Livestock Quality Assurance Workshops

February 18 & 20, 6:00 PM, Cuba Church of Christ—Hwy. 19 S.

All 4-H members enrolled in food animal (beef, dairy, sheep, goat, swine, poultry and

rabbits) projects must complete 2 consecutive years of this training and then a final

training at age 14 to be considered a member in good standing in that project.

Two trainings are provided to try to accommodate everyone. Please let Karen know at

573-775-2135 if neither of these dates work and we’ll connect you to another county for

training dates.

State 4-H Photo Corps

Congratulations to Heather Gahr and Paige Cottrell who were recently selected for the 2014 State 4-H Photo Corps! This is quite an honor. We look forward to seeing your photos and hope you will photograph some of our local 4-H club events as well.

Race to the Rocker

4-H Clubs get your teams together for the “Race to the Rocker”, March 22, 2014! This would be a great way for clubs to enhance the Health part of the 4-H’s and get involved in a great community event.

Don’t forget the 4-H clubs are working the spa-ghetti dinner the Friday night before, March 21 from 5-8 PM at the Cuba High School. This is a fundraiser for Crawford County 4-H so we need all to help. Club leaders will receive more infor-mation on the work schedule soon.

Attention all 4-H Hog Project Members:

There will be a swine project member meeting on Tuesday evening,

February 11, 6:00 PM at the Peoples Bank Annex in Cuba.

Attention 4-H Members:

The Crawford County Cattlemen have asked 4-H to help with the set-up and clean-up for their annual meeting, Sat-urday, February 22 at the Recklein Auditorium in Cuba.

Set-up will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday February 22 and clean-up will be Sun-day afternoon, February 23 at 1:00 PM. Please try to fit one of those times in your schedule to help out.

4-H Volunteer Orientation

Welcome to the new Crawford County 4-H Volunteers. All new volunteers must complete a one-time required 4-H Volunteer Orientation before working with 4-H youth. This can be done online at http://4h.missouri.edu/getinvolved/volunteer

4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals

Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 17, 2014 for 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The National League Champion Cardinals will be playing the Atlanta Braves in a 1:15 pm game. Tickets for the game will be $25.00 each which includes a 4-H Day t-shirt. The ticket order form is attached.

Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 7, 2014. Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope.

Clover Kid Reminder

4-H age is 8 years old by December 31st of the program year.

Clover Kid age is 5 years old by December 31st. Clover Kids

can not participate in market livestock projects, horsemanship

or shooting sports.

During Clover Kid meetings, 5 to 7 year olds may do crafts, age-

appropriate cooking projects, small animal projects, etc. Clover

Kid projects may be displayed at the Fair and 4-H Achievement

Day with the projects receiving participation ribbons.

4-H Camp Counselors

If you are 14 years old or older, enjoy outdoor activities and kids, consider being a camp counselor this summer. There is an application process, with training on the evenings of March 10, 31 and April 28, and May 30-31. 4-H Camp is June 2-5 at Camp Clover Point Lake of the Ozarks State Park.

State 4-H Horse Judging Clinic/Contest

Trowbridge Livestock Center - UMC

Open to all 4-H members. There is no limit on

the number of members a county may pre-

enter in the contest; however, youth must pre-

enter. Lunch is provided for youth participants.

15. Cost is $15.00 per participant.

Shooting Sports Leadership Certification Workshop

March 28-30, 2014

The spring shooting sports volunteer workshop will be at Camp JoOta, near Clarence, MO. Cost is $65 and includes Friday and Saturday night lodging at the camp plus 5 meals—Saturday and Sunday. Pre-registration is due to March 15, however the workshop is first-come, first serve.

Valentine Snack Pots

Supplies:

terra cotta clay pots paint brushes

acrylic paints plastic pot liner

valentine stickers ribbon

spray sealer newspaper

pencils (with new erasers)

What to do:

Lay the newspaper on a workspace. First, show the children all the supplies and tell them to think about what

they want their finished pot to look like. Paint the inside and the outside of the pot and let it dry. It may

need more than one coat to cover it. Decorate the pot. Try different ways: polka dots can be made by dip-

ping the pencil eraser in paint and dabbing it on the pot. Stickers are easy to use. Conversation hearts can

be glued on. Use a sponge to add another color on top of the old one (get the sponge wet, wring out the wa-

ter, and dab it into the paint. Wipe off the extra paint on the newspaper. Dap it lightly onto the first color.)

When it’s all done, spray with acrylic sealer and let it dry. Put the liner in and fill with a nutritious snack (or

conversation hearts!).

your club leader or your local MU Extension center.

Read the literature carefully, know requirements and pre-

requisites, and let members of your group set individual

and group goals.

Study the leader/helper guide and adapt it to your situa-

tion.

List skills the members should know in order to complete

work.

Decide what skills to include in each project group.

Decide what you and members are to do at each meet-

ing.

Prepare needed materials before the meeting.

Keep attendance and project records.
