Whole School Assembly, Tuesday 30 November

Last Tuesday, we held a whole school assembly in our gymnasium. It was pleasing to have parents and

family members join us for the assembly. During the Assembly, the three 2018 Grade 9 School

Association Representatives, the 2018 Student Leadership Team and all results from our recent carnival

were announced. I always have mixed feelings about Student Leadership, where we are extremely

happy for those students who are elected, and disappointed for the students who miss out. I

congratulate every student for showing the resilience to nominate for leadership positions.

Congratulations to the following students, and I hope you thrive in your leadership positions:

2018 Student Leadership Team - Ashtyn Dennison, Arabella Catlin, Lily Blackaby, Molly

Carter, Hannah Blackburn, Brooke Stephenson, Amy Jones, Sarsha Flack, Jorja Hoare, Febey

Mitchell, Courtney Bieman, Taylor Sherriff, Brady Rouse, Trent Williams, Logan Howe, Magnus

Overdijk, Cody Porter, Declan Porter, Lochie Holland and Luke Brydon.

School Association Representatives – In 2018 we have three representatives, as two students had

received the same number of votes: Belle Needham, Oliver Lancaster and Tess Horton.

Congratulations!!

After the leadership presentations, we announced the results from the Athletic Carnival, where we

acknowledged individual and group achievement. Please see the ‘HPE Hot Spot’ for all the results.

Social Media and Sexting

At a separate boys and girls assembly held on Monday, we talked in detail to girls and boys about

sexting. We asked students to shut their eyes and to answer yes by placing their hand up to the

following questions:

Do you personally know someone who has sent a sexually explicit photo?

Do you personally know someone who has asked someone else to send a sexually explicit photo?

Close to 100% of girls placed their hand up to at least one of the questions and close to 80% of boys

placed their hand up. We made all students aware of the state and federal laws regarding sending

sexual images and also talked about the importance of being respectful to themselves and others. On

the few occasions I have had to speak with parents about their son’s or daughter’s involvement in either sending or asking for sexual or nude images, on every occasion, parents have been shocked and couldn’t

believe that their son or daughter would be involved. I have included a brochure on the next page

explaining what the rules and regulations are. As well as being charged for crimes around sexting,

students could find themselves on the Australian National Child Offender Register. Please discuss the

seriousness of this with your son or daughter.

AARON HUMPHREY

GRADE 7 COORDINATOR

Well done to all Grade 7’s who participated in the Inter-High Athletics Team yesterday: Dove Smith,

Keisha Williams, Abby Brown, Aaliah Dennison, Lily Johnson, Ashlea Dowling, Tara Steers,

Will Sanderson, Roman Jopson, Jack Barber, Liam O’Callaghan, Jake Grubb, Blake Lidster,

Toby Rockliff and Jed Broomhall. The students performed extremely well with many running much

better at the Penguin Athletics Centre than they did at our school carnival, showing excellent

determination for team success.

With only 2 weeks remaining, it is important that all students continue to strive for excellence and work

towards setting great study habits to set them up for 2018. This includes being organised for class,

completing assessment tasks and working together to the best of their ability.

Our last week of school is known as activities week. Students will be engaged in a variety of activities,

information was handed out to students to take home on Wednesday.

Activities will be as follows:

Monday- Grade 7 students will be spending the day in Launceston shopping.

Tuesday– Day at school. Students will be in two groups with the activities including watching a movie,

playing sport or on the computers. Wednesday– Students will be in two groups, going to target golf in Forth and Ten Pin Bowling in

Devonport. At the half way point, both groups will come together and go to Ulverstone Dinosaur Park

for lunch.

Students have their last taster lesson next Wednesday. We hope they have enjoyed their lessons and

experienced what Art, MDT, Drama, Music and Cooking has to offer which will hopefully assist their PI

selections for 2018.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS

Our Grade 7 girl’s touch football team (Sarge) have formed a strong team in the

summer roster and have improved through-out the weeks! Well done girls!

RESILIENCE

It was great to see students continue to work hard whilst

in class and keep their enthusiasm to succeed going into

the summer holidays!

LEARNING

Students in 7A were watching Lion in their class this week after studying the

book for many weeks.

RESPECT

Students are showcasing the new school hats during break times and it is great

to see the students being respectful by taking their hats off in class.

GRADE 8 REPORT

Term 4 is passing by at a rapid rate and plenty of things have been happening in and out of the

classroom. The following students have received Strength Awards – well done and keep up the great

work!

Rhiannon Currie, Maddison McClure, Becky Bentley, Danika Hall, Rhiannon Evans, Emily

Barber, Brielle Geard, James Carter, Jonty Armitstead, Quintin Walker, Griffin Larsen,

Tayden Lyall, Holden Jago, Cameron Hill, Adrian Cooper, Ben Carey and Brandi Atkins.

