MU Extension is a unique funding partnership.Extension funding is a three-way partnership of federal, state and county government. Federal and state money, through the University of Missouri system, pay professional staff salaries, training costs, computers and communication equipment. County funds support the local office, secretarial and youth assistant salaries, staff mileage and council expenses.

The New Madrid County Extension Council, faculty, and staff would like to express our appreciation to the New Madrid County Commissioners for their continued support of extension programs.

Local SupportDid you know you can donate directly to New Madrid County Extension with a gift to be used immediately or as an endowment contribution for long term efforts. Monies put into the endowment are left forever to earn interest with the county office benefiting each year. You can also direct your donation to a specific program such as 4-H or Master Gardeners. To donate go to https://extension.missouri.edu/counties/new-madrid/donate.

Economic Opportunity

Community Economic Development work in New Madrid County

The Bootheel Synergy Project was completed in 2020. We worked on broadband and workforce development by partnering with SEMO Rural Electric Cooperative and Three Rivers College.

Outcomes were: starting work on an educational campaign for communities to learn the benefits of being 1 gig city and a survey showing the needs of the employers.

We continue to support these efforts when requested by the Bootheel Regional Planning Commission or our partners of SEMO Rural Electric Cooperative and Three Rivers College.

A grant search was done for the New Madrid Historical Museum which resulted in the board uncovering new financial resources.

Multiple CED Projects Come to County

Risco GED meeting.

The New Madrid Extension Facebook page provides many opportunities for Economic Development webinars.

A financial relationship was developed between the New Madrid County of Mayors Association and MU Extension. We received funding for five projects at $2500 each. Only Risco and Morehouse are active. Risco is working on locating a small grocery store. Morehouse is trying to prepare for a truck stop when the I57 comes through. We had opportunities with the cities of New Madrid and Portageville and Matthews but could not move forward with them.

Corteva/Pheasants Forever/Missouri 4-H

It was a great day for 4-H, MDC, and Corteva as the children and adults covered the pollinator site with seeds from all types of beneficial plants.“I can’t wait to see the flowers we planted today,” said one excited child at the Corteva pollinator site.

Grab your bucket of seeds and help the bees, butterflies and other insects as they pollinate our world. An excited group of children and adults participated in the planting of the Corteva pollinator site near New Madrid.

At the Corteva/4-H pollinator site planting members, adults and MO Dept. of Conservation personnel learned about bees and the fantastic job they do as pollinators---and what we can do to help!
