SUMMER ASSIGNMENT

Your goal this summer is to fill a sketchbook by working in it every day to achieve the goals on the previous slide.

You will do this by drawing/painting every day in your sketchbook.

We will work in 3 different ways: Memory, Observation, Imagination

The topics will up to you so that you can discover where you interests lie and what could be topics for your Sustained Investigation

1. ARTISTS WORK IN 3 WAYS

MemoryObservationImagination

Each day you set out to draw/paint you will choose one of these three ways to work with your subject.

You do not have to fill a page every day with a large drawing.

You can work on larger drawings over time.

A single page may have a series of images on it.

Annotate your sketchbook by adding text to your images –What sparked the memory?Where were did you observe? How did you imagine?

2. LEARN ON YOUR OWN

Look online and find a free art course. There are tons of artists offering tutorials on methods, techniques, materials etc…

For example, during the Covid-19 quarantine I took an oil pastel class from KylleWynn Studios, the Virtual Art Summit, Sketchbook Revival, Natural Dying with Indigo and other natural pigments, mandalas with Alisa Burke, Color Play with Este McLeod etc…some of these I paid for, but most were free. I worked only in my sketchbook. I took lots of notes and practiced the lessons with the instructor and on my own.

Work exclusively in your sketchbook once you find a course to try.

All of the courses I worked with were short and I could work at my own pace.

Use the supplies you have at home or purchase supplies.

3. PODCASTS

Eric Scott Studios

Eric Scott is an art educator and artists who has a series called The Artistic Accomplice.

This is a great series to listen to and take GOOD notes.

Go to his website: https://ericscottart.com/

and click on Podcast at the top. He has about 32 podcasts and growing. I would like for you to listen to at least 10 over the summer.

Dedicate at least one page in your sketchbook to notes from listening to the podcast. Write down things that interest you, inspire you, things that make you want to know more – then go research more, one idea may lead to another idea or way of thinking, how does what he is presenting make you change how you think or view aspects of being an artist? These are the types of things that you may write about.

You may also draw/sketch ideas while you are listening.

Give your page a heading/title/episode number.

Ps. Eric Scott Studios has some great online workshops. We will be using his journal model in class starting in the fall. BUT he has very nicely priced workshops that you may want to follow. You can also find lots of his tutorials on his YouTube channel.

4. ADD YOUR OWN CONTENT

The more you use your sketchbook the better.

Use it as a daily diary….look up Lynda Barry’s Syllabus and see her recommendation for a quick daily log..short and sweet.

Add in your thoughts or ideas of content you may want to explore in your artworks in AP.

Add articles from magazines

Extra sketches that may not fit within the categories listed for you first 3 assignments.

The more you explore the more experience you are gaining.

YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DRAW IN AP STUDIO…THIS IS THE PLACE TO PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

5. GMAIL

You need to check your school gmail account weekly.

I may send you articles or things of interest for you to include in your sketchbook.

I will look for the information I send you inside your sketchbook as a completed assignment or just to have the information.

You may also communicate with me via my school email. Just look for Brooke Richards. You may find interesting things you want to share with me that should go into my sketchbook .

So check your school gmail regularly. Get used to doing so as we may use it throughout next school year to communicate with each other regarding your work.

GRADING 100 POINTS

On the first day of school you will turn in your sketchbook.

It will be graded on the quality of the work inside, consistency of use, and how personal the content is for you as an artist.

Pages should be as full as possible.

Torn out pages will cause points to be deducted, overly empty pages will loose points etc…

Quality of work…even if messy. Messy is fine as long as content is being properly and thoroughly explored.

Variety and mixture of media – go past just pencil drawings or pen drawings. Please do not use charcoal in your sketchbook or chalk pastels unless you can contain the mess.

WHERE TO GO FOR EXAMPLES

1. Pinterest

2. Instagram – look for artists who work in visual journals/sketchbooks

3. Bybun – Roxanne Coble – AWESOME sketchbooks

4. Look for GCSE sketchbook examples (this is a model we may follow at the next school year starts.

EXAMPLES: BYBUN

https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=x31mbVkAzI4

This link will take you to a brief sketchbook flip.

She is known for her visual journals and her sketchbooks. If you watch her longer flips she explains how she uses her sketchbook.

I believe there are also video and blogs about her visual journals.

GCSE – INTERNATIONAL ART PROGRAM DONE MOSTLY IN EUROPE.

These are great to see because they help us to begin thinking about how to work in a sketchbook for AP studio art.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPLzNxLqL_I

The link above takes you to a GCSE sketchbook flip.

Note the quality of the work and the originality…she had a photoshoot to get images to work from for her larger finished pieces.

Over all a good reference. Your AP sketchbook will work in a similar fashion and will be a HUGE part of your AP portfolio in the spring 2021.
