Topics for Panel Discussions
Singapore’s position as PE Hub
Outline:
Private equity and venture capital (“PEVC”) firms play an important role in
Singapore’s financial services sector. The PEVC sector in Singapore currently has over
US$20 billion worth of assets under management, and is well-positioned to ride the
growth of increased PEVC activity in the surrounding Southeast Asia region.
While Singapore is becoming a top choice for PEVC firms with an interests in South
East Asia, it faces many challenges such as the continued dominance of Hong Kong
as a preferred choice for PEVC in Asia and the ambition of regional competitors such
as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta as alternative PEVC hubs.
Under this backdrop, what are the advantages Singapore has that will sustain its
attractiveness as a PEVC hub?
Riding the Wave of a Rising Middle Class in ASEAN
Outline:
The ASEAN countries – Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia,
Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao PDR and Brunei – have a collective population of
more than 600 million people, nearly twice that of the U.S. and roughly half of that of
China. The ASEAN ten’s collective annual GDP exceeds $2 trillion and accounts for
slightly more than 4% of global GDP. In 2011, total ASEAN GDP grew 4.7%.
The rise of the middle class in these economies is fuelling consumption and is expected
to turbocharge ASEAN’s contribution to the global GDP in the near future. What are
the some of the hottest and some of the most under-invested sectors that will benefit
from this growth? How can Private Equity firms ride on the wave of a rising middle
class in ASEAN?
Asian Snapshot: LP-GP Dynamics
Outline:
The trend of LPs taking on direct private equity investments led many to speculate
that the GPs would increasingly be sidelined. This includes the rise of direct sovereign
wealth fund investments and family offices conducting their own private equity deals.
The economic potential of Asia led to the growth of many local GPs with excellent
track record. At the same time, rising wealth of Asia led to the growth and
development of powerful Asian LPs that are making huge investments around the
world.
With the trend of more direct LP investments, how would the LP-GP dynamic evolve?
And what can the GPs do to remain relevant to the LPs?
Evolving role of service providers to PE firms:
Outline:
Increasingly many PE firms are looking at developing their internal capabilities to
replace traditional services that management consultants and lawyers provide.
Service providers to PE firms must evolve in the way they value-add to the Private
Equity firms or may face the situation where they are eventually sidelined.
How are the service providers adapting to the trend of PE firms adopting their own
internal capabilities and how can these service providers reposition themselves to stay
relevant and play integral roles in the PE industry?
