Pastor’s Poetry Post-Its

“John the Baptist”

John the Baptist guides us through the early weeks of Advent to find Jesus, the Messiah. John is a bridge between the Old and New Testaments. He is the last of Israel’s prophets and the first of the New Age of salvation. His was the voice crying out in the wilderness to make way for the Lord. He leads us through the wilderness of Christmas frenzy to remind us that it is still Advent and not Christmas yet. We take our cues not from the holiday shopping schedule but from the Gospel. Jesus has already come into the world and Advent prepares us for the excitement of experiencing the mystery that the Savior has been born. We have these Advent weeks of anticipation to reflect on the difference His birth makes in our daily lives.

“LESSONS & CAROLS”

An Evening of Advent Music and

Scripture Readings

This Sunday night, December 10th at 7:30 PM the Music Ministry is presenting our fourteenth annual Lessons and Carols.

The Music Ministry with several of our parish lectors and our pastoral team combine talents to create a service of scripture and song that will lead you from prophecy to fulfillment, from Old Testament foretelling to a birthday celebration.

Through the years, the service has undergone additions and revisions, but its original intention, showing the loving purpose of God from the fall of man, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus told through Bible readings (lessons) interspersed with hymns (carols) has been maintained.

The parish musicians, the Adult, Teen, and Junior choirs have been working together to make this a memorable evening for all. We hope you will join us for this special evening of song and prayer in preparation for the holy season of Christmas. A reception will follow in the social hall. All are welcome !!

Come and bring a friend!

For the month of December, the Food Pantry is need of

the following donations:

Christmas Candy & Cookies, Cake Mix & Icing, Chef Boyardee Products, Canned Tuna, Pasta Sauce,

Oatmeal, Crackers, Rice, Jello, Pudding Mix, Ketchup, Salad Dressing

THE GIVING TREE All gifts must be new and wrapped. Please remember that if you do not return the gift, that person will not receive anything. All gifts must be received by Monday, December 11th.

Today is the Second Sunday of Advent. Time to light our Second Candle! We started the Advent Season in such a beautiful way. Last Sunday, Mrs. Graj’s Third Grade Class gathered us into prayer and led us in the Rosary before we celebrated the 11am Family Mass. The children were all so reverent and prayerful as they carried our 20 foot pair of Rosary Beads. The Rosary is such a popular devotion during the Advent Season and helps us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. During Advent we encourage all of you to mediate on the Joyful Mysteries.

There are so many great things being done in our classrooms in order to focus on the Reason for the Season. Our Catechists and Assistants are guiding our children in Prayer, Service Projects, Classroom Lessons and Activities, Skits and Songs. The entire Program is collecting donations for St. Vincent’s Psychiatric Hospital in Harrison and the Williamsbridge Manor Nursing Home in the Bronx.

Please support us as we teach the difference between Advent and Christmas. Our Classrooms have Advent Wreaths, Advent Calendars, empty crèches, and we have an unlit, undecorated evergreen tree. We are moving very slowly with our decorations. Why? The students will tell you that it is not the Christmas Season yet….it is Advent! We are focusing on the word that Fr. Burns used in his homily last week, ‘ANTICIPATION.”

We anticipate the coming of Jesus at Christmas and we anticipate the coming Jesus at the end of time. Remember some very important ways to do this are to pray, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and to attend Mass.

As we journey through this Advent Season let us pray for each other!

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 10, 2017

First Reading: Isaiah 11:1-10 In this beautiful passage, a messianic prophecy, Isaiah exults in the coming of the Lord, who will bring justice and peace for all. Second Reading: Romans 15:4-9 Paul reveals to us the necessity of living in peace and harmony. His words “Accept one another, then, as Christ ac-cepted you, for the Glory of God” are as needed today as they were in Paul’s own time. Gospel: Matthew 3:1-12 John the Baptizer prepares the way for Jesus. Clothed in a garment of camel’s hair, he baptizes the people in the Jordan River, but warns the Pharisees in ringing tones that they must give evidence that they mean to reform.
