10th anniversary

The Shelby County Applefestwas first observed in the year2003 as a celebration of Ohio’s Bi-centennial.

Success was immediate in thatinitial year and this annual eventhas continued to expand in bothpopularity and attendance. The2012 Applefest will mark the 10-year anniversary and is scheduledfor Friday through Sunday

The original concept for Apple-fest was to set aside a weekend ofactivities during which ShelbyCounty residents and neighborscould come together to celebratelife and to enjoy quality time withfamily and friends. It is a time toavow and recognize that the peo-ple of Shelby County are truly as“American as apple pie.”

Applefest offers something forall age groups and has evolvedinto one of West Central Ohio’spremier family fun events. All ac-

tivities and entertainment will beoffered free of charge and theevent in its entirety will be cen-tered in historic downtown Sidney, with the Shelby County courtsquare serving as its focal point.

Children’s activities and a vari-ety of nonstop live entertainmentwill be presented on two full-sizestages. Attractions and exhibitswill be both entertaining and edu-cational. To help ensure true fam-ily-friendly nature of Applefest, noalcoholic beverages will be per-mitted.

The underlying success of Ap-plefest rests in the generous spiritof its local sponsors and dedicatedvolunteers. Thanks to the finan-cial support of both businessesand individuals coupled with in-kind sponsorships, this festivalhas achieved tremendous successin a very short period of time, or-ganizers said.

Applefest is organized by an all-volunteer board of directors. In2012, Amy Pike has served as thechairwoman.

“Every detail of Applefest con-tinues to be meticulously man-aged so that, come the weekendafter Labor Day each September,

thousands can enjoy a true tasteof Americana under the shadetrees of the Shelby County court-house,” said Pike

The 2012 festival will featurelive entertainment from the BigBand era to the music of today onthe main stage. All who attendthis year’s Applefest are sure toenjoy the craft, quilt, floral, car,and Shelby County woodcarversshows, along with an abundantvariety of vendors offering every-thing from home-grown and home-made items to apple-themed foodand soft drinks. The Grown inShelby County contest, kiddietractor pull, Applefest photo con-test, and 10K, 5K, and kids 1-milefun run are a part of this year’sApplefest.

On Saturday and Sunday, thekids activities area will be in fullswing, offering arts and crafts ac-tivities for children along with anentertaining lineup of live per-formances on the Kid’s Stage. TheShelby County Historical Societywill host a Native American gath-ering featuring presentations byDr. Herman Viola, a well-recog-nized expert on Native Americanculture, an encampment and Na-

tive American exhibits at the RossCenter. The return of the annualApplefest parade and combinedhigh school band performancehave been planned for Sunday.

Native American dancers to join GatheringDozens of Native

American dancers frommany different tribes willperform during theShelby County HistoricalSociety’sNativeAmericanGathering at the ShelbyCounty FairgroundsThursday through Sun-dayHead dancers Tim

Samaniego and AngelaAllen, of Lima, will leadtraditional dances, grassdances and fancy dancesduring the event, which isopen to the public. Theyhope that attendees whocome to watch will bedrawn into the action anddecide to participate.“People are always in-

vited to join in,”Samaniego said.Amaster of ceremonies

will explain each dance. The performances arescheduled to run continu-ously from early after-noon Thursday until 4p.m. and then again from6 p.m. until dark. Theevent is free.“This is a great time for

people to come out andlearn that Native Ameri-can people are still here,”Samaniego said.“Weworkamong you.”He is a unionpipe-fitter, working inLima.Allen is a paralegalwho works in Belle-fontaine.They make their own

regalia, the clothes wornduring a pow-wow. Theclothes feature beadworkand moccasins that areparticular to individualtribes. If a Native Ameri-canwears a traditional re-galia, “you can tell whichtribe and which clan” he’sfrom, Samaniego said.Allen, who is Shawnee,

grew up inVinton Countyand began dancing as atoddler.

“When you’re (at apow-wow) as a child, run-ning around with yourfriends, you just do in anddance,” she said. “I justlearned by going in thering and dancing. Mymom always encouragedit. My mom was veryproud of it. ”The couple have been

dancing for 40 years.Samaniego, a MescaleroApache originally fromWabash, and Allen, ashead dancers during thegathering in Sidney, willbe responsible for startingeach dance and leadingthe other dancers into thering.Allenwill instruct fe-male dancers and

Samaniego, the males.“If dancers have ques-

tions, they come to thehead dancers,”Allen said.Tilda Phlipot, director

of the Shelby County His-torical Society, noted thatthe gathering will be aunique opportunity forarea residents to see vari-ous kinds ofNativeAmer-ican dance.“Because participants

will come from all overand represent differenttribes, the styles of danc-ing will be many,” shesaid.According to

