T.J. Ray of Schleswig has a lot of good memories inhis 20-plus years as a racing flagman, but the 48-year-old married father of two daughters is looking to createeven more when racing returns full-throttle to the Craw-ford County Speedway in Denison on Friday, May 11.

“It’s just awesome,” said Ray, when asked of his feel-ings about the return of a weekly racing schedule at theCCS. “I’ve flagged at tracks in Allison, Harlan, WebsterCity and even Jefferson City, South Dakota, but none ofthem bring back the memories that I’ve had working atthe Denison track,” stated Ray, who currently is in histhird year at the Mr. Tire Service Center in Ida Grove.

“The racing association has done a tremendous job inevery aspect. Getting sponsors is never easy. They de-serve a lot of credit,” Ray said. So what does a flagmando? “The flagman starts races and tries to keep an eyeson all of the cars, checking for unnecessary driving andjust making sure there’s not a lot of havoc on the track,”said Ray, who pointed out that a good flagman’s job isto keep the show rolling and just get the night in withas few problems as possible.

Ray also said that a trait of a good flagman is to keepyour temper at home and not play favorites. “Over theyears, I’ve probably lost my temper too much, but that’sin the past now. You have to be consistent with yourcalls, and that’s the number one thing I’ve learned overthe years,” Ray said.

Memories? “I’ve had opportunities over the years to flag for some

outstanding drivers, including Billy Moyer and ScottBloomquist at Denison,” Ray said.

“My fondest memory from flagging in Denison, though, was probably the night that Denny Hovingaretired from racing. I’ll never forget being a part of that,”remarked Ray, whose wife, Diana, works at CDS in Har-lan.

Ray and Diana have two daughters: 28-year-old KatieJo Carlson of Norwalk, and 19-year-old Samantha, whoattends Xenon International School of Hair Design inOmaha, Nebraska. Katie Jo is married to Chris Carlsonand works at Principal Financial in Des Moines. Chrisand Katie Jo are the parents of one boy, two-year-oldMaverick.

With opening night just a week away, Ray is antici-pating a great season ahead for all involved at Denison.“Hopefully, we get good car counts and a lot of peoplein the stands,” Ray said.

“I’ll say it again, the racing association has done atremendous job in setting the stage.” “The admissionprices are competitive. Every class has a sponsor. Thepayouts are better at Denison than at a lot of the othertracks. Really, Denison has everything working in itsfavor. I hope the people get out and support their fa-vorite drivers,” Ray said. T.J. Junior Reetz

Racing is back at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison. A full13-week schedule will kick off Friday, May 11, with Joe’s Karting Nightat the Races Tribute to Mothers.

Action will continue each Friday after that with the season champi-onships scheduled for the final night of competition on Aug. 3.

“It’s a very exciting time for area racing fans,” said Junior Reetz, thenew race director of the Crawford County Speedway.

“I had a guy come to me and ask if I wanted to be the race director, and I told him I could give it a try,” said Reetz, an avid race car driverfor years with several relatives in the sport, including brother Craig ofDunlap and cousins Bill Reetz of Carroll and Steve Reetz of Arcadia.Craig runs Modifieds, while Bill runs Stock Cars and Steve Sport Mods.

“I’ve been involved with racing for about 50 years,” said the 52-year-old Ullrich Farms employee. “My dad started racing when I was just alittle boy. After high school, I got into figure-eight racing and took partin some demolition derbys.”

According to Reetz, fans will notice right away the improvementsmade to the 4/10th-mile dirt track and facility that will hopefully hostlarge cheering crowds when the racing season begins in just a week.

“We’ve shortened the track quite a bit, probably 300 feet or so. Wehad a practice day back in October and the drivers really seemed to likeit, so we decided to make a go of it and now we’ll see if we can bringsome business to Denison,” Reetz added.

Leading the drive to get racing back in Denison was a group of 25 in-vestors, including several area businessmen, farmers and race enthu-siasts who cooperated their efforts to make sure the dream of many be-come a reality.

“There also was a lot of interest among the small towns in the area.A lot of them bought billboards at the speedway,” remarked Reetz, whosaid that there should be 50-plus billboards ready to greet The last timethe CCS hosted a full schedule of racing was in 2003.

