until recently, legislation has meant only a hybrid main

Engine torsional vibration has increased dramatically in recent years. Greater cylinder pressure

and increased compression ratios have meant a cure for the extra vibration had to be found. To solve this LuK worked closely with

Vehicle Manufacturers during their design stages resulting in the ultimate solution, the Dual Mass Flywheel. This product absorbs all the extra torsional vibration

and gives the added benefits of reducing noise, reducing fuel consumption and protecting the driveline from the harmful vibration.

Any LuK DMF fitted as Original Equipment will have been developed specifically for that particular vehicle. As a result, the performance characteristics of the flywheel will be matched to that vehicle’s needs.

Accurate diagnosis of cause of failure is vital to ensure the replacement flywheel has a long service life. Misfires and poor running of the engine will cause premature failure of a DMF. Poor driving technique can

also shorten the life.

In recent years various Aftermarket Suppliers have plugged gaps in their range by marketing cheaper, non damped solid replacements for vehicles that were originally designed and fitted with a Dual Mass Flywheel. While this may sound like good financial sense, it must be remembered that in its twilight years the vehicle is likely to be subject to even more vibration, increasing the possibility of reliability problems with parts such as the gearbox.

A solid flywheel conversion could shorten the life of other drivetrain components. Vibrations not eliminated by the flywheel have been known to destroy gearbox components, contribute to broken crankshafts and increase noise or resonance within the vehicle cabin to unacceptable levels. Catastrophic failures can also occur as a result of retro-fitting solid flywheels.

The next time you are faced with choosing between a DMF and a cheaper non-original solid replacement, give your local branch a ring. We will make sure you’ll not only be getting the correct part, but your customer will leave your garage a happy customer.
