroles Thank you to everyone who contributes casseroles for Our Daily Bread! We are collecting casseroles this week, so please take a casserole pan or two home with you after any Mass in the Main Church. We are just one of a handful of churches able to reliably support ODB during these unusual times.
To prevent spillage, please double-bag and freeze or refrigerate your casserole before you drop it off. If you can’t make a casserole, please consider donating dry goods such as canned vegetables/fruit, coffee, tea, sugar, peanut butter and jelly, powdered drink mixes, and non-food kitchen items such as paper cups, paper and plastic sandwich bags, and kitchen cleaning materials.
Our volunteers will be at the rear of the school cafeteria on Tuesday evening, September 22 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM and again on Wednesday morning, September 23 from 7:30 – 9:00 AM to collect your casseroles and/or dry goods donations. Please contact Mark Grabenstein at [email protected] or 410-654-0414 for more details.
Our Daily Bread is a soup kitchen in Baltimore City managed by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Sacred Heart supports Our Daily Bread’s ministry of outreach to the hungry by supplying casseroles and other items every month. Click here for the “Zippy Beef” Casserole recipe.
Laudato si’ Year for the Catholic Church To commemorate the fifth anniversary of his encyclical Laudato si’, Pope Francis announced that the period between May 24, 2020 and May 24, 2021 will be designated as Laudato si’ Year for the Catholic Church.
Laudato si’ in English • Laudato si’ in Spanish
A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion, and concern for our fellow human beings. Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society. (LS #91)
• How do you develop the qualities of tenderness, compassion, and concern? How have these qualities enriched your life and the lives of others?
Sacramental Ministry

Best Years Group
Best Years is Sacred Heart’s group for those 55 or older. There are no other requirements for becoming a member. Previously before the coronavirus, Best Years meetings were on the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM in the Mother Seton Room. Meetings usually include a speaker or some other activity, including refreshments. Dues are only $5 a year. The group warmly invites all eligible seniors to join. For more information, contact President Bert Tromble at 410-861-6532.
Please read the bulletin for an announcement as to when the Best Years Group will be meeting again.
Martha’s Ministry While we are not yet able to gather as a group, we are together in spirit. These last several months of being apart from family and friends have been a challenge for many, especially our Best Years members who may live alone. We encourage all members to stay connected by phone or email with friends. If you know of anyone who is experiencing an illness or injury, our Martha’s Ministry is still available to any Best Years member. This ministry team of volunteers provides one hot meal each week for up to 6 weeks during recovery. Members can call Judi Behnken at 410-833-0182 to make arrangements for this service.
New Book by Charles Anderson Dorothy and Charles Anderson were long-time members of Sacred Heart and of Best Years. Those who knew
them can attest to Charlie’s vast knowledge of horticulture — hollies in particular. In fact, all of the holly trees and shrubs on our parish campus are the work of Charlie’s design. He was also an avid writer. After his death, his children found many letters to Dorothy written during war time and also detailed journals of his experiences in service and as an environmentalist around
the world. These letters and journal entries have been compiled and published posthumously in Charlie’s memory. The book is titled, “Sailor to Environmentalist, A Memoir of Charles R. Anderson”. It is available on Amazon or Kindle for anyone who is interested.
Document Shredding Event Knights of Columbus Immaculate Lady Council has hired a commercial on-site shredding company to visit Sacred Heart on Saturday, September 26 from 9:00 – 11:00 AM. Bring your unwanted or obsolete documents to the school-side parking lot to be shredded free of charge. The Knights will take them from your car (you don’t have to leave your vehicle) and hand them over to be shredded.
A free-will donation bucket will be available to help support future ongoing KofC activities. For more details, contact Grand Knight Dave Clement at 443-340-0931 or [email protected].

