Notes: Navy Fuel Pier

Station description: Standalone Meteorological w\Visibility, and Co-located shore ATON

station

The site is located on United States Navy Fuel Pier property. The first suggested site was the

south end of the fuel pier this site proved to be insufficient for sitting the visibility sensor. We

also visited the north end of the same pier. This location could site the visibility sensor however

it would require the fabrication of a mounting platform to be mounted in a corner of the north

pier bollard. (figure 1)

A shore side location was identified with in the security fence on the property at the end of the

paved road. That is north of the pier, near a 30’ tall concrete light pole that supports a security

camera system that we might be able to access AC power, also there is a galvanic protection

system for the pier located nearby that we could also allow easy access to AC power. Two

potential sites are in this area one nearer the water’s edge, the second is centered on the fence

between the water and tree line.

One issue with the near shore station is a ~ 20 foot tall spill boom spool with be installed along the fence

line at a future date. Figure 5

Meteorological Review: The locations identified for the installation of the Visibility station on shore is

appropriate for Visibility sensor sitting. The proposed spill boom and other issues in the area could be

issues with winds coming from the west / northwest, and from the south for the spill boom. This would

need to be noted, if they choose to proceed with the installation of a full met station these issues could

negativity impact the performance of the wind sensors.
