Definition of Surface Water Classification
The following definitions of river quality are taken from the Environment Agency website:
River Quality: The General Quality Assessment scheme (GQA) is the Agency’s national method for classifying water quality in rivers and canals. The scheme provides a way of comparing river quality from one river to another and for looking at changes through time. The water quality is assessed from four perspectives: chemistry, biology, nutrients, and aesthetics.
Chemistry and Biology: Samples are analysed for three determinants of organic pollution: ammonia, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and dissolved oxygen. The results for a site are averaged and percentiles are calculated. These are compared with limits set for each of six grades as shown in Table C.6. A grade is assigned to the length of river (which the sampling site represents) according to the lowest grade achieved by any of the three determinands. For example, if a site is grade A for dissolved oxygen and ammonia but only grade B for BOD, then the grade assigned is B.
Classification of biology is based on the macro-invertebrates found in the kick-samples. The range of species found is compared with the range that would be expected in the river if it was not polluted or physically damaged. This takes account of natural differences expected due to different types of geology and flow, for example. One of six grades is allocated to each river length, as shown in Table C.6.

Nutrients and Aesthetics: There are no formal ‘good’ or ‘bad’ concentrations for nutrients in rivers in the way chemical and biological quality are described. Rivers in different parts of the country have naturally different concentrations of nutrients. ‘Very low’ nutrient concentrations, for example, are not necessarily good or bad; the classifications merely state that concentrations in this river are very low relative to other rivers. The classifications of nutrients are shown in Table C.7.
The aesthetic quality is assessed by surveying sites for features, which spoil the look and smell of rivers: the amount and type of litter, oil, scum, foam, sewage fungus, colour and odour. Both the water surface and the banks where there is public access are considered. The classification method is based on each factor being considered separately to assign a class and then these separate classes are combined to give an overall grade. The overall grade for a site is then based on combining these classifications, which are weighted according to their perceived importance. The classification of aesthetics is shown in Table C.7.

River Quality Targets: River Quality Objectives (RQOs) are used in England and Wales as targets for water quality in 40,000 km of rivers. RQOs are mainly used to set conditions in all the licenses granted to industry and commerce for discharges of water into rivers. But they are also used in various of decisions designed to protect rivers from the impacts of the use of land for agriculture, leisure and housing. Each river stretch is given a water quality sampling point. This point is outside any mixing zones of discharges or tributaries, and should be representative of the quality of the whole stretch. The system comprises five classes in order of decreasing quality, from RE1 (the highest quality) to RE5 (the lowest quality). Table C.8 sets out the water quality criteria that each class must satisfy.

Notes on Indicative Geological Long Sections
Indicative geological long sections, Figures C8 – C11, have been prepared for the majority of the Crossrail Line 1 route to illustrate the main relationship between the railway, the deep aquifer and the overlying aquicludes. These sections are based on inspection of BGS maps, selected water well data, site investigation records and LBGM model layer data. The LBGM model layers are only available within the domain of the model and their use has been limited to the surface railways since more detailed site investigation data are usually available for the tunnels. Stratigraphy is used as a basis for geological sections other than where LBGM layers are shown. This is due to the LBGM layers having been derived by interpolating stratigraphic data from a large dataset on to a 1 km grid and then setting up the model using layers with similar hydrogeological properties. The model layering does not contain surfaces for the superficial deposits but maps the top of the uppermost layer of solid geology present as ground level. The London Clay (Layer 5) has its base mapped at the same elevation as the stratigraphic layer. However, Layer 4 represents the upper layers of the Woolwich and Reading Beds (from the Lambeth Group). The Harwich Formation is ignored. The sandier facies at the base of the Lambeth Group, the Upnor Formation and the Thanet Sands are grouped as Layer 3, the ‘Basal Sands’. The base of the Thanet Sands and top of the Chalk follows the stratigraphic boundary. The Chalk is subdivided into a high permeability, upper layer (Layer 2) with a low permeability, thicker, lower layer underneath (Layer 1). For clarity Layer 1 is not shown on the sections.
The main objective of the sections is to demonstrate the vertical relationship between Crossrail Line 1 works, the deep aquifer and the overlying aquiclude layers. The sections have been prepared as follows:

Figure C10 – Stepney Green to Victoria Dock Portal: This is based on site investigation data.
Figure C11 – North East Route Section: This is based on model layer data.
The geological long section for the North East route section has not been extended from Harold Wood to Shenfield since the London Clay is present everywhere. No geological section has been prepared for the remainder of the South East Route Section. Instead a geological section through the Thames tunnel and a figure showing the solid geology around the Plumstead portal are presented within the main text.
It is emphasised that all these sections have been prepared to illustrate the background to the water resources baseline and assessment and they should not be used for any other purpose. In particular, the data should not be scaled off for any design purposes.