“For some reason, I just think there’s a lot more interest than therewas before. People are really talking about it,” said Reetz, who said an-other benefit is a shortened season. “We’re going from May to August

ModifiedsThe IMCA Modifieds have become the calling card of the IMCA.The high-flying, open-wheel stock cars push limits of power and excitement on

short tracks from coast to coast. Modifieds have gained a reputation for fierce com-petitiveness that is as unique as the car itself.

Late ModelsLate Models are the epitome of full-bodied stock car racing. They feature many

of IMCA’s top drivers competing weekly at premier racing facilities.Late Models are increasing in popularity because of the simple economics of the

spec engine and tire rule.

Stock CarsOne of IKMA’s most popular classes. Stock Cars are synonymous with fast-paced

excitement and known for their identifiable, full-bodied appearance. They offerfender-banging thrills and chills that keep fans coming back for more.

Hobby StocksIMCA also features an entry-level division of full-sized cars, the IMCA Hobby

Stocks. The division gives competitors the chance to experiment with the sport atthe lowest possible cost, while still experiencing the rush that only IMCA racing canprovide.

Sprint CarsThe IMCA Sprint Car boasts its own special appeal for racing enthusiasts. The

Sprint Car features the traditional non-winged, as well as winged machines withopen wheels and an open cockpit. The cars have entertained race fans across thecountry with their own brand of raw power and high speed.

Sport ModsAn entry-level division. Sport Mods gives new competitors the chance to exper-

iment with modified racing at the lowest possible cost.

Sport CompactsA true entry-level divison. Sport Compacts are not race cars, they are cars that

race. They can purchased off the street or at a salvage yard. The division is foryounger drivers, not those that want to get out of late models or modifieds.

There is a minimum age of 14. No one in this division can be licensed to com-pete in any other IMCA division.

By Steve Speake

• 1908. The famed New York-to-Paris Automobile Race passes through town to the delight of thousands who lined the bottom road to catch a glimpse of thenew contraptions. Plans for the Lincoln Highway are still five years away. • 1949. A new covered grandstand is built at the new fairgrounds just west of town. On August 10, a crowd of 10,000 packed the grounds for a picnic, gamesand the featured entertainment: Jalopy Races. • Circa 1949-1954. The (Highway) 59-30 Speedway operates in a natural bowl just south of the present-day Cinema Four Theatre, filling a need for circle-trackauto racing since the fairgrounds track was exclusively for horses. Hall-of-Fame racers Johnny Beauchamp and Tiny Lund would take on the local drivers like WallyAuen and others. • Fair Time, 1950. The Crawford County Fair stages its first race card and the Chitwood Thrill Show • 1950-1964. These years saw IMCA Stock and Big Car (open wheeled) racing each year and attracted the likes of Ramo Stott, Ernie Derr, Pete Folse and Jan Op-perman. • 1962. A young Johnny Rutherford edges Folse for the Big Car win in the annual County Fair Feature. Rutherford would go on to win the Indianapolis 500three times. • 1966. A new dawning at the fairgrounds was about to happen as a weekly racing card began on June 11 with twenty-one race cars and 3,284 excited fans. • 1967. New wooden bleachers were inaugurated on opening night and attendance the next two years would routinely surpass the population of Denison(4,980) and the car count would reach over 100. • June 8, 1968. John Keating of Charter Oak is killed after rolling his stock car. • 1972. Blindsided by the Mideast oil crisis and other factors, no races were held in 1972—not even during the County Fair—for the only time in the last 62years. • 1989. A re-birth of weekly racing sees the Stock Cars joined by the eras new and more powerful cousin: the Modified. • 1996. NASCAR debuts with its Weekly Racing Series and its premier dirt traveling series: The Busch All-Star Tour. The Jim Dandy 50 season opener is won byWilly Kraft of Northfield, MN. Mark Wyman of Papillion, NE is the NASCAR WRS champion. • 1999. A new catch wall, new scoreboard and other improvements are made. • September 30, 2000. An exciting Busch Tour night turns somber as investment advisor Dwight Wrich of Kennard, NE. is fatally burned in a grand national latemodel mishap. Days later, Wrich’s eleven-year-old daughter plays the piano at her fathers funeral as hundreds of race fans mourn. • July 9, 2001. Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR., wins the Graham Trailers 40 UMP Late Model Feature and pockets $10,000, the largest payout in CCS history.Scott Bloomquist of Moorseville, TN., is clocked at 129 mph on the tracks radar gun. • 2002. The season opens with a shiny, new grandstand but with no sanction as the NASCAR banner is dropped • June 25, 2002. This Tuesday night UDTRA Late Model event is recorded and televised nationally by The Speed Channel. It remains the only nationally tele-vised event to originate in Denison • 2003 to Present. Special County Fair races and Figure 8 races dot the summer calender • 2012. The return of weekly racing looms. The .625 mile track is shortened in an attempt to be more “racer friendly”.

