EagleBurgmann KE is more than an expansion joint manufacturer - we are a full service provider for your gas turbine exhaust. Over 50 years in the industry and hands-on experience with onsite expansion joint solutions and the environment within they are installed, has enabled us to provide a full service GT exhaust solu-tion package for 501 F/G users.

Demands for improved efficiency in systems along with increasing number of cycles, create an extreme stress on the gas turbine exhaust.

EagleBurgmann KE offer a full service solution package specifically developed for 501F gas turbine users.

Weather Shield/Fire protection (2)The OEM supplied Enclosure Exhaust Seal is not air tight and may degrade over time. This leaves the fire protection system potentially ineffective.

A Weather Shield solution allows for a secure air tight fit between the turbine housing and exhaust. The design allows for a secure fit to each compo-nent while allowing relative moti on so the Exhaust Cylinder can expand.

The seal performs better than the OEM design. If there were a fire protection event, this Weather Shield would easily provide the barrier to air allowing the fire suppressant systems to operate properly.

Strut modification (4)Cracking in the gas turbine casing and/or struts is a common issue, caused by unequal thermal growth rates. The strut construction is modified by adding a sliding solution, incorporating a pin in the strut, enabling the strut construction to accommodate the movement of the outer casing. Furthermore the strut connection can be reinforced for greater support.

General crack repair(5)High temperature and velocity of the exhaust gas causes severe stress and cracking through the manifold. EagleBurgmann KE has great experi-ence in repairing these cracks.

Combine-X (7)EagleBurgmann KE has developed an expansion joint design specifically for the Siemens 501F/G gas turbine. The expansion joint features an improved design and material selection for higher resistance to flow, temperature and vibration, extending the life of the joint. Firing temperature can be raised to 1,300 °F with no deterioration in the expansion joint performance. The warranty of parts and labor is three years.

With peaker plants more prevalent today, gas tur-bine units experience more thermal cycles per year with higher operating temperatures. End users are demanding improved warranties with longer inter-vals between maintenance outages. One way to improve operational reliability and increased service life is to invest in expansion joints that are designed especially for extreme conditions, extending the life of your gas turbine exhaust unit.

EagleBurgmann KE fabric expansion joints for 501F & 501G gas turbinesare specially designed by EagleBurgmann KE R&D to accommodate extreme temperatures and load from increasing number of cycles, resulting in reli-able and longer service life of the expansion joint and gas turbine unit. Features of the design are:

Rugged construction that is mechanically more sound than previous designs; protective wire mesh in the inner and outer layers

The insulation is compartmentalized in glass fabric. Insulation and glass fabric are quilted to prevent any shifting of the insulation material during cycling

Outer bolster flange only consists of glass fabric to improve clamping performance and minimize leakage

Improved design and material selection for high-er resistance to flow, temperature and vibration

Firing temperatures can be raised to 1,300 °F with no deterioration in expansion joint perfor-mance

Better component materials extend the life of the expansion joint.

EagleBurgmann KE has expanded our full warranty for this new design to three years on our parts and labor. Expected interval between maintenance cy-cles is significantly increased with this design.

Contact your local product specialist today to dis-cuss a FREE inspection of your existing expansion joints by one of our factory trained, highly qualified field engineers to assist you with selecting the opti-mal solution for your system.

501F/G Combine-X turbine exhaust expansion joint is designed by EagleBurgmann KE’s R&D specifically for Siemens 501F/G gas turbine exhausts. The expan-sion joint features several improvements, contributing to a more reliable solution and longer service life.

Outer layer (1): Rugged HF3 construction, mechanically more

sound than previous design Protective wire mesh in inner and outer layers

Outer bolster (2): Compartmentalized insulation QUILTED insulation and glass fabric to prevent

any shifting of insulation during cycling Improved clamping performance and minimized

leakageInsulation bolster (3): Encased and quilted glass fabric to prevent in-

sulation shifting Increased density of the insulation, improving

vibration dampening capability as well as noise attenuation

Two gas side bolsters (4+6): Pinned in place for precise positioning and an-

choring to eliminate shifting in insulation. Alignment of the pinned bolsters against the

metal frame to ensure that insulation returns to the original shape after compression

Wire mesh – two layers (5): The wire mesh prevents damage to the insula-

tion, by containing it from extending into the gap between the sleeve and the frame

Protect the fabric and insulation from flutter Though quite rugged, the mesh retain maximum

flexibility during thermal expansion and contrac-tion

The outer shell of the gas turbine exhaust expands at a greater rate than the support rings, causing cracks in the outer diffuser.

Exhaust flange

Support ring

Tear drop cuts are added evenly around the circumference of the support ring to allow thermal growth.

Improper tear drop gaps are causing cracks in the exhaust flange.

Flow liner

Flat bar

Flat bars are welded on both sides and the flow liner is seal welded to stop gas from leaking.

Stainless steel flat bars are installed on the flange for reduction of thermal gradient.

Siemens 501F gas turbine exhaust cylinder: Bearing house (1), Inner diffuser (2), Strut shield (3), Outer diffuser (4), Outer casing (5).

Several 501F users experience cracking in the gas turbine casing or struts, causing inefficient systems or in worst case unplanned shutdowns.

The cracking occurs due to unequal thermal growth rates in the casing compared to support rings, flange, struts etc. EagleBurgmann KE provides solu-tions to several of these issues:

1) Ring reduction modificationThe outer shell of the gas turbine is made of 347 SS and is only 5/16” thick. Due to the high internal temperature of the exhaust gas and the fact that it takes longer time for the heat to be distributed to the support rings, the thin outer shell expands at a greater rate than the support rings. This restricts the casing and causes cracks.

Solution: The height of each support ring is reduced and ”tear drop” cuts are added in intervals around the outside of each ring to allow thermal growth, while providing support of the exhaust tunnel.

2) Exhaust flange repairsThe exhaust flange connection is another area that is under severe thermal stress and may also need to be inspected and repaired.

There is a risk that the turbine manifold outlet flange cracks at the weld to the manifold.

Solution: EagleBurgmann KE has great experience with realigning the flange and installing 3/8” x 2 stainless steel flat bars, which reduces the thermal gradient, preventing the flange from cracking.

The flat bars are welded on both sides and the flow liner is seal welded to completely stop the gas leakage.

3) Strut modification Strut shield cracking is a common challenge for 501F turbine operators. Rather than continuing to shut down turbines for repairs, a retrofit by EagleBurgmann KE is designed to greatly reduce cracking.

A turbine generates approximately 1,100 pounds per second sending 1,100 °F exhaust and blast through the gas turbine exhaust. The center bearing of the gas turbine is fastened to the outer casing with struts and the high velocity and temperature puts extreme stress on both the strut and casing.

As the gas turbine ramps up to operating tempera-ture, the outer diffuser ring expands by approximately 3/4”, putting stress on the strut shield as well as the outer diffuser ring. This is the primary factor that initiates cracking!

Solution: To accommodate for the huge thermal growth of the diffuser ring, the struts need to be modified. The solution incorporates both rework on the strut itself and on the connection between the strut and diffuser ring.

A pin is incorporated in the strut to keep the shields aligned and limits the maximum and minimum posi-tions in sliding to the range expected with thermal expansion. This enables the strut construction to accommodate the movement of the outer casing.

The strut connection to the outer casing is rein-forced to provide greater support. The strut modification is a long term solution to keep your gas turbine operating sufficient between outages.