The Athletic Carnival was recently held and the Grade

8’s participated whole heartedly over the course of the

two days. There were many impressive performances

and a lot of enjoyment demonstrated by all. The

conduct and behaviour of our grade was once again

excellent!

Special congratulations go to Piper Catlin who

successfully broke the Grade 8 girls’ javelin record!

LATROBE HIGH SCHOOL, SCHOOL

ASSOCIATION STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES

Congratulations to Belle Needham, Oliver Lancaster and

Tess Horton, who have each won positions as Student

Representatives for Latrobe High School, School Association.

It is the first year we have had three students elected which is

indicative of the quality of the nominees who put themselves

up for election. Here is what each of our new representatives

had to say about their new roles:

Oliver Lancaster – I am looking forward to being a voice for

students and getting involved with the community. I would like

to learn and grow as I represent not only students, but our

whole school.

Belle Needham – Being able to contribute to our school in a

positive way and setting a good example are some of the many things I am looking forward to as I begin my leadership

journey.

Tess Horton – What I am really looking forward to getting

out of this position is real experience in developing my

leadership skills and being a voice for my peers. I am honoured

to be elected and it will be a life skill building opportunity for

me.

imperative that good work habits are maintained.

SPEEDWAY – GO CARTS 2017-18

Speedway Karts has been building strongly into our third round of the 2017-18 season. In the Junior

Class you can expect to see up to 28 karts show up on a night with this being one of the biggest

fields we’ve had in a long time.

We have both been racing for 3 years now, each having won heats and making podium finishes in

feature races. In the State Titles at Latrobe Independent Oils Raceway last year we were both

fortunate enough to have placed in the 15 lap feature with Mahtia T88 coming in 4th and Kaylee T73

placing on the podium in 3rd position.

We have both improved a lot over the past 3 years of racing and with the State Titles coming up on

the 6th January in Hobart, we both are hoping to regain or improve on our performances. We also

look forward to many more races ahead with some of our big shows coming up like the Grand

National and Grand Prix.

Kaylee Thompson and Mahtia Bissett.

Congratulations girls and we wish you well!

GRADE 9 REPORT

As the term continues to fly by, I encourage all students to finish the year off strongly and continue to

work towards a mature work ethic. A reminder that assessment continues until Friday 15 December; it

will be disappointing if a report reflects a lack of effort during the last few weeks, undermining the hard

work that has been done all semester. I would like to acknowledge the great work that students are

doing in class and this is evident by the amount of strength awards that I see.

Activities Week information has been sent home. Please read through the information and return the

permission slip to our school office as soon as possible.

During our PI5 option, we have been focussing on building positive relationships. Here are some photos

of our recent activities.

If you have any queries regarding your child, please contact me via email:

GRADE 9 COORDINATOR

This week Grade 10 students completed one of the final steps of their transition to Don College

before they commence in 2018. They visited Don College for ‘Start’ day on Tuesday, where they

attended two of the classes that they will be enrolled in next year. It was a great opportunity for

students to meet their 2018 teacher and some of their peers from other high schools. On Wednesday

staff from YFCC visited the school to run iParty with Grade 10 students. iParty educates students

about the risks involved with partying, drinking, drug use and safe sex. This program ensures students

are equipped with the appropriate information to make informed decisions.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Tuesday November 21 and Wednesday November 22, Latrobe High School held our annual Athletics

Carnival. The atmosphere was fantastic and the student’s participation levels were extremely high. We

had three records broken this year with Arabella Gillies breaking the Grade 10 Shot Put record and

also the Grade 10 Javelin Record, Piper Catlin also broke the Grade 8 Javelin record.

The house competition was a close affair with Orion taking an early lead after the school 1500m trials.

Orion were able to stay strong through-out the two days to maintain their lead and win their first

carnival of the year.

National School Athletic Championships

On Saturday December 9, Latrobe High School have 7 students representing the school on the national

stage. Darcy, Ashtyn, Tess, Courtney, Piper, Briealee and Molly (pictured in their new racing

singlets) will be competing on Monday December 11 at Santos Stadium in Adelaide. The format of the

day is to place as well as possible in their respective events, for maximum points, and the team with the

most points at the end of the day is the winner. The girls have been fundraising extremely hard at

school with icy poles, saveloys and bbq’s assisting with the costs associated with the event. They have

also received some fantastic donations from the Latrobe Council and Mike Gaffney. A fantastic donation

was received from Mrs Fantarella and her husband which will assist the team immensely with their

associated travel costs! The girls have also featured heavily in the Advocate newspaper and are forever

grateful to everyone for their well wishes and support before they embark on the national stage.