Anointing of the Sick
In case of emergency call the Parish Office/Rectory at anytime. Please notify the Parish Office if you know someone in the hospital or at home who wishes to be anointed. Masses of Anointing are celebrated several times a year.
Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults “Thirsting for God?” Do you know someone not baptized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?
Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet received Confirmation and Communion? They may be thirsting, too! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a place to ask questions and seek understanding.
The RCIA is a Church rite for adults pursuing the possibility of joining the Roman Catholic Church. If you, or someone you know, are interested or would like more information, please contact Michele Hunter at 410-833-1696 or
Adult Faith Formation
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Are you or a loved one interested in becoming Catholic? If so, I encourage you and invite you to check out the formal welcoming process into the Church — the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
RCIA is an ancient tradition in the Church in which a person is introduced and exposed to the richness of our prayer, history, worship, beliefs, and morality. It is a process where you will grow in faith and wisdom on the path to full communion with the Catholic Church. It culminates on the greatest feast of the year — the Easter Vigil — in which Baptism (if necessary), Confirmation, and first Communion take place. Anyone not already baptized (in any Christian denomination) or not already confirmed Catholic is a candidate for RCIA. If this is you, why wait any longer to join one of the greatest gifts God has given us: the Church that Jesus Christ established! For more information, please contact Michele Hunter at [email protected] or 410-833-1696 — or visit www.shgparish.org/becoming-catholic.
Small Group Opportunity:
“Boundaries” Do you have trouble saying “no”? Can you set limits and still be a loving person? Are you in control of your life? Do people take advantage of you? Healthy relationships and sound
living depend on maintaining effective personal boundaries, but many people don’t know where to start. We are running a nine-session small group study, Boundaries, by Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend starting in October (over Zoom). Morning (Mondays) and evening (Wednesdays) sessions will be available. This study uncovers the secrets to cultivating the habit of setting and maintaining healthy boundaries that provide the framework for rich, productive relationships.
Based on the bestselling book by Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, these nine interactive sessions can make a life-changing difference. Drawing on principles from the Bible, Boundaries guides small groups on a journey of discovery and practical application. As a participant, you’ll learn how to live your life more fully and display truth and love more freely. Each of the nine Boundaries sessions in the Participant Guide corresponds with a video presentation by Drs. Cloud and Townsend. It’s the centerpiece for insights, exercises, and spirited group discussion that can profoundly improve the quality of your relationships in every sphere of life ― marriage, family, friendships, church, and the workplace. The Boundaries workbook gives a biblical foundation and practical tools for helping others respect your boundaries. This interactive workbook helps you look at specific relationships in your own life. With those situations in mind, you can ask and answer:
• Why do I feel guilty about setting clear boundaries?
• What if the boundaries I set hurt the other person?
• Is it difficult for me to hear “no” from others?
• What are examples of legitimate boundaries at work and home?
• How can I have good boundaries online?
Please contact Michele Hunter at [email protected] with questions or to sign up. We ask that a donation of $11 be made to cover the cost of materials. (You will receive your own participant’s guide.)

Catechetical Sunday — September 20 The ministry of the Word is a fundamental element of evangelization through all its stages because it involves the proclamation of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God.
Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday?
In 1935, the Vatican published On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Education, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teaching ministry and to honor those who serve the Christian community as catechists. For the first few years after Catechetical Sunday was established, national catechetical congresses were held in conjunction with the celebration. Beginning in 1971, the USCCB’s Department of Education began producing materials to help parishes celebrate the event at the local level. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday.
Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.
What does the word “catechetical” mean?
The word might be more familiar than you think. Many Catholics have used the word “catechism” for years, and they know it has something to do with the compendium of the Church’s teachings. The root word, “catechesis,” is from a Greek word meaning “to echo, or resound.” Catechesis is the act of resounding or bringing the Church’s teachings to the world. A catechist is one who teaches in the name of the Church.
Why do we have a special day set aside to commission catechists?
Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life . . . her inner growth and correspondence with God’s plan depend essentially on catechesis” (CCC #7). This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally
commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others.
How are parents, the primary catechists of their children, recognized on Catechetical Sunday?
Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of blessing of catechists used on Catechetical Sunday includes an optional blessing of parents and guardians.
A Catechist’s Prayer Loving Father, pour forth your Holy Spirit upon me that I may be a good catechist of your Word, your Son, Jesus Christ.
Render my mind and heart so open, receptive, and responsive to your Holy Spirit that, like Mary, I might become a living instrument of your Word to others. Help me to be a faithful witness to Gospel life so that your Church may become ever more alive.
Let the fire of your love so enkindle my heart that I may be an instrument of drawing others to love of you in the Church of your Son.
I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Respect Life
The Sacred Heart Respect Life Committee encourages you to stand up for
Respect for the Sacred Gift of Life from conception to natural death when voting.
The following statements are taken directly from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops — Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, Part I: The U.S. Bishops’ Reflection on Catholic Teaching and Political Life.
2. The political realities of our nation present us with opportunities and challenges. We are a nation
founded on “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” but the right to life itself is not fully
protected, especially for unborn children, the terminally ill, and the elderly, the most
vulnerable members of the American family.
7. Our purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God’s truth.
13. In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a
moral obligation. “People in every nation enhance the social dimension of their lives by acting as
committed and responsible citizens” (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 220). The obligation to participate in
political life is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness
in all we do. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “It is necessary that all participate,
each according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This obligation is inherent in
the dignity of the human person....As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life”
(CCC #1913-1915).
44. Human life is sacred. The dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for
society. Direct attacks on innocent persons are never morally acceptable, at any stage or in any
condition in our society; human life is especially under attack from abortion, which some political
actors mischaracterize as an issue of “women’s health.” Other direct threats to the sanctity of human
life include euthanasia and assisted suicide (sometimes falsely labelled as “death with dignity”), human
cloning, in vitro fertilization, and the destruction of human embryo for research.
“All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, strike at the house’s
foundation.” (Living the Gospel of Life, no. 22)

“We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we
hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not
true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by
offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern.”
‒ Pope Francis, 9/16/2013