Samaniego, what peoplewill see is the only danc-ing indigenous to the

North American conti-nent.“This is true America,”

he said. “Each person hashis own version of thedance. That’s your dance.”The styles of dancing

fall into three categories:traditional, grass andfancy.“Traditional is the

story dance,” Samaniegoadded. The dancers tell astory — of war, of thehunt, of conquest — “orwhatever you want tosay.”The garb of the tradi-tional dancers is made ofbroadcloth or leather orwool.“If you looked at a pic-

ture of a traditionaldancer from100 years agoand put it next to a dancerof today, they would lookthe same,” he said.Fancy dancing was

adopted by NativeAmeri-cans after it became pop-ular in the Wild Westshows that toured thecountry in the early 20thcentury. The regalia offancy dancers featuresbright colors, satins andsilks.‘We weren’t flashy

enough” for the stagedperformances, Samaniegosaid. According toWikipedia, members ofthe Ponca tribe developedthe dance in the 1920sand 1930s to entertaintourists on the reserva-tions. It showcases thegreat strength andprowess of its performers.“In a traditional pow-

wow, you send grassdancers in first to laydown the grass so otherpeople can get in,” henoted. “A pow-wow is likea big church social.”Because some of the

dancers carry pieces thatare antique, family heir-

looms, the head dancerscaution attendees not totouch any part of a per-former’s regalia withoutasking first. Likewise,Allen said, don’t take anyphotoswithoutpermission. The gathering will

openThursdaywith a lec-ture by Dr.HermanViola,of Falls Church,Va., cura-tor emeritus at the Smith-sonian’s NationalMuseum of Natural His-tory. The speech will be at7 p.m. at LehmanCatholic High School.Viola has authored sev-eral books about his spe-cialty, the study of theAmerican West and Na-tive Americans. All events comprising

the gathering will be freeand open to the public ex-

cept the programs thathave been scheduled forthe schools on Friday.A Ross Historical Cen-

ter exhibit will featureNativeAmerican artifactson display from Saturdaythrough the end of themonth.Craftsmen, story-

tellers, dancers anddrummers will illustrateNative American life atthe fairgrounds beginningat 10 a.m. Saturday. At 1p.m., a ceremony honor-ing all veterans will takeplace. In addition to crafts for

The Applefest

Quilters ready to display artworkBY MARY ELLEN EGBERT

Summer is quickly passing, whichmeans time for the Shelby County Ap-plefest is almost here. And although a majority of folks do

whatever they can to keep cool, thereis a unique group of thread artistswho have feverishly been working onsomething to keep them warm. Whatbetter place to view their talents thanat the Applefest Quilt Show? The quilt show committee has

taken a walk through time to remem-ber the wonderful pieces that havebeen hung each year to display thecraftsmanship, colors and history ofthis art form. From the first year atthe Masonic Temple, several years atthe fairgrounds and more perma-nently in the Senior Citizen Center, quilters have come to compete as well

as admire the threaded beauties. This year will be no exception. The

center will become a gallery and hun-dreds of people will come to be in-spired. But there will be a fewchanges that are regrettably neces-sary in order to continue what theoriginal intent for this show was andstill is, to educate and pay tribute tothe quilters from yesterday as well astoday. The economy has hit everyone in

one way or another, and so it is withthe budget for the quilt show. Thefirst-, second- and third-place winnersfrom each category will not beawarded monetary prizes for the firsttime since the show began. But thecommittee is confident that the showwill retain the quality and quantity ofquilts for all to see. There has been an award every

year that has not been given enoughrecognition for the passion that hasgone into the making. Every categorywhich has a first-, second- and third-place winner has been awarded ahandmade log cabin apple, whichPauline Warren, a national award-winning quilter from Sidney, has lov-ingly made each year. These ribbonsare unique to the Applefest and weredesigned byWarren just for this event. The first-, second- and third-place

winner of each category will still beawarded these apples. And when allcategories have been judged, the Bestof Show Hand-Quilted and the Best ofShowMachine-Quilted quilts will stillreceive prize money in addition totheir ribbons. Each year there is a theme cate-

gory, and this year’s theme is “SimplyCharming.” What this means is, each

piece of fabric must be cut and sewnback together to make the quilt topwith only one template. Some of thesedesigns include squares, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, apple cores pat-tern and any other shape that will in-terlock with one another to finish outas a quilt. In early days, this method, called a

charm quilt, required that each pieceof fabric in the quilt be different. Butin the Applefest show, fabrics can berepeated. They just all have to be cutfrom the same template. The Loose Threads Quilt Club has

once again created a beautiful rafflequilt that will be awarded to the luckywinner on Sunday as soon as the showis over. This year’s pattern is a patri-otic Ohio Star. Tickets will be avail-able at the show or from clubmembers prior to the show.