Crawford County SpeedwayRacing Timeline

Page 12: Crawford County Speedway

A full schedule of racing at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison will beginin early May and run through early August. The interest to see racing return to theCCS has been widespread. Among them anxiously awaiting the first night of actionon Friday, May 11, is 79-year-old Bill Clegg of Algona, one of six men who promot-ed the track in the mid-1960s.

Clegg will turn 80 in October. “We had a good thing back then. We had a great crewand we all worked very well together,” said Clegg in a recent interview with the Deni-son Bulletin and Review from his home in Algona.

“Walter Jaacks was president of the fair board at the time, and we had a great work-ing relationship,” added Clegg, who also promoted a very successful track at Alta dur-ing the same time period.

Clegg promoted the CCC along with Dick Simpson, Jim Stangel, Jim Modrell, LarryCook and Jim Pingel. Simpson, according to Clegg, passed away nearly 25 years agodue to a heart problem. “The others are all doing well,” Clegg said.

“We made a lot of improvements and the track made money. We had great crowds, and I think people appreciated the fact that we took the time and effort to make surea good product was offered every week,” Clegg said. “I have a lot of good memories. From what I can remember, everyone worked really well together. We had a lot ofgood relationships,” he added. Racing, as everyone knows, though, can have itsnot-so-good moments.

Clegg had one of those during his time at Denison. “A truck driver from CharterOak lost his live during a race. That bothered everyone. It was a tragedy. It’s some-thing you never want to see as a promoter,” noted Clegg, who stressed the impor-tance of safety with each of his racers before every event.

“We checked the cars over with a fine-toothed comb. If we found anything that wethought was a safety hazard, we didn’t let them race,” Clegg said. “That was a bigpart of our job. It was a safety issue and all of the drivers understood that. We toldthem what needed to be fixed, and a week later they were back at the track ready torace. There were no hard feelings,” added Clegg. The CCS on race nights (Saturday)back then hosted anywhere from 60 to 80 cars, according to Clegg.

“We had a few nights with 100 cars. We ran a good program. It was great to seeeveryone working together,” Clegg said. “We also had a great fan base. The fans re-ally came out week after week and supported not only their favorite drivers, but allof the racers. The racers, I think, appreciated that, and that’s what kept them com-ing back week after week.”

Clegg said that a couple of favorite drivers at the time were Butch Householder andDenny Hovinga. “I think Hovinga is still racing today,” Clegg remarked. “Anotherpopular driver was Mike Chapman of Harlan. He was always a strong runner andfinished among the top two or three every week it seemed like.”

According to Clegg, the cost of racing has probably been the biggest difference overthe years. “Things were a lot simpler and obviously less expensive back then, but itstill wasn’t cheap to run a race car. It’s nothing like today, though, where you needresources to keep driving,” Clegg said.

Clegg remarked that his time spent at the CCS will always be remembered as someof the best years of his life. “Just the people and all of the friendships that developed.I built a lot of relationships that still exist today. And a lot of good memories,” Cleggstated.

“I had a lot of help as well. Lamont Wellendorf partnered with me, and he had ransuccessful racing programs in Algona and Mason City. He brought a lot to the tablein Denison. He was on the judging stand every night with me,” Clegg noted.

