The Story ofCharlie the Chimpanzee

It was a bright and sunny morning when Charlie was bornin the Cameroon rainforest.

Charlie loved to play in the trees with his best friend, Cora.They were inseparable!

From swinging in the vines and picking out thebugs, Charlie and Cora were always together.

Cora and Charlie were always warned by their mothersto stay away from the open parts of the rainforest,

because there were many dangers there.

One day, Charlie and Cora decided to break the rules and wentexploring. They wanted to try to save the trees that had been

chopped down. However, they didn't make it very far.

Cora was suddenly caught in a cage with no way to escape.Charlie heard human voices headed their way, so he tried

to help her out.

Biting and tearing at the cage, Charlie finally freed Cora.However, he was too late. The humans had reached them!

Charlie told Cora to run, and he stayed back to distractthem from getting to her. He tried to run the other way,

but he was soon captured by the men.

Charlie was scared and wanted to be freed, but he hadno way of escaping on his own. Crammed in a small

cage, he found himself missing Cora more than ever.

He was soon passing the fallen trees and saw lots of menwith really big machines everywhere.

Charlie tried to scream for help , but no one paid him anyattention. Couldn't they tell he was being kidnapped?

Charlie kept wondering, "Why won't they help me?"

Many days past and Charlie remained in the small cage, onlygiven small amounts of food and water. He was eventually

brought to a market with many different types of animals allkept in small cages.

Many different people came up to Charlie's cage, each onescarier than the rest. That is, until one young man walked intothe market. Everyone started to scramble, grabbing anything

they could and running out the back door.

Charlie was confused, this man looked so nice! Why waseveryone so afraid of him? The man walked over to some of

the cages that were left behind and hauled them out thedoor.

Charlie's cage was soon taken and he was put into the back of atruck. Maybe he was finally begin rescued!

Charlie and some of the other animals, including birds andeven other chimpanzees were taken to a shelter. His bruises

were tended to and he was given lots of fruits andvegetables.

Charlie became a very large and strong chimpanzee, andhe loved the people at the shelter that helped him. They

would always take care of him when he needed it andthey taught him how to survive on his own.

Charlie was returned to the forest, where he set out tofind his mother and Cora. He hoped that they still

remembered who he was!

Charlie searched for many days, and on his eleventh dayback in the rain forest, he was finally reunited with his

mother and Cora. They were so excited to see him! Theythought that he would be gone forever. Charlie explained

that there are good humans, because they helped andrescued him. Charlie will forever be thankful for the

people who helped him. They saved his life and now hecan live happily ever after with Cora.