Twin brothers Keagan and Logan Scott of Odebolt are anxiously awaiting the open-ing night of racing at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison. Keagan and Logan, both 17 and juniors at Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove High School, will bedriving Sport Modifieds when the new CCS season kicks off on Friday, May 11.

It will be the second year of competition in the Sport Modifieds class for both driv-ers after the two got their feet wet a year ago racing at tracks in Wisconsin, Illinoisand Missouri.

“We’ve been involved in racing since we were six or seven. Heck, I think we werelike three or four when dad got us started driving go-carts in the backyard,” said Kea-gan. “We literally grew up at the Crawford County Speedway. We’re here every Fri-day night. I can’t remember the last time we missed a race,” remarked Logan.

Keagan and Logan are the sons of John and Linda Scott. John farms with his broth-er, Jeff, and is a member of the Crawford County Fair Board. Linda operates a hair salonin Wall Lake.

Both brothers said it’s the thrill of racing that keeps them going. “It’s just an adren-

aline rush. It’s a lot of fun being able to drive 90-plus miles per hour into the curves,”said Keagan. “It would be nice someday to race in the sprint cup. Right now, we’reworking up to driving late models,” noted Logan. Both also sport competitive na-tures. “Yeah, we both like to compete. On the track we get after it pretty good, but atthe same time, we look out for each other and know that we have each other’s back,”remarked Keagn.

Besides racing at the CCS on Friday nights, the two brothers will also race at theBuena Vista Raceway in Alta on Wednesday nights and the Shelby County Speedwayin Harlan on Saturday nights.

With opening night only a week away, the two brothers are anxiously optimistic inlooking ahead to a successful 2012 season. “I have a good feeling about this season.I learned a lot a year ago, so I’m a lot more confident going into this year. I’m readyto let it loose,” said Keagan.

“I also feel pretty good about the new season. I’m looking forward to making a runat the track championship,” Logan said.

REETZ, from Page 6

when usually the season goes from April to September, so we’re wat-ing until after school is out and we’ll quit racing before school beginsnext fall,” Reetz said. Friday night racing. Is it the best night? “I thinkso,” Reetz stated.

“The closest they race on Friday nights is Des Moines and Omaha,so there really shouldn’t be a lot of competition for us in getting driv-ers to come to Denison. “They run NASCAR in Omaha. Des Moines willbe IMCA, but that shouldn’t affect us here. Fort Dodge will race on Fri-day nights, but they’re not IMCA-sanctioned.”

“Alta races on Wednesday nights, so hopefully we’ll be able to bringin cars from there. Harlan is only 25 miles away and they race on Sat-urday nights, so I’m pretty optimistic that we’re going to have goodnumbers on Friday nights,” Reetz stated.

Speaking of numbers, Reetz said he’s hoping to have in the neigh-borhood of 90-plus cars race at the CCS each week.

“I would be very happy with that. Our payouts are probably $100more than a lot of tracks, so we’re paying very well. That should at-tact a lot of drivers every week,” Reetz noted.

The CCS will enforce IMCA rules. So what can fans expect when they head to the CCS for the first time

on May 11? “Hopefully, they see a lot of cars and a lot of action. Theshortening of the track and taking some of the bank away will put theracers a lot closer to the grandstands. We should be able go three-widewith our cars, which will make it very exciting for them and the fans,”Reetz said.

And the price of admission can’t be beat, according to Reetz. “Theprices are the same as they were 10 years ago. With what we’re charg-ing, I see no reason why we shouldn’t be able to fill at least half of thegrandstands if not more. It’s really a great bargain for families on aFriday night,” Reetz said. “The anticipation for opening night is veryhigh,” according to Reetz. “I’m ready. I wish we could start tomorrow.I work for Ullrich farms, so I really need to thank Chris (Ullrich) andhis family for giving me time off to get work done at the track,” Reetzsaid.

“Like I mentioned before, I’m excited. I think a lot of people are ex-cited and anxious to get the season going. It’s going to be a good thingfor Denison,” Reetz noted.

Reeetz also wanted to thank the Denison Bulletin and Review,Krohnke Construction for building the track, Denison Municipal Util-ities for putting up the lights, and everyone that purchased billboardsand helping with the track.
